Front 9 is great... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 27, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

All of the pros are for the front 9.

Course terrain is dessert with a river running through it. There aren't very many elevation changes, but the course still utilizes what it has very well. The river makes a great water hazard that goes throughout the front 9 and if you throw into it it's not too hard to get it back out. Good mix of long/short and left to right/right to left holes. Number one is a major risk/reward with a hard dogleg left with the river right in front of it. If your brave enough you can try a hard hyzer shot. Tee pads are in good condition and are fairly well marked. Not too much walking from basket to the next tee.

Cons:

Tee signs are bad, especially on the back nine. The front 9 tee signs have maps which are more confusing than having no sign at all. The back 9 signs are just no parking signs painted all black. Baskets are pretty worn, but will still catch ok. Tee pads on the back 9 are terrible and are barely even marked. Trash cans are nowhere to be found and the back nine is covered in glass. Navigation for the back 9 was absolutely terrible. I wasn't able to find 9 baskets and I think that some baskets were shared, but I don't know. No hole numbers anywhere on the back 9. Not on the tees not on the baskets (except one which I think was wrong) nowhere.

Other Thoughts:

The day I played, some of the locals said the river was way higher than it usually is, which increased the difficulty. It gets very hot here and there's hardly any shade, so don't even think about going here in the summer. The front nine was a great experience the back 9 was very frustrating which left me with the worst part of the course in my memory. It seemed like the back 9 was still a work in progress, so I hope that it gets improved. If the back 9 ever gets "finished" then I would definitely play this course again. This course could be a 4 out of 5 if the back 9 was better.

Craggy 18 holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Neatly tucked into a section of the secluded park Moeur/Papago DG course playes through some rugged terrain. High end plastic is a must as the entire course is extremely rocky. The front 9 is easily navigable with little to zero issues to which pin you're throwing to, the beat in signs have just enough info to guide you to the pin and next tee.

Fun mix of shots on the front with blind pin placements being the name of the game; moreso on the back 9. Apparently the back 9 is brand new so it doesn't have any signeage/tee boxes, but there are areas smoothed out and lined with rocks that are fairly obvious in the desert sand. There big "eff" off 10 ft. flags on top of most holes so you can see what you're shooting for as all the brush is about nipple to head high making hard to see many baskets from the tee. This forces you to really think about how you are going to get to the tee; it creates interesting lines on the back 9.

Back 9 plays pretty long with the mild elevation changes of +/- 20ft. of several holes. You have to air it out under control as a miss off the fairway is big trouble as it an access road through the middle of the course is OB. Need to be able to control you flights.

Cons:

No amenities outside of trashcans. Parking only for about 5 cars and right off a busy street seemingly in the middle of an industrial district; odd place for a DG course with this terrain. Glass galore, watch your step. The most abuse my discs have ever taken on a course! My shoes weren't too happy either.

Other Thoughts:

Interesting area for a course that looks like a desert landscape. For such a small area of the park the holes are extremely varied and utlize some creative pin positions tucked into every inch of the trouble created by landscape.

With some more TLC this course will only get better. Add some permanent tees and some better signage and you'll get more golfers which will only help the course. I will definitely play again when I visit.

Warren MI Disc Team 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Well first off being from Michigan the desert atmosphere is a great change
- Front 9 was east to navigate signs and pins were clearly marked with 10ft. flags
-Tees on front were maintained fairly well
-Back nine had some nice wide open shots

Cons:

-For AM players alot of difficult shots with minimal room for error
-Noise from air traffic was loud and constant
-Back nine was a death trap due to broken glass
-Grip lock is heavily punished on front nine holes

Other Thoughts:

Good course but i would not make it a constant player. But should be checked out by any player that would enjoy a challenge

Dream Beneath the Desert Scrub 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Unique Sonoran desert atmosphere
-Solitude
-Front nine requires requires lots of different throws around vegetation and to avoid an intermittent canal/creek; the back nine mostly requires big throws through a jagged wash
-Many drives require controlled glide and fade rather than just power
-Very challenging

