Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Clean park
-Well manicured by the club and county
-Holes 1-9 have great concrete tee pads
-Multiple pin positions adds variety
-Signature Hole #4 is a nice water carry over a decent sized pond
-Nice use of elevation, especially for a Florida course
-Decent amount of shade for the hot summer days

Cons:

-Small course should have probably have just been 9 holes instead of 18 with secondary tees
-Back 9 tee pads are pretty rubbish (Word is new concrete tee pads are on the way!!)
-Holes 4&13 (same pin) are disc eaters, plain and simple -- play it safe
-Would be nice to have more benches throughout the course for those hot days
-Could definitely benefit from some Nex-Tee signage for the visitors
-Non-golfers can be a menace occasionally
-Mosquitos (Yes, you're in Florida, bring something with DEET)

Other Thoughts:

This was the first course I ever played and since its less than .5 mile from my house, its the one I play most frequently. Its a solid beginner course with the exception of the 2 water holes, but you can play down a hallway the first few times to keep your discs dry if you don't feel confident enough to carry the pond. The locals are all pretty friendly and helpful. The use of elevation for a Florida course is really nice and if you're in the Brandon/Tampa area you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Fun smaller course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

As mentioned in other reviews they have done a superb job with the space they had to make a fun 9 hole course. Mandos on 2 holes, one elevated basket, and a nice finishing hole using length, trees, and water on the far right. The 4th hole is the signature hole to carry the water.

Cons:

Should be just a nine hole course and instead of having the back 9 with slightly different tees, I would've made blue and red tees period. Where are the port o potty's and trash cans?

Nice Neighborhood Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 5, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is set in a very nice clean park in what appears to be a great neighborhood.

It has some nice rolling hills, a couple of ponds, well-mowed fairways, and plenty of shady mature trees for obstacles.

The tees are spectacular. They are probably the largest poured concrete tees that I have ever seen.

This course uses Gateway baskets, and they are very nice.

Most holes have 2 or more pin placements.

There are a pavilion and a few picnic tables.

The course has a high fun factor, with a good mix of short and long holes.

The course is very close to I-75, so jumping off the highway for a quick round is a breeze.

Cons:

There are a few navigation issues. The course could benefit from some next tee signs/arrows.

A couple of the holes are missing tee signs.

The baskets have #'s on them, but on some of the holes you can see multiple baskets from the tee, and have to walk down to see which is the correct basket for that hole.

Some of the holes with multiple pin placements have no way of showing what pin is in play, so more walking down the fairway is needed to tell where to throw.

The course has 18 tees, but shares only 9 baskets. It wasn't an issue when I played it, but I wonder how it would work during peak playing times. IN MY OPINION, I would prefer this course to be a 9 hole course with 2 sets of tees, instead of its current layout.

I didn't see any restrooms, but the course isn't too far from civilization.

Other Thoughts:

Even with its flaws, I consider this to be a wonderful suburban oasis course that has a lot to offer. I was wondering if there were any houses for sale around the course, and thinking what a great neighborhood this would be to retire in!

Cons:

Impressive Course on a Fun per Acre Basis 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Use of landscape, multiple pin positions

Other Thoughts:

Limona Park is a nice nine-holer with benefits. Featuring more pin positions per hole than most any course, and two sets of tees that truly switch up many of the holes, this course is all about getting the most fun out of a relatively small bit of land.

Limona Park is a small square park and the whole thing is visible from the small parking lot. On first impression, it looks like a short practice course, good for those in the neighborhood. Sink your teeth into this course, though, and it shows you the thought and care put into it by the designers and caretakers. All nine holes have good signs and one set of concrete tees. Starting with #1, each hole takes full advantage of the landscape, which features some nice little hills, big oak trees, and even a small pond. The myriad of pin placements is evident, and according to the sign in the parking lot, baskets are moved pretty frequently. Yes, it's mostly pitch and putt, but the last three holes are longish and will give the boomers something to look forward to. Finish 9 and you'll think, hey that was pretty sweet for a nine holer.

But there's nine more to go. The "back nine" plays to the same baskets, but in most cases from a different angle. You may be surprised at how often you're using a different driver to get to a basket you've already played. There's good signage for the back nine too, but the tees are stone pavers and not very long, so that's the big disadvantage vs. the front 9. The back nine has the same qualities as the front though - more open than not, good use of the relatively hilly landscape and what trees there are, and a little bit of length for the last third.

Overall I rate Limona Good, and well worth checking out if you're in the area. For a nine-holer it's very good, but the fact remains it only has nine good tees and is still pretty much so a par 3 course in a small municipal park. Still, I am impressed by the variety and options of this course, and suspect that it'll play notably different the next time I'm there.

