Milligan Stew

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

+DESIGN: I really enjoyed this course. All of the holes have some kind of challenge that makes you think about disc selection and placement. The trees are put to good use as is the elevation, which leads me to the next pro.
+ELEVATION: For central Indiana, the elevation is impressive here. While nothing very strenuous, it makes for some very good risk-reward shots and death putts.
+COURSE FLOW: This course has an intuitive flow, and I didn't find myself using Udisc much, if at all. The one place I can think of that could be tricky is the walk from hole 20 to 21.
+O. B.: If you don't like O.B. you might not like this course. I like it since it makes sense and adds challenge. Just be sure to check the tee signs for what is O.B. and what isn't, as it is different on every hole.
+TEE AREAS: The tee pads here are spacious concrete slabs. Each tee has a nice tee sign with a trash can on it.
+22 HOLES: I like a round of disc golf to feel complete, and Milligan Park delivers. If too many of the holes were filler, this wouldn't be a pro, but I don't think that's the case here.
+BATHROOMS: There are two sets of bathrooms here. One about 400' away from hole 1, and another in the park center by hole 12.

Cons:

-NO STANDOUT HOLE: Nothing has a high "wow" factor here. When I think of this course, no hole really pops out and makes me think, "Wow, that hole was great!"
-HOLE 9: This is a wide-open ace run with an island green. While there's nothing wrong with that, the island isn't very clearly marked. There is a marking, you just have to look for it.
-HOLE 12: Don't throw a long drive here if there is a car parked in the parking lot just beyond the basket. Otherwise, your disc might become one with the windshield of Bob's Toyota Camry.
-THE BASKETS: These are just bad enough to be a con. I don't know what the problem is exactly, as I have never had much of an issue with Mach (insert number here), but the chains are stiff. Not a huge deal, but maybe they need some lube or something.

Other Thoughts:

=There is a giant target painted on a shed on one of the last holes. If you aim for the bullseye, you pure the gap. It's as simple as that.
=This course could be classified as pitch and putt. No hole is above 350 and all are par 3s.
=If you are looking for a fun course near the northwest side of Indy, you've found it! Milligan Park is worth stopping by to check out. It's not a destination course by any means, but it merits a visit.

More Than Just a Walk in the Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Milligan Park DGC is a 22 holer that will take you on a scenic tour through (you guessed it) Milligan Park. The course flows well and each hole has a colorful tee sign to show you what to expect.

This course was designed by someone who plays disc golf. The baskets are placed cleverly in conjunction with the trees and slopes to reward you for hitting your line and punish you for missing it. There is a small creek that winds through the park and can come in to play on about a half dozen holes.

For the most part this course avoids the rest of the park. Holes 10, 11 and 13 play near a skate park and pool but they shouldn't come in to play. Holes 16 and 17 are near a playground but again the design encourages you to throw nowhere near them.

The layout calls for a variety of shots and other than holes 4 and 5 no two holes really feel the same.

There's a practice basket by hole 1 with distances marked out in 5 foot increments.

The shed on hole 19 is painted like a giant archery target - you gotta see it to believe it!

Cons:

Most of the holes are less than 300 feet and the longest hole is maybe 350. To be fair I'm not sure how they could fit a long hole in here without taking some out and there actually is a safari layout on Udisc if you are so inclined.

The course can get pretty swampy if it has rained recently. I've seen standing water on the fairways for holes 3, 4 and 5 under such circumstances. It could be tricky to find your disc if you throw into the creek when it's up. Paradoxically the creek is often dry if it hasn't rained in the last week or so.

Other than the target-shed on hole 19 there's nothing that really stands out here or threatens to take your breath away.

Other Thoughts:

Located about 10 minutes south of I-74, Milligan is the worth the detour if you're a fan of Par 3 golf at it's finest.

It's certainly not the most challenging course but there's enough OB and trees to keep you on your toes.