Cons:

-Very rough terrain. Back nine seems like old glass dump (don't trip!).
-Champion and Z-plastic recommended, but this plastic can be tough to throw (especially if not broken in) as it is not always possible to release a disc low and nose down
-Bushes and obstacles may result in absurdly difficult approaches
-Fishing discs out of the canal is rough without a Labrador
-The back nine is a work in progress at the present time, with temporary tee pads. As such it can be tough to orient around without a local's advice.
-This place gets hot!!! Don't even bother playing it June-Aug.
-No real bathrooms
-Not a good place to throw multiple discs while practicing (as discs can be tough to find)

Other Thoughts:

Like Buffalo Ridge, Moeur Park offers a very unique desert golf experience. The scrubby nature of the course can be frustrating, but the course is appreciated by locals because it is a bit more technical than some of the park courses in the area. The back nine makes a nice addition to the course, as it is more open, offering a nice opportunity to let loose. Nevertheless, discs still end up in all sorts of tough situations on the back nine, so be careful where you throw it.

The angle of release can be a bit different at this course (due to the bushes), making it difficult to throw drivers or approach shots low and hard. Discs with great glide are good for this place, but sometimes the best discs for this course are not made of a plastic that will survive long. For example, Discraft ESP is great here, but will get cut up eventually.

This course is sort of a diamond in the rough. Some improvement (such as tee pads on the back nine, better facilities, and some improved landscaping) would elevate this to a four star course.

The difficulty of playing in the desert scrub keeps some away, but helps to make this a favorite for local disc heads.

Helpful Hints:

The canyon slope comes into play on many holes and controlling the fade on big hyzer shots can be a challenge. Try a hyzer flip or s-turn when driving along the canyon slope, but be careful not to yank it OB.

Hole #1: for RHBH requires a spike hyzer; aim directly over the tree tops to the left, in front of the tee box...remember to keep a hyzer angle on the disc or it will sail over the canal.

A Tale of Two Courses 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 3, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really liked the front 9 of this course. A lot of neat technical holes, good signage, good tees. Front side of this course would easily rate a 3.5, but the back side unfortunately slams it overall.

Cons:

The back 9 of this course is what I have rated so as not to give this stellar image of the course. The back 9 are ROUGH.... blind targets, hard to find tees, no signs, shared targets in many cases..... this is a rough course. Granted... I am a newbie, and I wasn't going with anyone who knew the course, but by the time we were done with the back 9 - my girlfriend hated me, we were both frustrated, and basically swore to never play it again.... at least not for a long time.... so that was the experience.

Other Thoughts:

please keep in mind that I am a total newbie... I do not throw as well as I would like yet, and even getting a par on an easy hole is not a guarantee.... that said, the new back 9 on this course is VERY rough.... the rating on the front nine would easily be a 3.5.

Desert blind and wet. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Comments are only for front 9.
Good signage. Great terrain. Nice use of avail space. many holes are blind... not a bad thing, flags on some baskets help. Love the back 9 here. Played the back 9 6 times on recent visit. Te pads are now clearly deleniated. Signs, although blank at most tees. Hole trails are developing. Kudos to those who have put time and effort into the back 9 here.

Cons:

Just a bit tough to locate... need to drive north of Curry to Operations drive. Quite a lot of trash strewn about here... 9 plays close to road. 2 discs landed in water along right side on first 5 holes... was able to fish 'em out with sticks. beginners need to be cautious here as water is way close to all 5 opening holes... Blind holes are tough for first time playing the course... back 9 ... some day they will put in permanent pads and actual marker signs and this course will rock.

