Redesign as of July 2021 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Good for beginners/short throwers
- Good signage and course maps/scorecards currently available
- Wooded holes give a nice walk through Sevier County hills
- Good place to throw some discs on your vacation

Cons:

- Short course for more experienced players
- Navigating Mills Park can be confusing with the fields and other different use areas
- Hole 1 needs many trees cut down to give any sort of line available on the drive
- Hill for holes 1,2 and 9 is steep and rugged

Other Thoughts:

Mills Park, where the course is located, is a nice park to get away to from the Gatlinburg/Sevier County madness of tourism. Course is redesigned as of July 2021 with better signage throughout. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: course now begins and ends at the Gatlinburg Community Center. So don't park at any of the Mills Park parking lots.

I'm fairly inexperienced in disc golf but I had fun with this short course. Holes 1 and 2 are very hilly and wooded. Hopefully they will take out more trees for hole 1 to give better lines to the basket. Hole 9 was another interesting one with the basket sitting on a steep slope 30 feet or so into the woods. Be prepared for your putts to roll back down the hill unless you are able to land the disc right on the hill. Nothing overly memorable about the course but it was worth a drive over to play. Most of the holes are lightly wooded but fairly straight shots.

Other things to note:
- Don't go to Mills Park to start! The map and hole 1 are now behind the Gatlinburg Community Center!
- When I played on July 14th, the signage showed that there are plans to have an A and B basket for each hole but as of then, there was only one basket per hole which was sometimes the A and sometimes the B basket.
- There are a few baskets that are hard to find (9 is one), but there is currently temporary signage to show where they are and small flags on those baskets. Also there is some temporary signage to show where to go in between holes with a confusing walk between sports fields.

Decent Little Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mixture of wooded shots and some open ones.
Fun/challenging short shots

Cons:

Not safe on number 9 if you have kids. Extremely downhill. Just skip it

Other Thoughts:

Had a stroller with my 2 year old and my 5 year old with me and we about killed ourselves on 9. They really need some kind of steps or something to somehow manage that drop. Other than that it's a fun little course.

Decent course. Beautiful scenery 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Fairly easy to play
Not too crowded
Beautiful view of the mountains
Practice baskets

Cons:

A bit confusing to navigate
Very long walk from hole 2-3
Tee sign missing on 2
Holes interfere with park goers

Other Thoughts:

This isn't a bad little course by any means but I thought it looked better in the pictures. Holes 2-3 are probably the most difficult and the only holes where a forehand or anhyzer shot would be beneficial. You can easily play this course in 45 minutes. I'd avoid playing between 2-3 because it's located near a school and lots of kids walk and can get in the way. Most likely I will play next time we are in the area. I'd love to see more courses in the area.

Nice Short Course in Smokies 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent use has been made of the hills in this park. Nice signs, baskets, and tee pads are all present. This course provides an excellent challenge for recreational players and the technical nature of the holes offers enough to keep it interesting for more advanced players. Elevation is the key to the challenge here.

Cons:

The course is separated into 3 different areas of the park and kind of breaks up the flow a little. Hole 1 and 2 are on the hill by the parking lot.The longest walk is between hole 2 and 3, around a soccer field. Holes 3,4,5, and 6 play through the next section before a shorter walk to hole 7. The tee pad for hole 7 is on a sidewalk. I wasn't sure where the official pad was until I noticed the concrete finished around the edges on one section of the sidewalk. I assume this indicated the tee pad. Holes 7, 8, and 9 play in this section of the park and finish a good walk from the parking lot. While there are a couple of long walks they are not enough to detract from the enjoyment of the course.

Other Thoughts:

This course was very fun to play and presented enough of a challenge to keep things interesting. Hole 2 didn't seem to fit real well with the rest of the course as far as difficulty is concerned. It is the longest hole on the course at just over 300 feet but also has the tightest line by far. It is somewhat of a poke-and-hope shot with a hard to envision RHBH turnover line through the woods and down the hill. It is listed as a par 4 on the scorecard which is probably what it should be for a recreational course. If you are in the Gatlinburg area it is well worth the short drive to play this course. During football season this course/park could be very crowded so plan accordingly.

Closest park to Gatlinburg TN for tourists in the area.

Cons:

Only a 9 hole course and a football field separates holes 1 & 2 from the rest of the course.

Other Thoughts:

The 9th hole is a treat for a steep down hill throw but there are no built in steps to help get down from the tee.

fun short hilly course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 25, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It's close to town, which is great for a tourists jonesin to play like myself. It has a unique design with great use of elevation. 2 8 and 9 were by far my favorite. 9 I literally said " wow " and emptied my whole bag.

Cons:

It's very short. Going from basket of 2 to the t pad of 3 is annoying to navigate. Plus the fact that 9 ends so far from tpad 1 is rather frustrating. Some upkeep is needed. A tree had fallen on top of 7 tpad the week I was in Gatlinburg and wasn't removed the entire time I was there.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a great course if you are in Gatlinburg.

