I wonder if Meadowbrook Elem and Bethel Elem have a big DG rivalry?! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

DISCatchers, all are in good shape.
None of the holes play close to the building.
Mostly wide open, so not much chance of losing a disc (although I almost lost one that I overcooked on #8).
Practice basket, right at the front of the school. If I had to pick up my kids in carpool, I'd be all over that!!

Cons:

No tees, no tee signs, no next tee signs.
A few of the holes are along a school road, easy to beat up your discs.
#2 and 3 were soggy when I was there.

Other Thoughts:

Very similar to nearby Bethel Elementary, in fact they are less than 4 miles apart. Pretty much wide open, long holes, probably not appropriate for young players, and not much challenge for older players.
I guess elementary kids are a little young to get too serious about the game, but, most other school campuses are so built up, there is not enough room for a course. Plenty of room here for a decent practice course.
Yes, I even found a few holes I liked here:
#7 - tee off on the track, to a guarded green under low hanging branches right near a large bush.
#8 - I walked around the school and teed from a sidewalk - across the playground! Only one there on a Saturday morning! Made for some fun shot shaping.
#9 - Tee near the side lot, about 200' to the basket on an upslope, with heavily overgrown OB directly behind the basket.
Nice easy finish after getting four courses (54 holes) in before lunch. So it was a short drive into Canton to hit the riverside BearWaters Brewing Company. I recommend the Sliding Rock, just be ready if you are downwind from the local paper mill!!

Almost two Safari Aces! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.152 Rating) A park style niner wrapping around a school campus.
- CHAINS - This must be a well-funded school as the baskets are top of the line DISCatchers.
- SORT-OF BEGINNER FRIENDLY - After the chains, I have to start reaching to find nice things to comment on. Although this course is probably too long for beginners, it's forgiving enough that newer players won't be overwhelmed. There are no tee call outs on this layout. So I think most would play from the parking area for an open field shot. (6) and (7) are also open field shots. Holes (3), (8) and (9) are lightly wooded. The tee shots on (2), (4) and (5) have heavy overgrowth on the left, but there's ample bail out to the right. So overall somewhat decent for newer players and they likely won't hate their experience. That said, there are some significant cons that could hinder the odds that a younger player gets hooked
- QUICK PLAY - Despite the poor navigational conditions I encountered, I finished the round in 35 minutes.
- MAINTENANCE - The grass was mowed.

Cons:

Needs some work..
- TEES - I did not find any indication of tees or tee markings.
- LAYOUT FLOW - Needless to say, without tee markings, getting around this course is pretty bad. Other than the baskets, nothing is marked. So how does one determine where to start, when there's no first tee? I started inside twenty feet of basket (1) and scored myself my first North Carolina ace... just kidding, I hit the chastity belt. After (1), I followed the logical basket to basket concept. This process goes uninterrupted until after (7) as there is no next basket to be found. Head east around the building and then south to find basket (8). From looking at Google maps afterwards, it would not be wise to play basket to basket on this one as the best line plays over a large playground. I played that one inside twenty feet too... and concluded that I need to work on my putts if I want to score more safari aces.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - It felt like recreational challenges going basket to basket. A couple baskets are well guarded and two shots require 400 foot plus power. Overall, bad shots are not overly punished and shot shaping is limited.
- CHARACTER - Baskets can be found, but nothing else.
- UNIQUENESS - There is nothing here I haven't seen 50 times before. All park style shots when going basket to basket.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Meh. I scored the course a 1.875 out of 5 overall. No glaring eyesores but too open for my preference.

Other Thoughts:

Meadowbrook Elementary will likely be the first disc golf experience for many students. It will work to teach the game to younger kids, but likely lacks the draw provided by Pokemon or Minecraft or whatever game young kids are playing these days. On weekends and afternoons these grounds should be able to provide a nice practice environment for neighborhood players, but I doubt they are calling their friends to have them join in. No need to check this course out for those beyond a five minute drive unless they are making a "Do not recommend list."

Where's hole #8?

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Meadowbrook Elementary is a fun, open course that plays around the school's property. Lots of room to air out throws; not necessarily the best design for grade-school students.
- First off, the course was better than I expected. A lot of chances to throw new/different discs on open holes. Being so open, any misthrow could be salvaged with a relatively easy up-and-down.
- A couple of decent layouts. Essentially the few trees on the school property were used as obstacles. Holes #2 - 5 all had good aspects to them. #4 was probably the best layout (by default) with this dogleg left's basket protected by trees. You'd see this hole on many a course and not be surprised.
- As Olorin had previously stated, if you tee off from the prior hole's basket, this course has a (mostly) logical flow to it. I teed off from the practice basket for #1 and followed that flow. That is until I came across the absurdity that is #8. More on that later.
- For a small town elementary school course, basket and upkeep were in excellent shape. And this course has a practice basket! If you see any kids practicing putting before teeing off, that's impressive.
- Great practice course spot. Take a bag of discs, head to the open field behind the school, and take aim at any of the baskets for holes #3 - 7. Or just practice throwing back and forth.

Cons:

The biggest con is that the layout doesn't fit its intended audience. If the course is meant for the school's students, the layout is way too long. Most holes are seemingly in the 250 - 400 range. #7 is around 500 feet. Not a lot of kids are throwing that far.
- The only other issue is the confusing placement of hole #8. After playing #7, I didn't see a basket for #8, so I assumed the practice basket doubled as #9. After finishing my round, I discovered #8 is on the opposite side of the school building. Following the logic of every other hole, this means you're supposed to throw from the back-left corner to the front right corner of the building. Measuring it on Google Map, you're looking at a hole around 700 feet long.
- Why does an elementary school have a 700-foot-long hole? Why does an elementary school have a hole that plays around the perimeter of the building, with every throw a risk of hitting the building/smashing a window? How does that promote the sport?
- For the sake of uniformity, make a clear identifier as to where players are supposed to start their rounds.

Other Thoughts:

Meadowbrook Elementary is about as paint-by-numbers of a course as you're going to find. This is level 1 Sudoku stuff here.
- I wasn't expecting much. The fact I needed to use a driver was a success in and of itself. Still, only carried three discs for my round and was fine.
- 8 of 9 holes are so-so; 1 is just so out of place wrong. I think the course could stand to have a little more variety in hole layouts. Replace #8 with a 150-foot ace run would give the course a nice change of pace.
- This is as average a course as you'll ever see. You wouldn't want this to be 18 holes with as little variety as there is. Solid multi-use design for locals. Easy to skip and avoid for everyone else.
