Mostly, Wide Open Course With Plenty Of Bomber Holes For You Big Arms! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Madison Meadows is another large, beautiful park with lush green grass and scattered trees. The park has all the usual amenities you'll find in a large city park: BB courts, ball fields, tennis courts, picnic areas and a small pond in the middle of everything.

The course has a kiosk at the beginning with a minimal amount of information displayed on it. The large, concrete tee pads are surrounded by wood chips. They look rather nice. The tee signs are taller poles with hole #, par, distance and three different distances. There only seems to be pads for the longest Whites. I think there once were pads for the Reds and the Blues. They aren't around anymore. There are also some of these poles with next tee signs on them. They were a help with navigation. The baskets are an older model but catch fine.
There are a nice variety of distances here ranging from the low 200's to # 11's 575' which is wide open and fairly boring.

Most of the holes are lacking in challenge and creativity. The challenge comes solely from the distance. There just isn't much here to make them more interesting. The park is almost entire flat and there aren't enough trees to create any memorable holes.

Cons:

Park is mostly flat. There aren't any holes that you'll remember or talk about after your round. The longer holes just throwing across a wide, open expanse of green grass grew old really quickly on me.
# 17's tee sign is missing.
With course being as open as it is, it probably really has suffered when mature trees had to be removed due to disease. That's a shame.

Other Thoughts:

I guess the strong armed players will enjoy their experience here. My experience was just OK. I actually preferred the short course over at Lombard Commons. I just felt there was a little more creativity there.

Just Average 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

~ Length Variety, unlike many other local courses that stick around 250', there are a number of holes that allow you to stretch out your arm

~ Park is clean and well maintained (Apart from some inconsiderate golfers leaving beverage cans by some tees)

~ Enough "different" holes to keep things interesting and allow for trying various lines.

Cons:

~ Like most other Illinois courses it is completely flat

~ Most holes are wide open and don't force any line shaping.

~ Depending on the time of day you go to the park, pretty much all of the first 4 holes may have other park visitors on the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Without the old Central Park course in Oakbrook to contrast the generally wide open nature of this course, it can get pretty boring after many play-throughs. There is almost no forced line-shaping, which can be both good and bad: no technical shots, but I have played through playing the entire course driving forehand and backhand which is nice to work on shots.

Update:
Just played for the first time since the large removal of diseased trees. A number of holes have suffered quite a bit, including 7, 9, 11 (almost all trees gone), 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. This was never a course to really make you work on shaping lines, but is now even more open. There are still enough holes with enough trees to worry about that rounds aren't really that boring, and I still had a lot of fun at the doubles league.

There is also talk of course improvement in the not so distant future. Some new trees have already been planted (notable on hole 6) and hopefully that trend continues and the course can be brought back better than it was before.

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good mix of longer and shorter holes - Though you can certainly play this course all backhand or all forehand there are places where one is more natural considering the tree lines in the fairways - Pretty easy to navigate, good tee signs and cement tees.

Cons:

Doesn't have any memorable shots - Most fairways are pretty much wide open - Very flat park - Multi-use park, often have to wait for people on the walking paths - Lacks difficulty.

Other Thoughts:

Considering the land it is built on the course is alright but it simply is a boring park for a course. Good for intermediate level players looking to work on their drives.

Middle of the road 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety in terms of legnth. The course offers a few holes in the 400s a few in the 500s. The designers did a good job using the space to make the holes feel different. 15/16 are both well made holes offering some actual shot variety. The trees are made to make the longer holes harder than they really are as they tend to block the long hyzer throws. (There are plenty of opportunities to get a good rip in, the course is for the most part open if you can control your release)

The course if very well kept and the grass was under control.

The course plays very quickly. I got through all 19 following some competitive players in under 1:45.

19 is a marque hole built to play over the lake which really only plays on that hole unless you go very errant on one other.

Cons:

While there is some variety the shorter holes are pretty easy birdies with a mediocre drive.