Other Thoughts:

Amazing how much psychological impact the presence of water makes on game play. water in the area = lower accuracy of shots... the mind game... fascinating... I prefer the back 9 here. Also played a mini game of ace race with the baskets for 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, practice. Shoot from basket to basket with a middie or a putter. Great practice as all baskets are visible form all other baskets and this makes for a great shoot around. Any one basket to any of the others makes for some fun, alt, short holes.

Cons:

Back nine was a little lackluster, but still more interesting than the park&lake courses.

Cons:

Back 9 is a little hard to follow without someone who has played it before. Also back 9 is a little redundant.

This course needs moeur 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course does offer some larger "trees" and a little water to increase the difficulty, not of which is generally found on other courses in the area. Baskets are nicely placed around curves or tucked into the trees to give more of a challenge. Though not major, there is some elevation changes found here. The first few holes are tricky due to the stream on the right that is a little tough to get your disc out of. Throw a slight hyzer and you will be fine.

Cons:

Another example of the city giving whatever land they have leftover to build a disc golf course. Tightly packed in a small area, some of the fairways are certianly close to each other, especially for hole 5 and 6. A slightly to sharp of a hyzer here could easily hit someone on the teepad of 6. The course just looks bad, trash all around, esp. glass. The tee signs are ok, on the front 9 that is because the back 9 doesn't have any. Navigation problems quickly become apparent. The concrete teepads were nice on the front 9, the back 9 doesn't have any though there certainly was some effort to creat nice level dirt/gravel ones. Very confusing on the back 9 to know what basket you are throwing at, stand on the teepad and there could easily be 3-4 possible targets. Not the most scenic of courses in the area and it is rather close to the airport so planes will be flying low over your head the whole time. There is only a small parking lot at the start of the course but I have never seen anyone else on this course when I played. If it were to get busy, parking would definately be an issue.

Other Thoughts:

A disc golf course is better then no disc golf course. Unfortunely there was some effort placed into this course at one time, but it looks somewhat neglected and run down. Certianly there are some better courses in the area that are a little cleaner and have a better flow to them. Despite the rough appearance of this course, it does offer some rather challenging throws. I come here to practice my accuracy and improve my game, not for the scenery.

A Different Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 16, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good Layout For the Land
Good Variety of Shot Types Required
Great Use of Natural Objects
Great Scenery
Concrete Tees On Front Nine

Cons:

Hard to Navigate
Course Is Hard To Find
Many Blind Holes
Back Nine is Lacking After Playing the Front Nine
Back Nine Doesn't Have Concrete Tee Pads
No Benches or Trash Cans
No Bathrooms

Other Thoughts:

The course can be hard to locate the first time you visit. Parking is located at the Northeast corner of Mills Avenue and West Operations Drive. From the parking lot, cross over Operations Drive to get to the first tee.

The first few holes play along the small watershed. A lot of times it is dried up, but when it has water it can add a lot of challenge to the course. Course is very technical and isn't a great course for beginners, discs can be easily lost in the underbrush, and a spotter would be ideal on this course. Course is mostly flat, but they did make good use of what elevation changes they have.

Navigation of the course can be very difficult. A lot of the baskets are blind and there is a lot of brush and other vegetation that make even finding the tees hard. If you are planning on playing this I would definitely check out the maps on the links page to get a good idea of the layout.

The front nine play on the south side of Opertations Drive and the back nine are on the North side. After hole 9 you will cross the road and the tee pad for 10 is at the edge of the road near the parking lot. The back nine are even more difficult to navigate, the course is flat and has a lot of underbrush so spotting anything can be hard. As I stated make sure you check out the map.

Overall this course has some great holes and the terrain is unlike anything that I ever played before. It can obviously get very hot and dry so bring plenty of water and wear very comfortable shoes. Course also has little to no shade so you will want to dress appropriately and/or bring plenty of sunscreen. Also there weren't a lot of trash cans so be sure to take your trash out with you. The course could use a couple updates, some new signs would be very helpful and some markers indicating where the next tee is would be very helpful.

