Memorial Park

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 21, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-- Beautiful park setting with hundreds of coastal live oak trees.
-- Course does not favor one throwing style (RHBH, etc.).
-- Average hole length is 270 feet, but that doesn't really tell the story. Three holes are longer than 320 feet, and four are shorter than 220 feet. Most play through tight groups of trees with a low, overhanging canopy that adds a lot of challenge.
-- Some of the holes are so tightly wooded between the tee and the basket that a wide, sweeping shot around the outside is the best available route.
-- The ground is very sandy but I still got several good skips. The sand makes the course excellent in wet conditions but can make for less-than-ideal footing in dry conditions.
-- Yellow DISCatcher baskets show up well. Some baskets are closely guarded by trees and low-hanging branches.
-- Except for throwing OB on 3, disc loss is unlikely.
-- Decent course map at the parking lot.
-- Course flow is fairly straightforward; finding your way is fairly easy.
-- Nice restrooms at parking lot.
-- Plenty of trash cans.
-- No seating at the tees, but there are benches along the walking path that goes through the course. A couple of benches have been added (5 basket, 9 tee) in the past few months.
-- Plenty of parking, with a playground and other activities in the park.

Cons:

-- On my first two visits (June and July 2021) the impact of the multi-use aspect of the park was not really apparent. On my third visit (a Saturday morning in October 2021), it was obvious. Not only was the parking lot packed, the crowds for the numerous youth soccer games made it nearly impossible to play disc golf. Hole 5 was unplayable because people were sitting in chairs along the walking path that could be your line to the basket, and they were camped out less than 10 feet from the basket. There is also a bench 18 feet left of the basket. People with bigger arms than I have could reach the soccer fields on 4 and 9 with drives.
-- No tee signs. A yellow 4x4 with the hole number is all you get. With a little bit of looking, you can see every basket from the tee, but distances would be nice.
-- Two sets of holes (4-5, 8-9) are somewhat parallel but not in a back-and-forth way. You end up backtracking a lot.
-- Walking path comes into play on several holes. Two soccer fields are somewhat in play on the final few holes.
-- Long walk from 9 to 1 when you finish.

Other Thoughts:

-- Teepads that were mostly small/medium sized rocks and starting to show some wear, were recently replaced with paving stones (each 9x9 for a 3.5 x 7.5 foot mostly level tee pad.
-- Your view/rating on this course might largely depend on how big your arm is. If you've got 350-400 feet off the tee, you're only throwing driver on one hole. I don't have that kind of power, and I enjoyed my round trying to avoid the numerous trees.
-- I saw two other "groups" on my first visit (a Sunday morning: a solo player and a father/son and no other players on my second visit (a Saturday morning), so the course doesn't seem to get a lot of traffic. No one else was brave/stupid enough to try to play on a Saturday morning in October. Now I know why.

Pleasant Community Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a beautiful multi-use park, with hundreds of coastal live oak trees.

The nine holes are relatively short, ranging from 185' to 453', but with only three holes over 250'. Most play through tight groups of trees with a low, overhanging canopy that adds a lot of challenge. Any drive that lifts even a little will get knocked down. There is decent variety here, with holes calling for straight drives as well as left and right-finishing drives.

Some of the holes are so tightly wooded between the tee and the basket that a wide, sweeping shot around the "outside" is the cleanest route. Having both a forehand and a backhand will give you more flexibility both on the drives and the inevitable scrambles.

The ground is very sandy so skips are minimal. Most often, shots stop very near where they first hit the ground.

Familiar DISCatcher baskets show up well in the shadows and catch great. Some of the baskets are closely guarded by trees and low-hanging branches, so be ready to do some straddle putting, or in some cases a turbo or scoober to go over a branch.

The ground below the trees is completely clear and brushless. A couple of holes have a brushline along one side that might gobble up a shanked drive, but overall, this is a forgiving course with regard to disc-finding.

Cons:

Teepads. Just kidding, there are no teepads. There is a simple 4x4 post with the hole number, but nothing else. The ground here is loose, fine, sand. It doesn't pack down at all, and each tee location is a deep, uneven hole in bare sand. It is easy enough to push it around and even it out, but there is nothing stable to push off of. This is the loosest ground that I've ever tried to throw from and it doesn't work well. Constructed tees would be a big upgrade.

There is a basic course map at the parking lot that gives hole distances, and that is it. No additional information at the tees.

There are two pair of holes (4,5 and 8,9) that parallel each other. You play the first hole, then walk back most of the hole length to the next tee which is offset laterally. Sort of odd from a course-flow standpoint.

This is a short, technical course. Folks who value long, open fairways won't find them here.

Other Thoughts:

A walking trail winds through the course and gets plenty of use. Be prepared to wait on walkers before you can play some holes.

Plenty of parking with playgrounds and other activities in the park.

This is a fun little community park course that isn't particularly challenging, but serves its purpose. With the only other nearby courses being the tough Live Oaks courses and the rather poor Port Aransas DGC, this is a welcome addition to the area.
