Onesie Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great parkland layout. Solid mix of technical and wide open holes for every skill level. Several longer holes to let a disc fly.

Cons:

If the wind is blowing, the course can play very difficult. Exposed bedrock on 17 and 18 can tear up your discs.

Other Thoughts:

Very pretty landscape for a course. No interference from other park users.

The More Chains The Merrier

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 7, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A lot of parking and the first tee is easily visible from the parking lot. The course also makes two pretty good 9-hole loops to the parking lot if you want a shorter round.

Bathrooms near hole 12 and 16.

All DisCatchers (including the practice basket) are still in pretty good condition for being so aged. The yellow is starting to fade, but they still catch a disc well.

The front half has lot of greens that are tough to get into: 1 long left, 3 behind a clump of trees, 5 long, both long pins on 7 and 9 in the cedars. Going long on 1 or 7 will get you stuck in the trees pretty badly.

Several really good holes. 1 has some trees about 300' down the fairway that you have to get underneath to run a birdie, 8 with a 35 foot wide clump of trees to get around, 17 and 18 both with long fairways and then getting into some technical greens.

Excellent mix of fairways. Some tough off the tee, some open, uphill/downhill changes... if I could ask for something more it would be a little more left/right rather than straightaways.

There are now two baskets on every hole! 18 more blue DisCatchers were added to the park September of '22. Makes a welcome addition and now you have even more reason to go around twice!

Cons:

Holes 1, 2, and 5 play alongside a city maintenance building which has a fence that can you can shank a shot over. Don't climb the fence (or you might end up with a broken leg), the workers routinely check for discs.

A lot of trees have become overgrown and haven't been cut back (2, 4, 13, 14). This makes some interesting par 3s into frustrating par 3s since lines that used to exist don't exist anymore.

The rock slab fairways on the last 3 holes can really chew up your rims.

When the rough gets rough, it gets really rough. I've spent 30 minutes looking for a disc in 2-foot high rough. Mowing can really be an issue.

The tee signs were updated in October of 2020... and they're somehow worse than the old, outdated ones. The illustrations of tree placements and pin spots are wildly innacurate. Several distances are clearly off by 50-75 feet. And the par 4s... ohhh the par 4s... at a professional level, almost every pin here would be a par 3. Being a city park I believe some should be par 4s, but 4 middle, 5 middle, 8 short, and 14 long (270' par 4 is the ultimate lol) are not, and even 7 and 15 long are on the edge. If you want to see how bad the tee signs are, check out the picture of hole 4's.

Some local yokel found a swimming hole behind 7's basket this summer and now a lot of neighborhood kids get in the way of the fairways on 7, 8, and 9.

Other Thoughts:

This is an excellent course in design, not so much in upkeep. The use of the land was done extremely well, and no two holes feel the same. There's a fair amount of birdie opportunity, but some of the back 7 in the woods are a tough par. The level of difficulty at Legacy really depends on the pin placement.

If the overgrowth were taken out and good signs were installed this would be a very different course. But regardless, this is one of the better B-tier courses in the Kansas City area. Didn't realize how blessed I was to have this gem as my home course.

Honey Locust Trees and a Secret Waterfall 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Concrete Tees and signs at each hole (though Confusing)
- Multiple Pin Locations
- Bag holders at each tee
- Frequent benches on course
- Course Map by parking lot
- Practice Basket
- Permanent Bathrooms
- Playground and Shelter near parking lot
- land is dedicated to disc golf so not too much worry of random people wandering onto fairways
- no significant brush to lose discs in
- moderate use of elevation and trees to shape fairways

Cons:

- Tee signs appear outdated, most holes appeared to have 4 pin locations, but signs occasionally only showed two and no way to indicate which location it is in.
- Lots of trees with massive thorns (Honey Locust I believe)
- Fairway grass was kinda long so not great for rollers or skips
- I found navigation to be confusing, if you take a picture of the course map you can easily figure it out.

Other Thoughts:

I've played this course in the early spring and in the middle of summer. The course is definitely plays differently in the summer once all of the greenery has grown in. Additionally I played this course a few days after large rainstorms and flooding hit the area and didn't have any problem with mud.

I thought the design of the course was decent but some of that depends on the hole placements when you play it. Trees were used to limit routes and force different shots, however I found that many of the trees seemed younger/smaller and it was really easy to just hyzer your way around them. As these trees grow taller however that will help limit these routes and force more technical shots.
This course is designed for RHBH, I threw only 1 forehand on the course. Some holes played up or down elevation but it just seemed like they used it to extend or shorten holes. You never really played on the side of the hill or had to worry about a putt rolling away from a basket.

