A Wholly Forgettable Safety Nightmare 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- nice concrete tees
- nice, color tee signs
- baskets generally in good repair
- located in a well-kept, clean park with natural areas

Cons:

- safety hazards everywhere (described below)
- tee 1 pointed completely wrong direction
- one basket installed crooked
- completely flat and uninspiring
- some obstacles due to trees, but otherwise mostly very short holes
- crammed into a relatively small area of a park
- back and forth, repetitive shots

Other Thoughts:

This is easily one of the worst courses I have played, and that's saying something considering the tees, baskets, and signs were all generally in great shape. That's probably all that bumped it up to a 1 instead of a 0.5 for me.

Kiwanis Park is a nice enough park, with a playground, baseball fields, walking paths, and some wooded/natural areas. None of this fits that well with disc golf, unfortunately. The safety hazards are everywhere. On hole 3 you're throwing straight at the playground. There were 2 kids on the swings when I was playing and I had to lay up my shot to make sure I didn't risk hitting them. On hole 4 in particular, you're almost throwing towards the road on the edge of the park, as well as directly over the walking path. There are numerous other opportunities to hit walkers.

While I appreciate Brookfield's effort to put a course in (something my home city has not done), this one feels forced. They clearly put in some effort by putting in the concrete tees, etc. but it feels crammed into an area it doesn't fit into, with 4 of the 7 holes basically going back and forth through the same area with nothing unique about them.

This course is for bagging and maybe beginner practice, but I can't imagine what would bring anyone back unless they lived extremely close. I would struggle to have fun here if the park was at all crowded, and with only 7 ultra-flat and short holes, there's just nothing to get excited about here.

Small practice course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

-nice multi use park w/playground, clean and maintained
-concrete pads on all 7 holes
-very nice signage at each tee
-nice mach2 baskets
-parking was easy and close to 1 & 7

Cons:

-only 7 holes
-all holes play close to other park features due to space
-a few baskets are close to the playground which was pretty full when I was there
-final 3 holes play right next to each other
-holes 1 & 2 play next to a little league field
-when I was here there was a picnic next to hole 2, forcing me to layup (didnt effect my rating but just pointing out what kind of park this is)

Other Thoughts:

This is a decent little park in the Brookfield neighborhood. Course is pretty open but some trees do force a few shots. I think the designers got the most they could with the space provided. If they had tried to squeeze 9 it would be impossible. Pads are nice, signs are quality and the baskets are in great shape. Could be an interesting safari course.

I was there on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and it was pretty much empty. On a busy day I dont see how anyone could get all 7 holes in without endangering someone. More of a 1.25 course but if a course is maintained, has decent equipment, etc. I bump it up rather than down.

If I lived close I would use it for practice but its not worth a trip for anything other than bagging if in the area.

Hole 1- 200 foot par 3. The tee pad does not point at the basket, I had to check to make sure I was aiming right. There are a few trees and shrubs in the fairway, baseball field to the right but really shouldn't come into play. There is a forehand flick or anhyzer route that is clear.

Hole 2- 140 foot par 3. Pretty much an open shot, 1 tree in the fairway about 100 feet. I had to lay up and take 3 here because 2 couples were having a picnic 10 feet from the basket. As I dropped my putt in for 3 one of the men exclaimed "10 points!"...

Hole 3- 125 foot par 3. Straight shot to a basket on a small mound. Playground right behind but you'd really need to miscalculated to hit it.

Hole 4- 275 foot par 3. Hole plays over a walking path to a basket near the road. I threw a forehand line out over the path but there was multiple lines to attempt different shots. Watch for people using the exercise equipment on the fitness path.

Hole 5- 285 foot par 3. Open fairway drive. Basket is 30 feet in front of the playground, left there is a walking path, and right is near the horseshoe pits. Another throw with multiple lines, if busy could be a dangerous hole.

Hole 6- 215 foot par 3. A few trees in the right hand side if the fairway. 30 feet behind is a nature preserve area and walking path.

Hole 7- 280 foot par 3. The bags and horseshoes are directly to the left of the basket. The little leauge field on the right doesnt come into play. There is also a walking path in the right side.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Kiwanis Park's DGC is a simple seven holes that occupy mostly one corner of a small city park. There are a few small trees and other such minor obstacles to force you to shape your drive around, as well as a road that intuitively serves as out of bounds. The distances are short, with nothing over 250' feet. Even the truest beginner can play this course. And there are at least a few holes featuring enough obstacles to teach some basic aspects of line-shaping and playing a disc's fade. Experienced players will enjoy ace runs galore.

This is probably the quickest course I've ever played. I managed to play a full round in 10-15 minutes tops and played most of it again in half that time. Tees are well-signed for such a small park which is a nice perk that makes navigation all the easier.

The park itself seems very well-kept.

Cons:

Beyond just being a very small, casual course with little in the way of obstacles and only a basic design, Kiwanis Park DGC sits a bit precariously amidst what seems to be a well-trafficked park. There's a little league field, a play set, and a few other park activities that abut the course, as well as walking paths that thread throughout. This means that conflict with other park goers is imminent if not actually omnipresent. You have to be very aware of and respectful to others if you're going to play this course safely. Thankfully the short holes at least mitigate the safety threat somewhat.

