Soggy but solid 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 19, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Intermediate level course that would be challenging for beginners even from the amateur tees.

Baskets - 18 very grippy Innova DISCatchers. Numbers are on baskets.

Tees - 2 tees per hole. Pro tees are concrete. Amateur tees are dirt. Actual difference in difficulty level between the tees. Not just distance, angle is also altered.

Signs - 1 sign per hole located at the pro tee. Includes a map, hole numbers, par, distance, and arrow pointing to the next tee.

Variety - Holes 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, and 12 are heavily wooded with a defined fairway. They require technical shots or placement shots. Holes 1, 5, 8, 13, 14, and 18 have plenty of trees as obstacles. The remainder of the holes are in the open. Course is mostly flat but there are a few tiny hills. Distance also varies.

Very spread out park. Takes awhile to play. No real issues of overlapping fairways although some get close.

Challenging course from both sets of tees.

Wooded holes were a nice touch. Very scenic (even though you could hear the highway). Fairways are mulched.

Fairly easy to navigate (see cons).

Within 2 minutes of the highway. Food/snack options nearby.

Clean park with a few benches and trash cans in disc golf area.

Room to expand.

Cons:

Lots of poison ivy in the wooded holes. I saw poison ivy on holes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10. Be careful to avoid the rough.

Mud pits around basket of hole 2 and in fairway of 3.

When I played, tons of standing water on holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Hole 6 Pro tee was under water. When I played the course last summer it was not like that. May be seasonal. A few wooden walkways / bridges could do wonders during the soggy seasons.

Amateur tees are natural. Takes away from overall appearance.

Could hear the highway from every hole.

Could use a few more signs; Alternate tees could use signs and could use several signs pointing to the next hole, especially after hole 9.

There were trash cans and benches at the park since it is a multi use park, but there are none when you need them.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course. This course is more challenging than it appears. I have felt that way both times I've played it. It has a great design and will challenge most players.

I feel like this course could easily be improved which would take it to the next level. Both tees need to be concrete, more signs, more benches and trash cans, and possibly a few more holes. Course could use a few small wooded bridges as well. A hole could be added between 9 and 10 to help navigation. A few holes could be added between 17 and 18 if you cross the street (it would even have water hazards with the retention pond).

I would recommend this course to any intermediate player, it may be too difficult for beginners but it will make them better. Check the website before you play because if it is muddy with tons of standing water, you may not enjoy it.

Worth the drive 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a good course. The designers have done a good job of using the woods. Several shots require you to keep throws low. You have options in some places and you'll have an opportunity to use a full repertoire of shots.

This is a well-kept, clean park. Grass is nice and thick and there are seemingly miles of mulch through spots where there isn't grass to keep you from trudging through mud. It drizzled most of my round and the ground was wet from the previous day, but I didn't get muddy at all.
I don't think I've ever seen a course that has the first tee as close to the parking lot as this course does. It's like 5 or 6 feet from the car to the tee.
After playing about 6 or 7 courses in the Indianapolis area I'd put this one as my second favorite behind Hazel Landing (there are still a few I haven't played though.) It's also easily accessible from I-65 as it's not more than a mile or two from the exit.

Cons:

I didn't notice any water fountains or trash cans. I played in late October so perhaps there is water and I wasn't in enough need to find it, but I don't think there was.
As mentioned by others there could be some problem if the baseball field is in use but you should be able to avoid throwing into the outfield (maybe beginners would want to avoid it, but most players won't end up in the outfield.
While there are two distances listed on each sign there is only a teepad for the longer distance. Shorter pads are natural.
Not much you can do about this as it's the natural terrain, but everything is pretty flat.

Other Thoughts:

All distances are listed from the pro tee
#1 285'. Basket is pretty straight ahead but it's set back in an opening in the trees. You also have to stay straight and low, as there are two trees that provide a gap you have to hit about 100' or so from the pad.

#2 315' You walk back out of the woods to the teepad, but then throw right back into them. The basket placement will require a bit of a turnover shot, as it's a bit right of straight.

#3 285' This one is a shot through the woods. You again tee off out of the woods, but quickly hit a gap to get right back into them and there isn't a lot of room for error. Get all the way through the woods and the basket is about 50 to 75' out in the clearing.

#4 375' The road runs along the right of the fairway and it won't take too much of an errant throw to get yourself OB. There are a couple of trees directly in front of the pad along the road that can mess with your shot too. Basket sits in the open.

#5 #440 Sort of a "grip it and rip it" but you have small trees periodically along either side of the fairway that may force you to think twice about it. Trees get thicker as you approach the basket.

#6 325' Doglegs to the right. You have trees to contend with on either side as you throw out of a bit of a shaft. Small trees throughout the fairway force you to be accurate and fairly low (unless you have the arm to go super high,) and the basket is protected by low trees as well.

#7 275' Not long but narrow. Hole is mostly straight but you'll need to turn a bit to the left to get to the basket.

#8 330' Not overly long, but with the low ceiling you have it makes every bit of that 330 work against you. Some might opt for a roller here and maybe even try to get it to the left around the obvious alley.

