City Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's a great place to bring the kids and you can play 18 holes in less than 40 minutes (easily). During the winter it began I designed 12 alternate holes that make for a great 18 hole track with some length and challenge.

Cons:

It's right next to city streets, there are other park users, and you really don't want to throw your disc in the yard of the rich, cranky 90 year old man.

My new "home course" 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I live on the isthmus, so I guess this is my new home course. I like that it's free to play and it was very empty when I was there, which is unlike what you'd expect at Elver or Hiestand.

The baskets catch very well and the tee signs are very adequate for conveying information about the hole. The tees are dirt and do just fine.

What I liked about this course was playing it over and over again trying to play a perfect game (of 12 strokes). The closest I got was 13 because #5 is tricky and the hardest hole on the course.

Hole #3 was definitely my favorite. It's a very short 123 foot hole, but the ace isn't easy. Coming from the left is not an option, but the easiest hyzer line is blocked too. It's aceable, but tricky.

I liked the design of the course for the most part. Every hole is quite different from the others. Even though the holes are short, they're fun to play several times.

Cons:

This course is not challenging. In fact, a lot of people would say it's really boring. There's really nothing to attract people here. I don't really know how to elaborate on this...

Other Thoughts:

All in all, it really is a great beginner's course. It's a course you can come to and work on your approaches and your putts. If you're reading this and you take a four on any of these holes, you should probably just pack up your things and go home before you lose any more of your dignity. ;)

Seriously though, it's really hard to say something substantial about this course. It's passable. Have fun!

Excellent beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a pretty and well-kept neighborhood park. The park is full of nice trees and bushes, and the grass is full and nicely mowed. The holes are all short, making it ideal for newer players and kids to learn the sport, complementing the tougher Madison area courses. Though there isn't much distance, nearly every hole requires avoiding trees, and there are a couple minor elevation changes to add some variety. The course requires left and right turning shots, so beginners will be pushed to learn how to make discs fly on different lines. There are decent tees and signs, and the baskets are brand new. The flow of the course is really easy to follow, so it won't frustrate first time players.

Cons:

The course is obviously designed for beginners, so it doesn't offer much challenge to players with more experience. Every hole is an ace run, and there isn't any punishment for running at the basket even if you miss your line. There are some safety issues here, especially if newer, less accurate players are throwing. Many holes play near one another. Walking paths and gazebos are in play on some holes as well.

Other Thoughts:

If I were rating beginner courses, this would be one of my favorites. It's short, but interesting, so good scores are attainable but not easy for newer players. For people with more developed skill sets, this is nothing but putter ace runs, so don't come here expecting any kind of challenge. We played as it was getting dark and there are enough street lights that you could probably play at night without glow discs here.

NEW DESIGN + NEW BASKETS = NEW COURSE 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Sure this is a short course, but in my opinion it is a great beginner course when all other Madison courses are more intended to the avid DG'er. Beginners would learn a lot here because there are obstacles on all but 1 hole on this course. They will learn what discs work for them, and what direction they go and how quick they turn left.

2) Nice DGA signs with a simple map of the holes using their stock stickers. Hole # and distance are also listed.

3) Nice new DGA baskets will most likely get used more frequently than the old wood ones with only a few chains. Bright orange tape on the poles for visibility.

4) Nice park here, it is well landscaped (trust me I am a landscaper). There are lots of perennials beds and shrubs set in the bed spaces, a gazebo in the middle of the park and lots of nice mature trees here. It would be a wonderful place to hangout and also get in a 15 minutes round of DG if you lived in the area. The turf in the park is in great shape and it stands up well to the use of the park.

5) Rolling hills (more the size of mounds than hills) create some interesting topography for this course. No . . . the elevation isn't dramatic but it is on par with the size of the park as well as the users of the DG course.

6) Almost every hole has something different to avoid ending with a fairly wide open hole. #1 is a simple hyzer slightly downhill but has a few trees to avoid, #2 shoots uphill and has a couple tree. #3 is an anyhyzer with a big turn on it and quite a few trees to avoid, #4 is an uphill hole with a large White Pine in the way to somewhat of an island green (really just a round area of turf surrounded by landscape beds, #5 is a straight away hole with a tree halfway down the fairway to avoid, and #6 ends in the open.

Cons:

1) Walkpaths and sidewalks will come into play about 4 times ont his course and that could be dangerous if it was crowded. My guess is there are way less disc golfers here than other park users, so keep that in mind if you play during a busy time. They may have no idea what you are doing there.

2) Short short short. I don't mind but most would consider it a negative.

3) Grass tees are always a negative in my opinion, but if you are any better than a real beginner you won't need a runup at all.

Other Thoughts:

This park was greatly improved for DG with the new baskets . . . I never got to play it with the old baskets but its nice to see the upgrade. It is a small park and should be reserved mostly for beginners. Be sure to be courteous with the other park patrons as I would bet it is packed with people normally in the summer. Worth a stop to check off another course or if you are a beginner, but it doesn't pose a large challenge to anyone really.
