Big course suitable for a wide range of skills

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

With two grippy concrete tees and three permanent baskets on every hole, Lexington Manor is suitable for a very wide range of skills. Course length ranges from roughly 3,700' (Red tee to A pin) up to 9,100 feet (Blue tee to C pin). Pick your own adventure, from ace runs to big bomber holes (but see other thoughts). Nice mix of left- and right-turning drives. A few mostly-wooded holes add contrast.

This is a mostly park-style course with big old trees and mowed grass fairways through what used to be a military housing area. The houses are gone, but the "roads" (closed to traffic) now define OB on many holes and also serve as walking paths.

I played on a warm Thursday afternoon in December and the place was rocking – music in the parking lot, lots of disc golfers, dog walkers, and other park-goers. The pretty park is big enough that different activities generally did not interfere with each other.

Two 9-hole loops ending at the parking lot. Colorful and detailed hole maps at each tee, color coded red (short) and blue (long). Fairly low risk of disc loss in December, although there is bushy thorny rough in a few places that might get thick in summer.

Bright yellow Mach V baskets in the A (short) pin position were easy to spot. Gray ChainStar baskets were used in the B and C positions (but see cons). All baskets were mounted level and caught well. Practice basket between the parking lot and hole 1.

My favorite holes were the handful that were more wooded. I also enjoyed throwing to the island on the hole 15 B pin.

Cons:

This is a well-designed and well-executed course with few negatives, other than my preference for tighter fairways and more trees. Occasionally one may need to wait for pedestrians before throwing.

Gray Chainstar baskets in the B and C positions were not always easy to spot. Concrete tee pads were plenty long but a little narrow. Most pads were at ground level so it was not a problem to start the run-up off the pad if needed.

Course is mostly flat, despite minor elevation changes on a few holes.

Other Thoughts:

I started out playing the short (A) baskets because they were easiest to spot, but quickly realized that you often need to walk past the other baskets to reach the next tee. If I am walking along the fairway I would rather be tossing a disc. Consequently, for the remainder of the round I played to B or C pins to limit unnecessary walking.

Most of the park-style holes required some shot shaping, but most fairways are pretty forgiving if you miss your line. My favorites were the woods holes, but that is personal preference. People who prefer airing out drives on big, moderately wooded park-style holes will probably love playing here.

On some of the shorter holes there is not much difference between pin positions. On one hole my drive landed just outside the circle for all three baskets, lol.

Patuxent River Naval Air Station is right across the street, so you may occasionally be serenaded by military aircraft. Plenty of hotels and restaurants nearby.

I enjoyed my round, and if this course were closer to home I would play here often.
