First quality course in Prince William 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 12, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Open fairways of ball courses make for bombs-away drives for disc golfers. This small par-3 ball course has a rolling terrain that you will definitely enjoy.

Has a pair of baskets per hole, so you can play (as I did in a recent tournament) from the disc golf pad (ball-golf blue tee) to the orange baskets in loop no. 1 (holes 1-9) and again to the blue baskets (holes 10-18).

Prince William County, VA finally has a superb disc golf course. Two others (on middle-school properties) are in disrepair if playable. Potomac MS moreso than Unity Braxton (the former Stonewall Jackson MS).

Baskets generally are tucked into woods or on hills, so there is often a putting challenge (avoiding rollaways or dealing with guardian trees). Or putting over a hazard!

I love that the blue loop is distinctly harder than the orange loop. If you are a mediocre player like me, you might play both loops. Or just the orange baskets. If you are an advanced player, you might choose to play only the blue baskets.

As a ball golfer as well (this is my home course), I can play both forms of golf in the same space! Although disc golf has largely supplanted ball golf for me these days.

Bunkers and greens provide real challenges, especially for us weak-armed people who often cannot make it over the green from the tee or a long approach.

It's a new course! With new, permanent baskets now!

Cons:

Soft opening of the DG course at Lake Ridge is still up in the air as of this review... I played the disc-golf course in a tournament this year and the short loop (twice) in 2019, after another tournament (then with temporary baskets). [UPDATE: The disc golf layout is now open. Read about it here: ]https://www.lakeridgegc.com/disc-golf ]

Other Thoughts:

During the 2019 outing, I had ball and foot golfers on the course with me. Ball golfers move much faster than disc golfers, but foot golfers are slower than disc golfers. Generally speaking, of course.

So whenever this course opens to the general public outside of a tournament setting, keep that in mind. Just let the ball golfers play through.

They will feel (no doubt) like the course is theirs first (which it is), so let's play nice. Please follow all the TBD required ball-golf rules/etiquette/dress code, etc.

So that we can keep coming back!

Note also that the course appears to still be operating under some COVID restrictions: https://www.lakeridgegc.com/n...covid-19-faqs

Something different in NOVA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

FULL DISCLOSURE - I assisted in design and installation of this course and have run events here.

*Two pins per hole either give different looks or different challenges. A full 18 - playing to orange and blue baskets in two loops - will mean varying strategies and plans of attack off the tee.

*Shot variety! There's lots of room to deploy forehand, backhand, overhand, rollers, etc.

*Placement golf. OB greens and hazard bunkers are pretty serious risk-reward propositions. On holes like 3 and 6 to the blue baskets, anyone with less than elite power is going to need to make some serious disc selection and touch/speed control decisions.

*Customizability. Beginners, families, and juniors can easily play the course from the white or red golf tees to eliminate some distance from the holes and attack in a more straightforward way.

*Wind, elevation, etc. are all great for learning the principles of flight and disc selection.

*There's simply nothing else quite like it in the NOVA area. Not as punishing as Giles's OB, not as straightforward as Franklin Park, but longer and more open than Burke, Pohick, Bull Run, or Bluemont.

Cons:

*No tee signs (and there likely will not ever be tee signs).

*Currently no permanent, dedicated disc golf teeing areas. We simply are using the blue golf tees.

*Some mild lost disc potential if things go really awry, particularly on the right side of hole 7.

*Only 9 holes total.

Other Thoughts:

The first public course in Prince William County is a very good addition to the stable of courses available to players in NOVA, and a great complement to the existing courses.
