Potential is there, but unfulfilled. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 15, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some beautiful terrain.
Well-groomed fairways.

Cons:

Terrible flow from hole to hole.
Virtually no signage or maps.
Baskets could use numbers, and a [bright] paint job.
No tee pads, just rather dilapidated wood planks to mark the end of tee area.

Other Thoughts:

I *want* to like this course. For a nice little 9, it's fine. Fun, tight, and technical slightly wooded play. Great for working on touch putter drives. But navigating the course is a major challenge, mostly due to a near complete lack of signage. There are a number of walking paths through the wooded area, so with the lack of flow, I ended up just wandering around between holes trying to find the tiny (if at all present) 4x4/circle tee signs. The baskets are pretty old Mach 5s, and with no paint or hole number indicators, make a first time through the course rather tough. As a previous reviewer noted, simply having a "next tee" hanger pointing towards the general direction of the next hole would be an easy upgrade.

That being said, it's a fun par 3 9-hole. The fairways were fair, and, at least when I played, really well kept. The roughs are rather rough. Think: if you're not within 10-ft of the fairway, you're probably going home one disc lighter - keep it safe, and everything is really reachable. I mostly played putter shots off the tee and kept everything in control.

I think with a bright paint job on the baskets, some moderate tee work (even just some turf tees would be a huge upgrade) and better signage/navigation, this could be a fun community course. As is, it's not really worth the drive out from PGH.

I knew what to expect and was not let down 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Anytime you can find a course tucked into a city park with easy access, it is a pro. This is the closest course to my house and the first one I have played. As of late, I have been mainly just playing at Schenley, so I may be a little spoiled with very open holes. My home course used to be the course at Cal U of PA and that is a very tough course to play due to the weed growth. I would put the difficulty of this one in between those two.

Cons:

Only 9 holes. Easy fix, play it twice. The last hole puts you right out to the parking lot as a nice loop so it is barely even a walk to get back to hole 1.

From what I see, most people have made this complaint: Navigation is very tough without a map. After the first three holes, we had to find a map online to figure out where to go. See "other comments" for some navigation help.

It is pretty hilly if you arent expecting it, though that isn't a bad thing. Definitely provides a nice little walk for you.

It will be rare for me to head back there to play again but I'm sure I will just for fun with friends.

If you have trouble really aiming your shot, this might not be the course for you to start on. While some of the holes are pretty easy to par or birdy, they go down some narrow pathways. I lost a disc and so did my buddy. The "rough" is VERY rough. Keep it on the fairway and you are fine.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1: Right at the edge of the parking lot by the guard rail. There is a little post there explaining the rules of disc golf.

Hole 2: Just up the hill from the first basket. You will see a similar sign with the course layout on it.

Hole 3: Not easily seen from hole 2's basket. Go up the hill and find the small path to the next walkway. There will be another post.

Hole 4: My best way to describe this is to go to the corner of the soccer field nearest the last basket. On the ground will be a very embedded 4x4 marker. There is no post for this hole.

Hole 5: You should be able to see the post from hole 4. The basket has a long flag on top of it. Shoot for that.

Hole 6: Again, you should be able to see the post for this from hole 5.

Hole 7: *NOT SEEN FROM HOLE 6* You will see a cutaway in the trees that follows up a hill. Go into there and locate the white rope. This will help you climb the hill to the tee box for 7.

Hole 8: From the basket of 7, go up the hill to the right. a new post was placed right at the edge by the advanced tee. This hole could potentially be a Par 3, 4, or 5 depending on basket placement and where you throw from. with a good throw to start, you could very easily eagle from the advanced tee.

Hole 9: Tee should be seen from hole 8 basket. The hole is not visible. We found it on accident. There will be a straightaway in front of you. If you throw it about halfway, the hole is down in the woods off the trail. There is a flag on top of it but if you do not know where to look, it does not stand out much.

From hole 9, just follow the small path down the hill and you will end up right back at the parking lot. Hope this helps some people out.

Good for Practice 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you're in the immediate area, Monroeville Park is a good place to practice your tosses. You'll have the opportunity to throw a lot of mid-range shots, including different angles and curves.

The fairways are well-maintained, and the baskets are in pretty good condition (aside from #8, which is crooked). The fairways are all pretty open and well-defined.