Cons:

Gnats/mosquitos
No long throws

Other Thoughts:

Overall this was a fun course and since it is the only course near Gatlinburg, it makes it a little more attractive. Most holes require a pretty well placed throw in order to birdie. Holes 2 and 8 have way too many trees and are almost impossible to do well on. Hole 5 is directly behind a tree and unless you get it to the other side of that tree on throw 1 or 2 you have no chance at par.

Mini-golf's competition in Gatlinburg 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 28, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good course map at hole one and good signs at every hole. Pleasant park environment with a variety of holes. Level, clean tees and good baskets. Elevation changes throughout and some demanding shots. Ample parking, public restrooms.

Cons:

Course layout can be hard to follow on first visit. Course ends far from parking.

Other Thoughts:

I looked forward to playing this course while visiting Gatlinburg on a family vacation, and it did not disappoint. I played two rounds the morning after my arrival and enjoyed the experience, though finding my way around the course was a bit tricky despite the helpful maps. When I first arrived I took a digital photo of the course map with my camera which I ended up consulting twice during the round.

The trickiest spot was after hole two, where there's a fairly significant walk to the tee for number three, which is on the other side of the track (fenced). Once you've finished hole two, face the track; you want to head to your left (i.e. towards the road you drove in on) to go around the track and reach three. Go the other way and you'll end up bushwhacking and/or wading.

Hole two was the most difficult for me, requiring a curving shot through the woods; it was a wake-up after the relatively benign opening hole. A couple of shots are good ace opportunities, including six, despite the fact that it's a blind shot -- quite nice. And several people have commented on number nine; it is a short, steep downhill that's a real treat. Just be careful going down after your disc, as the slope can be quite slick.

It's great to have this disc golf course near the amazing assortment of other attractions in Gatlinburg and nearby, not least of which are the multitude of mini-golf courses. It's in a park near the downtown hustle, but provides a quiet getaway. Now if only Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge had as many disc golf courses as mini-golf courses....

A better type of tourist trap, for sure! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Mills Park DGC was a nice relief to the touristy hustle and bustle of Gatlinburg. Located a few miles from center city, its an easy trip over here to enjoy this one.

Course is equipped with Mach 5 baskets, two layers of chains. Baskets catch very well. Tee pads are concrete, of sufficient size for most holes. Ground behind tee pads are level and flush with the pad, making an extended runup easy. Wooden tee pad with griptape on #9 is quite small, but when you get there you'll realize that you won't need anything more. Tee signs depict hole, map, par and distance. Map and distances are accurate. Large map of the course displayed at hole 1(located just off the parking lot), along with scorecards/maps available at the kiosk, a nice little extra.

Layout of the course is fairly technical. A few wooded holes force precise lines, open holes utilize change in elevation to add a challange. (Optional)OB can make this course even toughter. Course is balanced when it comes to uphill/downhill shots and left/right/straight shots. A great mix with no repitition. Most baskets are visible from tee pad, #2 and #8 play blind, but the map on tee signs are accurate.

Practice basket located next to the pavilion in an open, unused area. CLEANer bathrooms than I've seen at other courses, located under the pavilion by first tee. Some places to sit along the way include picnic tables by the start, more tables by hole 4.

Course is well manicured, and the park as a hole is well kept. There were no obvious problems here in the way of litter, deterioration or vandalism.

Cons:

Above all else, the gnats were a problem(at least in the spring/summer months). Bugs in the eyes sure doesn't help your accuracy.

Walk between holes 2 and 3 could be a problem if you aren't carrying a map. After hole 2 take a walk along the far side of the track, enter gate onto track and walk to the opening on the opposite side where you will find tee pad for hole 3. Walk from hole 9 to hole 1/parking lot is a slight hike, and the map could also help.

9 holes, and appears that there is no room to expand.

Other Thoughts:

This is a tough course for me to give an accurate rating, but I've done my best. I bounced back and forth with this one. Equipment in great shape, holes short and some uneventful. Great use of OB and obsticles, paths along fairways. Rough walking towards the end, but treated to the best <200' holes I've ever played(hole 9).

For me, Mills Park comes in a little over a 3, but not quite 3.5. Garbage cans, lack of flow in a few areas, and length of holes keeps this one from anything higher. Holes range from 165'-300', but change in elevation adds a great challange.

There are no trash cans within the course, so at least pack your trash to the end. Cans near pavilion at start.

Difficulty - Not a bad course to introduce players to the game, with some short holes to boost confidence, but a few tight lines which can show newbies the importance of throwing a disc where you mean to. Intermediates will enjoy some unique lines and the use of elevation to add a bit of difficulty. Pros will use this as pitch and putt practice, and will cure the itch if a round is greatly desired, but no long bombs and only one super tight line here. All levels will appreciate the beauty and creativity of hole 9.