Hole 1's tee sits at a very odd angle in relation to its basket. Wedged next to the baseball field, this made the layout's beginning a bit unintuitive as well as made me further concerned about a beginner throwing an errant disc at other park goers.

Other Thoughts:

Kiwanis is a simple disc golf course that you can bag quickly as you hit up other courses in the area. It pairs well with say Central Park, a great, much more technical 9 nearby. Kiwanis is worth a visit, but only if you don't have high expectations and are conscious of others using the park.

Kiwanis Park DGC Has Multiple Safety Concerns! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This short 7 hole course is squeezed into a small park. Although I was able to play it and enjoy it, even with little league baseball being played on both fields, the safety concerns combined with the target audience is certainly a problem waiting to happen.

The course has nice sized concrete tee pads and brand new baskets. There are some fun throws here, when there is no traffic to contend with.

Cons:

# 1 basket sits too close to the ball field. Not a big safety concern but more of a nuisance if discs are thrown onto the field during a game. Also the tee pad is not aiming at the basket. I kept looking trying to locate a basket straight ahead.

My biggest concern is the hole where the playground is right to the left of the basket. Most beginners will hyser shots into this playground. And if they're teen age beginners, they won't be smart enough skip this hole or even yell "Four" before launching.

If they were ever any players here this would be a big problem, # 7 preferred route is probably right at and over the # 8 tee pad.

On all of the other holes, caution and common sense must be used when anyone is present. Like I previously mentioned, the one thing that teenagers are lacking, is common sense.

Other Thoughts:

I really can't believe that any parks department would ever OK this course being installed here in this tiny, usually congested area. There looks to be a nature area out behind the 7 and 9 tee pads. That might have been a safer and more prudent location for this little course.

Beginner 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- There are enough trees here to keep things interesting; throwing a RHBH hyzer isn't always the best option. #4 and #7 work well with a RHBH anny, for instance.
- Nice tees! New baskets! No signs or hole numbers anywhere though. Did not see a map anywhere either. Doesn't affect my rating either way.

Cons:

- This park is ridiculously small, these holes seriously play over and around park equipment almost the whole time. Shorter hole lengths overall; half are silly short and the rest are short to decent putter shots for an experienced player.
- Hole #1 is weird; the teepad suggests a funky RHFH hyzer... I threw a roller at a 60 degree angle off the tee. Yikes.

Other Thoughts:

- Another one for the books. I will play this course often because it is 1.5 miles from my house and it's a great place for me to work on short FH/OH/trick shots. Or to shamelessly do ace runs. If it was any farther I would never ever be back.

Worst Course in Chicagoland? 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

While I'm generally for more courses, this is one that probably shouldn't exist. Kudos to Brookfield for trying to put in a course in a largely underserved area, but they picked the wrong park and the wrong designer. The only pro is the equipment: the course features nice new Mach II baskets and roomy, level concrete tees.

Cons:

This course features a terrible layout. A baseball field, walking paths (on almost every hole), other tee pads, a playground, horseshoe pits, a street and permanent cornhole boards all can be hit without going too far off line. Judging by hole length, this course is intended for beginners. If so, their general lack of control and understanding of the need to yield to other park users is sure to result in non-players (or players on other holes) getting hit with discs.

Tee 1 (I think it was 1, there are no signs) was 60 degrees off line.

For all of the other obvious design flaws, this course still didn't flow very well.

Other Thoughts:

I don't see this course getting much play once the area course baggers have checked it off their respective lists. If I lived across the street, I would only use it for putting and upshot practice, if at all. Hopefully Brookfield has another park that these baskets could be moved to once it becomes obvious that this course is a spectacular failure.

Lawsuit waiting to happen 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

NONE

Cons:

This is a really poorly designed course that is a lawsuit waiting to happen. The designers (if you can call them that) crammed seven holes into an area where not even three or four holes would comfortably fit.

There are safety issues on ever single hole and if there is anyone else using the park the disc golf course is basically unplayable... at least not safely... although I'm sure some foolish people will try. Every one of the seven baskets is in close proximity to either a horseshoe pit, a baseball field, another tee pad, a walking trail, a rest room, a children's playground or the street and several are close to a combination of the above.

You might call this a beginners course due to the short hole lengths (estimated at 125' to 275') except that the amount of accuracy required to not hit one of the above mentioned park features and the people near them, makes this an undesirable destination for both beginners and advanced players.

It's a shame that concrete tee pads were even installed because I don't see this course getting enough traffic to warrant the time and effort required to install them. There are no signs that I saw and no numbers on the baskets so it's hard to tell which is hole one and which is hole seven. Also several of the tee pads don't really point at the baskets so navigation is sketchy at best.

Other Thoughts:

If only these baskets and tee pads could have been installed at a location that could actually accommodate them but alas. Perhaps after a lawsuit or two the village of Brookfield will be looking to unload the baskets to a park that could actually use them. Time will tell.
