Loris Has Some Land, 18 Baskets and a Lot of Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Loris, South Carolina, population: 2,000, has a disc golf course. Great job Loris/Horry County!

It plays decent with the front nine requiring some very short technical shots, while the back nine is more open and a lot longer.

The blue DISCatcher baskets are really nice and give the course a signature feel.

Hole 18 is a fun shot.

There's a lot of potential here.

Cons:

The course doesn't make use of the park area. If you look at the course map that RussMB made under Links/Files (great job on that RussMB, we referenced it often while we were there!) you can clearly see what I'm referring to.

It could be that the unused area is reserved for a future ball field or tennis court. Either way, I feel that the front nine doesn't have to be as dinky and tight as it currently is, and that the back nine doesn't have to be as repetitive as it is.

Holes 10 and 11 share the same fairway.

The biggest con is that the playground comes into play on hole 7. This is extremely dangerous, especially for players that would insist on playing the hole when there are children in the playground. This hole needs to be moved to a safer area, otherwise I'd advise you to skip this hole if ANYONE is in the playground. I throw mainly backhand. The best way for me to reach the basket on this hole was to throw a slight anhyzer over the playground equipment. Terribly bad hole design on this one.

Other Thoughts:

Again, I'm not sure what the unused area of the park is for, but if a course designer could look at it, I'm sure a fun course could be built that would bring more players to the area, and keep them coming back.

hey its something 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

to get more course in this area, this was a welcome addition , just having more disc golf in place helps get more people interested in the sport, more voices equal more courses.

Cons:

first time you play course your quess is as good as any. course plays too close to the playground, had to chase one midget all the way to the dog park to get my disc from them

Other Thoughts:

don't want to seem to be bashing the course, i just think some work and moving around the back 9 as not to be so repetitive would help. needs directional signs and all natural teeboxes formed. mandos in some places would make course more competitive.
also somebody please put the baskets together right, center pipe runs through the ring in chains

Loris has disc golf! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Hard to believe this is out here! 18 holes that start off decently. Plenty of walking to be found, but that may not be a pro at the start if you don't know where the next hole is. Most holes are marked well, and all the baskets are new.

Nice little water hole for 18. Don't overshoot it though, the woods are thick right behind the basket!

Cons:

- Hole 1 is not marked well (maybe not at all?), but the basket is easily visible when you arrive.
- Hole 5 has had some damage, and the marker was lying in the woods. Not sure where that should start.
- After hole 9 the course follows a service road and all shots are straight and fairly long (except 15). Challenge seems to come only from having to throw for distance, but that's not too bad.
- Hole 17 and 18 are weirdly out of place. 16 dumps you out at the end of a service road, so you need to follow the pavement back towards the park. Watch across the road and when the woods break and you can see the school you should cross the road, and you'll find marker 17. Extremely long throw back along the woods.
- 18 isn't too far past 17, but you might go down the wrong path. Don't take the "nature trail" right next to basket 17, go a bit farther up the road and follow the path that goes along the water.

Other Thoughts:

Really hard to complain about this course. There's nothing for miles, so I'm just glad it exists. If there's any work planned to be done (signage, tees, etc?) I'd be happy to help.

If anyone wants to play during the week after 5 shoot me an email, I work pretty close to the park.