The course is in a high use park. The walkers never really interfered with my play except on 19. They however are still there and can create some safety issues to keep note of. My beef with the course design is that the designers used the nearby baseball fields as obstacles which if vacant offer a good risk reward but if they are in use make the risk of a runaway shot a bit problematic. (Its been a while since i've missed by over 50 yards but I also have no interest in hitting a 12 year old in the head with a large fast moving object). I'm just not a fan of using fields as go-arounds.

19 shoots half blind at a sidewalk across a lake (if they want to have this hole its the only way they can make it just keep in mind that dog walkers don't care that your landing position is where they are standing). I see why they put this hole in but it feels contrived as its the last hole on the course as 19 and the only truly unique hole on the course.

Other Thoughts:

The course has a good offering in terms of hole type and length. I like 19 as a experienced player with a reliable 200ft drive. I feel that for an amateur it really just serves to eat discs. Which is funny because the rest of the course is very beginner friendly in that there are no real unrecoverable hazards.

Overall I felt this is a true middle of the road course. It was fun and offered some challenging shots but also was not unique or special.

Meadowy Mediocrity 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 5, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Madison Meadows disc golf course is part of a multi-purpose park. Mostly flat, grassy, and open, with scattered trees, the 19 hole course winds its way around busy walking paths, baseball diamonds, football fields, and a small pond. Water comes into play on a couple of holes, with one fair-sized (approximately 210') water carry on hole 19.
- While no part of the course could be considered "wooded," there's enough variety in tree size and type to help this flat and grassy course keep your attention and provide some challenge. #15's fairway has several short scrubby trees that come into play nicely, with route options available, each with their own risk/reward. #16's fairway is a pseudo-tunnel shot through the tree trunks (and while not a true tunnel shot, it's as close as you'll get on a course of this nature).
- A good mix of distances. Everything from shorter ace runs to a couple of 500'+ holes allow big and small arms alike a chance at a solid round.
- Concrete white tees, descriptive signage, and grass/natural blue tees (marked by blue nubs) on some holes.

Cons:

- Goose excrement on many holes. While far from the worst I've seen on a course, playing on and/or around crap of any kind is never my idea of fun.
- The course seems to hold a lot of water during rain or after snow melts. Muddy/wet conditions in places detract from the experience but don't necessarily render the course unplayable.
- In some areas, other park activities (football, baseball, walking paths) interfer with discing and could pose a safety hazard.

Other Thoughts:

- While the designers certainly did a decent job working with the terrain and trees they were given, the flatness and repetitive nature of the course detracted a bit from the overall vibe. Nothing you'd want to avoid, but not necessarily anything you'd go out of your way for, either.

Heavy traffic practice field with baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Cement Tees
-Practice Basket
-Well maintained
-Some length (by comparison)
-Decent Signage

This a decent 19 hole course with that offer a little bit of length compared to many courses in the area. Baskets, Signs, and Teepads are well maintained. There are holes with multiple tee locations (although grass), that offers up some change (generally shorter).

There are a few trees on most holes which offer some sort of obstacles, however, they are easy to avoid. This makes this course a good place to work on multiple lines at a course. I have gone to this course and only throw backhands, forehands, rollers, or tommies for my drives and be able to work on different things without it effecting my overall score dramatically.

Cons:

-Multiple use overlapping course
-All baskets are straight on
-Lack of garbage cans for space
-Layout could be confusing for first timer

This park is huge. They spread the course across majority of the park. Normally this would be a great thing. Unfortunately, the course comes into play with a hockey court, numerous baseball fields, football practice, soccer practices, an ice rink in the winter, a playground, and the walking path on a bunch of the holes. The walking path does make for a good option to use as "on or over is out of bounds", however, the average REC player does not play that way. On most rounds here, I spend 10-15 minutes waiting for joggers, strollers, and dog walkers to get out of range just in case. I am not the stronger player, however, I am a decent control player and will take the extra stroke on a REC round over forcing it. With the course being mostly open, the wind is a major factor. I have heard of a few people being hit by discs here so being super courteous is the way to go. Baskets were pulled here for a while due to a disc incident.

