Never Saw an Osprey but TONS of Mushrooms

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is one of the better courses I have played in Eastern OH and I can say I have played quite a few. One of the primary factors I'm looking for on any course is the view and this one doesn't disappoint. It's a gorgeous state park on a lake. The walk is almost entirely wooded, in nicely shaded forest land, featuring plenty of views of the lake and a creek. I don't know if we got lucky the day we were there, but this place was exploding with mushrooms of all varieties. I mean they were everywhere.

The course has really nice amenities. There were benches frequently. I was honestly surprised at how many they had. They had tee signs that included bag hooks on each one, which was a nice feature. I liked the between hole signage and never had trouble finding my next tee. They only have one set of tees, but they are concrete.

The course itself is a fun challenging woods course that will make you throw good lines without ever feeling unfairly punishing. There are clear lanes to everything. I like the greens that they have set up, as well. They used the natural features to make some cool pensinsula greens, a green with a creek backing it and several with a few guardian trees, that all make for more interesting golf. I thought that the par was challenging for a sub 900 player and that's not a bad thing. Most of the holes seem to be in the 300 - 400 foot range and made for maybe easy pars, but challenging birdies.

Cons:

If I have knocks it is it did feel like the course was forehand heavy. Maybe that's just me. As a backhand predominant guy, it felt like I was pulling out my flippy discs most of the round. There is no elevation to be had and really no open fairways that I can recall. Neither of those things are bad in themselves, but led to what can feel like a repetition of holes until you get to the final 6 that start closing down towards the lake and spice up the variety.

They could use another bridge down along that creek, for sure. I hit that course on the day after rain and after one drive, you have the walk the length of the fairway to the bridge and then back down the fairway to your disc for many. There are also quite a few switchbacks that would probably play odd in a tournament.

Other Thoughts:

There isn't a restroom, so go past the course entrance to the boat ramp. That means no running water either. You also have to cross a road several times. Be cautious as traffic does move fairly fast there.

Uncle Miltie 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Traditional woods style course
~Informative tee signs, and plenty of directional signs
~Concrete tee pads
~Easy navigation & good flow
~Quaint out of the way state park
~Straightforward, good, fun disc golf (I love designs like this)

Cons:

~Limited parking
~No practice basket / warm-up area
~Unable to safely cross large creek on #14
~Course has you crossing a two lane road multiple times
~Some basket placements are too close to potential O.B. creeks/ditches

Other Thoughts:

Visited on a nice November day with a good friend. The park is easy to find and very inviting with the course starting right past a small parking lot. For a newly completed course this is very well established already. Concrete tee pads, formal hole signs, defined fairways, and plenty of navigational signs to help find your way around with ease. Overall the terrain is moderately wooded with subtle elevation changes, meandering creeks and ditches, and already feels broken in.

It's a traditional wooded course, with fair distances and somewhat tight lines requiring thoughtful disc selection and shot shaping. Numerous dog legs and elevation changes will challenge most players. Solid variety, and the course takes advantage of the land provided. It's a fun course to play and is very repeatable.

Parking at the course entrance is limited, but we had the place to ourselves so it wasn't an issue. A putting basket would be nice, but not necessary. While navigation is a breeze, you do have to cross a two lane road a couple of times. The biggest issue is when coming to Hole 14 which plays over a large running creek there is no bridge or safe passage to cross the water. There are some large rocks to traverse but it's nowhere close to being easy to cross. This limits you from playing 14, 15, and 16 without risking getting your feet and legs wet. I have been informed the Parks Department will be installing safe passage, but I question why the course was officially opened prior to this being addressed.

It's very good for such a fresh new course, and good overall. I can see this place getting improved upon over the next year or two and allowing it to find it's mark alongside the other courses within the area. Although it's not a destination course, it is one I could visit yearly.

Another Nice Addition to the State Park Scene! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

The new 18-hole course at Lake Milton State Park is the newest addition to the Ohio State Park system. It's not overly challenging, but it's still a very solid 18-hole course with a few top-tier holes.

+ The full course is only a few days old, but playing it, you would think it's been around for years. The fairways are in great shape, the tees are concrete, and there are permanent signs on every hole. It's ready to play!

+ This area doesn't have a ton of elevation, but the design takes advantage when the opportunity presents itself. #15, my favorite hole on the course, plays along a gentle hillside that slopes down toward the lake. #13's basket is located at the bottom of a steep drop off. There are several other holes with tricky placements.

+ I enjoyed the back 9 more than the front, especially the stretch from 14 to 18. Creeks and the lake come into play on each of these holes, some more noticeably than others.

+ It's easy to navigate. A few areas where you have to cross the road might get a little tricky, but the signs next to most baskets help guide the way.

Cons:

- I wish we got some more water holes sprinkled throughout the course rather than throwing them all at the end.

- A few holes tend to blend together at times. Flat and heavily wooded with a similar hole shape.

- No chance to really air it out here. All but one hole is under 400 feet, and even the longer holes are still heavily wooded.

Other Thoughts:

Having a beautiful state park system like Ohio does is already a blessing. Adding disc golf to many of these parks makes them that much more appealing.

Come on out and enjoy some heavily wooded lakeside disc golf!
