No Marked Tees, So I Made My Own… And Got 17 Aces. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.757 Rating) A pleasant park style course needing some directions.
- ACEABILITY - Obviously read bait on the title, but this course will routinely have chain music ringing on busy days... If the tees can be found. The hole distances come in at a 211 foot average, with a half dozen shy of the 200 foot mark. Skilled locals will be racking up multiple aces a year here and newer players could even end up with one. I'd say the ace potential is 5 times higher here, compared to the typical course. That aspect always seems to provide a little fun for me, and I believe for others as well.
- CHAINS - Adequate machIIIs in great condition. The numbered red placard on top of the basket looks fantastic.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - About average, but I included it up here anyways because it was one of the better aspects. There is a pond that comes into play or is in view in the backdrop on several holes. The vegetation was generally healthy and vibrant. On the flipside, there are several areas of exposed dirt and sand. Also, the dam on the east side of the layout has some industrial piping and control features that are very much eyesores. I thought overall that the good canceled out the bad.
- LOCATION - Two courses in the same park. It's about a 1,200 foot walk over to tee (10) on the other course from basket (18) on Municipal Red. Great for baggers like me, although I bagged them on different trips.

Cons:

Super frustrating to follow.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - It's absolutely horrible. I contacted MikeK to get his take on this as it wasn't noted in his review. Turns out, he played during a tournament, and everything was marked great for the event. Sadly, none of those markings still exist and nothing permanent has been put in its place. The only markings out here, are on the baskets. I only found three unmarked tee boxes during the round. I used a navigational app and still walked the wrong way several times. I threw at wrong baskets and threw at spots with no basket. Getting around was a disaster for this solo first timer. It sucked a lot of the fun out and I took off almost a ½ point for this major flaw.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - This is a super short course, as in a 3,800 foot 18 hole course. I grabbed putters and mids at the supposed tee box almost every time. As noted, there is some water to avoid and there are several moderately wooded holes too. However, overall it's just lacking some luster for being too simple to me. I didn't play well and shot 6 down on 17 holes. I got rained out on (18). Even par will likely draw a sub 850 rated round.
- LOST DISC POTENTIAL - I added way more score for the water features, than took away due to the lost disc potential. For Intermediates like me, we might lose one once every couple hundred rounds. However, Novice players will throw it in the drink from time to time on a bad grip-lock. My advise to them, don't throw your best plastic on the couple water holes out here.
- SPACING - The course is crammed into a tight space. Players will need to be cautious of other players as well as non players as there are some walking paths in play on a few holes.
- LAYOUT FLOW - Three holes (11, 12 and 13) play across a bridge in a different section of the park. Its quite the disjointed flow gap in what otherwise is a very compact layout. A very minor issue.
- TEES - Of the three tees I did find, they were all in sad shape with uneven packed sand within the timber frame. I surmise that the other tees must all be dirt and grass.

Other Thoughts:

Municipal Red feels half completed. I'm sure it opened with a bang when the baskets went in a couple years ago, but then they just never came back to finish the other critical components for the course. If the tees and signage were to ever be respectfully completed, I'd rate this a 2.5 course all day long. It's got a nice setting with some fun easy-going shots. As is, this only equates to a 1.75 course to me. I would not recommend this course to out of towners. There are plenty of better courses in town, included the adjacent Langan Park course.

Short but tricky 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 22, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+A little bit of everything on this course: some water, some elevation, lefty & righty holes, some OB
+Though short, not particularly easy to shoot way under par
+Great beginner course
+In same park as Langan (Municipal) disc golf course

Cons:

-No really long holes to let it rip
-Natural tee boxes have some roots/mud

Other Thoughts:

Even though Municipal Red is a very short course, it's pretty entertaining and very well designed. Ace runs abound for those who know how to bend a disc around trees. Several fun downhill shots. A few baskets placed close to OB sidewalks or culverts to make up for the short distances. It's a great place for experienced players to tune up their midrange game.
