Nice warmup or beginner course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Many short easy holes to build confidence with.
Interesting layout to get 18 holes in such a small space.
Great course to get you warmed up for some of the other courses in the area.

Cons:

The park is kind of dirty. There is trash laying around at a lot of the holes.
If you put a disc in the water, forget it. Its gone. That water is nasty.
There are 2 holes that throw directly at the parking lot. Be careful where you park, and be extremely careful of where you throw. It would be very easy to hit a vehicle, either parked or in motion.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, its not a bad course, but it definately is not one you put on a "Must Play" list. If I was in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to play it again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it.

Fun Short Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I would compare this course to a short Par3 course in golf. It is fun and quick. It is good for a beginner as distance comes into play on very few holes. So long and straight isn't needed...but what would you expect from a short course. This was also a lot cleaner then I expected from what I had heard of the course, so I was pleased with that.

Cons:

Tee boxes are dirt and unfortunately a lot of them are eroded to the point that they're not even remotely flat and in some cases roots are popping up in the way. There is not a lot of elevation change except for on the last 4 holes. While I haven't experienced this because I usually player very early in the morning I hear this place can get very busy because it is right on campus.

KWOOD 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Fast paced from start to finish. Trees on all sides of all 18 holes make things more technical than some courses. Great for working on you mid range shots as all you really need to play at this course is a Challenger and maybe a Buzzz. Great for an ego booster as shooting 10-15 under par is easily obtainable for anybody that has been playing for a couple of years

Cons:

Short course provides no chance to work on your drive. Hole #1 being the longest at 270ft. nothing here is out of reach. The water is horendous is a wet stinky sloppy mess. However there are some "Rakists" (RAY-kists) that constantly go in there and retrieve discs although they may charge you a dollar or 2

Other Thoughts:

Numerous people on here keep refering to hole #15 and they all have it wrong. Hole #13 plays 235ft through varying trees with water just 30ft behind it. And hole #14 plays off the road. Hole #15 is a short 155 footer downhill (it plays like a 90 footer)

Tight and trashy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

No fee to play and close to Western Michigan University for locals. Fairly short course good for those who don't throw far. Trees make for constant decision making challenges.

Cons:

The course is heavily used and most of the fairways are dirt. Play can be slow as large groups of college kids take a while to move through. Signage is poor.

Other Thoughts:

There doesn't seem to be much upkeep, regulations or maintenance by whomever owns the course.

Pros:

great course for people that are just starting out. some holes will test your accuracy and will require different shots easy to get a good score

Cons:

short course, some holes are really close to each other which you could easily hit someone on a errant throw, small parking lot, few tree stumps/ tree roots where tee is which could mess up throw.

Other Thoughts:

pond will eat your disc but its fairly easy to avoid. Hole one now has a cement tee pad which is a plus, many more to come i hope

Short and Rustic, But Also Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Short holes and a quick play, but still has its challenging shots. Probably the easiest courses in the Kalamazoo area. There is usually a very friendly and younger crowd playing, so it's a great place to for a beginner to learn without feeling like they are getting in the way of "pros". Only a few elevation changes and blind shots.

Cons:

This park is not in the greatest of shape. It is frequently dirty, although on the whole it has been cleaner as of late. I have never actually seen players being disrespectful of the course, so I would suspect that the surrounding non-playing neighbors are the more likely culprits of the damage. This course is set in a rather small space right near WMU, and surrounded on 3 sides by apartments and frat-houses.

Very small parking lot, often very full in the mid to late afternoons. Lot is also not well protected from errant throws.

Non-existent signage, and no course map. Local players are usually more than happy to point you in the right direction though, and it is not too hard to figure out on your own.

Tees are natural, and not very well-kept. Dual tees are sporadic and pretty much unnecessary.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, a very fun course despite it's obvious shortcomings.

The pond is quite treacherous and is a frequent disc-eater. Bring a floater, or consider skipping #4 and #11.

Thick Woods 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

great course to just chill with your friends after a day of classes. good variety of left and right hook shots. Forehands and Lefties rejoice. great place to meet new people, as some of the tees overlap to go to their receptive holes.

Cons:

The Water is extremely hazardous. Watch your disc, but that is really hard with all the damn trees. Can be rather loud with frat village being on 2 sides of the course. Mud and water cover half the course in the spring and fall.

Other Thoughts:

don't be fooled by #15 you can make it through all of the trees and end up in the lake behind. it sucks

Local Favorite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Heavy woods makes for tough shots, although short the course is a challenge in it's own. The people there are very friendly and are willing to help. Recently the course has been deep cleaned by a group of volunteers and is now looking cleaner than ever.

Cons:

Parking can be crowded and dangerous for your car depending on where you park. Kalamazoo police are very good at getting people illegally parked as well so keep this in mind.