As we approached 7s tee pad a husband and wife came from the field to the east soaked head to toe. The wife excitedly told us of a secret waterfall somewhere to the east. The husband was not happy that his wife revealed the existence of a nearby secret waterfall. Come hurry and play this park before the secrets of the waterfall are revealed to all!

The biggest improvements I would appreciate on this course would be improvements to the navigation. Marking on the tee signs the direction to the next tee would be appreciated. Also maybe updating the signs and indicating current tee placement.

Overall this was a very fun course. My family of complete novices were able to enjoy themselves because the rough wasn't too punishing at any point.

A Fun Place to Throw 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Creature comforts!

High-quality benches at every hole. Informative signs with alternate pin positions, accurate disances, and pars. Bag hangers. Bridges over the streams. Next tee visible from every pin but one, IIRC. Double-loop configuration (pick up / drop off @ your car after the front nine).

Good variation in shots required. Lots of long bomb opportunities until you hit #11, lots of technical finesse required from #12 through #16. Moderate up- and downhills, nothing that would require steps to be cut. No crossing faiways or fairways crossing paths / roads.

All in all, a very comfortable place to play - leave your worries at home, go out and throw a round or two, relax and have a good time. That's what this course is all about.

Cons:

Given the gently rolling terrain, the designers did a good job here. The only thing that's missing is the drama factor that comes with radical elevation changes, wide water obstacles, and other environmental risk / reward elements. This is a great place for a fun round and high enough quality to merit a stop of you're passing through town, but in no way could it be termed a destination course. That (probably) wasn't the intention so for what it is - a fun place to play - Legacy solildly meets expctations.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really good course for rec players, and I have a feeling that its character changes dramatically when the trees are in leaf. Looking forward to playing it again, and again, and again.

two courses in one 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 20, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Large concrete tees and great baskets. 10/10

Course maintenance is great, all four times I've been there it was mostly mowed down in the fairways with some taller grass way in the rough, which is about upper shin on the back nine and ankle high on the front. I've seen pictures where there is knee high grass everywhere, but they seem to have picked it up. There are benches on most holes and trashcans along the course. Bathrooms and water available after the front nine and after 15. Tee signs present on every hole with a map and hole information. 10/10

The obstacles are used very well at this course, and some are pretty unique. There are some hedges used on the third and fourth holes with small openings to throw through. The eighth hole has a pretty large tree with the hole tucked immediately behind it. 10/10

Great variety of openness on shots. In general, the front nine is fairly open while the back is more wooded, but the front still has some holes and shots with more obstacles (approach on 2 and 8, drive on 5, hedge shots on 3 and 4) and the back nine has some more open shots (10 and 11, approach on 15, drive on 16 and 18). Great mix 10/10

There's a nice variety of distances on holes. It seems like they always have one of the nines in the long spots and one in the short spots because in the two times I've played, once mostly every hole on the front nine was in the back position and the back nine was mostly in the front position, and the other time was the opposite. That's why I called the review "two courses in one", because it's like a different course depending on which nine is in the long spot. No matter which way it is, there is lots of variety in distance with some birdieable holes and some that are tough to par. 8/10

Navigation between holes is pretty easy and intuitive. There's one spot after the fifth hole where two tees are visible, but if you just follow the mowing path you'll be fine. 8/10

Water fountains and restrooms present, no benches on the tees, but there's a shelter with benches where the water is that's good for a rest that three holes come back to (9, 11, and 15). Comfort during round: 7/10

There's not a ton of elevation present, but it's used pretty well and there's a nice variety of slopes throughout the course. Most of the hills are rolling so there isn't much severe elevation except for 10, 12 and 14, but the variety helps give every hole a different feel. 7/10

Navigation on the holes themselves is pretty good. There are tee signs on every hole with a map giving distance to both hole positions. A few holes (4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) can't be seen from the tee, so it makes it a little tricky because you can't tell which spot it's in from the tee. 7/10

The course does a good job of forcing the player to make decisions on the front nine. The first three holes all of multiple throwing lanes to go through, and the hedge shots are good for this too. 6/10

Discs aren't too hard to find, hedge shots and other blind shots can be a little tough because you can't actually see the discs land, but as long as it's mowed like it's not too bad. 6/10

Cons:

No hole has more than one alternate hole position, most do have one at least. On the front nine, the different hole positions don't really change the feel of the holes at all, it just makes them one shot longer and increases the par by one. 3/10

This course is probably too difficult for beginners, but too easy for advanced players. It's great for recreational and intermediate players but overall doesn't do a good job challenging all levels. Multiple tees on at least some holes could really help with this. 3/10

The course doesn't have very many holes which require a certain shape on some shots. The hedge shots do a great job with this, and so do some of the more wooded holes 5/10

I'm not a fan of the blind shots just because you can't always see where your disc is going or see it if you make the incredible hole out.

