Well worth the trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Challenging shots through the forest, great hospitality from Oscar the caretaker, who played a couple rounds with me. Thr course was freshly manicured and the fairways were clean. Great quality baskets. Noone else out on the course, apparently there is not much traffic coming through there. Well designed, challenging holes that utilize the space and flow well. I probably would have not heard of Jiquillilo if it weren't for this site, but glad I made it part of my trip. I ended up staying at a nearby hostel for a week and had an excellent time relaxing on the beach and meeting other travelers. Location is walkib distance to the beach and local restaurants/pulperias/hostels so it is very convenient. Anthony responded to my email right away and was very friendly and accommodating.

Cons:

Some thorny trees back in the forest, made the mistake of wearing sandals on my first round. The course is surrounded by barbed wire, so any discs going OB along the edges can be a bit tricky to retrieve. Other than some minor things, it is an excellent course

Other Thoughts:

The course Anthony created down here is an awesome addition to a Nica trip, it is too bad there isn't more interest so far, as it is a Hidden gem in this coastal village. Anthony and Oscar were both very kind and generous and it was a pleasure to check out the course and clubhouse, well worth a visit for any disc golfer traveling in Nicaragua!

Yes, this course is real, and it's really good 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 15, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Technical, challenging, and varied course
Beautiful setting
Well-designed with nice concrete tee pads for AM and PRO
Two elevated tee pads
A couple of open holes (#1 and #9) so you can get in a good crank

Cons:

Heat & skeeters
Punishing jail--not obscenely so, but I'd stay on the AM tees if I didn't have good control with my drivers.
Moss--some of the tee pads in the shade, most notably #18, are slippery with moss or mold
Horse poo--there are a few horses

Other Thoughts:

This course is the definition of a hidden gem. In terms of quality, it's really a top-notch course. The tee pads and baskets are very good. There are benches at every tee. However, there are no tee signs. The course caretaker, Oscar, will play with you so you know where to go.

Oscar is very chill, and he's got a wicked forehand flick. He helped build the course. He was shooting close to even par on this difficult course. His son has some skills as well. I really enjoyed playing with them. The course is free to play, but bring a few bucks to tip Oscar (tip box on the first tee-pad).

Overall the course is not enormous, but it is quite difficult. Most of the shots from the PRO tees are technical. Be prepared to hit a lot of trees. The AM tees will be fun for beginners and novices.

There are 19 holes, the last being a beautiful ace run from an elevated tee pad, basically a tree house. This 19th hole is a great bonus hole where most good players will be able to knock a stroke off their score with a fairly easy two.

Bring water, sunscreen, and perhaps bug spray. Luckily about 2/3 of the holes are shaded, so the heat isn't overpowering on most days. Also, I suggest bringing slightly more high-speed, glide-y discs than you might think necessary. None of the holes long, but due to the low elevation and high humidity, I found that my discs did not fly as far as usual.

The bar and showers were built but not operational at the time of my visit. The course in general is not getting much traffic despite being in great shape. The locals don't take any interest in it, and most of the travelers at the hostels/guesthouses/hotels don't even know it exists.

Thank you Oscar and Anthony for putting together this terrific disc golf course.

Discin' in Centro America 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Extremely well-manicured private course with caretakers on site. Great mix of native foliage and newly-planted citrus trees that will provide even more difficulty and routes as they grow. Cement tees and benches on all 19 holes, very easy to find the next hole. Design was set up to minimize walking in between holes and to save energy for more disc!

Cons:

It can be hot, temps in Nica are often around 90 degrees. Punishing jail, if you miss your route you will struggle to make par. Distance from my house in California!

Other Thoughts:

Such a great surprise to find a course in Nicaragua, a hidden gem. The course designer has been playing disc golf for 30+ years and definitely transferred some of the expertise into his course. A bar has been built and should be operable in the near future. You can hear the ocean throughout the round and there is plenty of shade. Great job Tony!
