Clean and well maintained park.

Wasn't busy, maybe just be time of year, but it played really quick.

Nice layout for the area it is in. (#5 is pretty cool).

Small; not extremely challenging.

Could have issues with others using the park (i didn't). Crosses pathways.

#6 is confusing, I played #6 to the wrong basket (#9). There are instructions on how to find #6, but the first visible basket could confuse you too.

Small local course. It's great that it's there. I wouldn't complain. I'm glad I had a small place to jump in and play on a trip.

It has nine tee pads and nine baskets so you can play disc golf.
The goal is to use this course as a test run to get a nice, real course in Leland which is a good thing.

Even for a nine hole course, it lacks variety. Hole one is basically a 120' putter lay up. Hole 5 is just quite silly. There are three 300' seemingly identical holes with a max of a 10' high ceiling. If you can throw 300' and never be more than 6' off the ground then you'll have fun with it. Good luck otherwise.
There is a frequently used greenway around the course and those users are perhaps in danger and definitely don't understand disc golf.

I just don't like it.

Leland Municipal Disc Golf Course sits in a small park in the suburbs . The parking lot is small . The first tee is close to the far end of the lot .
The Equipment - There is a cement tee pad on hole #1 & 6 , and the rest have toe boards with a sand base . The tee signs are good and informative . The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers .
The Landscape - Leland Municipal is kind of a smallish strip of land . The course plays pretty flat . You have to throw up onto a small ridge at #2 , and there actually is a woods hole ( #5 ) that slopes down . Other than 5 , the course is completely park-style . There are some trees to contend with . The park is pretty open . The course was mowed and trees trimmed when I was here . This is a very clean course .
The Appearance/Atmosphere - The park sits in a nice neighborhood and is well presented . Nothing stands out beauty-wise , but there are also no eyesores to see . The cleanliness makes it appealing . I wasn't feeling any vibe playing here . Not seeing anyone play didn't surprise me , since I was here on a late morning on a Friday . Still , you can feel like a course owner by playing here versus crowded Castle Hayne Park up the road .
There were no Hole Highlights here . The holes ranged from 111' to 327' , with the average length being about 227' . #7 had a double mando for a left to right 185' hole .
Disc Risk - Very low . Other than maybe sticking your disc in a tree Which there aren't that many in play , . I can't see you losing one here .
The Time - It took me 25 minutes to play the course . A foursome will get through in 45-50 minutes.
It's a flat fast play with grass and sand bases to make it easy on the legs .

#1 Safety - The course is in the open and will be windy at times . The casual or newbie will be the primary player here , which means to be aware when playing the course .
#2 Navigation - I had to backtrack to play #8 because I didn't know you had to go straight & left from #7 basket to go to #8 tee . Also , You have to take a hard right from #4 basket to get to the woods tee for #5 . A simple piece of electrical tape on one of the bottom rungs of the baskets could help with finding the next pad .
#3 Challenge . The course is full of deuces and ace runs for most . Great for casuals and families , but since there are no doglegs , elevation , distance , water , etc. this is going to be boring for the more experienced player .
#4 Equipment - I can let the lack of putting basket and kiosk go , but c'mon . Toe boards for 7 holes ?!?!
The Finish - The #9 hole leaves you right in the middle of this small park instead of closer to the lot . Unusual , at least. .

I heard that the Leland Parks board is committed to keeping and improving this course . Maybe they didn't pour any more pads until they know that those hole placements are permanent . They have a Future Map of what the park might look like after renovations to it are done .It is what it is , a small park course to be enjoyed by the city and area . A good course to learn on and get rounds and practice under you before you tackle something like Castle Hayne . It must be a more popular course than I am giving credit if it has its own Open and attracted over 70 players , like the previous reviewer wrote .If there is that much interest in disc golf locally , might I suggest maybe some solar lights and glow discs . This might be a good spot for some night golf , even a Halloween tournament .
My Recommendation - Good for intro and newbie players , great for that hometown date , or family after-dinner play . Locals can work on their game here . Unless building safari holes , intermediates on up will just have to add to their ace total or see how far under par they can go . This will be a light practice for them . It's a quick play for the traveler since it is right off of the 140 belt around Wilmington and it is easy on the legs .This creates another alternative for vacationers . Course Collectors can pick this easy one up before heading down into Wilmington for more courses .
Don't make any special trip to come here , but it is a nice area and the park patrons were friendly . It's up to you .