There is a lack of garbage cans throughout the course. I usually pick up an entire bag of garbage when I play a round here. With the amount of activities at this park, you would think the garbage cans would be more accessible. Have to walk to throw sometime away leads to a lot of litter.

This course also has my number one pet peeve. All baskets are pretty much straight away. You can walk onto any tee and look straight and find the basket. There are slight left or right positions but nothing requires a true anhyzer or hyzer line. I understand with the course been mostly open that it is harder to force these lines, but there are opportunities. The best they do is put a couple baskets behind the trees.

Other Thoughts:

I do not particularly find this course fun to play. It is not a terrible course, don't get me wrong, it is just nothing special. It just get boring pretty quickly. It is a good place to try different lines. It is a reason to have to carry drivers in your bag. But no where near a destination course. I think if my friends that I play with didn't live so close, I probably would almost never end up at this course. Other than holes 15 and 19, the only variety is how long the holes are and where the tree you need to avoid is.

I am giving this course a 2.5 (decent/typical). That is what sums it up best. If they moved some baskets around to add some challenges with lines, I could see bumping the course up to a 3.0. They need to add a better variety of shots. Also bringing the retention pond into play some more would add to the value as well. All and all, it's decent. I just wouldn't want someone from another park district coming here to see what they should set up their course like. It would lead to more bad courses in the Chicagoland area. If you're local, it's worth playing. If you are from out of town, I would skip it. There are better options South and West of here.

Straight Away 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 31, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful, clean park. 19 playable holes. Good tee signs and next tee indicators. All baskets present and in good condition. Good clean tee pads of sufficient size. Ample parking. Flow from basket to tee is easy to figure out. A few signs where needed to point the way. Walk between basket and tee is a bit far on some, but do not complain about walking if you are out playing DG. Park crowd was light on a weekday in the middle of the day. On a weekend and in the summer I am sure there is some crossover and interference with others playing other games.

Cons:

No benches at any of the tees. Not a single garbage can anywhere on the course. Kudos to the locals as there is ZERO trash here. Holes are totally devoid of any inspiration. Zero thought was put into where baskets are placed. All holes are just point and shoot. All holes play straight away. Holes are well laid out through this park so as to offer a good mid length course, but with a little thought as to basket placement this could be a MUCH better course. Normally a nice 18 hole course in a nice neighborhood park would earn a 4... but basket placement cost this one a point and a half. Tee signs show alt tee pads... but I did not see a single one anywhere on the course.

Other Thoughts:

Overall very playable, very fun, mid length. I could see this become a MUCH better course with just a bit of creative basket placement and at the same time some variation in hole length. I would gladly see 6 of the 18 holes get shorter if the trade off was that they got more interesting/challenging with some hyzer and some annie placements. The sweet spot on this course is 14, 15, 16, 17 where the trees are finally used to some interesting impact on play. 6 could also be great if the basket was moved up and moved over for either a great hyzer or an annie as well.

Beginner/Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 23, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Course is set in a very large park that makes great use of the available terrain. Most of the holes are more or less open, but there a few tricky ones as well.
- Majority of the holes use a wide range of trees, from large pines to small saplings to force a variety of lines. For the most part, a straight shot is the best option, though there are a few tricky shots here and there. #5 has large pines that protect the basket from the right, and #1 is a short but sharp dogleg left.
- Other holes use a denser forest to make tough lines. There is a small forested area in play on some later holes, like #15 and #16. #15 has a tree-filled fairway, going over is the best option. #16 is a small tunnel shot, plenty of pinball potential.
- A small pond is in play on a couple holes, like #2, #13, and the water side of #19. It is close enough to the fairway to alter a typical line, which is nice to have.
- A wide range of hole lengths, from very short to very long are present at this course. Between the varying hole lengths, the different kind of trees, and some water, there are a lot of different shots.
- Some minor elevation changes on #17 and #18, going up and down a smaller slope. Compared to the rest of the course, it is very noticeable, but nothing too crazy.
- Good baskets, teepads, and signage. Easy to navigate and find everything, with the exception of #19 perhaps.