Overall I enjoyed this course a lot and look forward to getting back to the Phoenix area to play this one again and check out some of the other courses in the area.

*Front nine only* 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 30, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is one of the most unique courses I've played. It is set in a small patch of desert, with a small wash running through most of the course. The fairways are very well defined, and the rough can be brutal. The combination of various desert plants and the wash which can have a good amount of water in it make for lots of risk/reward decisions that really make you think about every shot.

The front nine requires lots of different kinds of shots, and punishes inaccurate throws. There was great variety, especially if both sets of baskets are played. Some of the pin placements are very cool, especially the island hole where putting long or short means you're getting wet. There were a number of blind shots, which really added to the difficulty level of the course, and made it even more interesting.

There are nice concrete tee pads on the front nine, and tee signs showing both pin positions on each hole. The dual baskets on the front nine was a cool way to make 18 holes before the back nine was added.

Cons:

The course was not the easiest to follow the first time through, and could have used a little bit of work on the signage. This isn't really a con, but if you have cheaper plastic discs that you don't want beat up, leave them at home as most of the course is hard dirt and rocks.

There were a few places where going ob across the creek pretty much meant your disc was lost. This wasn't a major deal, but made the course a little less beginner friendly. Similarly, the number of blind shots, while fun, mean that it is very beneficial to play in a group where someone can walk ahead and spot for the group.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed playing this course, and am really looking forward to going back and playing the new 9. The course offers a lot of cool and unique challenges, and is not an easy course for any skill level.

If you are in the Phoenix area, this course is certainly worth the trip. Just make sure you bring good shoes, tough discs, and lots of water, and this course is a great experience!

Natural Setting Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 18, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Challenging. You will have to be very creative with your shots to succeed on this course. Water hazards on the first 5 or so on the front 9 will force you to play for control over power.
Really close to Shelly Sharpe and completely different from Shelly too. If you have 27 holes in you, try both together for great variety.

Cons:

Many blind shots, first time players will probably have to go forward and scout holes before throwing. Some of the densest underbrush in Phoenix.very easy to watch a disc enter the rough and then NEVER find it again. ever.

Other Thoughts:

Play with bright discs. Play with sturdy plastics (Discraft ESP, Innova Champion, or Innova Star).
If you are in a group, consider sending someone forward to stand at the doglegs to spot discs (be careful of course). Water isn't that deep but can be a pain to recover.
Woe to the person who puts it on the other side of the creek. Lots of thorns and harsh plants. A really fun course, you are gonna be thirsty. As of November or so of 2008 the "back" course was still largely unfinished and hard to navigate but the basket placements look really fun because of the good use of the landscape. If you are in from out of state - This is a native desert-environment course and it will be a treat and a change of pace. If you like this course - try Buffalo Ridge. They are the closest cousins in the Phoenix area.

Cons:

Discs will get scuffed here as will your shins (protect your legs), some of the signage could be better, sometimes a bit confusing finding your way around.

We played this one in '07, and again in '08. We were pleasantly surprised to see that a lot of cleaning up had taken place in the last year, and we had a much more enjoyable time here. Technically Wonderful 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 1, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This Course twists and turns back and forth. You will need left turns right turns, downhill, and especially tomahawks to play this course. Tons of signature holes:
#1 Hard left hyser around tree, followed by river on right
#2- Go around power pole, with river & waterfall just right of fairway and pin
#4- a downhill shot under overhanging trees, bounded by river on right. pin is on a small island in midstream, blocked by two gnarly trees.
#6 Shoot up and over brush-covered hill to a pin on back left side of hill, backed by a gulch.

The river runs along the front nine, and adds a nice OB element to many of the holes.

The holes on this course are very challenging. Birdies are hard to come by on this course for all but the biggest arms and most accurate, and none of the holes are "ace runs." This course will make you earn every par.

