I Can't (believe I would) Drive (out of my way to play disc golf at) 55

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was the first course I played on a day of bagging courses in South Carolina's Upstate. I left Charlotte at 5:20 and got here about 20 minutes before the sun came up. What do you do when you're at a course before the sun comes up? That's right, you play the first three holes in the dark.
- Thankfully, there were lights near the baskets on holes 1 - 3. By the time I got to the 4th hole, it was in an open portion of the campus, and it was getting considerably lighter out.
- The six holes are spread out across the campus, with the first hole in the far back portion of the campus (on the edge of the band's practice field) and the final hole next to the main entrance in the front.
- Hole #2 is the only decent hole. Uphill to a basket under a large oak tree. (Disclaimer: I think it was an oak tree. It was dark.) This type of layout is always going to be successful, even on a basic school course.
- #4 is the other decent layout. Slightly uphill. Slightly having trees come into play. Nice, longer hole.
- Holes 1, 5, & 6 are essentially straight open and uninspiring. #3 is in the woods. Nothing of note here.

Cons:

For a simple, six-hole school course, it's perfectly suitable. For a disc golfer looking to play a round, it's lacking, both figuratively and literally.
- Six holes on a course out of the way. Not ideal when you're looking to play.
- A long walk between #3 and 4, and a much longer walk between #6 back to the lower parking lot by the first basket.
- I never saw anything indicating tee markers in the ground. Granted it was dark and I was trying to find tee areas based solely on pictures on UDisc.
- Why only six holes? If the course is this spaced out already, would it be that hard to add 3 more baskets?

Other Thoughts:

Not only did I show up at 55 super early on a Saturday morning, but I apparently also showed up on a morning the school was hosting a band competition. Imagine my surprise to see a parking lot full of buses and cars at 7a. Imagine everyone else's surprise to see a random guy walking in and out of the woods on the campus.
- By the time I finished #6 and walked back towards my truck by the first basket, there were already students lined up on the band's practice field. I wasn't about to press my luck by trying to play through a bunch of students.
- This course did seem out of the way, but it was only 30 minutes to Southside Park's course in Greenville. So, you're not that far removed from other courses. Plus, you're less than 10 minutes to the Laurens County Park course.
- For a mediocre course, it was a memorable round. Being OCD, I sadly can see myself returning to play the first three holes in daylight.
