Lawnview Park

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 2, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

-- Creek/water comes into play on about half of the holes. Some of this water appears to be seasonal and overflow from the creek/ditch.
-- Unlikely to ever be crowded.
-- There aren't a lot of trees, but they are generally well used. Hole 1 is a good example with a few old trees somewhat guarding the basket after you have thrown 350-375 feet across an open field.
-- Holes 3-7 are the best stretch; if the rest of the course matched this stretch, it would raise the course rating at least half a point. Three is 336 feet with trees and low-hanging limbs near the tee and a drainage ditch and other water to navigate in the first 100-150 feet. Some of this water appears to be seasonal. On my April 2023 visit, everything inside the circle was wet/muddy while the majority of the course was bone dry. Getting to four tee pad required navigating a lot of mud/water. Hole 4 is 330 feet with a some trees to navigate around about 100 feet from the tee. Water is left of the fairway, but it would take a really bad shot to reach it. Five is 480 feet with the creek/ditch left that is definitely in play. However, the right side is wide open, so you can easily play it safe. Six is the best-looking hole. It's 221 feet over a creek with trees on both sides. The opening is fairly wide, so experienced players shouldn't have any problems, but there is some challenge, and the aesthetic is nice. Seven is 533 feet and is intended as a tunnel shot but you can easily go right or left outside of the trees and play it as an open hole. A ditch lines the right side, so that adds some challenge/danger.

Cons:

-- Crossing the creek from 6 tee to 6 basket is very difficult. You either have to jump or do some serious backtracking.
-- Course starts and ends with really blah holes.
-- Parking is on the street, which is narrow. If you park on Hollis Avenue near the corner of La Vern Avenue, you are near No. 1 tee and No. 9 basket. Holes 1-3 play east, beside Hollis Avenue. Holes 4-7 play west, toward Silberstein Elementary School. Eight and nine play toward Hollis Avenue.
-- No map, water or restrooms on site.
-- No seating.

Other Thoughts:

-- In the probably dozen years between my visits here, little has changed. Tee signs were added, and missing/damaged baskets replaced. That's it. The course is a decent place to play if your live close by, and the openness provides a good chance to work on distance.
-- Course is beside an elementary school, so getting to and from the course during drop-off and pick-up times could be challenging.
-- Lawnview DART station is across Scyene Road from the park.
-- Between the crossing at 6 and the amount of mud and casual water, this isn't really cart friendly despite being a flat and open piece of land.
-- Baskets are a mix of Mach V and Mach III. The older baskets look rough, but they still seem to catch fine.
-- Maintenance is likely a minor issue. This has the feel of a park that gets mowed every few weeks or maybe just once a month. I appears to get very little care otherwise.

Yawning Lawn Offers Serene View

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 15, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wide meadow offers plenty of room for long drives.
+ course fulfills desire to better utilize parkland
+ creek influences play on half the holes
+ uncrowded and often empty
+ scattered trees incorporated into design well as obstacles when possible

Cons:

Course does a better job of filling space than generating much excitement.
- mostly wide open, lengthy fairway throws
- awkward means of crossing creek on hole #6 (best to backtrack near #5 tee)
- little shade despite several old growth trees

Other Thoughts:

INFO
Course sits in east Dallas neighborhood park near White Rock Creek and shares space with a small playground and ball fields, the park's only other amenities. Nine hole layout covers eastern half of park, winding around both sides of casual creek. Parking available on Hollis Ave. which borders north side of park.

EVAL
It's understandable why a disc golf course was proposed for this park to take advantage of its expansive field and minor water features which were otherwise underutilized. The course spreads out across vacant sections of the lawn away from regular park use, making the most of available trees and a creek bordered by lush grasses. The course invites players to peacefully stroll the lawn in places which would otherwise be unvisited, but too many filler holes simply throw across empty areas to connect to more interesting holes with obstacles. Despite the tall trees in the park, most of the course plays in the open with little shade. Also, the layout plays rather long with fairways that mostly stretch either to fill space or add difficulty to make up for a lack of other obstacles. Perhaps short tees should have been included to make it more appealing to younger players in the neighborhood.

Sadly, this course previously suffered from vandalism and neglect. Half its baskets were missing or damaged. It's a pattern seen before in this area (see NOTE below). As of spring 2022 the missing and damaged baskets have been replaced with new Mach V baskets to complement the older Mach III baskets, making this course complete once again.

NOTE
Fifteen years prior to Lawnview being established, a course installed only a few miles away in another east Dallas neighborhood at Crawford Memorial Park met a similar fate. That course was pulled after repeated vandalism despite efforts to establish and maintain it.