UPDATE: The new back nine across the road is a bit different. Still pretty rough (half the tees are rubber, the rest dirt, no maps or numbered baskets) it is also fun and plays along rocky hillsides sloping down to a dried gully running through in the middle. Still possible to lose a disc here, but without the river or the jungle across the river in play, you are much safer here than on the disc-hungry front nine.

Like the front nine, the back nine is dotted with the scruffy desert trees and cactus that force careful shot selection, and fairways covered with waist-high shrubs that force you to keep a bit of separation between disc and ground.

Also like the front nine, the back nine has many very interesting pin positions. However, in this case, the challenges presented are very different from the front. Overall, the back nine has more elevation in play than the front nine, mainly from the gully that is used creatively by the designers on several holes. One hole forces you to shoot across it to a pin up on the other side, where shooting short, long, or to the right of the pin will probably result in a rollaway down into it, and a tough followup. Another has the pin right on the gully edge, so overshooting at all means a 12 ft drop straight down, and a nasty UPshot.

The back nine actually has many holes that make for delightfully difficult putts. On hole 10, you shoot downhill to a blind basket nestled in a group of scrubby desert trees. Like on hole 7, it can be a bit tricky to find a way to drop the disc into the tree cocoon for a clear putt. Failing that, a good drive off the tee will still probably leave you shooting through a gap in them. One basket is even mounted to the top of a 5ft tall boulder.

Overall, the front nine is probably a little better than the back nine, partly because of the concrete tees, signs, numbered baskets, etc, but they are both distinct and good. The front nine by itself is a solid 3.5 course, and the new nine holes only add to it. When the amenities on the back nine are equal to the front nine, this will truly be a gem of a course.

Very interesting, challenging and fun, if you have a few different shot types to choose from. Can be frustrating the first (and second) time you play it, but grows on you the more you keep coming back.

Cons:

(On front nine) The alternate and rotating pins, plus the very generic hole maps at each teebox make it frustrating to find the right pin the first few times you play the front nine. Really needs signposts with a course map of each nine near holes 1 and 10 to clear up some confusion.

The back nine is much worse in this manner. Pins arent numbered, and there are rubber/dirt teeboxes with no maps, which means its very hard to know which pin belongs to which hole for the time being, much less see the pins through all the brush.

However, as the rough conditions on the back nine are mainly due to foot-dragging on some committee or other that has to approve improvements to the course, hopefully it's only a matter of time before things change. On the bright side, the local DG community wants very much to put in concrete tees and signs, and is just waiting on the green light from above to proceed.

The dusty rocky nature of this course will scuff your discs up, so be ready. The thorny trees and bushes will scuff you, so be mindful of that too, and practice your thumbers. Also, orange and white are the hardest color discs to find on this desert course, so try to throw other colors (even green). This course is frustrating when your game is off, and the slope of the land, combined with the wind, both work to blow your discs into the small river that runs through the front nine. Not a place for beginners.

WARNING
!!!Hole #4- Watch for the bamboo thicket (under the sign that says "Jurassic") to the right of the fairway. It will swallow your discs, even if you trudge through the water after them. !!!!!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts:

Your discs WILL go in the shallow river, so be ready to get wet if you play here. Wear a swimsuit and old beater shoes that can get wet, and you will love this course. Chilly stream feels great on hot days. Also, be mindful of what color plastic you throw. You will spend along time looking for white discs (i have lost two white ones on same hole in one round before) so just don't throw them. Stick to red, purple, colors like that if you have a choice and don't want to lose discs

Even with numbered baskets on the front nine, this whole course is very non-First Timer Friendly (FTF). The best way to play it, and basically the only way to play the back nine, is to stick with a local who knows the course.

The first time I played this course (back when it was just nine), I almost gave up in frustration by hole 6, since I had trouble figuring out which basket I was supposed to shoot at. However, I kept coming back, and I'm so glad I did. Give it a few tries and you will be too.
