Too Forgiving? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 16, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course at Kayak Pt resort is another well appointed, pretty layout. Being on an old ball golf course the fairways are already well established, there are cart paths and it is as nice a course as you can ask for as far as looks. Tee pads are well done turf with (mostly) great signs.
There is good use of elevation change, especially on #12 and 13 as fun downhills and 6 as a good link hole going uphill.
16 is a longer left onto the hill with 17 a short hole in the woods, good to see the woods being used, necessary to add some interest to this type of course.
Aptly called a resort, nice pro shop with restaurant coming.

Cons:

There are a few. Par info is off on a couple holes, score card is correct. Layout is a little odd, long walkouts between 4/5 and13/14. Signage is pretty good for these but there are a couple spots where you are close to the Gold course and next tee signs are in-obvious or non-existent.
Price. I will say it again, price. Having talked to the owners, they have the higher price because they say you can throw multiple rounds in a day. I don't think I CAN throw multiple rounds here in a day. 8k ft for their shortest course is already almost 2 rounds depending on the course. Worse, they don't trust us to be honest and sell one round tickets.
Finally, 10 par 4s. I get having an Am course here but if that is the case 8k ft is awfully long. This is one of my least favorite types of layout, long just to be long and some of the holes show it. Long, open and not particularly interesting.

Other Thoughts:

So, this is a cool, pretty place to play. Worth hitting if money isn't a concern. I liked it and will probably play again but not often at all. There are 2 more courses planned here, I really look forward to see what their blue course will be. Hopefully will make good use of the ample woods.
Group ahead of me were there early, took a break for lunch, and were going out for another round. The way to go here if you are up for it.
Rating. This is tough for me so some explanation is called for. Pretty, well appointed, about as nice as you will run into. That being said, I really was underwhelmed overall on length, par, and hole variety. I understand the 4s given, would be a 3 personally on my enjoyment but I know that is low. Personal take has to figure in, within reason, so going with 3.5. This was cemented by playing another new course in area on old ball course that I think did a better job overall.

A First Class Operation! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 16, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

If not now, then very soon, Kayak Point will be considered a premier disc destination. Granted, I played here on a perfect August, Washington Sunday morning with perfect blue skies and 80 degrees temperatures but there were about 35 cars in the parking lot. These are paying customers!

Kayak Point currently boasts two challenging 18s as well as a free 18 hole putter course. The price is $12 for all day and another $14 for cart. I'd say about half of the disc golfers had carts. An additional 18 holes of cart rental is $10. Playing both of these lengthy courses in the same day is impressive. Walking both of them on one day qualifies you for cowboy status.

The baskets are DGA Mach VIIs and they did catch three of my putts that might have slipped through on other baskets. The pads are level carpet which could be longer on some holes. The signs are nice heavy duty metal which show all the needed information.

According to Eric, one of the course's main men, things are progressing wonderfully. The pro shop is already impressive, a restaurant is in the works and there is big tournament next weekends. There are already enough players that tee times are recommended.

There's a lot to love about the red course. I really like the three wooded holes (4, 15 & 17) to contrast with the more open holes. The length here is consistent but not overwhelmingly so with four holes stretching past 600 feet. There are a couple of fun downhills tosses, # 3 is 618' and needs about a 250' carry to clear the swampy, marshy area. Don't laugh but 250' carries causes concern for some of us more mature players. Back to back holes 12 and 13 are both safe but quite enjoyable downhills. # 12 is 555' down a pretty, tiered fairway and then 13 is maybe the prettiest hole on the courses at 360 feet. # 15 is another cool downhill at 303' with the basket perched just on the edge of an old sand trap.

Cons:

As per usual, I do have a con or two. There are two long walkouts, from 4 to 5 and from 13 to 14.

Two tee pads and their holes are borderline boring, the # 7 tee pad is in a most vanilla tee pad and # 14 is mostly, a boring wide, open 360 footer.

It costs me $26 for 18 holes and a cart. It was great fun but the expense would certainly prevent me from playing here too often.

I might consider making the big tree on # 11 a Mando left. It was pretty easy to hyser around on the right.

Other Thoughts:

I'd hate to pick between here and the Canyon course at Horseshoe Lake in Port Orchard. Both require a cart (for me, at least). Both were great fun. As a total rec player, I could play either and not be overwhelmed by either distance or danger. I shot five over today and could possibly par this course. Then again, I could probably shoot ten over, too.

I hope they always have 35 cars in the lot here. Washington state has been sorely been lacking for quality courses for some time now. Things are looking up!

Long, fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Red Course is a long, open course designed to be the easiest of four courses at the Kayak Point Disc Golf Resort. Located on an old golf course, the fairways are wide and open, with trees coming into play on the drive on only a few holes. While this can make the course seem a bit repetitive on the drives, the beauty in this course comes from the pin placements and the elevation change. The course designers did an excellent job utilizing trees and elevation in the basket placement, making the greens unique and interesting. The elevation change provides challenge in shot selection and distance control.
-Tee pads are nice turf
-Tee signs are professional and informative
-Fairways are a fair width
-Grass in the rough is kept long, which is nice because it makes for more challenging footing and adds a degree of punishment for missing the fairway
-Good balance of fairway shapes to require left-to-right and right-to-left shots
-Pin placements are interesting utilizing trees and elevation to challenge putts
-Elevation change makes for challenging shot selection and distance control
-Location is beautiful, course is well-maintained

My favorite holes:
3: Signature hole. Beautiful drive over a small gully to a large landing zone. Upshot into a guarded green in the trees.
8: One of the few holes with trees off the tee. Multiple fair gaps to chose from on a big, left-to-right downhill shot.
10: Great risk/reward shot: throw as far as you can across the small valley but end up on a steep slope or lay up to the bottom and have a full throw uphill to get to the green.
13,15: Steep downhill shots challenge disc selection and speed control

Cons:

-The distance and lack of fairway obstacles can make the drives feel a bit repetitive, especially on the front nine. I threw max distance drivers off the tee on 13/18 holes (8/9 in the front 9). That being said, the mix between backhand and forehand/turnover shots gives variety to the long bombs.
-The long par 3s and relatively short par 4s make for a lot of putter upshots. There were only three holes where I used something faster than a putter on my second shot.

Other Thoughts:

This course is meant to be the easiest of an eventual four courses on the same property. While getting birdies is pretty achievable on most of holes, this course is fun! If this were the only course on the property, it might get a lower rating, but the proshop, par 2 putter course, gold course, future wooded white and blue courses, and future tap room will make this property a real destination in the coming years. Kudos to the designers, volunteers, and everyone who made this possible!

Final though: this course measures at over 8,000 ft, but with the distance between holes, I logged almost 4 miles of walking and 1,200 ft of elevation gain/loss. Carts are available, but it was a great walk on a beautiful summer day.
