Will You Be Lusting After Lustig?

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

- good variety of hole lengths and shot types
- practice basket
- large concrete tees
- bathrooms by parking lot (though locked in winter months)
- reflector strips on baskets help with visibility
- basic but serviceable baskets
- respectable elevation change due to numerous hills
- good number of mature tree obstacles require some shot shaping
- ample parking
- picturesque park with cool river views
- some cool throws from high elevation
- very clean and well maintained park
- no major safety hazards
- navigation is generally clear, though a few next tee signs could help
- park benches at some holes

Cons:

- no garbage cans (pack it out course, not necessarily a con if respected)
- tee signs are pretty basic and have no maps
- decent layer of leaf debris during winter months can swallow discs
- water hazards don't factor in much despite proximity to river
- can be a bit busy

Other Thoughts:

Lustig Park is a very respectable course in a strong disc golf state. I struggled to find many real cons for this course. While it may be about a 3.25 for me, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. A bit more technical wooded lines would make it better for me, but this is somewhat subjective.

It's hard to fault the design and layout of this course. While not championship caliber, it is well maintained and clean, navigation is clear, holes are challenging and make good use of the terrain, and equipment is serviceable or better. There is good elevation change and shot shaping and it's just a fun round. I do see this being a park that could get quite busy, which isn't a bad thing really but is something I would consider a minor con.

Newer baskets might be nice here, but they catch well enough. Similarly, tee signs with maps would be an upgrade, but the other relevant information is all there. While there are some really neat views of the Rock River, the risk of losing a disc to it is very low (pro or con depending on your perspective!). After hole 13, there is a very steep dropoff down to the river; this is probably your best chance of overthrowing and losing one.

For having no garbage cans, this course looked remarkably good. It restores a bit of my faith in humanity. In addition to the dropoff on hole 13, I really liked the downhill throw on hole 12 from high elevation. This does play near the entrance road, which is probably the closest thing to a safety hazard I noted. There is also a "borrow a sled" box on this hill for winter sledding which I've never seen before and thought was so cool, especially since the sleds haven't all been stolen.

Overall, there is a decent level of challenge here, but this course is definitely accessible to a variety of skill levels. There are a few more wooded technical holes, but mostly this is a moderately wooded but still somewhat open course where elevation change and some decent distance are the name of the game.

Navigation is mostly clear but I did embarrass myself and throw the wrong direction off of the 17 tee until someone corrected me. If you look closely there are brass numbers at the front of the tee pad that indicate the direction for the whole, but sometimes these aren't very obvious as they've darkened with age. Usually the proper direction is pretty clear but sometimes multiple baskets are visible.

If you are in the Janesville area, this one is definitely worth a stop. Madison and Milwaukee probably have more high caliber courses, but the Janesville/Evansville area is a respectable disc golf stop and this course is worth playing again.

Lustig 3.4 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Open park with most holes shaped by large mature trees. A prototypical, old school "Park Golf" course with a lot to offer players of all skill types.
- Decent amenities with bathrooms, water, and a playground in the middle of the course. Handful of benches throughout the course. Also a kiosk to start the course, with the basic map shown here on DGCR.
- Some good thought to hole design around the huge 100-150 year old trees here. It's certainly not haphazard, with there definitely being more advantageous plays on many of the holes. However, if you really want, most holes can be played with whatever your go-to FH or BH drive is.
- Love #12, which is the signature hole. Who doesn't love to bomb a driver downhill? 450 ft that can play like 375.
- Some nice wrinkles in #5, #15, and #16 that I liked too. Using the woods a little bit as you can. I love holes that give you something to think about as you tee off out of the woods and into the open. You shouldn't hit the first available tree off the tee….but could you?
- Also a fan of the trees in front of the #10 tee pad. There certainly are lines to the basket, but they most certainly are not straight-forward.
- In general, I wouldn't say there's a LOT of elevation here, but what's here is used well. Some slightly downhill or slightly uphill, and some going across the rolling depressions. Nicely done.