I know fun is subjective but I would argue this may be the funnest course in west central Indiana (not exactly setting the bar high in fairness). It's certainly the most fun you can have in Crawfordsville!

Good course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Technical course that challenges your accuracy with challenging tree and creek obstacles. Be sure to bring your disc retriever for errant creek shots. Nice elevation changes. Easy to find the next hole.

Cons:

Signage could be better. Shows hole number but no visual marking signs. Baskets are often bent or not level. T boxes not always level.

Other Thoughts:

If the signage, baskets and t boxes were updated, I would give this course a 4. Still glade I played it and given the opportunity would play again.

Milligan Park update 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tee signs are being updated, sorry for any inconvenience. These just came down Saturday July 15th.

Cons:

Treatment of the tee sign posts will occur before new signs can go back up. Please print a course map, to aid in hole navigation, if you don't know our course. Copy can be found on this site under "Link/Files" tab. ETA for project completion is August 15th, 2017. Thanks, Dave Dolph

Fantastic course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 29, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is well signed, and is very well suited for beginning players. All the holes are par-able, and the creek is shallow enough and translucent enough for most discs that land in the water to be retrieved. The holes are all very unique too, which makes this course fun!

Cons:

There is one frustratingly hard hole where you have to shoot over three branches of a creek, I can't seem to find a line where I can consistently land to set up for a par.
Sometimes you are throwing off of a road instead of a teepad.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great park course, as it makes very good use of the few large trees spread out around the entire area. The course takes you on a tour of what seems like the entire park, and walking around the first time to me felt like I was on an adventure.

Great Small a Town a course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 27, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very solid intermediate level course. Will provide challenge for beginners and intermediate players. Holes may be on the shorter side for more advanced players.

Baskets - 22 Mach 2 baskets that catch great. They are marked with hole numbers on the pole. No spit out issues,. Also a practice basket at start of course that have pavers surrounding listing distance.

Tees - 1 large concrete tee per hole. Hole 21 has an alternate tee for those either looking for a longer or shorter hole.

Signs - Signs at each hole including hole map, distance, par, and points you towards next hole. When needed there are signs pointing you towards the next tee. Large bulletin board with course map and description of the sport.

Variety - Holes here favor both lefties and righties or either style of throwing. Trees on every hole but not to point where it's over weakling. Provide plenty of challenge. Lots of elevation change here. Some sort of minor elevation on each hole. Creek comes into play on several holes that could be issue when filled with water. Not many holes over 300.

Holes 11-16 stood out to me. Great group of holes in the middle of the course.

Plenty of shade but would still recommend bringing fluids.

Elevation - Several uphill and downhill shots. Some shots have rolling hills. A few blind shots due to elevation. Nothing too extreme. 20 feet elevation at the most.

Creek - Creek intertwines throughout course, sometimes coming into play multiple times per hole. If it is filled it can get in your head. There are poles available throughout the course to use to get discs out. Creek was dry when I played it.

Bridges when needed!

Trash cans at every hole attached to signs. Also multiple cans throughout courses. Benches throughout course including a pavilion with tables.

Very peaceful park with a few playgrounds, pool, skatepark, and baseball fields. Kept clean and well maintained.

Nearby stores if you need food or drinks.

Easy to get to, not too far from the highway. Easy to navigate. Flows great. Ends and starts at same spot.

Restrooms on site near start / end of course.

Cons:

Not many cons from this course.

Holes are definitely on the shorter side. My girlfriend felt comfortable playing this course due to the shorter holes. Might be to short for advanced players.

Tees - this course could be greatly improved by adding a second set of tees at each hole. It would boost the variety and playability of the course.

Pin Placement - Alternate pin placement would also improve this course. Not sure if there are alternate pin placements since I've been here once but it always keeps things fresh to have rotating locations.

Walk from hole 20 to 21 was a little long.

Few holes come a little close to each other which could add danger if busy. Holes 2-6 and 11-14 come to mind where baskets, tees, and fairways come close.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course and will definitely come back. I was definitely sold on the variety and the park itself.

