Basically a perfect natural beauty 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-beautiful park! (I'll upload some pictures at a later date. timg's are great but this course was much greener--with tighter lines to hit--than those pictures show)
-impeccable course "hygiene" w/ fairways and golf lines in good shape
-concrete tees, decent custom signs, good course flow overall with some arrows and such
-hole 17 is as much of a signature hole as I've ever played
-port-a-potty near parking area

Favorite holes: 1, 5, 8-15, 17!

Cons:

-at least two of the first 4 holes feel like "filler," maybe because you know the best is still ahead
-I'm 80% certain I got some chiggers and poison ivy here (it was a long day of disc golf, so it could have been somewhere else)
-navigation isn't perfect, especially finding tees for 10 and 11
-one set of tees (fine by me)

Other Thoughts:

This is the kind of no-frills "au naturale" disc golf that I've come to love and even prefer. At the same time, the lines aren't exceedingly raw or undeveloped. Lester Lorch is a beautiful nature preserve with a nice mix of terrain: denser woods plus more open fields with large trees, as well as some decent ups and downs. It lacks some features that seem ubiquitous at most great courses, such as multiple tees or fancy signs, but it makes up for that with multiple (and challenging) pin placements. More importantly, it manages not to sacrifice the park's natural beauty while offering a great disc golf experience. Instead of hacking away to carve a course out of this property, it feels like the designers simply followed the park's features in creating two courses full of unique and interesting holes while leaving the inherent beauty intact.

When we played here, all the holes on Coyote and Beaver were in long positions. I tend to view that kind of challenge as a positive. The holes also struck me as very fair and consistently fun. On Beaver, hole 1 starts off a pretty nice long 480' with mature trees in the fairway. Holes 2-4 were somewhat underwhelming, but the course started to pick up quickly from there. 5 was memorable for its green. 8 was a nice shot over/around the pond. 9-13 were a very nice collection of tighter woods shots (some of which were still quite long) with challenging but manageable lines to hit. I'm surprised most of the reviews have not mentioned hole 17, and that makes me think it's been recently improved upon. As it was when we played, this was one of the most interesting and memorable holes I've played recently (and we played Selah/Trey/Harry Myers earlier in the same trip). The basket was placed in an elevated position across the park's beautiful pond, and the tree canopy had a nice opening to tempt some risky but fun lines over the water. As I had already lost plenty of plastic on the trip, I played a cautious shot to a lay up zone and had a relatively simple uphill approach for par. But shots to that kind of basket placement are the stuff disc golf dreams are made of.

I made it to Lester Lorch while in the DFW area after visiting Selah and Trey Ranch. It was hot and humid and we had already played two difficult rounds in Rockwall/Fate, so exhaustion was definitely an issue. My only regret is that I played Coyote and Beaver but once, and neither course got my A-game like they deserved.

Rating discussion: I was between 4.0 and 4.5 on this one, and would give it a 4.25 if that were an option. Nevertheless, both courses at Lester Lorch were in perfect condition when we played, and we had a great time, so I'll go with the more generous 4.5. The whole course (minus holes 2-4) was quite memorable, and 17 was a blast. It's definitely worth going out of the way for this one.

***As always, please let me know if you have feedback or suggestions on how to improve my reviews!***

Open Twin Course-Homer 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great variety of trees, elevation and a little water. Concrete tee pads. Two other courses next to it. Well maintained. Challenging. Not very much of a chance to lose a disc.

Cons:

Heard of snakes but never seen one. Thorny vines in rough areas. Some vandalism.

Other Thoughts:

Yes this is one of my home courses. This course has just about everything. You will use every shot on this course. There is uphill, downhill, short, long, over water, old growth open areas. Tighter tunnels turning in different directions.
Bring a bag with variety because you will use everything you got to play this course as well as you can. Best in DFW with its sister course.

Lived up to expectations! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great use of terrain and water.

-Not much non-DG traffic out there.

-Nice signage.

-There is a portapotty!

-Beautiful mature trees and secluded location make this a wildlife haven.

Cons:

-Poison ivy and thorns.

-Hole 9 is unrealistic as par 3 if in the long position- you literally have to have 2 perfect throws to hit it in 3.

-Apparently "MELK" was here.

-Grass could use some cutting.

Other Thoughts:

-Lots of people commented on the tee pads being too short. I found that the holes that have short pads were short holes (do you really need a giant run up to throw 200ft?)

-This pair of courses is the best I've been to in DFW.

Pros:

Excellent Course
Each hole is different than the one before it.
I really liked how some of the holes would start off in the trees then open up, or vice-versa.
Lots of shade for those hot Texas days

Cons:

Briars and thorns in the brush, supposedly snakes (we didn't see any).
Just keep your disc in the fairway and none of these are problems.