Cons:

- This course is really packed in there. While none of the holes technically overlap - there's a fair amount of overlap. Especially with how approachable this course is for beginners, you need to keep your head on a swivel, and bellow if you lose a drive in a direction you didn't mean to.
- The safety hazard of the #7 basket while standing on the #8 tee is particularly memorable for me. They're right next to each other, without a screen or other barricade.
- Also, for overlap, the road is very much in play on a handful of holes. I twice saw discs flying near moving cars around hole 12.
- Basic signage with number and distance, but not much else. Most holes have multiple pins listed, but it's very difficult to have any idea which of the placements you're shooting at unless you have a very good handle on distances. Also not sure how often they're moved - some of the alternate in-grounds looked pretty beat up and not likely to accept a basket.
- To that, as others have mentioned, dialing in on the desired basket your first go round can be tough. There are so many baskets in view. Having a picture of the basic map from the kiosk is a must to have the general correct direction for each hole. We were obviously not the only newbies to the course that day, as there were others before and after us kind of wandering around looking for direction.
- Also, physically seeing the baskets in or near the woods was sometimes very hard. The interior basket poles have bright chartreuse reflective tape on them, which helps a little, but even that gets lost in the sun and shadows. Bright orange or red tape, or flags on top of the baskets would help most pin positions here. Probably less of an issue if you play this course often.

Other Thoughts:

- Probably the best part of this course is how approachable it is for groups of varying skill sets. It's a really fun course to play. Part of that is because of the lack of real 'trouble' you can get into, and part of it is just for how easy of a walk about the park it provides as a round. This is very evident by the number of people playing we saw on a Sunday morning, as well as the heavily trafficked fairways and basket placements.
- Having a course like this as my home course would be just fine with me. It'd get a lot of play.
- Rounding up on the course rating just for it's play-ability and old school park course feel.

Lusting for Lustig? Maybe. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 hole course set in Lustig Park in Janesville, WI.

Nice Chainstar baskets, all in decent enough repair and well mounted. Several holes had multiple pin positions. There was some really nice pin positions here, with real chances of roll-aways, and lots of risk/reward putting.

Concrete tee pads, all in decent enough shape. Mostly long and wide enough. One tee position per hole.

Really nice use of the terrain here. The park is basically all rolling hills, but with a decent amount of elevation change. Most of the holes have some aspect of up or down to them. The first hole is a nice downhill wooded shot that gets you right into the action.

Tons of mature trees here are the other main obstacle. Nearly all the holes have multiple lines if you search hard enough, and they were nearly all plenty fair. Only a couple really tight spots, and even those weren't necessarily unfair.

A nice array of distances, from very short to a nice 460+ downhill bomber. It never felt like you were throwing the same distances too many times in a row, especially with the hills in play.

It would be pretty tough to lose a disc here, as there's very little heavy rough. A nice perk on a course with so many trees.

Cons:

There's not a ton to hate here. The tee signs are old and outdated, and the navigation suffers because of it on your first spin. It's not terrible, but you can get turned around, especially around holes 13-14.

Dual tees and more alt pin positions would be nice here, but you'd probably just end up with a bunch of shorter holes if it was done.

This place can be pretty busy, being the only good course in the area. Lots of 2 disc chuckers, and lots of other park patrons roaming around the pavilion areas. The course also has a few holes that run next to the road, with a real chance of hitting vehicles on errant throws or bad tree kicks.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this is just a solid course. It's not crazy hard, but it's not overly easy, either. You can work on a plethora of different shots if you want to because of the layout of the obstacles. This would make for a great course to hone your skills if it were your home course. Definitely worth a spin if you're in the area.

The Ratings are right on 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course is a modestly wooded and modestly hilly city park that is far better than most city parks. The course has been improved dramatically over the years and it now has great length to go along with an exceptionally good use of the landscape and foliage (which is mostly very big and mature trees).

Cons:

The course isn't marked that well. The signs are vastly out of date and not reflective of the new distances. One tee sign is planted at the back of a tee pad, preventing a player from using that angle and taking his legitimate 3 meters off the tee pad to start. This is one of my pet peeves if you've read my reviews and I have a message for all course designers:
FOR SAFETY AND LIABILITY REASONS, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR TEE SIGNS ARE A MINIMUM OF 3 METERS AWAY FROM THE TEE PAD AND PREFERABLY TO THE REAR AND LEFT.

Great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What I love about this course is its mixture of open and nicely wooded areas. The trees are all huge old oak trees and spaced out. There is almost no risk of throwing your disc into the wilderness and losing it, or having to dig through dense forest to find it. I have been playing this course for the past 5 years I think and in my opinion, its the best course in the area. (Madison has it beat, but thats an hour away)

Cons:

Gets somewhat busy but the majority of the time you can play without waiting for the people ahead of you.

Course can be kind of confusing to navigate first time playing, but my advice is to look for the metal plaque/inlay on the end of the cement tees. That little metal square is always at the BACK of the tee, so hopefully that will help you throw to the right basket if there is any confusion!

Other Thoughts:

I believe that Alcohol is NOT allowed. Park has clean bathrooms and a water fountain next to the first tee. Well-maintained.

A good players course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 1, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice variety in shots, big oak tree canopy, and fairly well maintained. There's a fence with a gate next to the courses wooded holes.