Hole #9 is kind of cool. And immediate dogleg right, then shooting into the woods.

For such a small park, you don't need to worry about throwing into other park-goers and picnickers. Space is pretty well-used.

It's never really crowded. I've only ever seen a couple other groups playing there at the same time I was.

Cons:

The worst part of playing here is the poison ivy, especially in the summer. If you throw into the rough on most of the holes, you're going to get a rash. It does force you to learn to shoot really straight (especially on #2 and #7), but it is pretty irritating knowing you have very little wiggle room.

Some of the tees are difficult to find the first time, as they're just wooden planks in the ground. You can pick up a map at the first tee, though, and then you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Other Thoughts:

Really, it's nothing special. Like I said, it's great for practice if you're in the area. The roughs can get pretty dense, but that also means you might end up finding a couple discs.

If you go when people aren't using the baseball or soccer fields, they're decent places to work on airing out some drives.

Don't make a long trip out to Monroeville Park; but if you live nearby, the course is a nice place to get in 30-40 minutes of practice.

Different Doctrine 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Two tee locations/pin positions per hole. The map, when combined with the vertical posts which held the tee signs, made navigation fairly easy. The long tees were very effective in making each hole quite different than from the shorts, adding not just length, but also the type of turning required, or window to hit.

Cons:

The tee signs themselves were faded and useless. The tee locations were natural and marked by narrow in-ground boards, some a bit difficult to find (#4 long is even with the sideline of the soccer field, NOT the fence). Vertical posts missing on 2, 4, and 8 (map should help orient you). Uphill walk from 6 to 7 wouldn't be fun if wet.

Other Thoughts:

Course plays in a counter-clockwise direction in the fragmented open space located behind baseball/soccer fields and a rim of woods. Makes very good use of the limited amount of space and elevation available, and stays well away from other park users. Most holes, other than right-turning #1 and left-turning #8, require fairly straight shots off the tee into open space, but each hole will also have a challenge at some point along the way - trees near the basket, windows at the early/midpoint, small rises to throw up-n-over, fast green, etc.

Was pleasantly surprised at the difference between the two tee locations, since many alt-tees in small parks simply add 50' or so of length, but do not make much of a difference in the actual look of the hole.

2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice layout around soccer and baseball fields. Mach 5 baskets. Bathrooms and water fountain.

Cons:

Not too challenging. No concrete tees. Signage is faded, thus making it hard to find tee boards the first time through.

Other Thoughts:

Nice 9 hole course. 1 - 6 are mostly wide open with slight elevation changes. # 3 is a nice straight "tunnel" hole with trees and weeds lining the fairway. Holes 7 - 9 were the nicest as they are in a more wooded area of the park. Great place to work on your game without killing your confidence.

A good find in the greater Pittsburgh area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 8, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course includes a nice map that helps you navigate from hole to hole. Bathroom facilities are also a plus. Most of the holes are in open fields with few hazards nearby. If you like lots of trees and challenges, this course probably isn't for you. Nevertheless, it's a good place to practice a lot of midrange techniques. It's also a very quick 9 holes, which is good if you're in a hurry.

Cons:

The tees -- probably installed with the course in 1988 -- are pretty hard to find at times. The last hole, in my opinion, is kind of anti-climactic because all you have to do is throw into the woods.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, I had a good time at this course. I personally like courses like these because I'm just starting out. As such, this is a nice place to practice the fundamentals. Few hazards, open areas, and easy pars are all good confidence builders for those starting out. I tried to review the course in a way that would help people more experienced than myself. Try some others around the area if you want more difficulty.

Decent course if you live nearby 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 24, 2006 Played the course:never

Pros:

As a small, municipal beginner course goes, this is one of the nicer ones. Some actual thought seemed to go into the pin layout, and as such it plays as something more than a simplistic "pitch and putt". Most of the holes have well defined fairways, the majority of which favor lefties, but the last two favor the right handers to balance it out.

Cons:

The par is outdated; play every hole as a 3. Many of the original tee signs have eroded away, and the tee boards in the ground can be hard to locate and get muddy at times. Almost all shots that miss the fairways end up in the thorns.

Other Thoughts:

Nobody will or should travel across the country to play Monroeville park. However anyone drawn to this newly expanded park who takes the time to check out what disc golf is about should find a nice place to learn the sport.
