Pros:
Meadow Glen Middle is an overly simplified layout. There's a lack of space to cram nine holes in here. And yet, this course has some surprisingly fun layouts. This is your quintessential 'I Want to Know What Love is' hole: you secretly like it; you'll sing along to it in your car. But you'll deny it the second someone questions you about it.
- Three really fun, really 'not good' layouts. Hole 1, aka 'throwing down the stairs', Hole 3, aka 'throwing uphill through the fence', and Hole 9, aka ' bouncing your disc off the retaining wall' hole. Any, and all of these, are holes you can easily be throwing multiple discs on.
- In addition to those, #5 is a decent downhill hole; #6 throws towards bleachers; #7 has a fun approach shot with the basket partially protected by a light pole and fence; and #8 throws over and/or around a portion of fencing with the ability to ricochet a shot of the baseball field fence. Only #2 & 4 are truly open and straight.
- Good for kids and beginners. The longest hole - #7 at 474 feet - is an open field shot until your approach.
- Lots of ace runs. Suffice it to say, all but #7 are aceable. At the very least, lots of birdies.
- There's just a hint of enough challenge that bad shots, or bad luck, will be punished. The fences on #3 will catch any shot too low & coming from the sides. Yeah, you'll feel like a fool hitting the fence 40 feet in front of you on a sub-100-foot shot. Or, you play a bounce off the fence on #1, 8, or 9, and it kicks the opposite way of what you were expecting.
Cons:
The layout is mediocre. From an objective perspective, there's nothing justifiably good about it. So, you'll have to rely on the fun factor.
- Essentially, there's no challenge. An advanced player is shooting 19 (at worst) here: 2s on every hole but #7, which is an easy 3 (at worst) for better players. I'd think a sub-18 score is easily in play and should be the challenge for advanced players.
- Awkward shots, angles, and transitions between holes. After finishing #3, why are you walking straight back down #3's fairway to get to #4? Then, when finishing #4, why is #5's tee much closer to #3's basket?
- If any sports events are going on, portions of, if not the entire, course are unplayable.
- Prepare for scratching or nicking discs throwing on the sidewalk, the road, or into fences.
- No amenities on the course itself (in case that's an issue for your 15-minute round).
- No shade here if you're playing during the Summer (in case that's an issue for your 15-minute round).
Other Thoughts:
Meadow Glen was surprisingly better than expected. I expected nothing. I got a little bit of something. So, mission accomplished?
- For eight of nine holes, putter or mids are all you need. Just bring one longer disc for #7.
- If all hard surfaces are OB, several holes become much harder, namely #1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. #1 becomes an island green. #6's basket now butts right up against OB. It's at least a fun change of pace.
- This course also screams a good opportunity for an ace race or creative safari layout. Play #6 to 9's basket. Play #1 to 4. Play #2 to 3 or #5 to 7. Adding a little length could add a little spice.
- This is an above average (or good?) mediocre course. The fun factor gives it a boost. If you don't like the 'fun' portion of this course, then you're definitely going to dislike the course. I can't blame those who feel that way.
- A bagger's course, or for people living really close by. Otherwise, play the quality 18-holers in Columbia.