The shots vary but most hover around 300 feet in length, nothing too terribly technical but some shots are definitely challenging. Overall the balance of the course is player friendly and a great course for a casual round with friends. The longest hole is off the top of the hill on #12, which you can really open up on, otherwise most of the course can be played with fairway driver or a midrange

Cons:

Can get congested in the beginning of the course, but seems to open up well once you're beyond the first few holes. Some holes are close to the park road and have the potential for you to hit cars, so be careful. There are some erosion problems where the ground is bare dirt, so plan on getting your discs a little dusty. Also, although course is balanced, it's not as technical as some may desire.

The large amount of oak leaves on the ground in fall can make your disc vanish when it lands, keep an eye out.

Ringing Chains at Janes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is located in a very nice well kept park. Tee #1 is right next to the restroom and parking area. The park is scattered with large trees and slow rolling terrain. Some thicker rough lines the north side of the park.

Excellent concrete tee pads. They are plenty spacious and level!

The majority of the baskets have been updgraded to brand new Discraft Chainstars.

Tee signs on every hole. There were many with brand new print outs of the hole information.

This course was very easy to navigate. The only spot we missed was the transition from 12 to 13. We went to hole 15 on accident.

Hole #12 is super fun! Large hill with the basket out about 450 to 500ft. Road to the left out of bounds. Let rrrr Rip!

This is a great beginner course as there are very few places to lose a disc. It's a nice walk in the park.

Cons:

The course is pretty basic in terms of see the basket and throw to it. Most had basic pick your route lines.

This course is fairly short considering it's 5,400 feet and pretty open. There are no real tunnel type holes.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is an enjoyable course. It's a good option to play if you are traveling between Madison, Milwaukee, & Rockford.

Beginner/Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set in a hilly park with a ton of trees. There are some pavilions and such around, so interference from other park users is definitely possible. Some holes also play next to the road.
- Large majority of the holes are set amongst a ton of trees, which take away a lot of lines from the tee. For the most part, there are obvious lines to take to the basket. A pretty good mix of lines, there are a bunch of obvious hyzers and anhyzers, and a few where you have a choice of two wider lanes. There are some relatively open ones, and some that are quite tight.
- A couple holes are in tighter woods, where there is rough/jail off the fairway. These are pretty tight as well; well suited to a straightish RHFH shot. There are also some big downhill shots to complement these, wide open and pretty sloped.
- Constant elevation changes on this hole, there is very little flat ground. Great variety, with some tougher and easier ups and downs. Some sloping fairways as well, and some sloped greens near the end. Good variety in hole length too.
- Good signs, some giant teepads, navigation is pretty simple (#13 is past #15). Baskets are a little odd, with no top ring, but they catch fine (even allow some DROT through).

Cons:

- The terrain here is fairly consistent, what you see is what you get. There is no water here, and very little rough as well. A poor drive doesn't necessarily mean a poor score here. It can also get a little repetetive, though the lines aren't all the same, the look is.
- Layout is a little funky, there are some places where fairways are close, and one teepad is directly in another fairway. Definitely have to keep an eye out in spots.

Other Thoughts:

- A fun course that isn't too challenging, it's well suited to almost everybody. More experienced players will probably be able to skate through without any issues, but still have a good time.

Pros:

- Great course design
- Nice baskets
- Big cement pads
- Good signs
- Great flow
- Large mature trees
- No "rough" for the majority of the course
- River doesn't really come into play (normally i would consider this bad but there would be no recovery on this one)
- Large range of shot selection - something for everyone on most holes
- Playground for the kiddies
- Nice bathrooms and water fountains

Cons:

- Every hole is reachable by a descent player
- Wind doesn't play much of a factor (it has to be REALLY wind to get a lil action)
- Can be crowded
- Some holes are almost on top each other
- A commonly used road goes through the course

Other Thoughts:

This course is a blast to play. Good play is highly rewarded and poor play is not punished. Great course for working midranges and shorter drives. There are 2 holes you can let the canon out.
I can't really pick out a hole that stands out. They all have there fun about them. I suggest taking a hour out of your life to stop and play the course.

Anna Page Clone, Miniwaukan on steroids! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Massive concrete tees on every hole.

2) Nice teesigns list hole #, distance, and show a simple diagram. Vandalism does not seem to have gotten the best of these tee signs . . . yet.

3) Nice park with amenities. Looks to be a bathroom, a small playground, a fair amount of parking available.

4) Awesome mature Oak trees just like Anna Page used very effectively to make you pick your routes.