Nice place for Niche shot practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 5, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Nice place to work on your tunnel shot. Hole #1 starts it off with a required tunnel.
• Holes are relatively short in nature and the trees add a nice bit of technical challenge.
• The course uses a very small patch of land very well giving each hole its own signature: downhill tunnel, uphill tunnel, around trees, over or around pond, elevated pin placement etc...
• Very safe feeling to the park with the police barrack on premise.
• Quick round option(30 minute 9 hole round when needed)

Cons:

• it is only 9 holes and relatively short could be a con.
• Some fairways are so close you have to hit your mark or warn others frequently.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice 9 hole course that makes use of the small patch of land it is on. Like stated in the pros, this is a great place to work on some niche shots, low tunnels, elevated baskets, water hole with a safety net right side and the quick round possibility all make this a nice place to have the option to play. I see this as a great place to be introduced to disc golf and grow with it and practice some important shots that will help your overall game. You don't need a big arm for this course but you do have to throw with some technique or you can easily be punished for it. As a out of towner, locals were helpful and friendly. There were a lot of people on the course which made it slightly concerning at time since an errant shot could find its way into someone else's path. The course is relatively safe with a few places to lose a disc (the pond, the 9th hole left side, 1st hole right side. With very little time to squeeze in a round, I was able to complete nine holes in 30 minutes even with lots of people playing the course. I'd recommend this to be a great learning/development type of course or a warm up round for a bigger course. Definitely enjoys the stop here.

Course layout by hole:
#1 - Downhill tunnel shot
#2-Uphill obstructed basket requiring a hyzer or slight fade
#3 - short hole tree obstructed basket requiring smart placement for birdie
#4 - Pond on left, short enough to reach the basket in one(in fact, a guy almost aced it while I was there)
#5 - straight away with low ceiling of trees
#6 - added bonus of the elevated basket - nice signature for this course
#7 long slightly uphill hole that requires you to throw a low but uphill shot(work on that one!)
#8 Slight downhill hyzer with Ace possibility
#9 - long flat and then uphill to basket with left side heavy brush

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 3, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pretty hilly for FL. Several pin placements for most of the holes which is nice considering there is only 9 baskets. The pond on the 13 adds variety to the course. It's only in play on 4 and 13 and there is no real way to lose a disc on 4.

Cons:

9 baskets.
Back nine tee boxes are in need of repair.
Personally not a big fan of hole 6 on the hot tub. I find it a bit chessy.

Other Thoughts:

Since moving to FLA it has become the course I play the most. It's hard enough to keep you coming back. However if you want a real challenge try Mederd park.

Great for First-timers. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very relaxed atmosphere, and a great course to play on as a first timer.
-Landscape is great. I'm a central Florida native (used to flat, sandy ground) but it was nice to see some hills for a change.
-Course marked relatively well, not too difficult to find next tee/pin. Follows a pretty logical flow.
-Great water hazard.
-Hole 2 has an AWESOME elevation change. Could play that hole all day.

Cons:

-Great water hazard. Ate one of my discs and almost another. Terrible place to try to chuck a disc near, especially if you're a noob and don't really understand the way a disc fades! (so my wife found out.)
-No public bathroom.
-Road on back of course [has higher-end houses with snobby people that think that standing in the middle of the fairway that you're trying to drive on is a good idea... even after you've pleaded with them to step aside...]

Other Thoughts:

-Great local course that we'll play again and again.

Untouched by Suburbia 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Gateway Titans are nearly indestructible and in great shape. There are clear and informative tee signs on all nine holes and both sets of tees. For Florida there is a surprising amount of elevation in such a small area and it's used to the maximum advantage. The original tee pads are huge concrete slabs in great condition. Most holes would be fine with half the current size pads. There are multiple pin positions on every hole as well as two sets of tees. There are several tree stump benches scattered through the course. Picnic tables and grills would make for a nice lunch afterward.
The large trees and hanging moss force you to shoot low and technical. One hole shoots over a small lake and one of the pin locations for hole #1 is located on a ridge with the water as a back drop. The rest of the baskets were placed very well adding to the challenge. It's very beginner friendly (I took my Aunt there for the first time and she had a blast) with friendly local players. There is a welcome board near the pavilion. The holes offer a good variety of length as well.

Cons:

It's only nine holes. If there was more land it would be very nice to see this as an eighteen hole course. Some of the secondary tees are in the middle of the previous fairway. A few of the fairways are also very close to each other. There are no maps available or next tee signs that I could find. There is minimal crossover and some tightness in holes five through seven, so watch your head for bad kicks. The welcome board is at the end of the course, not by hole one. The water is filled with algae and absolutely reeks (some fish might help clear it up). The tee pads for the back nine are small and uneven pavers, a not so welcome change from the front nine. I didn't see any bathrooms, but that doesn't mean they aren't there:)

Other Thoughts:

The moss and aged trees make for some cool scenery that can only be found in Florida.