I wouldn't venture out of the way to play here, maybe if you're just passing through or visiting the area. The closest course is almost an hour away, so its worth playing if you're trip doesn't venture away from Gatlinburg for sure. But for a 9-holer, definately not bad.

Nice recreational course in the hills 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 7, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Being in the foothills of the Smokeys, on the outskirts of town, there's lots of natural beauty. There's also lots of elevation changes with every hole going up or down.
*There's good fairway shape variety with 4 St/ 3 Lt/ 2 Rt.
*Some side sloping fairways (on 2, 5, 7) are a subtle feature that enhance the challenge of your shots.
*They've got the Basics covered well with excellent tee signs with maps, good concrete tees, and good Mach V baskets.
*There are several Amenities including score cards with a map, a good Mach V practice basket, and a large sigh with a map of the course.
*Hole 9 is a fun, tempting little ace run of 165 ft with a 40 ft elevation drop! I emptied my bag trying to hit one.

Cons:

-Be careful of other park users on holes 2, 4, 6, 7, 9! Potential safety issues abound with many picnic tables too close to baskets and walking trails.
-Hole 9 ends far away from hole 1, so if you park close to hole 1 then you have a long walk back to your car. It's best to split the walk up by parking in between 1 and 9.
-There's a pretty long walk from basket 2 to tee 3, and tee 7 was a bit hard to find, so make sure to have a map.

Other Thoughts:

Course Level = A tweener between harder Red or easier White. I'll call it White (most suited for Intermediate players rated 875-925), but holes 4-6 and 9 play as Red level It's a shorter recreational course where you could take the wife and kids for a quick round. (Hole lengths: 3<199/ 5 of 200-299/ 1 of 305)

Holes 2, 8, & 9 were cool enough all by themselves to make it worth another trip. I hope to be able to get in a round here every time I'm in Gatlinburg.

Nice Course to Play While on Vacation 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

My GPS took me right to the entrance of the parking lot using the coordinates off of the course main page on dgcoursereview. The course was about 5 miles outside of the main part of Gatlinburg. There was decent restroom facilities near hole 1, in the pavilion next to the practice basket. But beware, you will never be near this restroom facility until you are done playing and have hiked back to your car. The course featured very nice concrete tee pads and signs. I found most of the holes to be challenging and different enough to keep it fun. A few were pretty challenging to me, especially 2, an anhyzer in pretty thick woods on the side of a hill. The disc golf gods can be brutal on this hole if you hit a tree and roll down the hill. Finding errant discs shouldn't be a problem on the wooded holes as the undergrowth was minimal. Elevation was a factor on pretty much every hole. The park was well maintained.

Cons:

The course is woven around football practice fields and there were tons of people and kids out there conducting practice when I played. There are a few holes where you have to be wary of people on the walking path. There was one hole though, I think hole 4, where we did throw towards the crowd, but as long as the distance of your throw is under control, it wasn't an issue. The layout of the course is my biggest complaint (although I hate to complain as I don't see how it could have been avoided. I think they did the best with what they had, and I'm always just thankful for a course that plays well since no course at all sucks the most), but in a perfect world, the walk between 2 and 3 and from 9 back to the parking lot is cumbersome, but if you play a lot of disc golf walking shouldn't be an issue, but DO grab a map at hole 1. Otherwise I don't see how you could possibly find all the tees/baskets.

Other Thoughts:

I found holes 8 and 9 to be pretty unique and fun to play. I have never faced down (literally a hundred feet or so) a hole like 9. I would have loved to play the course again, but did not have time. I wouldn't advise driving from the interstate for the sole purpose of playing this course, but if you are in the area, definitely play this course as I found it to be very fun. It was a nice complement to all the other stuff we did while in the area.

Short. Fun. Not too Shabby. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Given the available space, this is an amazing course. I'm impressed with the the quality of the holes the designers managed to cram into an already tightly packed park. #8 is one of my favorite holes ever: over a valley into the woods via an uphill dogleg. #9 I actually went back and played a few extra times. #'s 1,2,6 - really all the holes except 7 - are very nicely designed.

This course makes excellent use of elevation changes and has some good risk/reward options. Clean restrooms, water, and trashcans are readily available. The signs and scorecards are excellent, and the park in general is well kept.

Cons:

However, as nice as the hole designs and ammenities are, the course has abysmal flow, and the cramped space means that you will be throwing around buildings, drives, and other park facilities. It feels at times like you are throwing through strangers' back yards. The walk between #2 and #3 is around 300 yards. The walk back to your car from #9 is probably twice that.

Other Thoughts:

Leave some extra time to get to the park. It isn't in the heart of Gatlinburg and took a little while to find.

This is a recreational, 9-hole course. It's not run-and-shoot, but pars come pretty easily. If you have a big arm, you'll probably find Mills Park confining. But, given that most folks are in Gatlinburg for vacation, most visitors to this course will be pleased with a fun round of disc golf that has just the right level of challenge. I'll play again when I return.