-You can throw a variety of shots, including rollers which is not too common in the area
-Beautiful, clean and safe Park for the whole family
-Innova Discatcher Pro baskets and good signage
-Close to downtown Wilmington and area beaches

-Natural tee pads on 7 of the 9 holes are pretty rough to throw from but I've gotten the word that paver stone tee pads to match the ones like hole one and six will be installed before Oct. 31, 2020
-Needs kiosk with course map and calendar for events
-When big events are held at the park it can be a bit too crowded to play some holes, but that isn't a daily issue

Home of the Leland Open. A layout of 18 holes that use the existing holes and temporary holes that use the town hall complex property. Fun challenging holes and a great tournament to play. The first year had 38 players and this years tournament filled up to 72 players of all skill levels in a short time. Sponsored by Innova Discs. If you get a chance to play it, do it. Usually is scheduled for September but got pushed this year due to Covid.

Good baskets and really nice tee signs.
Short, easy to follow course around small town park.
Mature trees for shot shaping and only one hole in the woods.
Not much chance of losing a disc, except on #5.

Tees were marked, but some were uneven. Not a big deal since most of the holes were pretty short.
Several holes play near walking path, could be dangerous.
First few holes are near high use areas of the park. Unplayable during events.

Really nice, small town park, short course, perfect for families and beginners. The Wilmington area really doesn't have a course like this, so it is a good addition.
All of the holes easy to see and mostly straight.
Most of the trees in the park are large, old growth with no underbrush around them. So they are large enough for shot shaping, but have no underbrush.
#5 does represent the only wooded hole with underbrush. Its a short downhiller, into a small ravine, nice change of pace midway through your round.
#2 was a fun hole, basket sits on a little rise, next to a guardian tree on some sandy ground. Then, #3 sits next to a little depression (dry when I was there) that would make the hole interesting if you play it as OB.
#6-9 are all pretty much the same hole, with a good amount of open space to throw your drives, you just have to shape them around the large trees.
Not too many people in the park the early morning I was there, so I got in some driving practice when I was done, throwing off the band stage right in the middle of the park. As I said above, if there is an event going on, several of the holes will be unplayable.
Overall, I nice little city park course, for the families and beginners to have fun with the game.

-Tranquil park with some mature shade trees make for a nice disc golf experience.
-Good use of available space. Well maintained park.
-Occasional live music on-site, although this can interrupt holes 1-3.
-Easy to follow once you've been around a couple times.

-Needs permanent tee-pads.
-Needs better signage.
-Holes 1-3 can be unplayable due to cars and park-goers.
-Short course, not much of a challenge for the advanced golfer.

This course was installed by a gentlemen very passionate about the sport. I have no doubt he will continue to make good improvements. Nice to have another course close to Wilmington.

Leland Municipal Park has a fun new 9-hole course that plays in a park-style tract of land encircled by a paved walking path. (As always, watch for and yield to pedestrians!)

+ Pretty, well-maintained park

+ Good baskets

+ Tee signs and easy navigation

+ Good use of topography and guardian trees around many of the baskets. While a very short course -- with maybe 2 holes requiring anything other than a putter for most golfers -- the holes are laid out nicely and mix the types of lines you'll need to throw. Low ceilings on the back 4-5 holes due to trees. Accuracy is rewarded.

+ Ace runs! If you have the time and if the park's not too busy, you can have plenty of opportunities to bag an ace here. Hole 1 is especially prime (about 150 feet and wide open).

While a fun little 9-hole track, it's definitely designed with the beginner in mind. Intermediate to advanced players won't find it very challenging.

- Very short, not especially challenging

- This is a busy municipal park. I played on a day when there was a concert and food trucks. Tons of people were sitting in the lawn area waiting for the show. I had to basically skip holes 2 and 3 for safety concerns and proximity to other park-goers. Also, there's a walking track encircling holes 4-9. You have to be aware and yield to pedestrians before throwing. I don't know how busy it usually is, but I would have some safety concerns trying to squeeze in these 9 holes here.

- Hole 3 is just an odd hole. It's extremely short (like 150 feet) with trees everywhere. I saw no discernible fairway or line to the basket. It's basically like a practice upshot/scramble situation.

- The tees are somewhat makeshift. They may be planning to install better tees if/when it's clear a DG track can work here alongside the other park amenities.

This is now the closest course to downtown Wilmington (slightly closer than Arrowhead). It's worth your time to play it, but it is what it is: a beginner-friendly course to introduce people to the game. If you have the time and you're a more experienced player, Kure Beach or Castle Hayne are better plays.