Decent but fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 21, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The elevation changes add a lot of variety and an element not normally seen around here so good usage of that alone is a major plus. Although it's only a nine basket course the addition of alternate teepads to bring it to 18 holes is executed pretty well. Signage is pretty good showing all the basket locations and distances though the accuracy on the distances is pertty sketchy. There are a lot of fun holes and the combination of trees and canopies forces you to get your lines and height right for good drives. The tee pads on the front nine are very nice.

Cons:

Some of the holes on the back nine either lack imagination (being little more than the same hole from a longer distance or slightly different angle) and a couple are challenging due to annoying factors rather than quality design. The "pads" on the back nine are mostly terrible, short and narrow layouts of paving stones which usually have gaps between them and aren't always even. They would have been far better off leaving them as plain dirt if they weren't going to pour proper pads.

Other Thoughts:

Limona is a nice course that I enjoy playing on from time to time and is a nice change of pace due to the elevation. It's probably no better than the 7th or 8th best course in the greater Tampa Bay area though.

Valley Course with Double Tees 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Limona is a well maintained course, located in a scenic valley, with few natural hazards other than a small pond and many large trees. The public park location is open year-round to all visitors, but it is used mainly by disc golfers.

Cons:

The double tee layout is often a problem on busy days. Each basket has a tee pad for the front nine and the back nine assigned to it, possibly resulting in two players throwing at the same basket at the same time.

Other Thoughts:

When the USF disc golf course is closed, Limona is the only close-by option for many Tampa area disc golfers.

Gem of Brandon 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Elevation change (and in Florida, too!)
2) Multiple basket placement options for each hole
3) Great, large, cement tee pads for holes 1-9
4) Good signage
5) Good use of space and well placed "mandos" to prevent overlapping fairways
6) Good level of difficulty for all skill levels
7) Variety of distances, with 200' up to about 390'
8) Different tee pads are marked as 10-18, allowing you to play a full 18 holes.

Cons:

1) Port-o-let
2) Tee pads for 10-18 are too short, need to pour up some of those big wide cement ones like on 1-9.
3) Limited garbage cans throughout course
4) Could be hard to figure out multiple tee pads if you're not with a local

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course was challenging and fun. The water wasn't too intimidating, and won't come into play for most players until 13, in which case inexperienced players will lay up and/or go around the small lake, and better players will go over.
There was some trash left around the course, but in general it was very nicely kept. The elevation changes (rare in South / Central Florida courses) made for some more interesting shots, and there were still plenty of trees to map your shots and work on shaping lines around (or in my case, through...) If you're in the area, this is one that's worth playing. I enjoyed the challenges and layout of this course more than Sarasota's North Watertower Park and Clearwater's Northeast Coachman Park, which are slightly more technical courses with more trees.

Special thanks to JohnE McCray for showing me around the course and showing me how it's intended to be played. :)

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 14, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is quite a large piece of property to contain only 9 holes. It feels like the holes were very well laid out with plenty of room to work with. Some times these nine hole courses seem like they are squeezed into a property that is too small and so the planning is lacking. Not so here.

There are some really challenging shots: 2 & 9 in particular. 2 requires an extremely precise drive or roller with a palm in exactly the wrong place for an easy drive. 9 is long and uphill.

Elevation change is nice considering this is in Florida you don't see that much.

Water is in play on 4 &13 but not so much of a threat if you know how to throw straight or have a decent hyzer or sidearm shot in your bag.

Locals were very nice.

Mandos were unique sporting a goat design that is supposedly likened after the goat that is in the yard just beyond the fence on the north side of the lake.

What other courses have a "hot tub" hole. If you have been there you know what I am talking about. If you haven't been you will just have to go to find out.

Clever use of multiple tee pads to give the feel of 18 holes on a 9 pin course.

Cons:

Would be great if this was a full 18 holes, just not the room for it.

I wish the water came a little more into play, like if hole 4 had an alternate pin right down by the water or further across the lake. Not a huge con but would be fun.

Not much bad to say about this course other than it is not a full 18 holes.

Other Thoughts:

I will play this course again even though it is quite a drive. There is a group that plays there Monday around noon that sounds fun. If you are going to play a course in Tampa, play this one. If you are going to play courses in the Tampa Bay area, hit St. Pete/Clearwater first.

Nice variety for Florida 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) This course is well designed for disc golf on a cool property. There are plenty of trees, there is elevation changes both up and down, there are some open drives and some tighter wooded drives. All in all this course has just a perfect mix of trouble and challenge.

2) Gateway Titan baskets are spectacular, they alsmost catch too good if that can be true. Misses on most other baskets might still be caught by the 24 chain Titan.

3) Multiple baskets available on many of the holes including 4 baskets on Hole #1, 10.

4) Multiple tees create completely different holes, thus the tee signs labelled as 18 holes instead of short and long tees for 9 holes.

