Above Par City Park Course

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Concrete Tee pads (see Cons)
-Decent Signage
-Baskets good
-Elevation and some trees to work with
-Works around other park activities
-Well kept park with nice backdrop of lake

Cons:

-Small tee pads
-A lot of up/down/up/down
-No "wow" or signature hole

Other Thoughts:

McKinley Park hosts a good DGC in the western part of Creston, IA. A typical multi-use park with a pool at the south end, several shelters, a set of squash courts and a large playground just on the other side of the street to the north. Play stays away from most of these and winds in and around and up and down the hills that lead down toward a nice small lake. Not overly long, but the out of shape old guy (*raises hand*) can get a little winded going up and down these hills many times. Only 4 holes over 300' with the longest at 381', so no real boomers here. On the high end for a city park course, stays away from the other activities, works around elevation, has some nice scenery, and some trees. The short tee pads are...short, of which fixing would add to the rating here. An enjoyable round, I might play here again.

The Unknown Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 8, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very clean, well kept course
-DISCatcher Baskets
-Concrete Tees
-Trash cans every 4th hole (reason it's a clean course)
-Two pin placements every hole
-Great signage, easy to follow layout
-There is a lake for fishing, a skate park, basketball courts, playground for the kids, shelter houses and grills, restrooms and camping nearby. Great park for family weekend outing.

Cons:

-Tee pads are a little small for my taste. Only about 4 X 8.
-In some places, a higher line, resulting in a longer drive, could be taken if some tree branches were trimmed.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed playing this course. The front nine seems pretty easy and the back nine is tougher because of more trees and tighter fairways. I found out who designed this course, because they saw me playing and stopped to see who I was and welcome me to their course.

Jim Street and Kevin Deboer are great guys! They obviously take pride in the sport, and are currently designing another local course at Southwest Iowa Community College. I look forward to playing that one too.
