9 hole school course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

For intermediate and advanced players this course is a great place to practice your mids and putters. Beginners will enjoy the challenge. Family friendly. Good mix of shot types across the 9 holes. New Prodigy baskets. The course is maintained and well thought out.

Cons:

The course tends to hold water and stays a little muddy after a rain. Take care crossing the road as it can get busy during after school pickup.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course that only takes 30 minutes to play.

Mallard Creek STEM Academy DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 23, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

MCSA DGC is a small, primarily open course located at Mallard Creek STEM Academy that plays around a number of detention ponds in a few small fields. Each hole is marked with a sign post with the hole number and distance painted on it. The natural tees are marked well and each hole has a new Prodigy basket.

While it is mostly a pitch-and-putt course, it actually features a variety of hole designs that create an enjoyable round, and a great place for beginners to learn the game. The detention ponds create excellent obstacles with potential for rollaways. I played a few days after some rain, and they were still all dry.

The course was apparently designed, so that younger players could skip Holes 4-6, which would allow them to avoid crossing the road. The distances of the holes seem to advocate this as well, as the middle holes are the longer holes on the course - with Hole 4 actually giving players a chance to grab a fairway driver or faster midrange. I like this concept in general, allowing players to warm up before their longer throws, then cool down afterwards.

The final holes allow players to experience woods golf, and have a different feel from the rest of the course, but are equally well designed.

Cons:

While they were mostly good, some of the natural tees are a bit uneven, especially Hole 4, which was unfortunately the one time it actually mattered.

I noticed a few small safety concerns that are potentially worth mentioning. Obviously you have to cross the road twice to play the full course, but at least some thought went into how this was designed - and the road doesn't seem to be that busy anyway. Hole 3 throws directly towards this road and Hole 4 parallels it to where a yanked shot on either could wind up in the road. To get from Hole 6 to Hole 7 you either have to cross Hole 3's fairway or walk around the backside of Hole 3's basket. Hole 8 throws directly at Hole 2's fairway, and if you're shot is overthrown and finds the gaps in the trees, could end up in that fairway. I am not sure if the course will ever see enough traffic for these to become major issues, but you never know.

While it was fun to throw something other than a putter on Hole 4, it was also probably the most boring of the holes on the course. Just a wide open, slightly uphill shot - with the only real scoring separator on the hole being distance.

It is a school course, so available hours are limited.

Other Thoughts:

I actually enjoyed MCSA a lot more than I was expecting to. If it was in my neighborhood, I might make my way there on days when I didn't want to play a full 18 holes, and just wanted a bit of pitch-and-putt fun. Especially since most of the holes are distances that my backhand throws aren't as dialed as my forehand throws - it would personally be a good place to practice for me.

I am going to give MCSA a rating of 1.5 for now, because despite the few safety concerns I have - the course seems to be kept in excellent condition and it was just an overall enjoyable mixture of actual throws and pitch-and-putt. If the maintenance on this course wasn't as stellar as it seems to be at the moment, it would likely deserve a lower rating.
