"That's the 'Lake?'" 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Lake Hills mostly eschews the lake and the hill for a 12-hole mix of "mostly open" and "wooded-but-short." The gauntlet is mostly ace runs for anyone other than beginners, and deuce-or-die is the name of the game here. Lake Hills is a reasonable beginner's course and, given it's location at the back of a church property, that's the intended audience. Many holes have alternative tees listed as "Ax" where x is the hole number. The course starts with the aforementioned "lake," really just a small pond, out of play on the left as the fairway runs adjacent to a church building on the right, up a small "hill" or slope, with an oak-surrounded pin position at the top. #1's green is the winner here, and #1 is probably the only really decently constructed hole you'll find here. 2, 3, and 4 crisscross the same open area, played to a cluster of baskets along the edge of the woods. Hole #'s 5-7 play in the woods, short little technical shots. Hole #'s 8-9 uses the front grassy area...out to the road and back. Hole #10 is another standout: a very short but very tight, well-designed fairway and green. #11 is the last wooded hole, although the schule is so thin that basically any bad shot has a great chance of recovering for par. Finally, hole #12 finishes to the left of the playground.
- Signage is great here. Detailed signs with accurate distances and hole layouts; alternative tees all are marked with highly visible, blue "A" signs; next tee signage is placed on trees and wooden red arrows embedded into the earth throughout the course makes navigation here a breeze. The OB on #9 is also well-marked and visible. Well done. Not disc related, but a set of "contemplation" signs along with "contemplation" benches a strewn fairly evenly throughout the course. So be aware others may be in some awkward places on the course, and might not be aware of the disc golf going on.
- Tees are a mixed bag of natural, gravel, carpets (soggy and a lil' gross when I played here), etc. The only tee pad I had a real beef with (and I'm usually not bothered much by sketchy tees) was #5's: its smooshiness, deep rutting, and overall "abject hole- in- the- ground" factor is a thang.
- Elevation is okay-ish here. Hole #1 clearly is the winner, with an uphill shot to a well-designed green consisting of oaks. #6 is a "from the bottom of the gully up-and-out" sort of affair. Unfortunately, the course is just so short in the wooded section that none of the elevation really comes into play in any sort of meaningful way.

Cons:

- With the "lake" aka pond not in play and the "hills" aka small slopes on two-holes-out-of-12, I found Lake Hills a bit of a misnomer and a huge disappointment considering the epic Loch Ness-looking terrain I viewed on the drive in. I say this a bit tongue- in- cheek; I understand they can't change the name. But seriously, there's no risk/reward, no punishment for errant or bad shots. Everything other than hole #'s 1 and 10 are a bit cramped, sketchy, and miss the mark. The close proximity of many of the baskets and fairways to each other doesn't well serve the target audience. Beginners and novices, most likely to spray their discs everywhere, would turn this place into a battlefield with more than 3 or 4 groups. Which brings me to my next point:
- Safety is a bit dicey here. The early cluster of baskets and tees near 3, 4, and 5; and #12 throwing more- or- less down a roadway and parking lot towards a playground, are the two most glaring examples.
- I was a bit turned off by the oatmeal-colored, soggy carpet tees. That just could be me, though.
- See mushy hole-in-the-ground tee comments regarding hole #5 above.

Other Thoughts:

- Being a proper God-fearing congregation, disc golf heathens are NOT allowed on Sunday Mornings from 8:30 am - 12:30 am -and- Wednesday Nights 6 pm - 8 pm.
- I wouldn't incur the wrath of god to bag this course, but if you need some redemption while in the area, this is marginally better than most local 9-hole courses.