Cons:

- Number one problem with this course is the number of non-disc golf activities that go on. There are football fields, baseball fields, walking paths, gazebos, and even some roads at the edges. Normally, the walking path is the only thing to look out for, but the other things are a big distraction and could potentially be in the way.
- This course is as flat as they come, with only a couple holes with any slope what-so-ever. Add in the fact that there is zero rough, and it really is a very beginner-friendly course without much challenge. I think for most people the only issue is some of the hole lengths, or the odd tree here and there.

Other Thoughts:

- Like I said, a very beginner friendly course that will offer almost no challenge to a seasoned player. There are a few tougher holes, like #5 and #11, but the majority are pretty brainless. A great place for a relaxing round, or to bring some newer players to. That said, it is not just a wide open field, there are plenty of scattered trees to give each hole some individual character, as well as some water.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Madison Meadow is a decent course that, despite it's flaws, is an enjoyable place to play for a wide variety of players.

This course has a good variety of shots, and multiple tees on almost every hole, so even experienced players will be able to find challenge here. There's no elevation whatsoever, but there is a suprising amount of distance. Trees provide obstacles for almost every shot so a decent amount of line shaping is required on many holes.

I don't know if this course has a signature hole, but #19 gives you the option to throw a 625ft bomb with a small patch of trees blocking the straight path to the basket. Or an alternate tee/basket location exists where you throw directly over the pond. This is essentially an entirely different hole, but it's labeled #19, so if you want you could make this a 20-hole course. In order to do this, back track from the #19 basket toward the walking path along the pond. The tee is right off the path a few feet from the edge of the pond.

Recently (in the past year), the park has done a really good job putting in new tee pads, and some very nice signs. For a multi-use suburban park, it's good to see the effort being put into this course.

The course flow is a little weird in a few sections, but 'next tee' signs exist almost everywhere there is any ambiguity (except from #1 to #2... you have to turn left and go about 50 yards towards the baseball field for the tee pad)

Cons:

This place defines "multi-use" park. If you play during the day on a week day, or during low-traffic times, you should be fine, but during the summer/fall, there are usually people everywhere. The walking path around the pond comes into play on a couple holes (namely #3 where the path is basically in the fairway). The town's youth football/cheerleading teams use this place to practice in the late summer and fall, so if you come while this is going on, count on having to skip at least 3 or 4 holes.

While there is a good amount of shot variety here, this course just seems kind of boring. You won't leave here saying "I remember hole x and y, those were awesome shots," Maybe with the exception of the two #19's which are pretty unique.

It's hard for me to criticize the new teepads, because I'm sure a lot of time and effort went into installing them, but those things are too small. You can get a two step run up, maybe, on them, but that's it. On some of the longer shots, you'll probably have to start from three or four steps behind the pad if you take a big run up.

Other Thoughts:

Madison Meadows is worth checking out. It's the only course in the area with 18 holes, and there's enough challenge and variety for a wide range of skill sets. They take good care of this place, and it's a nice park overall from a visual standpoint,

From Westmore-Meyers, go west on Madison until you see the parking lot on your left. The first tee is next to the tennis courts.

