Surprisingly fun course

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fun golf lines, decent baskets, thoughtful use of what they had.

Cons:

Could use some signage. Bathrooms were still locked from the winter season.

Other Thoughts:

I was really surprised by this course. I was expecting it to be kind of ho-hum, another 9 basket course with 2 tee pads. I actually really enjoyed it and would play it more if it was closer.

Good start, and room to improve

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 17, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lyndon's new course features some cool design choices, quality holes, and relatively straightforward hole structure and navigation. The course is 18 tees to 9 baskets (plus a practice basket), and because signs aren't in yet, it's a little unclear which hole is which. Thus, for the purposes of this review, I'll refer to the course as a 9 hole course, with either long/short or left/right tees.

The wooded holes, or holes around the woods (holes 2-5) are by far the highlight of the course. They're relatively unique, with varying distance, a few different choices, and some trouble to get into. Some play as two-shot holes for beginner to intermediate players, but still give opportunity for aggressive lines for advanced players. The different tee options are really spicy, causing some holes to play almost completely differently.

On a lot of the other holes, there's some risk/reward decisions to be made. You have to choose how much distance to bite off on holes like 3 and 8, the blind shot on 6, and sure, the tight lines on 1 and 9. The little fence by the light pole on 1 blocks the low RHFH/LHBH shot, which actually makes that hole better.

Cons:

Some baseball fields and a walking path come into play on several holes. 1 and 9 are the worst, since they play near baseball fields and give almost no legitimate room for a second tee. It's an issue on a few other holes as well. It's easy to see where the danger is, but because of some of the longer shots, you might be waiting for the path to clear for quite a while.

Some of the alternate tees don't make sense. Hole 7's long tee doesn't really add anything, and I only saw one tee on a few other holes. There seemed to be a triple mando on one of the tees on hole 4... but I couldn't figure out where that tee was. Basically, I think there's a little work still to be done here.

Some of the woods look pretty thick. That might be intentional, but you can be pretty close to the green with hardly any chance of getting to the basket in one. This will cause a problem for newer plays, and anyone who's on the course for the first time. The woods to the left of the basket of 1 are especially bad, but there's no way I know that from experience.

Other Thoughts:

For a course with only nine baskets, this is pretty decent. Unlike some other courses, I'm willing to refer to this as an 18-hole course.
There are a few lackluster holes, but it's overall a fun course. If you just play a 9-hole layout, you're not missing too much, so you can just keep to the longer or shorter pads if you want. This certainly isn't a bad home course to have for the locals.

Elevation change is pretty limited here, but I don't really mind it. Some elevation change is somewhat subtle on a few holes, and some holes are a little easier because you can glide down the hill or something like that. However, I think the elevation change is a bit of a con on hole 7, where the hill blocks your view of the path you're throwing over or near.

It looks like there are a few long pins just into the woods on 5 and 6 which will make things a lot more interesting. It would be really nice if baskets were added to those holes to properly make an 18-hole course. Other than that, the only way to improve the course is planting a few trees on 3, 7, and 8, and maybe playing into the woods near hole 6.
