The New And Improved Mossy Rock Disc Golf Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played and reviewed the old Mossy Rock Course way back in 2008. At that time I rated it a 2.5 with the caveat that this was a wonderful piece of land with so much growth potential. Eleven years later and some of that potential has been reached. I don't exactly know the story of this property but it is so lovely and has such a peaceful vibe to it. It really is one of those exquisite walks in the woods that I so dearly love about disc golf.

The property is very hilly with mostly a thick forest of mature trees. There are some natural grassy fairways to work with while a couple of holes play up and down some old roads which are now grassy. Quite a few of the Discatchers ( like # 18) are set up in wooded embankments just beyond the fairways. There is a nice mix of hole lengths with two or three Ace runs of under 200' and probably five holes reaching out to around 350'. Also, a nice variety of hyser, anhysers and straight on holes, uphills and downhills, a couple of over a gully and up a hill throws and blind basket placements versus clearly visible ones.

The baskets are yellow Discatchers w/numbers, easy to spot in this thick forest. The signs are simple little round, wooden ones which just give the hole #, distance and possible basket placement. There are next tee signs and also some pink ribbons to guide you from hole to hole. Even with these and my wife walking the course with me, we had to backtrack and consult the on-line map quite a bit. The pads are natural soil with some gravel mixed in. Currently, I was very comfortable with them but I can see them getting pretty rough with use. Also, they don't have a front board so players will continue to extend them. If concrete is not in the near future plans, I would like to see a heavy duty (RR tie) front board added.

There has been some engineering done here with steps built with either concrete blocks or wood 1" x 8" boards. But there are plenty of other places where steps are needed to help players get up some of these hillsides, especially when it's wet and also to prevent some ugly future erosion issues.

The course will provide you with a nice workout, not quite an extreme type of workout like a ski course, but lots of up and down climbing over terrain that can be somewhat treacherous. And you can find some gnarly rough in places. The up and down terrain and trees are the challenges here. With no holes over 350', the course plays at probably a difficult rec to more advanced level.

Cons:

Although so much work has already been done, there is still so much more to be done here.

Probably, the first thing that needs to be addressed are the tee pads. Concrete or patio block pads like at Cornwall Park would be a great addition.

There are many places where stairs need to be engineered in. In wet times, this course could be quite slippery and treacherous.

I'm concerned with the current signage because it's not heavy-duty vandal proof. I hope because of its remote location, it won't see the vandalism but the round tee signs and small next tee signs would be easy targets for that element of our society that just loves destroying things.

At one point, some needed stairs were constructed with 1-inch thick boards. Some are already starting to come apart. I'm sorry but these stairs have to be constructed of studier materials.

The building by the street and the old restrooms are eyesores, covered with graffiti.

Other Thoughts:

I know it's easy for a reviewer like me to suggest improvements like stairs and better tee pads are needed. I realize both the expense and labor that are required to get these needed improvements implemented. I wish the local club well in their endeavors to continue to improve upon this site. It's a special piece of property, well worth the effort.

I'll give the course a solid 3.0 rating now and will certainly be willing to improve that rating as improvements are made. I'll look toward to coming back and playing here again.
