A rare permanent and free course on Oahu

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This is a permanent course. Unlike the majority of courses on Oahu, this course is always open for play
-Old DGA baskets are well cared for
-Good use of elevation, obstacles, and other components of the park. Longest hole just over 500', shortest just under 200'
-"next tee" arrows on baskets
-A pop-up pro shop was at the park when I visited, and I was told it is here most weekends.

Cons:

-Dirt tee pads
-no tee signs or information posted. Udisc is a must for wayfinding
-No parking at Kupuohi park. Was recommended by a local to park at Walmart which is less than a 1/4 mile down the road
-No water or bathrooms

Other Thoughts:

We stopped on Oahu on our last day in Hawaii, visiting Pearl Harbor in the afternoon. Thankfully I had brought some discs and was able to find this course. My biggest surprise was that there was a pop-up pro shop run by one of the locals with an excellent selection and variety of discs. He was able to give some recommendations on play as well as parking. While not an incredible course by itself, it is excellent for getting in a quick round if you are on the island and great for building community buy in. Bring a few discs if you're going to spend a few days on the island and you'll have a good time.

Free, Unrestricted DG on Oahu

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-You're playing DG in Hawaii
-Free and no restricted access needed
-Easy to get to
-Baskets OK
-Views impressive

Cons:

-Dirt tees
-Basic park style layout
-No amenities (but some about 2 blocks away)

Other Thoughts:

Kupuohi Park hosts a good DG course in Waipahu, Hawaii, about a 20 minute drive from the Honolulu Airport on Oahu. To be fair, a large part of the better rating here is the fact that you're playing disc golf in Hawaii. There are some nice views, especially from #4 and #6 and along #7. These give you views back toward Honolulu from a nice ridge. The DG itself...it's a park style course. There are dirt tees and average baskets that have seen better days. In any other locale, I'd probably give this course a 2.0, but it was the lone course I found on Oahu that is free and did not need special access to a military base. It checked a box for me of playing in Hawaii. The scenery, locale and accessibility made it work. As stated before, there is really no parking on site, we parked at the WalMart and walked up the hill. Get your drinks and a pit stop before you go. The play was OK, some elevation and some trees, but overall, YOU'RE PLAYING DISC GOLF IN HAWAII! Might try the local country club, if I ever make it back to the island, but if you're there, this is the free, unrestricted place to check Hawaii off your list.
