Pros:
Not able to play during school hours , but okay on weekends and late afternoons/evenings . There is plenty of parking in the lots near hole #1 . This 9 holer runs counter clockwise over James Lane Allen's school grounds . The lawn and trees on the grounds are well maintained . There are nice numbered Discatcher baskets . There are no tee pads , so you have to play basket to basket . I was surprised by the length of some of the holes here . #'s 1 & 2 are short straightaway throws across parts of the driveways . Then # 3 is a much longer drive running parallel with the street . #4 follows suit , both with some trees forming a little challenge . #5 is a little behind you and to your left and uphill , but wide open . #6 is a long downhill drive down towards the street you were running parallel with on #3 & 4 but with a gully in front of the basket and a couple of trees alongside . #7 sits wide open with a downhill slope protecting the right side of the basket . #8 is really the only confusing hole on the course . You see a basket way up the hill towards the school . That basket is really #9 . The #8 basket is the only hidden one and is almost straight behind the #7 basket about 250'-260' and sits in kind of a basin . #9 is like blasting out of a sand trap , uphill , a pretty tough throw for elementary school kids . #9 finishes you r round directly behind the school , walk to the right and down the sidewalk and you will find your car . There is actually some elevation on this course . This is a great starter course to introduce the game of disc golf to the younger kids and even curious local residents . Disc Risk : It should be zero . No rough . It's hard not to spot a rollaway , and the kids throwing at the baskets are all going to be under 150' , anyway . This is what you call a fast relaxing round . I was done in under 30 minutes , even counting throwing at the wrong basket once and having to repeat .
Cons:
#1. Safety . I don't know if it's a good idea to throw across a driveway or sidewalk . Also , a couple of the holes are dangerously close to the road . I can see a couple of the kids smacking a SUV on a drive . Throwing basket to basket is okay if you are the only one on the course , but if you have a bunch of kids on separate baskets , someone could be beaned . #2 Very open /Challenge. There is not a lot to work with here , but whoever designed this did a pretty good job . Still , beyond newbies and families or a casual or 2 , this won't interest the more seasoned player . Depending on pro or con , wind can be a factor here , since most of the course is in the open . I am not a fan of playing basket to basket , since it almost constitutes Safari Golf . Maybe put an online map on DGR ?
Other Thoughts:
Don't let my score fool you . James Lane Allen Elementary did a fine job promoting disc golf to both their city and more importantly the kids . Some may actually grow to love it and be playing Shillito or Veterans Park after they play some rounds here . The course baskets are visible to 2 different streets , so they may attract the curious that live nearby . My Recommendation : Unless a bagger or a local that wants to practice putts or air out a few drives , this course may just need to be played by the residents , families , or the kids .