-Good concrete tee pads (short tees only)
-Good variety in length, with several 400+ foot holes, as well as short 220' holes
-Excellent course to practice fundamental lines
-2 par 4 holes, that make you work for the 3
-plenty of makeable birdies
-pond comes into play on #19 and from the long tee on #3
-good opportunities to let some big drives rip (#8, #12, #17, #19)

Cons:

-very very flat, no topography to work with
-not much variety in hole type, most holes are very straight, with only one true R-L hole (#1) and one true L-R hole (#14)
-football fields near #6, 7, 8, and 11 sometimes cause disruption in play during the fall
-drainage isn't the best, and some holes (#4 almost has it's own lake after a heavy rain) become pretty muddy after a rainy spell

Other Thoughts:

Overall, while certainly not the best 18 hole course in Chicagoland, it's probably the best centrally-located course. It's a fun round to play, and it feels good to rack up those easy birdies on a casual round. Will definitely play best for people who have confidence in their straight shots between 250-350.

Standout holes: #4 (need a very good drive or a very good upshot), #11 (650' through scattered trees with OB fields), #16 (pure tunnel shot), #17 (fun, long hyzer hole, nicely positioned basket), and #19 (great hole to air out on, but be careful of the lake on the right hand side)

NIce open course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 24, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a large flat multi-use park with lots of large scattered trees. There is a small lake that is in play on a couple holes, and lots of ball fields and other park areas as obstacles. The lake is a very cool obstacle on a couple holes, and adds a nice risk reward element.

There is a nice mix of long and short holes, from short ace runs to a couple real long bomb holes. Most holes have at least some trees in the fairway, and a few have more dense stands of trees to shoot through. The last hole has one tee that shoots over the pond for a very cool finishing drive.

The park is large enough that the holes have nice separation, and never throw on top of one another. The design made good use of the available space and trees to make a course that doesn't feel too repetitive despite the lack of elevation or much variation in foliage throughout the park.

The tees were in pretty good shape, and were concrete on the main pad for each hole. There were alternate tees (sometimes two alternates on a hole) that really changed up the hole and gave a different look, and these had nicely leveled dirt or grass tee areas. There was at least a numbered post at each tee, with nicer signs on some. The grass was well-mowed when I played, and the park was nicely kept in general.

Cons:

The navigation at this course could use some work. Many tees had no signs at all, and the signs that were in place were often faded and didn't show the tee or basket. There were several long walks between holes, and there were only a couple that had next tee markers. A couple places the next hole was in a non-obvious direction, and it took some wandering to figure it out.

The tee pads were pretty short, especially for the longer holes. Most were not flush with the ground, so they weren't conducive to simply starting behind the pad. The baskets were a mix of different types and ages, and seemed a little inconsistent. The number plates were faded, and were occasionally facing the wrong direction, which made a couple holes without tee signs a little frustrating.

A couple holes played too close to ball fields, playgrounds and roads, could be some safety hazards there. The course could have used a little more variety, with most of the holes having a pretty open straight or slight hyzer shot. There were enough trees and space to create more holes that would challenge other shots.

Other Thoughts:

This course is very beginner friendly, and the only place to lose discs is in the pond. Newer players will enjoy this course, as it's not wide open, but the fairways are easy to hit and poor drives aren't severely punished. More experienced players won't find much challenge here, though there were a few holes that will let you open up on some longer drives.

This is one of the better courses in the area, so it's worth playing if you're around. It's nothing too special though, so I wouldn't suggest driving way out of your way to play this one.

Pros:

Lots of opportunities to let it rip as long as you aren't a 450 driver. There are 3 sets of tees at each hole but I would like to know where they are because I could only ever find one per hole. Was pretty muddy when I played but I go barefoot most of the time so it wasn't a big deal. Hard to loose a disc as it is mostly open. Went on the first really nice saturday of the year (85 and sunny...b-e-a-u-tiful) and only saw 3 other groups out there, and didn't have to wait at any hole. 18 holes is nice for the area, took me about an hour and fifteen minutes to eat up this course solo. Shot a 7 over my first time through (playing each hole as a par 3) but my drive was a little off and I hit a lot of trees for how scarce it is...so there is definate opportunity to get some nice birds and try to go under playing par 3 for all. Ran into a garderner working on her vegitables around hole 14-15 with a dog named Buddy, she was really friendly for someone that I'm sure gets disc golfers roaming into her property all the time. There have been some modifications to this course within the last few weeks. Nothing major, but the new tee placements do add some more difficulty and some more chances to let a drive fly.