Other Thoughts:

Great course, we drove from northern Dallas down to play it and it was well worth it. Even if you don't play the second course on site, its still worth the drive.

Lea/e it to Bea/er 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 18, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Excellent layout on this di/erse property. Water comes into play, some tighter technical holes, some ele/ation change, some longer more open holes,a nd some longer parklike holes too . . . all in all a nice di/ersity of hole types.

2) Turf is in pretty decent shape on this course e/en in the woods. It almost seems like whoe/er did the design/install of those wooded holes knew to use a special type of grass seed because it was healthy under what I would think is /ery minimal sunlight and growing turf in the woods is no easy task . . . trust me I ha/e been doing it my whole life.

3) Shade is pre/alent on this course and the other course which I am sure is welcomed in season. I played it in winter and it was pleasant!

4)Concrete tees are nice.

5) Tee signs on both courses are helpful in na/igation and they ha/e all the information needed. Hole # Par, Distance, and a hole map with OB's indicated. A welcome site for a tra/elling disc golfer.

6) Garbage cans all o/er the place which is nice to see . . . if only e/eryone used them!

7) Chainstar baskets in great condition. I lo/e these baskets!!!

8)

Cons:

1) Lots of areas on the course would be slick and muddy after a rain, but the turf is in pretty good condition on most areas of this course.

2) Small parking area lot but it is only for disc golfers since that is all this park has to offer.

3) Snake Preser/e seriously . . . I wish I knew that when I played it. Seems like a risk to play when the snakes are acti/e but I suppose when I was there in January they weren't really acti/e.

4)

Other Thoughts:

It sounds like I missed out on a lot of the complaints about this course because of the time of year I was there. Another perk to be a tra/elling disc golfer like myself . . . plus I didn't ha/e to deal with the 100 degree temperatures.

A great course, a great design, great /ariety, and 36 holes on site . . . what more could we ask for . . .other than bathrooms and a bar and grill with air conditioning, but that is just not going to happen.

This is on the low end of the 4.5 and the high end of the 4.0 rating, but I feel like a 4.0 rating is a disser/ice to such a fun course.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 19, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wide variety of hole types. The longest fairways on the front nine will try to deceive you, as the back nine gets tree heavy and approaches become increasingly more difficult. Overall, I really like Beaver. The course sits in a very secluded deep and woody park which makes for beautiful scenery. The hole types and design of the course is one of the best in the state. Lots of trash cans. Great cement teepads. Three water hazard holes. Great use of terrain. Porta-John in the parking lot is always clean.

Cons:

Limited parking. The back nine can get a bit wet if it's rained recently, watch out for briars and poison ivy, but that's pretty typical for most courses in the area.

Other Thoughts:

Well worth the drive. Sort of centrally located for all DFW disc golfers. A must play if it's on you wish list and if it's not then you better put it on there, cause you're missing out.

DFW's best 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Cement tee pads on every hole.

Tee Signs on every hole.

Great use of the varied land. 3 shots over the edges of the pond. (my disc landed on the Beaver Dam today)

the open holes have some length to air it out.

Has a few good tunnel shots thrown in.

Benches/picnic tables on several of the back up holes.

Cons:

It was dry today, but hole 5 can be VERY muddy in the spring.

Tee pads need to be cleaned off on a few holes. I think it was 13 that was totally covered by dirt.

Poison Ivy

Other Thoughts:

When ever I play Cedar Hill, I play both courses back to back. (Beaver 1 - 16, Coyote 2-1, Beaver 17-18)

This is why I call it DFW's best, when both courses are taken into consideration, it is THE place to play in the DFW area.

Out of the 2, the Beaver may be the better course. however I tend to shoot better on it than the Coyote.

I always enjoy listening to the birds as I play. Other than someone mowing there yard today, It was very quiet.

-Signage is good
-Shot variety (skill shot and drive accuracy work-out)
-Terrain variety and elevations changes.
-Scenic course
-Pretty clean course. (Let's keep the permanent markers off the course people)
-Great course layout. Even with no map, you can find your way around.
-Has really decent, top-of-the line hole length and hole variety.

Cons:

-Muddy when wet!!!
-Large pond presents a "lost disc" water hazard

Other Thoughts:

This is only one half of 36 hole's course out in Cedar Hill... it's a must visit. Worth your time...without a doubt in my mind. If you love disc golf -- well let's just say that Cedar Hill's 36 hole's is the best in the DFW area.

Cool Tip: Hole 8 has a secret tee box that shoots from across the pond, on top of the cliff edge. To get to it, go to hole 17's pin and follow the trail up hill until you get to a picnic table.