If the course added dual tees that were more challenging, rotating pin placements, and more trees, I would consider giving it a higher rating. I would like to come back but don't often get to this part of the state. It was worth a try. I wasn't disappointed.

If you are in the area or traveling through I-74, I would definitely recommend this course.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Milligan, to me, is like the epitome of a 3.5 course. It exemplifies what a "very good" course should look like. It has great signage, tees, and baskets and is an absolute blast to play.

Each hole is unique in some way which keeps this 22-hole course from going stale. A lot of times after 9 holes or so, you get a good feel of what to expect, but I was always a little surprised at what I needed to do at the next teepad. The shots are for the most part very intriguing. There are several ace runs and great deuce opportunities, but they can also go bad very quickly if you don't take advantage of them.

The holes are great for beginners because they're all under 400 feet, but also very challenging for pros/"birdie hunters".

All in all, I wish I would have had a chance to play another round here. I definitely recommend it!

Cons:

No real signature hole that really dropped my jaw and made me say "Wow, this is amazing. Let me go grab my camera!". While it's an amazing park course, it's still just a park so you have to watch out for other park goers and there's no real feeling of seclusion.

I would imagine that some people would argue that the shots are too short, but I think it does a great job of being a beginner/intermediate player course.

Other Thoughts:

Very fun to play. For being 22 holes, it's not very energy draining and is a very chill course that will test very many different lines. This is a great course to practice variety on. Hyzers/Anhyzers/Sky Hyzers/Laser Beam shots.

Check it out if you're in the area!!

Noob Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course is in a city park and has been fitted well into the park. Many many shorter holes. 9 are under 225ft and only 3 over 300 (1 is from pro tee). But it does use the terrain well! Great baskets, outstanding Tee Signs and Good Tee pads for every hole. There is a creek that winds through the entire park that come into play very often, it is very clear and shallow so little chance of losing a disc but a good chance of losing a stroke or 2. There are several OB areas so placement of a shot can make or break you. This would be an outstanding park for a Ace Race!

Cons:

The baskets are very close in several areas and can cause you to shoot towards the wrong basket. Hole signs with numbers on top of the basket turned to the tee pads would do a great deal to correct that. The park is very busy so you have to watch to make sure you are not going to hit anyone.

Other Thoughts:

Overall great public park course worth the trip. It would be a good place to intro someone to the game and still keep an experienced player happy with the varied shots needed.

Short but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 6, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a hilly park with a nice creek running through. The course was expanded from 9 to 22 holes, but you'd never know that playing it now. They did a nice job of making the course flow together and have a consistent feel throughout. Many of the holes use the elevation changes in the park to add some variety and challenge, there are a few downhill holes with risky greens near water, and some tricky uphill holes. The creek comes into play quite a bit, and is generally used pretty well to add some nice risk/reward elements to the course without too much danger of lost discs.

Though many of the holes are similar lengths, there is a lot of variety in hole shape so it doesn't feel too repetitive. You'll need to shape some different lines between the mature trees here to get your birdies, and the elevation and ob on most holes adds to the feeling of variety. There are good concrete tees, and decent baskets. The signage is pretty good, showing the hole distance and layout with a direction to the next tee.

Cons:

One major issue with this course is how often it brings paths and roads into play. It seems like this park gets quite a bit of traffic on a nice day, and that could be a serious safety concern, especially as the course seems to attract a lot of less experienced players. There are also a few places that ball fields or picnic areas can come into play, though it seems like the design tried to minimize that.

The course is pretty short overall, I found myself throwing a putter off most of the tees. There isn't much more room in the park, so I think it was a good decision to make a shorter, more beginner friendly course here, just know that it won't be all that challenging for a more experienced player. There are some spots where there is a long walk, make sure you pay attention to the arrows on the tee signs if you don't want to do some extra walking.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun place to play, and the park is nicely maintained. I would definitely recommend a stop here if you're in the area. Beginners won't find too much punishment for errant shots other than the creek. Since it's shallow enough that discs are easy to retrieve, it shouldn't be too frustrating. More experienced players will find this to be a deuce or die type course, but the shots have some variety and the creek definitely adds some fun factor.