#9 240' Keep it low again, as you're throwing into the trees. You're in a pretty good clearing but there are small trees here and there that can kill you. Again there will be a slight right to left that should work well for a skip from a regular RHBH.

#10 285' Sweeping left turn. You have to contend with a handful of thin trees that can kill you as you try to hit the fairway and you have to get far enough (but not too far) to have a look at the basket on your 2nd shot.

#11 240' Another hole that has 4 or 5 trees in the fairway that can mess you up. Not too long but the basket is well protected.

#12 275' The "light at the end of the tunnel.Throw through the gap to get out of the woods. The basket sits about 60' beyond but there is thick rough from the end of the woods past the basket along the right side. Probably would be a good flick hole for a rightie.

#13.400' Somewhat downhill (but not much of an elevation change anywhere on this course.) Must keep it low as you have to get past some fairly mature trees. Could be an issue here if people are using the horseshoe pits which are right of the fairway. There is a gravel road to the left of the fairway that is OB.

#14 320' Pretty straight and open but there is are two big trees (first one right of the tee, 2nd one left,) that you may need to "S" around. Miss those and you're totally in the clear.

#15 300" Throw from the wide open and you don't have to content with a tree for about 200'. At that point you have to choose left or right to get to the basket, as it's back behind a big tree.

#16 505' Avoid a couple of big trees and you'll be in the wide open. Don't let your 2nd shot get left, though, or you'll be on the baseball field (OB.) The basket sits atop a berm that's about 3 or 4 feet tall. There is also OB to the right of the berm.

#17 375 Narrow. You are just outside the right field fence and there is a road to your right that's OB as well. The biggest obstacle here is probably the foul pole. The best throw is going to hyzer along the same curve as the fence, as the basket sits beyond the centerfield fence.

#18 305' Couple of paths but you can get in trouble here. Road/parking lot to the right is OB but some may go high and over it to hyzer back in. You can throw straight but there's a light pole directly in front of you. Just left of that pole is the left field foul pole from the baseball field and a big tree behind it, not to mention another tree left of that one. Once you get past all that there are a few other small tress to contend with closer to the basket.

pleasantly suprised! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very nice mix of medium and shorter technical holes combined with some open longer holes.
Mostly plays through mature trees and provides shade on hot summer days.
Very nice baskets and tee pads.
Signage at tees and bulliten board were new and accurate.
Birdie oppertunities are available, but generally you need to make an acurate tee shot and most times keep it low.
Errant shots can be punished by o.b. and woods adjacent to fairways.
Easy to navigate from baskets to tees.
Fairways do not cross or play on top of each other because of the design of course. (for me this is important)

Cons:

Some of the finishing holes play near baseball fields and public areas of park, and while this was no problem when I was there I can see that a couple of holes might be tough to play if the park was busy.
One hole around 10 or 11 required walking back the fairway to get to the next tee which would be inconvinient in tourney play or if the park was busy.
The last couple longer holes were very open so not much challenge to big arms while being out of reach for smaller arms. (no consequence for errant drives of longer throwers)

Other Thoughts:

I had a great time playing this course! It was much nicer than I expected, and I will definately be back when I am back in Indiana. It is possible to score low on this course, but it would require good shotmaking and execution. All in all this course is worth a look if you are in the area.

Pros:

Location, way more technical then power, shaded, 4 seasons of play with different degrees of difficulty each season,no walkers, not crowded.

Cons:

tough course for beginners, AM boxes can be limiting for drives-need to be cemented or boxes removed (or mulched better)

Other Thoughts:

Love playing this course, just started playing again, its been 10 years. Have a few friends that play and are very good and have brought them to my home course and they really love it gives them a whole new challenge, since its more technical than power!

Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

You shoot into the woods, out of the woods then get great low ceiling, and tunnel shots. Very nice use of the wooded areas and open space. Some really tough shots inside the wooded area too, hit the first tree and you are in trouble. Also some long range shots and wide open looks for all types of players. Pro/AM tees are nice, and I believe there is also alternate placements as well....always a plus. Wasn't very crowded at all, maybe two other groups on a Sunday.

Cons:

No elevation, I saw a big hill in the park that would have been really fun to drive from, but wasn't being used. Didn't like hole 17 or 18 at all. Softball field is in play on 17 and 18. There was a softball game going on so I ended up hitting the close apartments on the right trying to avoid fading into the softball field. Disc almost ended up on someone's deck! Poor throw, but worse hole placement. Needed some help from locals finding some of the early tees.

Other Thoughts:

Great change of pace from the Indianapolis courses, really challenging course. Not too far from Indy, since it's right off the interstate. I will definitely make it back here soon, as I'm getting tired of playing the same courses and this one stands out as a unique place to play around Indianapolis. Not much else to add that hasn't been said!

Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Nice park, seemed to be taken care of very well. Disc golf section pretty much separate from the other parts, except on the back end. Could see it getting crowded by non-dger's on a bad day.
- Great mix of open holes and wooded holes, and even some in between. Some holes have you shooting fairly deeply into the woods from the open field, and others have you shooting fairly deeply from the woods into the open field.
- Tunnel shot created by mature trees a real challenge, especially with the mando. Interesting to see a tunnel shot that really wasn't in the woods, technically.
- Great mix of shots needed to score well. A little right, a little left, and a lot straight. Accuracy is a must for many of these holes, more so than distance.
- Two sets of tees is great for a newer player to hang with a more experienced one. Seemed like they were both appropriate, skill level wise (only played Pros myself).
- Baskets and tees OK

Cons:

- Signage was missing on some of the forest holes. I guess they are getting new ones, but when I was there it was not great. Getting from 6 to 7 got me turned around for a minute.
- Local kids riding around on motorized scooters around the course, mostly inside the forest. They didn't get in the way too badly, but were pretty distracting.
- Pretty much no elevation change to speak of. A basket on a small hill was about it.

Other Thoughts:

- Rough was extremely thick on some holes, especially by 6. Watch that disc if you end up too far right.
- No water at all is in play on this course, which to me doesn't really count as a con.
- For such a flat area, they made a really a good course. Great mix of forest and open holes, with a lot of trees in play on the open holes. Only a handful that didn't stand out in some way.

quality city course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 27, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Dual tees; longs recently poured concrete. Nice and long; and done well; broomed.
Tee signs using laminated paper (sounds like more permanent ones to come eventually). Short tees using elegant post. Footage of signs seemed very accurate.
Nice innova buckets.
Alt. pin placements.
Wooded holes at beginning and end. Bomber holes also available.
We felt there were good amount of benches available.
No troubles with navigation.
A number of tight and/or low ceiling lines required.

Cons:

Couple of tee signs missing.
A little less demanding than Camp Cullom; i.e. a little more of an open, city park feel; but still a very good course.
Played one short tee, due to long being very swampy. One section of course was very wet; but, in this section they had raised at least one of the tees off of ground level, in an attempt to alleviate this problem.

Other Thoughts:

Four of us playing this one on a journey. Two of the four of us, 900+ rated players....long tees...+2, best score of our group. In other words, tough, quality disc. Would I return here? Most definitely.
This is a good city course; and progress is on the upswing to making it even better, in terms of tees, signs, etc.

Nicely balanced course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great bomber holes

Winds in and out of woods

Balanced lines and shots

Nice pads

Cons:

Drainage problems

Could use more detailed signage

Not much elevation action

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun, diverse course.

You wind into, out of, and through trees of varying density the entire 18. The pins are placed well, when in the relative open, to shape lines with the random cover. There are A LOT of low ceiling shots. Some of these have substantial distance. There are a few 400+ft holes to lay into.

Many of the pins are somewhat guarded. The fairways are very fair and well defined throughout. This course hits most every distance and angle. I needed distance drivers, fairways, mids and p&a's. I used a great mix of discs off the tee's...pretty much used every disc in my bag.

I mentioned the drainage problems. Clearly, it is early Spring and the rain has been plentiful. Even still, some pins and pads were under water. I expect mud, but some areas were at least a foot deep. No big deal, just something you should consider with the weather.

You should bring a map your first time out. Its not real difficult to navigate, but I did refer to the map more than a few times.

Very nice layout 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 26, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

18 discatchers with alt. placements. Amateur and pro tees. Very nice layout, flows hole to hole well. Starts out playing into and out of woods on the first three holes. #4 long and open. #5 long and open until the last 1/3 of the hole, becomes a tough putt. A warning of things to come, going into the woods. Tight fairways, your choice of throwing into a low ceiling or high,if I remember correctly, #6,#7. #8 I'll call it the "tunnel of trees shot"...beautiful,Signature hole? For some reason that hole just hit me as peacefull. #9 takes you back into the thick woods. Technical holes for the next handfull of holes. Coming out of the woods you play around mature tees with no brush and cut grass. I believe to the right of hole 13 fairway a horseshoe pit with benches. I'm not sure if anyone plays horseshoes anymore,so no real worries about hitting anyone. Plus a nice area for a break, shade and benches. The next few holes are teeing off or throwing to mature trees with no underbrush. #16 you tee from mature trees into an open field toward the south end of the tennis courts, the basket is on a very small mound for a little upshot, good use of the land available.

Cons:

A few cons; I thought that since this course is close to the interstate that road niose would be a problem, surprisingly it's not..... It's the firing range! I think it will be a problem during tourneys? You really notice it back in the woods. It seems like your about 50 ft away from it when your on #10,11,12. #17 COULD be a problem if you go over the fence into the baseball field. No water holes or terrain changes.

Other Thoughts:

••update•• played again 4/26/10. The pro concrete tees with perm. Signs are installed. Am tees marked with short numbered posts and filled with mulch. Still needs atleast a few benches and trash cans. A resident from the apartments was letting his dogs play around #16 basket. Careful he was playing fetch with a disc, they could go for yours! He also told me about a rumor of another 18!? One or two directional signs from #9 basket to #10 tee still needed. Overall,I have to say that it's not a "destination" course like camp cullom. But, it IS a MUST play if you are in the area. Bring in clean fill dirt to have mounds for the alt. Pin placements.
