Pros:
A decent 9er on the verge of being average.
-Elevation: Kirvin mixes in a lot of elevation. There are some big, fun downhills on (5) and (9), but plenty of other holes have milder ups and downs. This enhances all the other shaping and makes it feel like a "real" course, not a dinky 9er.
-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: The first five are slightly good, with a lackluster final four. (1)-(4) play back and forth up and down a small hill, mixing in a couple of gaps off the tee and guarding baskets. Hole (5) is the signature, a sweeping downhill with early trees on the left and late trees on the right - it's reminiscent of a Toboggan hole. The final four are entirely open, and boring.
-"Friendly": Easy to play, hard to lose discs, well kept up.
-Flow: Easy navigation, except a long (5)-(6) transition. Also avoids overlapping fairways or any other big issues.
Cons:
-Amenities: Mud tees and snow don't mix well. They were soggy, treacherous messes on my appearance. The baskets are okay single-chain. No tee signs, though the tees are marked by numbered posts.
-Basket (5): A dilapidated mess, which is a real bummer on a doozy of a hole.
-Final Four: A real letdown. The front half may not be incredible here, but they deserved better than four wide open holes to conclude.
-Start Point: A long walk from the start (and finish) of the course to the parking lot.
Other Thoughts:
Kirvin has Decent to Good first four, a spectacular fifth, and a Passable final four. On the whole, the tees and bad basket were a big enough issue that it tops off my Reasonable list. Some improvements, and possibly a redesign of the end of the course, could easily land this one in upper Typical range.
