Pros:
I played here during a steady downpour and there were actually two other fools out in the deluge. The Martha McLean Anza Narrows is a wonderful, hilly piece of land for a course. You are seldom throwing on level ground as there are lots of interesting valleys and hills to battle. This must have been a fun piece of land for the designers to have worked with.
The course has the tallest tee signs I've ever seen. The tops are about 8' high. As it was wet, I would have liked to hang my bag over them but I couldn't reach the top. These tall metal poles would be great to insert some bag holders but you probably don't usually need to hang your bag here. The tees are nice extra long concrete. The baskets are pretty blue Models by Veterans. The baskets have these nifty little, plastic next arrows markers which snap into the baskets rungs. I hadn't seen them before and I liked and appreciated them .
The course plays at probably an intermediate level with some tougher uphill throws and a very cool tunnel throw on # 15 where your clearance isn't more than about 8 feet. I also thought # 13 and # 4 were both very pretty holes. 17 is is a fun 315' open downhill run. I think # 18 is possibly the most challenging hole on the course. It's 305' uphill with a 40' wide double Mando between two trees about 200' out. I really didn't like # 10 and it's 395' playing wide open.
I liked the fact that the designers have kept the concept simple with only one basket position. This does make navigating easier.
Cons:
There's not much to dislike about The Narrows. It's set in a lovely park, is well designed and is intuitive to navigate. I guess there was some evidence of junk and some homeless garbage but only on a couple of holes.
Not a fan of # 10.
No staging area or course map/sign.
No benches and no bag holders on these tall poles.
Other Thoughts:
This would be a wonderful course to enjoy as your home course. I think it would be fair for most players and everyone will love it's delicious elevation. Rec players would still have fun as it's not too long or challenging for them while better players could work to shoot better scores.