Other Thoughts:

I myself attend Western Michigan University and I resent all of this "college kid" talk. Yes the course is occupied predominately by college kids but most are friendly and are almost always willing to help.

Short and Sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good mid-range holes, good accuracy practice. A few nicely placed water hazard holes. A few downhill holes and uphill holes. Can play it a few times in one short outing.

Cons:

No long holes. Discs lost in the water are irretrievable unless you want to get stinky. Parking is a little cramped, only 20 cars or so can fit. If it is your first time there and no locals are around you might not find your way around.

Other Thoughts:

Some very fun holes, like #15 playing off the road, or the two holes on peninsulas. Good lefty course/righty forehand/righty anheuser.

Pros:

A good starter course, if you can make your way through the stupid college wanna be disc golfers.

Cons:

Every aspect of the place is its cons. The place is a pit, garbage everywhere, beer bottles broken, the sess pool they call a pond and the hill billies swimming in it trying to sell you your disc that you lost two weeks prior, "for real cheap".

Other Thoughts:

The place needs to be demolished.

Pros:

short holes for beginner golfers, 18 holes,
wood chips along the paths.

Cons:

I played here years ago and the smell from the dirty water in the ponds was horrible! I decided to skip a few throws as to not risk my disc getting wet and my refusal to go in after it.

Litter was excessive. Small parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Lots of college kids play this course so it can be crowded. I mentioned to one group how poor this course was they seemed surprised I didn't like it.

I would never consider returning to this course. How can anyone rate it more than two stars?

Kalamazoo / Battle Creek has much better DG options.

Beginner, quick and easy. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 23, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Dog friendly, people friendly disc course.
If you want a good score or an ace this is the easiest course I have played in the Kazoo area to achieve one.
Densely wooded private area.
Good baskets!
This course is nice if you want to practice your short game and accuracy. If you are playing by yourself or small group your can play the course in 30-60 minutes. (Assuming the course is close to empty which is about half the time).

Cons:

This park between the hours of 3 pm-dusk M-F can be very busy.
Since most players out there are new there really is no golf etiquette.
The park was built on a old drainage site to the Arcadia neighborhood. Therefore the water is disgusting. You might see people wading and looking for discs in it though!
Some holes have broken glass everywhere, with bottles and trash thrown about.
Residential apartment buildings surround the area.
There have been hornets nest in some of the dead logs that are right next to some of the holes!
Tee pads are natural.
The course is not marked, however it is so short it would be hard to get lost. This course has no room for long drives or any type of long play.
Parking can be issue if the course is busy. Beware of parking outside the course, the parking authority will ticket you if you do not follow the posted directions on where to park.
I have seen plenty of cars hit by discs. Some of the holes are right next to the street.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great warm up or practice course. If you want to play fast come in the morning (by 2pm) when all the college kids are still sleeping. If you are visiting the area and only have time for a round or two, skip this course for some of the other courses that have much more to offer.

Pros:

Full 18 holes with more co-ed play here than other courses. Good baskets. Easy to follow despite not being marked well. A good hour-long workout with some fun mid-range play. Has some elevation changes. Bench at Hole 6 is a welcome rest stop.

Cons:

Short holes that reward luck rather than skill in some cases, usually skip holes 4 and 12 around nasty water, bad tee pads throughout are made worse by rain and snow. Lots of trash and graffiti. Nearby apartments and frat houses.

Other Thoughts:

Good for beginners or those with less time, others go elsewhere. Oshtemo completely outclasses this course, but Knollwood can be preferable in high winds. Despite being a short course, discs are easily lost in water holes, swamps or snow cover.

Short and Sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good beginner course. Short distances, but with plenty of trees to challenge the better player. Some elevation changes, and a few holes come close to the water (but the pond is quite small). Some of the holes seem to have two tees, but both are pretty easy. If a concerted effort to clean up this park were made, and some signs were installed, this might be a nice little park.

Cons:

Baskets are is poor disrepair and trash and graffiti seem to be a big problem here. No signs of any kind on the tees (nor on most of the baskets), but the locals seem to be pretty friendly and will help you find your way around.

Other Thoughts:

About what you'd expect of a course stuck in a tiny green space in the middle of college residence living. Seemed to be a lot of police visits while I was there (and I noticed a speed trap on Michigan Ave, so beware).

Fun Place to Start 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 27, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

All par 3, to my knowledge. It's pretty easy place to start, a few holes are near water, but are easy to skip if you don't want to go in the water. Can be pretty packed on the weekends being free, and right by a lot of college apartments. People are mostly laid back that play here.

Cons:

Sometimes you can get pretty backed up with lots of people.
Lots of Leaves in the fall.
Some of the baskets seem to be pretty tall compared to normal.
Worst water ever.

Other Thoughts:

Baskets are pretty nice pretty fun and quick to play if people not to many people playing.