Cons:

Nothing really techniqual except hole 15(?) (which is actually a plus for me as I am somewhat of a beginner, but I know most of you guys like your difficult shots). Grass was a little longer than I would have liked but I can't recall ever thinking I was in danger of losing a disc.

Other Thoughts:

I had a lot of fun playing this course with friends and by myself, it had a low risk of losing discs (which is big for me because I am in college and have almost NO money!) but it just doesn't compare to the 18 hole courses farther south (Shannahon, West Park, etc.) or the tight technicality of the 9 hole courses (Central Park in Oak Brook or Knock Knolls in Naperville). Definatly a course to relax on and let some discs fly...bring your whole bag! I hope with this construction going on they will replace the signs and they are almost all vandalized or missing.

Good for area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The biggest pro for the area is that the course has some a good variety of lengths in it. It is hard to find courses in the Chicagoland area that have enough space to put long holes in it, but this course has that. This course is a good stress relief course for that person who is sick of hitting every tree in the woods-most of the holes are very open (which is a con for me, but like I said, good stress relief). The park is also scenic with a pond that has a fountain in it (which comes into play on two holes, depending on how you play them). I also enjoy the giant field to the north of hole # 19 which allows for ironing out new discs/throws that you have been wanting to practice.

Cons:

The course is somewhat boring, with very little elevation change and a lack of woods. Most holes are out in the open and straight. If you come to play the course, you will disagree with me on the first 3, but after that you will know what I am talking about. But like I said in the pros, sometimes this is a good thing if you just want to go out and chuck a disc with little though.

Other Thoughts:

Another plus for this course is the park. There are other facilities if you want to make a whole day out of your trip. There are basketball courts, baseball fields, tennis courts, street hockey, a gazebo, and grates for grilling. Also some playground if you want to drop the kids off while you are out for a round of Disc Golf.

Nice course that could use some work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 22, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I found a lot of this course to be fairly challenging, with a decent amount of obstacles. Some holes were more wide open then others, but I liked the balance that was provided. The concrete tees are nice, and what signs are there are fairly straight forward.

Cons:

As we had never played this course before, I was unsure as to where exactly I needed to park near the first hole. Luckily, I guessed right when I picked the large parking lot. As nice as the existing signs are, it's even more of a pain to have a number of missing signs. Very little variation between holes, as they are all fairly level. As I think back to our round, it's hard to think of any very distinguishing holes. One hole is a little too close to both the road and a playground for comfort...be careful! 19 itself can be dangerous, given the pond - I'm sure there are too many discs to count in that thing. The baskets are inconsistent, and some of them are fairly old.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a good 19 hole course. I'd definitely play it again, despite the more negative features on this course. Nicer baskets might be in order, and watch out for geese! They can be a pain, but they'll certainly disperse when a disc is flying their way. My round here was definitely positive, and I would surely play again if in the area - it could stand to require a little more skill and a little less arm on some holes.

Decent 19 Hole Course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 9, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Provides some shot variety, but not much line shaping.

A nice, big park with 19 holes and a fair amount of distance on most holes.

Decent tee signs, tee pads were good, and baskets were fine.

Nice to be able to throw some decently long drives on a course in the area.

Cons:

Flat course without many obstacles or punishment for bad shots.

Nice to have a 19 hole course in the area which makes it better than most 9 hole courses, but it is an average 19 holer.

Nothing truly amazing, but probably worth a play at some point if you are within an hour away.

Other Thoughts:

Good course for beginner to intermediate players. It is fun for a round or two every so often. Won't be super challenging, but still a fun time.
