Hidden Away

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Homemade baskets that are OK (see cons)
-Beautiful area, quiet, away from most other activities
-Cool tee shot off of small dock for #8 (I think - see cons)
-Full wrap around with first tee near #9 basket

Cons:

-Natural tees
-Basket chains a little heavy
-2 LONG water carries (probably 400+ feet each on #2 and #8)
-Road in play on #4 (and #2 and #8 if you're not carrying the water)
-Parking lot in play on #2

Other Thoughts:

Lake Belva Deer is a lovely county park in rural Keokuk County near Harper, IA. The course is located on the NE corner of the lake away from most other activities. There is a boat ramp just west of the course, a gazebo near the #9 basket / first tee, and a larger shelter between the #4 fairway and #7 basket. None of these are really in play. There are 2 LONG water carries of over 400' each on #2 and #8. You can cheat along the road, but these make the course seem to cater to big arms while the rest of the course is very recreational. The homemade baskets are well done, but the chains are a tad heavy. Lines are pretty wide open with few trees, but there is a fair amount of elevation in play. I assume the tee for #8 is off the small dock, but was unable to find a tee sign. The tee signs here are quite faded and almost impossible to read. Play was fine as the area was quiet save a couple of fisherman on a Friday afternoon. I probably would have utilized the wooded area more and cut out the long water carries to make this a more palatable course. Could use some concrete tees and new signage. Kind of out in the middle of nowhere, so, unless I happen to be in the area, I probably won't play again.