LAYOUT
(Course starts in NE corner of park close to intersection of Hollis Ave. and La Vern Ave.) The first hole covers an expansive, open fairway on the lawn leading to a row of old growth trees guarding the green. Past the playground hole #2 fills space by throwing across an open field. Next hole #3 ducks beneath low-hanging limbs down a fairway studded with trees on the right and an encroaching, drainage creek on the left. Hole #4 then reverses direction along the other side of the creek and similarly throws past multiple trees on the way to its green.

Hole #5 flirts with trees and creek on the left along a gently curving fairway to an open green in a field. Hole #6 crosses the creek with a short throw between trees. Hole #7 covers the most ground with a double row of young trees lining the middle of the fairway down its entire length. A ditch and high berm lie close by on the right atop which a roadway marks the southern edge of the park. Another filler hole throws to the interior of a bare lawn and wide open green for hole #8. Then the course finishes with hole #9 crossing the lawn to the corner of the park near the start with a tree lined road to the left and a school fence line on the right.

They tired their hardest to put in a good course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Each hole has a teesign just in case you need to know where your throwing to. Set on a nice open park with a creek that runs thru. The creek is a nice addition to make a couple of the holes more difficult. Course plays in a loop so you can park anywhere and pick up playing. Park is mostly clean of trash.

Cons:

Not much difficulty. The big downfall for me was on bridge to get to Hole 6's basket. I had to back track past Hole 5 to be able to cross the creek. Not sure how often the Park and Rec mows there but it could use a little more attention. Many of the holes had standing water from the night before, so the course doesn't drain well.

Other Thoughts:

Good course to practice big throws and field work. Would be a great course to practice driving with a putter. They did the best they could with what that had. They tired their hardest to put in a good course.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 5, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The designers didn't have much to work with in this park. I like how the course has tee signs and natural tees for solid footing. The course is also one big loop so it is easy to pick up and play at any point. The designer makes good use of the creek that comes into play on holes 5 and 6. Hole 7 there are two rows of trees to try and add to the challenge.

Cons:

This course is flat and open. When I played it was pretty windy and with the lack of challenge I wouldn't come back and play it. The parking lot is on the opposite side of the park so I parked in the neighborhood and started on hole 4. The baskets are old and only single chained.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't go to far out of my way to play this place. If you want to do a "field session' this is the course for you.

Not much to work with 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are tee signs and baskets

Some of the holes are designed quite well.

Some of the holes are wide open, but are the longest holes on the course.

Cons:

No distance on the tee signs.

This course will have very muddy spots most of the year. Do not try to play after a rain.

Other Thoughts:

The course is in a flood plain, it is very flat. The wind was ripping today making for added difficulty.

For me, there were enough good holes to excuse the long open holes. The holes meander along a ditch with very large trees sprinkled around.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 11, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-signs and baskets for each hole
-natural tees are level
-trees, ponds, and seasonal water are used well on several holes
-layout makes an easy to follow loop that avoids the playground, soccer fields, etc.
-bridge for crossing the creek on hole 6

Cons:

-signs only have the hole number, no distances or map
-most of the holes are pretty wide open (1, 2, 5, 8, 9), the most trees are on holes 3 & 4

Other Thoughts:

Lawnview Park has a simple 9 hole layout with mostly longer holes to compensate for the relative lack of obstacles. The available clusters of trees are used well: on the green of hole 1, on the fairways of holes 3 & 4, off the tee on hole 6. There is a line of trees on hole 7 which are still pretty young and small but will one day be a good obstacle.

A small creek runs along the south border of the park and lines the right side of hole 7 (beyond the creek safe or OB?). This creek runs into a small pond near the basket for hole 6. You don't want to throw deep or especially deep right on that hole. Another creek extends north from that pond and you have to cross this creek off the tee on hole 6. It then connects to another small pond that separates the fairways of holes 2 and 5. The pond is not in play so much on hole 2 but definitely in play along the left side of hole 5, the longest on the course where your big drive could definitely fade out. Finally, another creek extends out of that pond and separates fairways 3 and 4. This creek as well as some of the other water connecting the two ponds looks seasonal and is probably dried up in the summer.

The patches of trees and water in play definitely spice up what is otherwise a pretty boring open course. It's a good option for catching a quick round if you're in Dallas but not a place where you would go out of your way to play.

This park is directly across the street from Lawnview Station on the DART green line. That makes it a great option for those without a car using public transit, along with the new course at Founder's Park in Oak Cliff, which is on a stop for the Dallas Streetcar.