Now there's a reason to come here 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The recent addition of 12 new holes has really provided a reason to come and play this course. The added holes compliment the original holes very well and I commend the MCDGC for doing a great job on the expansion. The holes are very fun and utilize a variety of obstacles and terrain to create very fun golfing opportunities. The park is beautiful and features many large majestic trees and a meandering creek, which weaves its way throughout the course. You will need to shape many different shots to navigate this course well. Although most of the holes are fairly short, it can be a bit deceiving as the holes play a little tougher than the distance might make you think. Nice tee pads and tee signs enhance the course as well.

Cons:

As mentioned before, the holes are mostly short, which can be a con for pro level players, but really is appropriate for the only course in the town of Crawfordsville. The homemade baskets are OK but could probably use another set of inner chains to help them catch better.

Other Thoughts:

I highly recommend coming to play this course. This is no doubt one of the funnest new courses in central Indiana for golfers of all skill levels. You won't be disappointed!

Solid Course Layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent signs, decent tee pads, plenty of obs in the form of access roads, creeks, parking lots, and mando's. Course has plenty of variety and uses all of the park's natural terrain to its betterment. Expect to play over and down hills, creeks, obs, and mandos. Very friendly for newer players and a course to rip and run on for more experienced players. Thank you for the trashcans.

Cons:

Very few complaints here: maybe a few more directional signs for some of the holes, pads are plenty long, but I can understand how some may not have enough room, although I had plenty of space and thats usually my first gripe with any course. Some of the fairways run pretty close with, but this course really maximizes the use of the land, so thats not really a con, more like a little bit of nit picking. Keep it on the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this course, played it today with a buddy, we are both intermediate players and we had a great time. Didn't shoot as well as we can, but we had fun - which is the main concern. This is a great course to really workout your midrange game. All of these holes are very deuceable, although if you throw an errant tee shot you can hit a variety of obs that can rack up your score with penalty strokes. Have fun, run those chains.

good stuff 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

RShott's "Another Solid Course in Indiana" says it very well. Not heavily wooded but still moderately challenging long and short shots. Lots of fun to play.
As of recently the park has added numbers to some of the pins to sort out some confusion.

Cons:

Nitpicking - Hole 6 (with a "mandatory" sign) requires you to play around a tree to the left when I would have liked to play to the right.
I had trouble finding the first hole.
Some holes were a bit difficult to figure out which pin to aim at, but checking with the hole map will help you.

Other Thoughts:

I suggest entering from Mill St. and Joe Allen Parkway. The first hole is located near the brick entrance and a statue at this intersection where a practice hole is as well.

Another Solid Course in Indiana 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a really fun course to play. It is a 22 hole course that plays through a large multi-use park with lots of large mature trees, elevation, and a creek. The variety of holes is really great; there are uphill shots, downhill shots, blind approaches, drop off greens, doglegs to the right and left, and low ceiling shots. I never felt bored playing this course, all of the holes are different and interesting and required a variety of different shots to score well. The teepads are concrete and are nice and large. Also, the signs at each hole do a very good job of showing the layout of the hole and the distance.

Cons:

There are no numbers on the baskets, and as a result there are spots where it is confusing as to which basket to throw at. There is one hole on the back half of the course (I forget which one) that plays blind and pretty close to the road; it would be wise to use a spotter to make sure no cars are coming before you throw.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I thought this was a really great course, there are a ton of really well thought out and interesting holes. It is a challenging course, but at the same time a really fun course to play. It should be noted there are a lot of leaves on the ground in the fall, so make sure you watch where you disc lands or you could lose it very quickly in some places. Definitely stop by and play this course if you are in the area.
