Hit Or Miss Kiwanis

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 22, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Tee signs are illustrative, informative and utilize a wingnut system to tell the player which position the basket is in.
+ The bright baskets are strong and typically visible from the tees
+ Tee pads are flat, sturdy and long slabs of concrete.
+ The whole course takes place in a quiet, desolate, lovely and peaceful park, but...

Cons:

- ...The course contains mostly flat, nigh featureless and repetitive holes.
- There are no 'next' signs
- I don't remember seeing any practice basket or lost disc box.
- The roughage is untamed and aggressive.
-/+ Most of the tee pads are raised above ground. If you have a lengthy follow-through with your drives, be prepared for that sudden drop at the final step.

Other Thoughts:

I thought hole14 was the nicest to look at because of its hidden woodsy atrium and basket alcove. Hole1 was the weakest because it is straight, flat and wide open with no other features. Hole9 is undoubtedly the course's biggest surprise and star of the show. After 8 holes of rather plain and direct disc golf, the player is sucker punched with a water carry and some tree branches to avoid. Too bad the rest of the course doesn't match that level.

As a whole, Kiwanis/Rotary Park is a mostly plain course on a nice property. The road to get here is long and winding. You pass by fields, farms and far-reaching flatland. It is so far off the beaten path, that it really sells the sense of disconnection and desolation at this place. An active farm to one side and a quiet lake at the edge of a small forest on the other side make this a nice place to unwind, even if you don't play disc golf.

But as for the disc golfing, the fairways are mostly straight-on and flat. Sometimes they are wide open with a peppering of trees, and sometimes they are contained in the woods, but there isn't much a player needs to do to except throw ahead.

A few holes present you with curves to glide through. A few dense tunnels ask for the player's more cautious throws because of that dense rough. And the aforementioned hole9 presents players with a lovely water carry and wooded window to poke through. However, the challenges are pretty basic. It isn't a brilliant course but I feel like that's the point. The simple and straightforward fairways are easy to decode. This is a nice course for beginners who are ready to be challenged. It's just a shame that it's so far away from literally everything.

So, come here if you are a novice in search of that next step or a course bagger in search of some peace and quiet. But if you like some adventure and/or serious challenge in your disc golf, give this one a miss.

Pros:

-The course has been redone...and has some longer holes now since recent reviews.

-Concrete Tee's!

-Some signage.

-Some Wooded Areas with some harder shots!

-Island Hole #9

-Hole 6 plays near lake, and this is somewhat scenic.

Cons:

-I would say none of the holes are over 350'.

-Not well kept...fairways aren't well mowed.

-Baskets are not very mowed around, and thus create some headache.

-Hole 9 plays over the road, and is not really an Island hole...Seen so much better.

-Last 9 are kinda open, and might be fun to shoot around on, and work on some shots, but it's really only worth playing the first 9. However, last 9 are thus better kept.

Other Thoughts:

This is near where I grew up and I'm happy to see a course here. It's really not great, but there are a couple fun holes. The park needs some heavy maintenance to make this course nicer. If you are in the area, I recommend playing it for something to do. However, do not make this the sole purpose of your trip.