Better Half 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 17, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of open shots early on, I enjoyed this course better than the other half. Hole 8 crosses the water, good pin placement, Hole 9 crosses a swampy area, had me remembering that warning sign. Course has benches, picnic tables, trash cans. Actually the trash cans make it easy to navigate, just look for the big blue trash cans, they're right by the tee boxes in most cases. If you get tired, the front nine is circles the parking lot, so take a rest, grab another Gatorade, it's kinda nice.

Cons:

Ok so it's easier to be negative than positive, but this course irritated me several times. Holes 12 and 13 are just very short, very wooded, and uphill shots. It almost feels like they ran out of space, and just put some pins in. The trees on these two are a little ridiculous. Also, this course has some of the shortest tee boxes I've ever seen, no way to get a run up.

Other Thoughts:

Ok, I'll post this photo when I get back home, the course starts with this "caution, this is a venomous snake nature preserve." Who builds a disc golf course on a snake preserve? I preferred this course to the Coyote, but the guy i played with liked this one better.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

There is a kiosk at hole #1 where you will find full page maps of both courses.

The variety on this course is excellent from open bomber holes to what some might call a pinball hole (#12) and everything in between. #13 is a fishhook requiring a full 180 degree curve to get to the basket, which is elevated. There are a couple of throws over the corner of a pond but most folks will have no problem clearing the water.

The fairways are just beautiful having almost a ball golf course type feel with short grass and large trees. Each fairway is defined by walls of dense native forest. In other words: keep it on the fairway or it will cost you.

The fun factor is very high on this course due to a combination of scenic beauty, shot variety, and medium difficulty level. I can't wait to go back and play it again.

Cons:

It takes a perfect (lucky) shot to get through the trees on the #12 fairway (although my wife almost had her first ace on that hole). If the one almost dead, small tree were removed there would be a pretty fair line to the basket.

The signs are faded and the writing is so small you have to get pretty close to see the distances. This is really minor considering most courses don't even have signs.

A couple of the teepads are too short for folks that have a large x-step.

If you get off of the mowed fairways you will encounter poison ivy. This is minor considerring this is a nature preserve.

Other Thoughts:

We did see a snake laying right in the middle of a mowed fairway. We just gave it some time and it slithered away.

WOW,what a great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great layout with a great variety of holes.

Starts out with a long and hard hole with many options.

Hole 5 is a great wooded hole with open field 200 feet out.

Hole 6 is a fun Hyzer hole with many a tree waiting to knock your disc down.

Hole 8 is a great riskreward hole daring you to bite off as much as the pond as you dare.

hole 9 has perhaps the most beautiful tee shots in Texas.Throw through a gap in the trees over a marsh.Great hole!

Hole 16 offers an abundance of options off the tee.You can throw it down the middle and risk hyzering it into the pond, you can throw it right for an easy par or you can throw a roller as the contour of the hole suites a roller.

Hole 17 is another riskreward hole were the safe route is harder than the risky route as tree limbs force you to throw it low if you want to hit the safe line.

Cons:

The only con I can think of is some of the holes on the backside fill like filler holes. Now maybe that's because of the outstanding quality of the frontside.

The 18th hole is a little undramatic for a course of this stature.

Other Thoughts:

This definitely belongs on the "courses you most play in Texas"list. It's my third fav course behind z-boaz and beaver ranch, good company if you ask me.

Pros:

The Beaver is a great mostly open course that shares the same parkinglot with its sister course, the coyote....adequate parking, port-a-john in parking lot, benches on several holes with plenty of trashcans as well....A+ for maintanance...Plenty of Variety with long, short, open, and technical holes, water even comes into play on two holes....i would say this is a lot more lh friendly than coyote....Several ace runs to amp up the "fun factor" and several longer and technical holes to keep it challenging....i would def have to say the beaver is more begginer friendly, but neither one are easy....

**Info Kiosk in parking lot with scorecards and maps.

Cons:

No complaints except for a couple short teepads but had plenty of room behind most that its not too much trouble.

might be a little hard to navigate for first-timers, but theyve got maps at the kiosk

Other Thoughts:

This course is awesome!! good CLEAN park, and always a challenge, tucked far away from the regular hustle and bustle of dfw....I would rate it a 5 but i havnt played very many courses and im sure theres some that are better out there, but this is definitely one of the better ones in my opinion

Talked to a local while i was there and MINI @ 3:00 on SATURDAYS switches out between beaver and coyote every week.

Beaver DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The fun factor is off the charts. Holes of all types: wooded, water hazards, open, dog-legs, climbing, downhill shots...you name beaver has it. It gets pretty technical, but provides a good mixture so you don't piss yourself off on every hole. Multiple pin placements on most holes.
This was the most beautiful park I have visited.
Great signs and tee pads, plus there was a porta-potty in the parking lot.
The park was extremely clean, and there were trash cans everywhere. Places to sit were all along the course.
Very friendly locals. There was never any down time; we let a 2 man group play through us, but after that, no problems with traffic for the round.

