Pros:
+ Plays a quick loop
+ Nicely maintained grounds, though the grass was starting to get high enough to slow discs down upon landing
+ There is some *slight* elevation in play, most apparent on 8 & 9 where the berm surrounding the church actually blocks your view of the basket from the tee. IMO this makes these 2 holes the signatures of the course.
+ Beginner friendly, most holes are on the short side so ace run opportunities abound
Cons:
- Basic, single-chain Bentley baskets
- Other than the property-related obstacles there's not much in the way of shots needed.
- No tee pads or even markers for tees anywhere. I teed off on most holes next to the basket I just played
- No signage of any kind except for the marker at "Tee 1" (as seen on the map here), and that's not even a tee sign, more of a small sign designating the course with a QR code that'll take you to the church's website
- Even with the map navigation can get a little tricky. Especially after hole 4, where you see a basket dead ahead and assume it's 5. This is wrong - that is basket #6. Learn from my mistake and pay close attention to the map. Hole 5 is on the other side of the "amphitheather", and the map has you play around it RHFH.
- No trash cans/benches/restroom/etc. I'm not sure about available amenities in the church.
- Plays around and thru the church property. #3 has a swingset between you and the basket, #5 has the aforementioned "amphitheater", #7 plays near and over a small walking path, and #8 & #9 play behind but along the parking lot; so there are lots of holes that could be rendered unplayable depending on what's going on at the moment.
Other Thoughts:
Boulder Valley Church of Christ's 9 hole course was an Eagle Scout project by a local troop. I've played Boy Scout courses before and had a fun time, Camp Binachi outside of Meridian, MS comes to mind. However this course makes Camp Bincahi look like Beaver Ranch in comparison. It's super bare bones. There are 9 baskets out there and if you use the map you'll figure your way around quickly. A round might take you 20 minutes. That said the complete absence of marked tees and signage just leaves you wondering if the right term for the course isn't "half-assed".
My lasting impression is that of a course worth bagging (espcially if you're in the area, there are several other courses to bag nearby), but other than baggers and beginners it's left well enough alone. If I attended church here I'd bring my bag every week though, it IS a course, of course.
Also, don't get confused on the way here - there's a Boulder Valley Christian Church very near to here on S. Boulder Rd. that is sans-DG.
