Lake Thunderbird DGC

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Some actual nice elevation in the first few holes. Hole 1 starts you off on top of a hill which you have to throw across a valley onto yet another hill that is even taller. The lake is to your left but you'd absolutely have to pull a Richard to get it into the water.

- The course design was actually pretty decent. I felt really good parking my shot for birdie on hole 5 which you have to throw a RHFH or LHBH through a tiny gap out onto a wide open field from about 260 feet. If you don't hit the gap, your disc will fall right into a huge thorn bush.. or you'll get a nasty kick placing you into more thorn bushes. Whoever designed this course absolutely did the best job they could've with the tiny little bit of land they were given.

- The area itself and the land it's on is very scenic. The neighborhood itself isn't a super wealthy rich one. It's actually mostly smaller 1 story older houses that seem to be more summer rentals than family homes. The first hole at the bottom of the hill right next to the lake will definitely make you want to sit down and just admire the serenity of nature before shanking or parking your first throw.

Cons:

- Extremely forgiving pars. The only time par 5's should ever be a thing is when the holes are 800+ feet. That being said, the course is aimed at beginners and neighborhood kids getting into the sport so a par 5 350+ foot hole does seem pretty logical. So if higher pars make you scoff, you could always play them as all par 3's.

- Grass teepads. Cement or rubber is always better but I have a feeling not many people utilize this course considering it's in a private neighborhood with signs warning you about needing a parking sticker around every corner.

- The tee signs are those cheap white fiberglass(?) signs that give pretty basic info like hole #, par, and a basic layout of the hole. Again, totally fine for a course like this.

- I felt like I was definitely not suppose to be there. Even driving into the neighborhood I was seeing signs stating you have to have a neighborhood sticker on your windshield in order to even park there. The second I drove into the parking lot I was greeted with yet another sign stating I needed a parking sticker to be there. Also, there was a camera attached to a pole right outside the tennis courts which were near hole 1's tee and the camera is pointed directly at you. Kind of weird.

- I can imagine that during the summer when the pool is actually open, there won't be many available parking spots and I'm sure they will actually enforce the parking sticker rule.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I thought this was a pretty decent neighborhood course. I would absolutely love to have this down the street from me. The day I played here (yesterday 3/19/23), I had zero issue and parked right next to hole 3's tee which I thought was hole 1 according to uDisc. If you decide to use uDisc's layout, keep in mind that hole 9 and 10 on there are actually 1 and 2 and hole 1 listed on uDisc is actually hole 3 and so on and so forth.

As I said before, this is located in a private neighborhood so your best bet is to come here during the late fall/winter/spring as they seem to be pretty lax about people parking in the lot. I was totally expecting to look over and see someone checking out my car to make sure I had the sticker but I'm assuming during the cold months when the pool is closed, they don't really care about seeing if you actually live there. I could've also just gotten lucky. Either way, play this one with caution if you do decide to barge it.
