Jack Brooks Park - Gulf Meadows 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 30, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

My three pros:

-Decent course amenities: All holes have concrete tee boxes, there is a course map at the parking lot, most holes have a sign indicating the hole #, baskets were in good shape. The course has 2 distinct loops that require you pass through the parking lot between 9 to 10 allowing a potty stop and drink restock. There were practice baskets at #10 for some reason- maybe thats where many folks start.

- Good mix of shots as you play several short wooded holes during the first half, several super long wide open holes through middle stretch and a few wooded holes to close it out.

- There are two courses in this one park but the two never overlap or cause much confusion. The courses are entirely seperate and at opposites ends of this huge park. This is the much easier of the two courses.

Cons:

My three cons:

- A couple holes slightly overlap fairways (#5 & # 8, #7 & #8 i think) and seems like it would be a mess if playing during a busy time. This doesnt make a lot of sense considering how huge the park is that these holes would be squeezed together in this way but it wasnt much of a factor when playing as there werent many others out.

-The big bomber holes are wide open with very little obstacles or danger. The holes end up being kind of bland and not very challenging or exciting (compared to the cedar hills course)

- The holes had small wooden posts at MOST holes but this usually only indicated the hole # and a distance written in sharpie. You will need to refer to the map to know which basket to aim at or to get around in a few places.

Other Thoughts:

This was a fun, quick play. Not much chance to lose plastic here compared to Cedar Hills - but i managed to lose one in the rough somehow... The course was clean, flowed well and no holes were total stinkers. Just a regular ol course to get warmed up for big brother Cedar Hills. I felt angry taking 3's at this course, I felt lucky taking 3's at cedar hills. Worth a stop, and would be regular play for me if i lived near. Just know, the Cedar Hills Course knocks this one out of the water.

Solid Disc Golf Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good Baskets
Good Tee Pads
Ok Signage
A Few Interesting Holes

Cons:

Nothing that was outstanding with the course design.
Much of the course is WIDE open.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course that will be challenging for the casual player. It also has enough tricks up its sleeve to keep the advanced player entertained. So it's got a little something for everyone, but doesn't wow me.

I will definitely make the trip to play both Jack Brooks courses again.

Party Time Down in Hitchcock Tx. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Jack Brooks #1 is a well laid out, challenging, unique course about 30 miles south of Houston. It resides in a large park complex that houses not only two of the best disc golf courses in Houston but also some of the best mountain biking trails this side of Austin. Being that I reside in North Houston I am used to playing through pine trees. This course on the other hand is full of cypress, oak, and dogwoods, this may not sound like a big deal, but the difference in trees gives this course a very unique feel. It almost felt like playing some of the courses up in Austin like Searight and Brushy Creek. The hole variety is excellent, with tight technical shots into small "cubbies" and long open bombers from 400 to 500 feet and I love the use of elevation on a course you would think was basically flat. The last three holes are as tight as they come and offer another challenge in an already varied course.

Cons:

The cages at this course are starting to show their age, although they are still serviceable. The natural teepads can be bothersome, but are nowhere near as bad as those at Agnes Moffit. The bugs out here can get big real BIG and the spiders can be even bigger, so be careful when reaching for those stray discs. The aforementioned trees provide beautiful scenery but also can eat or catch your discs in their dense branches. I have heard other reviewers talk about the mosquitoes and I can definitely see them being a problem out there, but luckily I didn't encounter any on my first trip out, but as always keep that can off Deep Woods Off handy.

Other Thoughts:

First off this is an excellent course, I can't stress that enough. It is extremely playable with challenges a plenty and will keep you interested the whole way through. It can be a drive to get there especially depending on where you're coming from. But don't let that dissuade you. Jack Brooks #1 is well worth the trip.

Pros:

Well rounded course on a nice piece of land. Friendly and active disc golf "community". Requires several differerent types of shots and the challenge varies hole to hole. Not the toughest course, but one of the funner courses you will play.

Cons:

Moquitoes can come out in force. A little bit down the road from Central Houston but drive is worth it if you have the time.
