Cross the secret brook to find the secret soccer field!

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Meadow Brook Elementary is a school in the eastern suburbs of Grand Rapids, MI. The school has recently installed nine red Chainstar Pro disc golf baskets around existing athletic fields on the edge of the school property.

The course is mostly pretty open, but there are a couple of challenges lurking. Hole 3 appears to be an easy ace run playing slightly downhill, but there is dense rough behind the pin that could make for a tough scramble if that ace run is missed. Also not apparent from the tee, there is a small brook hidden in this rough (behind a tall chain link fence). After playing the hole, you'll cross the brook and play the next few holes in a meadow area that is not at all apparent from the parking lot - so I guess the school's name is justified! The school has added a soccer field and playground in this back area. My favorite hole #4 is only 191', but requires a little bit of hyzer (RHBH) to get around a couple of tree trunks.

There are a couple of benches in the back area of the course. There was also a porta potty near the middle of the course when I visited, although I'm not sure if that was a permanent feature.

Cons:

The course is kind of just thrown onto the athletic fields of the school, so you might have to skip holes if those fields are in use. When I visited, a soccer practice was going on so I had to skip holes 5 and 7.

The first hole plays next to the school drive.

The course is short, flat, and mostly open with no water hazards and few to no obstacles on most holes. Although it's honestly not awful for elementary school students in that regard, that also means it will be boring for most disc golfers. There are only two holes longer than 300'.

The tee areas are just natural and marked with small (e.g. 1ft tall) wooden posts in the ground with tiny pink ribbons on them. Several of these were already missing when I visited. Some of the tee areas happen to utilize existing pavement, whereas others do not.

Other amenities are scarce. No kiosk, practice basket, or trash cans to be found. There aren't any navigational aids either - you will likely need UDisc to navigate.

Other Thoughts:

There is a nature trail on some rolling wooded terrain adjacent to the school in a different direction. I only peered into it, but it looked like there could be an opportunity to utilize that space and create disc golf holes that are both safer, AND more interesting, than the ones that currently exist.

This is basically just nine baskets scattered around some athletic fields - and some are in dangerous locations. The best I can say is that if the athletic fields aren't in use, this isn't a terrible design for the elementary school students and inexperienced parents who may be the most frequent players on this course. But unless that applies to you or you are trying to hit every course in the area, this one can safely be skipped.
