I’m on a pilgrimage to see a moose. Praise Marty Moose!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 9, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A pleasant course winding through a nice park. With the course running alongside a running trail and lake, felt like I wasn't being productive enough.
- This was a perfectly decent 9-hole course. There's nothing spectacular about it; however, there's also nothing bad. Nine straight nice layouts.
- I played 16 new courses in the span of the month. I've written reviews for most of them. This is the only course where there were very few discernible aspects to it. In other words, not a lot of variety.
- Course either has wooded holes, open holes with tree lined fairways, open holes to wooded baskets, or wooded fairways to open baskets.
- #2 was a nice, quasi-gauntlet fairway. Plenty wide that you can be aggressive making a run to the basket.
- #6 was the best, most scenic hole on the course. The trail runs the right side of the fairway and woods run the entire left side. Listed at 240 feet, the basket is tucked around a slight dogleg left with a tree protecting the most direct line. You've got to throw tight and low to the left or a much wider sweeping shot if you're playing out to the right. Or, just go over top of the tree, but don't get too much air or you're fading into the woods.
- #9 was a tough blind tee shot around a sharper dogleg left. From there, you're throwing to a basket protected by trees on three sides.
- In general, you've got to throw quality tee shots to see birdie chances. Barring a wicked bounce deep into the woods, most holes are easy enough that you'll salvage par. It's the type of course you could play multiple times and be birdieing different holes each round.

Cons:

The biggest challenge here was parking. The parking lot in the park was permit only. The parking on the main road was 'permit only' on weekdays. I just parked there, knowing I'd be gone in 30 minutes. Not that this is my recommendation for others.
- Signage needs to be improved. Without UDisc's Interactve map, it might be a challenge to find the first tee. Then, from #3 to 4, #5 to 6, and #8 to 9, it's going to be a challenge to find the next tee without help.
- A couple holes have low ceilings due to low hanging branches. You're not seeing that many tight lines on most regulation courses.
- A couple of blind tee shots that may be potential issues. All it takes is some setting up a blanket in the grass alongside the trail to suddenly be in your fairway.
- Despite the variety of doglegs, wooded and open holes, etc., the universal safe shot on every one of these holes is to throw a putter or mid-range disc straight 225 - 250 feet. You do that and you've got 9 straight easy par 3s at worst. They tried to make a lot of variety, but the variety all had too much of a common element.

Other Thoughts:

This was a perfectly suitable 9-hole course. It's definitely better than most 9-hole courses I've played. But, it kind of had a 'ho-hum' feel to it. It never got out of second, or third, gear the entire course.
- It had lots of vibes of Holmes Park in Greenville, SC. Also, some Wellspring in Burlington vibes.
- I'd have combined #4 and 5 and made one longer hole. Then found room on the way back to add a final hole. As it is, after finishing #9, you're walking backwards past the entire lengths of holes 2 and 1.
- It's a good course; it's just not very noteworthy. I played this one right before playing the dreadful Scottish Hill. For all the wrong reasons, I'll remember Scottish Hills more than I'll ever remember here.
- Good for what it is. If you're close, it's a fine home course. If you're from out of the area, there are much better courses to play before this one.

Decent short course could use some work 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 16, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Reasonably good place to introduce people to the sport due to the short distances.
+ Attractive wooded lakeside setting.
+ A mix of open and wooded shots.
+ Not heavily played, so you won't have much competition.
+ In spite of the short distances, the course isn't particularly easy (with the exception of a few holes), so will still offer some challenge for more experienced players.

Cons:

- Course maintenance is spotty. Many holes are seriously overgrown and don't resemble their original design.
- Drainage problems on a couple holes.
- Signs have disappeared and course navigation is not intuitive.
- Not much imagination or variety in hole design.
- Only a few parking spots near the course, and they all require a permit or fee.
- Not much opportunity to throw long drives. A putter and midrange are really all you need. This could be a plus depending on what you are looking for.

Other Thoughts:

This is hardly a destination course, but if you are in the area and have time (or Kentwood is too crowded), it is worth a play. It is a nice piece of property and the course could be better than it is, but it is still possible to have a fun round if you aren't expecting too much.

Could be so much Better 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good baskets, signage on each hole, small but adequate concrete tee pads.
Little used part of this next generation campus. There is a greenway through the course, but I don't remember any interferences.
There are a couple of good challenging holes, #2, #3, #6.
Would be a quick play if you worked or lived on campus.

Cons:

Very limited parking, unless you have the proper permit, M-F.
A couple of bad holes, #4 and #8 barely have a fairway, pretty much just throw and pray.
#9 use to have two lines, hyzer and anny, to the basket. But now the tee is pointed at a large tree and you have to throw in an odd direction.

Other Thoughts:

Unfortunately, there are only nine holes on this large, varied terrain campus that has been developing over the last several years. NC State is a great DG school (the nearby Kentwood is always crowded), so it's a shame they couldn't make this a longer, more challenging 18 holer.