Cons:

The only cons I can come up with are a few tees were a little short, which wasn't even a problem, and the pond is misleading...I took one step in to fetch a disc 3 feet from the shore, and I sank in mud up to my knee.

Other Thoughts:

Always keep the trees in mind, and you are golden. You don't even have to play to enjoy this park. If I didn't live an hour away, I would play one of the two at least once a week and probably more. I would make it a 5 disc, but I am reserving my perfect ratings until I have played more courses. That said, there is nothing like this course and its sister in the DFW area. If you are halfway decent at disc golf, you better play both of them, or you're missing out huge.

A "Must Play" in the DFW area. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 6, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The pro's on this course and is co-located sitser course Coyote are many... There are wide open shots, tight shots through wooded areas, blind shots around corners, and awesome elevation changes you don't often get in other DG courses around DFW. The signage was excellent, the Tee pads were concrete and in great shape. One of the best things I liked about this course was that there was little to no trash, thanks to the abundent trash cans on nearly every tee box... There was even a sign on the bulletin board near the #1 tee to show you what Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, and Poison Sumac looked like.

Cons:

The only con I could even think of for this course was the density of some of the under brush especially on some of the tight holes through the woods... I played in the winter so this really wasn't a big issue, but I could see how it could be with the trees and brush fully greened up.

Other Thoughts:

A Phenomenal course, one that I will definately return to as often as possible. This course reqires the DG'er to use nearly every shot in his/her bag!!!

Fantastic Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 28, 2007 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This a very fun and challenging course. There is a great variety of holes here...a few that are somewhat open, a few that are densely wooded, several that are just wooded enought that you have to combine both power and great technical accuaracy to score well, and a few holes that incorporate elevation change. The variety offered at this course is rarely paralleled by other courses in the DFW area. The course gives you a lot of different challenges to think about throughout your round. There are quality concrete teepads. The baskets are in great shape. The fairways are well maintained. The course is very pretty and could be enjoyed by just hiking around. Holes that stand out in my mind as being particularly great are holes 1 and 17. Hole one is a long uphill shot through a reasonable smattering of trees that requires a well placed long drive. Hole 17 is a really fun shot across the pond to a basket that is up a hill behind the pond and guarded by trees all around it...a rare treat.

Cons:

There aren't really any cons that I can think of. The only reason that I don't mark this course as a 5 is that I think that there are better courses out there from what I've read on the rest of this site. Still, one of the best that I've ever played.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very fun and very challenging course to play. It is over an hour away for me to get to, but well worth it when I do make the trip. I'm jealous of the players that live nearby and get to play it all the time. Someone needs to replace the Texas flag that used to be at the top of the tree on hole 14.

Best in the DFW 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Both of the courses at Lorch Park are top-notch in my book, but the Beaver (front) course offers a little more variety than the Coyote (back) course. The park itself isn't too far from the Cedar Hill commercial district, but is far enough removed that it feels very secluded. The best part about Lorch Park...DISC GOLF ONLY (and an occasional fisherman)!

Hole 1 on the Beaver tees off near the parking lot, and is one of the toughest (if not THE toughest) par 3 holes on the course. The next 4-5 holes are slightly technical and bring some elevation changes into play, but are short enough that a well-placed 300-375 drive can yield a birdie 2. As you walk over the ridge past Hole 7 you're welcomed by a beautiful man-made pond with a large beaver dam in the middle (hence the name). Holes 8, 9, and 17 bring this pond and the adjoining creek into play. Holes 10-13 are tight wooded shots, one straight, one to the left, one to the right...great mix! Hole 14 is simple shot, but is one of my personal favorites due to the TX flag flying from the tip of a large evergreen in the middle of the fairway. The course finishes with an over-the-pond shot and then a pretty straight-forward easy 3 hyzer shot.

All in all, Beaver offers a lot of scenic beauty coupled with a good mix of difficulty and different types of shots. Although most of the course is open, the tougher holes can be VERY tough and evens things out through the course of 18 holes. I love the fact that even though the course plays fairly challenging as a whole, there are still plenty of chances for birdies to keep it interesting.

Each hole has a concrete tee pad, nice signage, and several have large trashcans and park benches (donated by locals). There are also several holes with alternate pin placement that get changed a few times a year. Last time I was there, the city left 2 permanent port-o-johns in the parking lot...which is something this course needed badly!

Cons:

Honestly, the only bad thing I can say about the Beaver course is that the tees for holes 5 and 6 can get pretty muddy after a rain...but that's really it!

Other Thoughts:

Lorch Park is my former home course, and even though I've played many other great courses, the 2 at Lorch Park remain my absolute favorite. Rain or shine, this course is ALWAYS fun to play!