Other Thoughts:

Overall difficulty: 7/10

I like the mix of par 3's and par 4's, sort of reminded me of Wyandotte County Park. I still wish more courses would do this.

I really like the use of hedges with a few openings to throw through, I'd never seen anything like that before.

Great Beginner Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A great course for beginners and has some challenges for intermediate players. Most of the first 9 holes are out in the open with a few trees. Holes 4 has a wicked hill to through up with a wall of bushes separating you from the basket. The Hole 10 is a great 500 footer. Holes 11 - 18 are wooded and provide some good challenges at the end of the game.

Cons:

Thorny Locust Trees everywhere!! What were they thinking. They are all young saplings that were just planted. Wear some thick shoes (I wear hiking boots when I play there) otherwise you might get a nice thorn in you foot.

Other Thoughts:

The restrooms are a nice touch. Also since there is no water (lakes) it is a really good beginner course. You don't have to worry about losing a disc. (Except on hole 3 where the road is close. You might nail a car, but you'll get the disc back)

First time playing Legacy... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well designed course. Layed out in such a way that finding the next tee pad was not challenging. Benches at each hole. Course fairway was well groomed. Challenging play for me (a beginner) as well as boyfriend (tournament player)

Cons:

Little shade available for first13 holes.
Thorny trees on the back 9 holes.. Be Careful!!
Some of the rough was a little too rough. Keep an eye on your disc or get a spotter for some of the holes.

Other Thoughts:

First time playing this course. Not sure why more don't play here.

After playing the long, in the sun, wide open front 9 you end up back at the parking lot where there are bathrooms, water fountains and a pavilion to sit under while you cool off a bit. After you finish up at 18 you are just a short walk away from the parking lot

A little bit raw, but breaking in nicely 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Well maintained multiple skill level course. Both beginner and advanced players will find enjoyable aspects here. Multiple pins with a lot of varying distance. Many of the short positions are half of their long counterparts making this one of the most distance adaptable courses in the area. Pins were set in a mixed configuration giving a nice mix of ace runs and long bombs. Good, albeit not great balance of open and wooded. Logical flow and spacious tee boxes. Bathrooms on site. Not overly crowded.

Cons:

It's a very new course and a very new park, and has that raw, unseasoned feel to it. This is most apparent on the mostly wide open Front 9 (and I mean WIDE open as the pictures will illustrate). A few of the holes, especially to some of the short positions can be kind of bland (things improve after hole 11). Unless you land in a thicket, a bad drive here can often be forgiven. I love the woodsier section, but I hate getting it all at once near the end. Thistles everywhere.

Other Thoughts:

Legacy is kind of like the Prairie Center of the east side. With this course and the nearby Pleasant Hill (Lake Shore) course opening in the last couple years, and with a course soon to be opening in Blue Springs, the east suburbs are starting to get some long needed courses. Legacy just needs some time to ripen into what I think will be an area favorite. The trees need some time to grow, and when they do the rating will improve. A bit of a drive from the more well known courses towards the center of the metro, but worth it. An excellent addition to KC disc golf. I'll be back.

When a Coin Lands on the Edge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has got 2 sides of life. The front 12 is long and wide open while the last 8 is a walk through the woods. You can get your arm warmed up on the opening holes and then get ready to get some touch on that plastic. The wooded holes were great. There is even a little creek running through part of it and they made good use of the slight elevation that was here. The variety of hole lengths was a good mix. The park is very well maintained. The grounds crew was out there working even in the rain. The tee signs have great information and bag holders. The course has cement tee pads with seating at each hole. There were trashcans everywhere and there is a bathroom on site.

Cons:

The wide-open holes are almost all straight shots with almost no obstacles. That did get a bit tedious. I wish the tee pads were just a bit longer in length. This place can also get some standing water and fairly muddy after a big rain.

Other Thoughts:

The Fun Factor here is split for me. The front holes were getting old, but the last 8 were such fun that it is tough to beat this place down too much. The park is so well kept that you have to love playing here. I do think this is worth a drive out here if you want to play an above average course.