Basic Nine-Hole Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 2, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I've played these nine holes twice, once in the early summer and once in late fall. It either plays better in the winter or they've just upped the maintenance level because two of the holes were much better the second time around. 1 is actually playable with the tall grass out of the picture. 5, which in teh summer had no line to speak of, suddenly has a nice little path to the basket.

A few trees were planted which helped block the cheat route to the basket on 4. I'm not sure if they were planted for golf purposes, but either way, they helped.

The best hole here is definitely 2. A short tunnel with a hill in the middle, it forces your shot into quite a narrow window and hold that path for a decent amount of distance. It's fun.

Cons:

But of the nine holes, there are too many bad layouts to rate this course highly. There is one hole(4) that the ideal shot lands in what I assume is casual water. There is one hole(9) in which the tee is pointing directly into the woods. And there is one hole in which the angle desired is just impossible for a disc to travel.(6)

But mostly, the holes are just too short overall and too lacking in challenge. It's a nice course on a college campus that might introduce a few people to the game, but that's about it.

If you are in the area... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 11, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great baskets. Great signs. Great tee pads. Very easy to navigate.

Cons:

Very poorly designed. Very littered. Rough off the fairways

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 - Might be the best hole in Raleigh. It's stunning when you see it in person.
Hole 2 - A really good short open hole. Great Pin placement
Hole 3 - Might be the worst hole in Raleigh. So many things wrong with it.
Hole 4 - A hole that isn't great, but isn't terrible. I like the amount of options you have off the tee, but it's mainly because none of them are good options
Hole 5 - A great hole. I love holes that you have to throw hyzer or annhzyer, but still control the disc as opposed to just letting it crash
Hole 6 - A cool little short hole. Good pin placement
Hole 7 - Yeah, not sure what we were thinking here
Hole 8 - Not the worst, but definently not a good hole.
Hole 9 - Cool finishing hole. Really like the pin placement.

Overall, this course is ruined by how bad of a hole holes 3 and 7 are. Simple changes could have been made to avoid these. Pretty obvious it was set up by someone at the university who had played a few times with his buddies. If you are in the area, it's quick and easy to play by yourself. But don't make a special trip to play it.

Not too bad 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 3, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Decent course, good mix of open and tight shots.

Cons:

Very briery on a few holes, not a lot of length.

Other Thoughts:

Crying shame that NCSU (an engineering school/design school)
1. only has 9 holes
2. has more land than who knows to build a dg course
3. Could easily incorporate a dg project into some kind of college credit/extra curricular

I agree except the signage 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good for beginners. Short holes but do keep an eye out as there are lots of vegetation-ators to loose it. Right off of Hwy 40 at Lake Wheeler which is clost to my house. Good signage, but I still got lost and skipped a hole and I had a map! And parking is very light. There's no place close to park if the small lot is full.

Cons:

Bugs - tics, chiggers. There are dear clustered in the area since the centenial campus golf course took up most of the land boardered by major roads. Only 9 holes too.

Other Thoughts:

I'd say play before the vegetation gets to bad and stop by to play catch after.

Has Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- This course is on a great piece of property right beside a beautiful lake.
- Nice teepads and signs on every whole. The tees even have the number of the hole on them which I thought was a really nice feature.
- Good course to go out and practice driving with your putter
- Only 9 holes in close proximity so can get in a last minute round pretty quickly
- Baskets are all new and very nice.

Cons:

- This is not a very challenging course which can make it a bit dull for multiple plays for people that aren't just starting to play.
- No trashcans on the course. This has sadly led to crushed beer cans at almost every teepad. Also was a drag when my dog pooped on hole #2 and I got to carry it around for the rest of the round.
- There are also no benches. This isn't a huge problem since the course is very short but it would be nice to have somewhere to sit between holes and record your score or grab a drink.
- Not much parking and is restricted during the week.

Other Thoughts:

This course looks great but outside of that it just doesn't deliver. As an NC State I really wanted to enjoy the course I just found it pretty dull for the most part. Sure it is good if you want to work on your mid-range or putter throwing but outside of that it just doesn't deliver.

Playable in the Winter 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Good signage, NC State themed signs that work very well, look professional
+ A few challenging holes stand out, and make this a more technical par 3 experience than Kentwood.
+ Pins are in GREAT condition

Cons:

- You have a huge chance of losing your disc. Tall grass, catchy/thorny trees, and kudsu during the summer all contribute to a scary experience. Even on good throws, keep an eye on it.
- Some of the tees are not located in good positions, which clearly shows that the disc golf community did not have much imput in this course
- Thorns everywhere, you are going to get caught in them at some point. Period.

Other Thoughts:

In whole, this course is one of the worst courses in the area, but the area has some pretty good courses. When I played this in August, with the summer overgrowth, the course was bordering on unplayable, due to kudsu and extremely dense boundary zones that completely ate discs. In December however, I tried it again, and found a more positive experience. Yes, some of the holes are tight like insanity, and if you miss the fairway, you will have an impossible par attempt, but it is doable. Give this course a try if you are in the area/ don't have time to go for a full 18, but if you can only play a few courses in the area, STAY AWAY, and see what else Raleigh has to offer.
