Course is Fun, but Flawed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Kenney Park is a well kept up city park in Ligonier. The amenities are good and the park has a generally well maintained feel to it.
There is a large course map near the parking lot and great tee signs on every hole. Course navigation is generally good as long as you take a look at the map and look at the tee signs for the next tee location.
The tee pads are a little unusual to look at, but work well and are very grippy. While the same as the tees at Hidden Diamonds, they avoid the issue of having large holes in the tee pads.
The baskets themselves are very nice and in great condition.
There are a good mix of holes here, with nothing being particularly challenging. Holes 14 and 15 were very nice and I wish that this park had more holes like them. We replayed these two holes just because they were a ton of fun!

Cons:

The park was quiet and nearly empty when we visited, but I cannot imagine how much this course would conflict with other park goers on a busy day. The front 9 weaves in and around walking paths, drives, and private property. An errant throw could easily end up hitting someone or something. Holes 7's basket was less than 30 feet from a park bench. These problems become less of an issue on the back 9.
I felt that the amount of OB and Mandatories on this course was excessive and detracted from the overall experience. The OB I can understand. While I understand how some of the Mandatories are necessary with the design how it is currently, a bunch of these are just there and limit shot selection for no reason.
The front 9 feels like it was crammed into the space it occupies. Navigation is strange, especially on the first 6 holes as the course loops back on itself almost immediately. The back 9 flows better and seems to follow a much more natural route.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course was fun for a play, but I do not think I would make a specific trip back just for another round here. The safety issues and close proximity to other activities are more prevalent here than most other courses. The use of OB and Mandatories is the only thing that makes this course work.