5) Tee signs are nice. Hole #, distances of all baskets, par and a moderately descriptive hole layout.

6) You can pet a goat! Who doesn't like to pet goats?

7) Mando's used appropriately for safety issues where fairways cross fairly close to another fairway, tee, or basket. It won't stop errant throws, but at least it makes you aware before you throw.

8) There are doormats placed some of the tees allowing for you to pound your feet off before stepping onto the teebox. This is key with wet sand. The teeboxes were not too slippery despite the amount of sand on them.

9) Massive concrete tees for 9 of the holes. The alternate tees are 2'x2' pavers.

10) Course is very beginner friendly. It is mostly open despite having some trees to work around. It will challenge the beginners but will help them improve quicker than a wide open high school course.

11) Pavilion, benches and kiosk for disc golf info are included along with a portopotty in the parking lot.

Cons:

1) Paver teeboxes are too small and uneven in spots. It is better than just dirt but I would prefer to see them done properly the first time.

2) All holes are very threeable without too mcuh difficulty.

3) There is a fair amount of erosion around the concrete tee boxes. The grade drops off especially at the front of the concrete tee boxes.

4) A few of the holes are too close to another hole. The mandos are there to make people aware but it does not stop the errant throws.

5) Course is pretty repetetive in distance except for hole #9. This goes along with all holes being pretty threeable.

6) Some areas the turf is pretty thin and could get muddy althought he soil is still mostly sand. There also are some tree branches and debris in a few spots that could really stand being removed.

7) I dont think there were any benches ont he course and I do not remember any garbage cans. I am sorry I played quick and alone so I had no spare time I just ran through the course. I also have played too many courses (like thats possible) in the last few weeks so things run together a little bit.

Other Thoughts:

I had a good time at this course. I played it on my way from Fort Myers to Orlando and I played both tees at the same time and I think it took me about 30 minutes. It was a quick play and easy to follow and navigate. There was plenty of challenge to allow me to enjoy the course, and a good amount of variety always helps my enjoyment of a course. I saw signs of Billy Goat Disc Golf which I assume is the local club. How creative! And if you want (and I wouldn't) pet the goat after putting out on Hole #4. The course could use some maintenance around the teeboxes and it could also use the alternate teebox installation.

Hills in Florida!!?? 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Hilly...very rare in Florida, almost felt like a GA course except for the big beautiful mossy trees.
Nice big concrete pads, it also seemed like there were some alternate rubber pads but they were not marked.
Gateway Titan baskets are ridiculously overbuilt...very heavy gage basket and 3 rings of chain (really wish the connections were better to the poles though).
Neat elevated basket on hole 5.

Cons:

Hole 6 missing sign.

Other Thoughts:

I cannot comment on the difficulty of this course because I played it with a super class disc and it was the first time I ever used one so I cannot correlate it to regular play. It seemed rather straight forward but it had good amenities for a 9 holer with concrete pads and good signs along with multiple pin placements.
It was a good and worthwhile detour if you are in the area.

Disc golf quickie! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 31, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is well designed with beautiful foliage and soft rolling hills. I found it to be easy to navigate with a nice flow from hole to hole. Very well maintained and groomed with no excessive overgrowth. A great place to introduce someone to the game as it isn't overly challenging or long. Also a great place for a quickie if you are pressed for time.

Locals were very friendly and really love this course. John E. Mccray is there often as he and his wife disigned and maintain the course. They are both very friendly and helpful.

Cons:

The course is small and not very challenging. As mentioned in most reviews, a few of the fairways overlap and back track on each other, but I don't think this can be helped. Crowds will be a problem on the weekends.

Other Thoughts:

This course, I think, was designed to be a simple fun little course to introduce the community to the sport. I almost feel bad listing "small and not very challenging" as cons because thats just what it was meant to be. It is a great course to develope your game and perfect your drive as many of the holes are aceable.

This is my girlfriend's favorite course because it is so low on the difficulty meter.

If I am in the area, and have the time, I will play this course again.

Rubber tee pads (back 9)

Not too tight

Not too wide open

Somewhat hilly

Cons:

Rubber tee pads too short and narrow

Can become overcrowded easily

Some holes run trough other holes

Hole 9 basket doubles as practice basket

Other Thoughts:

Limona isn't a bad little course. There is a small pavilian with lots of tables for group gatherings. There were numerous low canopy drives, but holes 4 and 9 were wide open with the exception of OB on the left. The hills came into play on hole 7 as you had to throw a little higher than normal. I loved the somewhat sandy ground because it allowd me to be super agressive whenever I wanted.

Most holes had trees as obstacles, but the more risky shots were very rewarding if completed successfully.

It was a fun course to play. It wasn't crowded when I got there, but more people were getting there when I left. I can only imagine how crowded it gets there.
