Well done woods course

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 3, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course Infrastructure -

There are beautifully made and un vandalized tee signs here that show you in great detail the fairway and basket, give distance, par for the holes and tell you which hole you are one and what the hole is called. It's in English and also the local Native Choctaw language. Apparently the Choctaw word for buffalo is "Yanash".

There are two sets of tee pads, they are called the long and short pads and are true to their name but not only do the pads change distance but many of them change the slant of the hole which is very exciting. A shot from the long pad may also come with a more straight or hyzer or anhyzer finish to the hole compared to the shorter pads.

There are very nicely next tee signs made in the same sort of style as the tee signs at the beginning of each hole. They tell you where to go but also give you the direct of the short and long pads making it almost impossible to get lost out here and after the first couple of holes I put my phone down knowing I didn't have to use that phone app.

- Front 9 vs. the back 9 -

The front starts you out around the lake and the first hole is a basket on a flat spot that slopes toward the green so knowing how and where to land is key. There is lots of rolling hills that touch the lake and plenty of fairways throw over this section. It goes kind like this for a while; lake hole, wooded hole, lake hole, wooded hole, etc. until you reach hole 9 which is the last of the lake holes and then you head off into the trees where the back is a tightly wooded, slightly shorter course than the front with many tight lines. In the front nine you need well placed drives to avoid going OB in the water combined with short accuracy shots in the wooded section. In the back nine you need all sorts of trick shots, accuracy, a FH, and good upshots/recovery from out of the rough which does a really job of punishing those back drives and turns them into bogeys.

- Aesthetically pleasing -

I got out here at about dawn and there was no one around except for birds, chipmunks, and deer. I got to see the sun rise on the lake and the fog burn off and turn into a beautiful day. This is out in the middle of nowhere as far as I'm concerned and you get nothing but nature when you are there alone. The trees themselves are pretty to look at and the lake of course is sensational. I could see myself just taking a walk out here if the baskets weren't here.

Cons:

There were a few par 4 holes and a par 5 from the long tees and only the one par 4 from the short tees that I can remember. There is room for another 18 or more holes out here so it would be nice to see some pro tee pads to take care of all of the space and add a few more par 4 holes to the course. Having a red/blue/gold layout here would be an awesome addition to the already challenging lines out here.

Finding the course isn't the easiest thing to do as Udisc take you to the entrance of the park but nowhere near the disc golf course. Like the previous reviewer said, drive down the gravel road at the end of the campground on the left and you will find a parking lot and will see baskets and know you are in the right spot. Walk to your left from the parking lot and you will see the first tee pad.

There are no open bathrooms out here in the winter time so plan accordingly. Gross I know and maybe TMI but I had to drop a deuce in the woods, glad I bring my spade and TP wherever I go. Just one of those things, when you gotta go, you gotta go. Don't worry I walked far away from the disc golf area haha!

Other Thoughts:

I loved this course, what a well done course with just about everything you could want in a disc golf experience. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're near Durant and go play the Lake Durant and the 9 holer in town too, they are all good in their own way. First course played in Oklahoma, glad it was an awesome one!

Well worth the drive

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 6, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a wonderfully laid out course whoever designed it did a remarkable job. Front and back pads on every hole. The baskets are numbered in the park is beautiful the use of the forest and the water is outstanding. The front pads and amateur and rec users will find them enjoyable. The back pads are difficult enough to give pros a challenge almost on every hole. . When you cross over the water and play on a semi Island it is wonderful and most of the course is through Tight but fair Forest. The park itself is worth going to even without disc.
New signs have been added.

Cons:

Remote to find.

Other Thoughts:

When you get to the end and you see gravel and it says no ATV you can actually drive on that part to go to the course I walked in and it added a half a mile to the start and finish.