5) Very little underbrush which is very nice. Only a few spots behind the baskets late on the backnine. In those spots it is 25-40' away from the basket which still allows for you to get out, but it also emphasizes laying short rather than making the ace run may be the best play.

6) Nice variety of shot shaping allowed ont his course. Many of the holes have multiple lines to get to the baskets which is also nice, not favoring a sidearmer or a backhander, or a righty or a lefty. There are holes that are definitely better anny lines and sidearm shooters, but an equal amount that seem to go the other way also and that means good design.

7) Course flows pretty well, a few walks backtrack to the next tee, but it is not too difficult to figure out and it is not that far to begin with.

8) Elevation is used very well here with some rolling terrain, some slight uphills, and some slight downhills, one big downhiller (#12).

9) Garbage cans everywhere keeps the course pretty clean, but I played with a local and he said thye get people walking through the park all the time picking up garbage. NICE!!!

10) I like that the course is generally open, but it has two tighter wooded holes, and the elevation changes make this very well rounded.

11) Beginner friendly course because of its openness. It would be a perfect place to learn the game because you can learn how to do max drives, but it is long enough to force you to throw good upshots, and the green are relatively fair.

12) Alternate baskets on most holes, unfortunately not much difference between the two locations on most holes.

Cons:

1) Concrete teepads are not consistent in size. It isnt a huge deal but excess concrete on short holes costs extra money, and one of the longest holes has one of the smaller teepads! Sillyness.

2) Tee signs are put too close to the teepad. There is no reason they need to be on the back corner of the teepad, they could be 5' away allowing for a full use of the teepad.

3) Alternate baskets are almost no different on most holes. If they are going to make the effort the baskets hsould not be 20' apart they should be 50'+ away so the circles have recovery time and the turf can come back, plus it would offer some very different holes.

4) Not enough challenge for my liking. Sure I enjoyed the course but with some more trees or a few more holes in the more densely wooded part of the park would make it more well rounded. I like both styles of the open feel under a large canopy of trees and also the tigher wooded and technical holes. Having only two of the shorter technical holes is what I am referencing, but it is about all they could do with this park I believe.

5) Still lots of leaves from the fall on the ground. Apparently they do not mulch them up after a certain point in the year.

6) Baskets leave a little to be desired. They are not all one kind, some Mach baskets and some homemade ones also. They catch ok, but the points on some of the assemblies are shapr and can ding up your soft putter. The paint coating ont he baskets is also starting to peel off so that might need some attention, but the chains are good and they catch just fine.

7) For the most part it lacks the risk/reward. There are a few that the risky line can also cost ou some strokes, but often times the lines are open enough and with both options that there isnt a clear cut advantage to a certain line. This leaves most disc golfers comfortable to throw whatever they want and are comfortable with.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course. I love the setting of the big massive oak trees and a mostly open feel, but the oaks are there to force specific lines but at the same time give you options. Do not underestimate the importance of the lateral branching however because if you elevate the disc at all you might have to avoide some of the big lateral branching on the oaks. The tees are nice, the maintenance of the park seems pretty good too and the course gives a challenge because the holes are that perfect distance to force a really accurate drive to have a run at birdie. I had about 7 or 8 chances at birdie from inside 32' and only made three of them, so my round could have been much better, the funny thing is I drove the disc so well to get inside the circle on half of the holes. Not bad for a first time visit.

This course remindsme of Anna Page West with the massive oaks and rolling terrain. It also is a much better version of Miniwaukan in Mukwonago but with more Oaks, much more elevation, but it very much the same sort of feel.

B+ = be bery bery nice and fun! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

"Lustig" in German means "happy". That is what this course is all about!

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward. Fair, but harsh punishment for bad decisions or execution. == C+ (Most of the course plays through beautiful grassy areas with huge mature oak trees sprinkled about. It is almost impossible to take a 4 other than doinked putts. The wooded holes are short, so recovery from errant throws is easy)
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities for me. I throw 300' accurately, 360' max. == A- (Other than 3 holes that are shorter than 250' and one very fun hole that is too long for me to reach, the others all yeild rewarding birdies. It is a birdie fest course to be sure, but many of the birdies are truly rewarding and fun to get.)
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography == B (There is enough room between the trees usually pick at least 2-4 routes to the basket, so you never feel "forced" into making a specific throw. But there are plenty of holes where you need to shape you shot well to get on the dance floor.)
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion. == A- (Very well manicured. The oaks and grass are gorgeous. There is no seculusion from the other holes except on 1 wodded hole, but there is seclusion as this is a disc golf only park).
5) Bonus points for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them. == N/A

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (125 18-hole, 64 9-hole as of mid 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

Cons:
