Pros:

Nevin was the most challenging, yet enjoyable, course I played in Charlotte. I played nearby Hornet's Nest the prior day and was pretty underwhelmed. At least expectationwise. Nevin delivered and then some.

The course is now 19 holes. Somewhere around hole 10, if not 10 itself, a new hole was added. The more the merrier though. This is quintessential Charlotte golf. Tight, wooded golf with lots of length and even more bite. The lines are fair and the rough is managable even. Hitting said lines though? different story. You'll need every type of shot in your bag to score well here. My lack of any kind of serviceable FH handcuffed me too many times to count.

Dual concrete tees on most if not all holes. I played from the shorts and that was plenty challenging for a mediocre player like myself. I'd love to get back and play the longs, just for laughs if anything. These were all poured nice and level and worked great. I'm not real picky on my tee pads but I don't remember having any issues at any point. The two different sets can really change up the makeup of the hole.

Innova Discatcher's on all holes. A few of them had 2 baskets on a hole. I don't recall what holes these were but they were out there. The baskets are mounted nicely and catch great.

The flow of the course is generally pretty good. A few wonky transitions but nothing major. The Udisc maps are up to date and should eleviate any confusion.

The design here is Phenomenal. It's your typical Charlotte style course but with added length to many of the others and some par 4's and 5's mixed in. There are numerous devious pin placements perched right in front of a drop off. Makes you think, and gamble. I'm not a good gambler it turns out. Or good at laying up when I do think.

Shot shaping off the tee is well balanced, though it probably slightly favors a RHBH. Most course do though. The thing I liked best is that distance isn't key, placement is. All the holes are fair if played wisely. Not easy, but fair.

The tee signs are kind of your standard Charlotte fare. All the pertinent info available and even some next tee arrows. The hole maps are well done and they have hole #, par, distances and any applicable OB and/or mandos.

The course is free to play and was, shockingly, not crowded the beautiful saturday afternoon we played it. The course starts and ends by the parking area where there's a practice basket as well.

Cons:

A couple not quite obvious transitions. Nothing major, and with a good map it's not even really a concern.

The addition of the random hole (hole 10?) in the middle really jacked up the scorecard on DGCR for me. I'm all for more holes, especially at a course of this caliber. Just kind of annoying that they add a hole for the pros to play 4 or so days out of the year and that screws up the signage of the course for everyone else the rest of the time. More a DGPT complaint I guess.

Not a con, more a warning. This course is a brute. Expect to take a couple hours or so to play the full thing for the average player. A group willl obviously take longer. The course doesn't loop back to the parking lot either so you'll want to pack in everything you're going to need for the full round.

Other Thoughts:

Nevin lived up to alll my expectations. I enjoyed this course exponentially more than the nearby Hornet's Nest course. I was pretty underwhelmed by Hornet's Nest unfortunately. That was not the case at Nevin.

This is a must hit course if you're in the area. Short on time? put this one up at the top of the list, if not the tippy top. Must play. The only thing really holding it back is the sameness of the course overall. LOTS of tight wooded fairways. Really that's about all it is. I'll play this again next time I'm back though. Top of the list. It'd be nice to try the longs with fresher legs. And arm for that matter. Highly recommend this one.

Phenomenal Challenge

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Another Charlotte gem that improves as the round goes on.

-Amenities: Long concrete pads, Charlotte-style signs with maps and info, distance markers, next tee signs, clear paths, practice basket.

-Lush: Nevin is arguably the most beautiful of the Charlotte metro courses I've been to. The woods section of the course feels secluded and uninterrupted, and even more park-style sections of the course aren't slouchy with plenty of trees and great grass.

-Challenge: This one's easily advanced level. Solid distance will help, and brilliant ability to navigate technical fairways is the only way to go under par. The upshot is that good shots will feel especially rewarding here, and it shouldn't get old for any level of disc golfer.

-Rough: Nevin strikes a really good balance of heavily wooded while still having rough that is scrambleable and easy to find your disc in. I imagine there's a big kudos owed to locals for keeping it under control.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Great variety throughout incorporating plenty of shapes and lots of fascinating multi-shot holes. The first half is all claustrophobic woods that offer a fair opportunity for anything from birdie to bogey. The second half is where the course really shines, with seven multi-shot holes playing through woods, over fields, from one biome to another, with all kinds of enjoyable shapes and greens. Low ceilings are the norm. The sharpness of shots varies from gentle curves to specific doglegs requiring a scary amount of commitment. On the whole, it's extremely excellent gameplay.

Cons:

It's really hard to say much bad about Nevin. I thought the first half was pretty meh, but the design of the second half was about as good as I've seen anywhere. Perhaps it's still too much of a park-style setting, but otherwise there are only a couple of things I can pinpoint.

-Beatup: Be prepared to take a whipping out here. Bad days will only get worse, most likely.

-Distance Inconsistency: The signs are definitely not labeled correctly by my estimation. The mid-fairway distance markers are pretty good though.

Other Thoughts:

Nevin is right on the 4.0-4.25 border. The first half lacks variety through the thick woods, but the second half really notches things up for a gripping experience. It's really at the top of heap as far as city courses, and I'd recommend a stop from any serious player.

~Similar Courses: A slightly flatter, more wooded Renaissance Gold (Charlotte, NC); a more wooded Perkerson Park (Atlanta, GA); Elon Park - Angry Beaver (Charlotte, NC).

Nice tight wooded course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

I ended up playing Nevin driving though Charlotte because Hornets Nest was closed for the pro tour event. I was bummed at first, but Nevin was nearby and I was actually pretty happy that I played it.

It's a nice long wooded course with tight but manageable lines and some gradual elevation changes.

A good mix of super tight shorter holes(and a few long holes in the 400-600 range) and some that are more open but still require specific shot shapes and a lot different shot types.

Baskets are nice Innova baskets and in good shape, teepads aren't huge but in good shape and have some nice texture that made footing feel sure.

Signage is good and on both long and short teepads, and there are minis on a ton of trees to help you navigate.

It's a very nice course overall and I'm glad I got to play it.

Cons:

Most of the cons are pretty soft overall, but it doesn't have a ton of wow holes, and though it's certainly excellent it doesn't have the special factors needed to make the cut much above a 4.

Navigation is a bit tricky on a couple of holes, which is odd because the vast majority of holes are either super intuitive or marked, but two of them were hard to figure out at first.

Other Thoughts:

Really great wooded course, and it's heavily played so the locals must agree that it's pretty cool.

A beast of a course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've waited quite some time to review this course, playing it many times before finally writing a review. Most times I've left this course frustrated, and didn't want that to reflect in my review, but as my skill has improved, and my appreciation for this course has grown, I"m finally getting around to reviewing it after a successful, rewarding (but tough and frustrating..such is Nevin) round.

This course has it all. Long and winding Par 4's and a 5. Tough narrow winding holes, open long bomb shots, a double Mando hole, and the shorter painfully narrow wooded holes that reward an accurate drive. Several holes have multiple routes to the pin, which give the thrower a chance to choose between high risk/reward or the safer alternative.
Even a few fast greens that can ruin a nice approach with a quickness. This course will test every shot in your arsenal, and can really highlight any weaknesses.

The beginning of the course (from the shorts) starts out "easy" and is a nice way to warm up for what comes with the rest of the course, allowing you to hopefully get a few strokes down on the impending difficulty of the remaining holes. Although the rest of the course is often a challenge, it is absolutely fair, and not overly impossible. Accurate, well thought out shots should yield a par with no problem.

Although the course is longer than most courses, the variety in distances and pars is a refreshing change from the common all par 3 courses.

The signage is in great condition thanks to the recent Masters tournament. Color printed signs show the hole number, par, distance and layout. A nice touch, greatly enchancing the overall rating of the course for me. Once you've reached the basket, most holes have adequate "next" signs leading the way to the next tee pad. Navigation, for the most part, is a breeze!

Trash cans, or bags at most tees

Concrete tee pads are all a uniform and adequate length, and all in decent shape. No cracked pads, or too short lengths. No worrying about your run up.

The practice basket is nice! In the shade with a variety of different "in the circle" shots to warm up with. Around trees, some elevation, and again, in the shade. A perfect place to wait for the rest of your group to show up.

Cons:

It's hard to find many obvious major cons for this course.

The biggest thing keeping this course from being higher than a 4* to me is the creature comforts or amenities here. Although there are benches and trash options at most holes, the benches are often a bit rough around the edges, or have graffitti, and the trash cans lack some visual appeal. The bags hanging from trees at the tee pad, although convenient for trash, aren't a flattering option.

The new hole 16 layout can be confusing. There are TWO short 16's. One plays to the same basket as the long pad and is a proper hole, on the same level of the rest of the course. The other short 16 is it's own separate fairway and basket, and is an easy chip shot dogleg left, not of the same caliber as the rest of the course.
Confusing, but I do have to give credit. Both options have the beautiful, color Tee signs, accurately depicting the hole...

There's plenty of parking, but it can get crowded quickly as the parking lot is close to the ball fields. On weekends, there are often games going on in the fields, and plenty of people filling up the parking lot.

The bathrooms are a bit far from the course, except hole 12,13 (I believe)

Other Thoughts:

Bring your A game, every shot in your repertoire, and your walking shoes! This course can chew you up and spit you out if you're not careful. But when played well, it is one of the most rewarding and challenging disc golf courses I've every played. You need short accuracy, long accuracy and everything in between.

Although a fantastic, championship caliber course, I would not recommend it for newer inexperienced players, or introducing someone to the game, as it can be discouraging instead of inspiring.

A true gem of the Charlotte DG scene. Championship quality. Highly highly recommended advanced level course and oh so close to 5*

great course to play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

this course will test your mental game. You better bring your A game to this course. Great lines that work great with choice of your disc( just find that disc that works with the lines) You have a couple holes that you get to open your arm up as well as Hyzer shots, Anhyzer shots. there are a lot of birdies out there on this course just make sure that your shots are on place and on a good line and you are rewarded well. get off your line or pick the wrong disc, than fight for par really enjoyed this course not only would I play it again, but would recommended it to friends

Cons:

Not for a first time player, get some experience before heading to this course but this course will make you a better Disc Golfer the more you play it.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed playing this course disc used most was my Buzzz as it was a lot of placement shots for me. as I said before I could see me out on this course once or more a week,It could only build up your game as a disc golfer.

Just the challenge I was looking for.. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 20, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I did my homework before arriving in Charlotte and knew this was going to be a tough challenge and it certainly delivered. The park/scenery/course was beautiful. I played solo, from long tees, late afternoon after the rain had passed and the pads were wet but still grippy, no issues there.

I'm one of the disc golfers that really appreciates that feeling of isolation and remoteness with nature, and for a busy park course, it does still retain some of that "I'm the only one out here" kinda feel which I really enjoy. That, to me, also illustrates great separation of holes and good flow.

The course appears to drain well as I don't recall stepping into too much mud or standing water as I would expect on my usual Florida courses.

The fairways were definitely fair, you simply gotta hit your lines and use discs with little to no fade. I never felt that "poke 'n pray" feeling on any of the holes.

The use of elevation was excellent. Although most holes were tightly wooded there were a few holes that tease you with some openness but you still have to hit your lines (or make a mando) on those too.

Navigation was adequate. I arrived without a map but found hole 1 short tee then walked back to hole 1 long tee and never really got off track too bad after that except for a little confusion after I finished hole 12 I walked up to the left before realizing I needed to go down to the right to find 13.

Cons:

Not really many cons.. just a few notes. Although extremely challenging, it wasn't a course where I felt I had to do a lot of thinking on the tee pad and/or use a lot of different shots or discs. I probably only used 3-4 discs the entire round. Most of the true shot shaping seemed to come from those critical upshots. I used my TL or Roc on probably 80-90% of my drives throwing mostly flat or close to flat right down the middle. I realize that straight long shots are difficult for most players so I took this as part of the overall challenge and not so much a true "con". I wouldn't change a thing, but I know this might bother some players who can't wait to bust out their high speed overstable drivers. This is not a course for those folks.

The risk of going off fairway from the tee was a little intense for my tastes which forces me to play way more conservative than usual. That probably makes me a better player but takes a notch off the fun factor if you are hunting for lots of birdies. This could also be largely attributed to the fact that it was my first time here so no real point deduction on that note. I'm sure if I played here often as a local I would grow a pair of "Nevin balls" and start pretending the trees weren't there. ;-)

The shule on the left side of hole 12 is brutal. I lost one in there trying to LHBH hyzer flip a glo-Tern up and over the trees.. it was a decent crush and made it over but it never came back to the fairway and several minutes of searching turned up nothing.

Spiders are everywhere and although I despise them.. I'm used to playing courses that have them and I'll take a nature-oriented course over most open park courses anyday.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed my round here. The long straight shots with tight lines are tough, but extremely rewarding if you hit them. I parked hole 3 from long pads with a sweet TL shot and it felt REALLY good (it was the only hole I deuced)! You really gotta earn those birdies here. This course will punish your every error. Holes 9 - 12 were the toughest stretch for me (went 5,6,5,7) and those type of bad runs can be demoralizing but I managed to finish bogey free after that and it felt like a solid accomplishment overall. This is one of those courses that is such a challenge that I can't wait to comeback again someday and truly see how much my game has improved. This course will exploit problems with your technique and accuracy and punish you for them which is what I believe the designer was wanting to do. Kudos on a great advanced level course!

Sorry for your confusion on 12, to get to the left you have to walk through some pretty mean poison ivy. There is a next tee marker, I wish you had seen it or the well worn path right.

Nevin is North Carolina woods play at its best! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is "pro" level long & technical. Long throws through tree lined alleys await you. Some shorter holes & some open holes mixed in here & there. Elevation in play on many holes. Mando's, OB's & a creek in play. Large concrete tee pads. Alternate tee pads. Pretty scenery. The course has good flow!

Cons:

Punishing if you stray off the fairway. Thick stands of trees may force a "pitch-out" to save strokes. Side-hill pin placement on some holes will cause a roll-away putt or two (if you miss your putt). Long, long, it takes a while to play this course so plan accordingly.

Other Thoughts:

I first played this course when I first started playing disc golf & I hated it. It was way too hard!! Now that I have seen the pro's play (in Worlds) & I've advanced myself I can appreciate the extreme challenge of playing this type of course. Epic challenge comes to mind!

The Test 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 18, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a course that will test you. At 8100 feet, it is long and fairly tight. There are plenty of times you'll see the distance of the hole, reach for your driver, and then think better of it. Staying on the fairway is an absolute must if you want to score decently. If you are a hyzer distance kind of guy, you won't love it here.

The average distance is about 450 feet, but that masks how the course plays. Some holes are under 300 feet where carding a par isn't tough if your drive hits the gap. On others, you are playing over 550 feet. I took several 7's in my round, and I didn't even feel like I was playing horribly.

The first half of the course felt a bit tighter. I felt like the more memorable holes were late in the round. Hole 12 is a 950-foot joy ride, starting off fairly open over some rolling hills before descending into a wooded area where shot placement turns out to be key. This hole plays a lot like the longest hole at Flip City.

Holes 14 and 16 play near a walking path (not as unsafe as it sounds) with some wooded fences that add some character to the holes. 14 is a short uphill hole, and 16 is a long, bending downhill.

My favorite may have been 17, which starts with a straight uphill shot before a sharp dogleg to the left. The fairway gently glides down to the pin, left to right. Distances are listed along the fairway, nailed into stumps on the ground (great feature). I'm not sure the landing area at the dogleg is wide enough, but it's a dogleg hole that reminds me of some of the shots at Renny.

Elevation comes into play on most holes. No huge ups and downs, but enough to matter.

Cons:

Tee signs are not that helpful. Most just show the distance, and others have a very rough representation of the fairway. When you are throwing 600-foot holes in the woods, a much more detailed tee sign is called for because you sure aren't walking these fairways twice. It doesn't help that there are temporary signs for the 2013 amateur doubles championships, listing inconsistent distances.

Navigation isn't bad, and "next tee" signs are on most holes. However, I wasn't always clear on which holes had short tees. I was playing the longs, so this was fine for me, but playing the shorts looked tougher to navigate. The map on this site has several holes that are wrong (11 and 12, I believe), so I'm guessing it's outdated. I know maps don't matter to locals, but Charlotte attracts more disc golf tourists than most places.

I won't quibble with most of the design, and I feel like I understand what they were going for. The exception is hole 7. There is a gap of about 3 feet that you need to hit about 30 feet from the tee pad. I could certainly be wrong, but I'm dubious that even very good players can execute this shot consistently. I like holes where the first shot is not a full throw, but I ended up putting my disc through the gap and then carding the easy par.

I mentioned that the course is a test. At times, it feels like a driver's ed test. You are striving to be technically perfect and driving carefully, but you're not really having fun. I felt this way for a good chunk of the first half of the course.

Other Thoughts:

I feel similarly about this course as I do about Blue Valley in Kansas City: 1) I'm glad this kind of course exists to challenge the best, 2) the area can afford to have a course with limited appeal given the huge number of courses in the area, and 3) I wouldn't say I loved it (although I definitely was more beaten down by Blue Valley than here).

Come see how you measure up. You can't graduate without taking the test.

Hole 7's gap much wider than 3', ill measure it though and most players should be able to hit it. The thought of the shot messes with people's minds more than the actual shot. Most players can easily jump putt through it and then nestle up the the basket on the 205' hole for par. But that is the thing with Nevin. If you hit your lines, you will shoot 6-10 under par. If you are off...you will take 7's. People consistently mark the signage as a negative, I've never seen a tee sign on 130 played courses that replaced playing the hole once or walking down the hole to see how it plays. Nevin has tee signs on most holes.

Pros:

- I really enjoyed the use of elevation on this course. There wasn't much on the property, but what was available was used quite well.
- I liked the concept of a lot of holes. For example, the concept of hole 4 where you can throw a simple shot to the landing area or try to get way down the mouth. Lots of choices for the player
- Holes that needed to be tigther due to being short were (hole 7). Holes that didn't need to be tighter due to being longer weren't and had options (hole 8).
- Fairly easy to navigate

Hands down the best part that not many higher par courses get...

- Distances were marked on the holes at random points. HUGE plus that the time was taken on par 4s and 5s to mark trees with distances.

Cons:

- I felt a few times the design was a bit forced. Hole 17 seemed like the basket was just put well to the right so the hole could be a par 4. Same thing with the double mando on 14. Forcing it a bit, so to speak, to add par 4s to the course.

- Tees were good, but some of them were raised which gave a few issues with run ups.

- Not a great course to practice on. Due to the woods, you are very limited in a lot of your shot selection per hole. Overall, you throw a lot of shots. But you are limited on each hole because the fairways are so defined.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed the course and really enjoyed the concept of a lot of the holes. It's a very hard but very fair course. And fairness is very important.

Thanks Robert - Excellent last point and a unique one I haven't heard before. Nevin basically calls for a specific shot at a specific time.

The short loop planned for inside the park road will offer a practice course on the property. Origginal course was designed for the player who already has skills defined.

The whole course (including #17) was designed and built for the longs. I wish the shorts were never included in the discussion for review; they are not "Nevin," in my opinion. I have and may institute ideas to solve for the 2 "jerky" holes 5&17 by smoothing corners and lengthening throws.

Technical difficulty 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-I loved Nevin park! It's 340 acres. It has a few baseball fields, horseshoe pits, picnic shelters, multi purpose trail, a few playgrounds, bocce ball courts, shuffle board courts, soccer fields and the best of all, a challenging disc golf course. The course was extremely technical and difficult for me but I still had fun.
-LONG teepads. A chance in a foot fault is 1/10 chance.
-It's a shame most disc golf courses don't end like #18 does. #18 is the best finishing hole in Charlotte (Barely beating #18 at RL Smith.) #18 has about a 40 foot drop in elevation with the creek at the bottom of the hill. Then, it rises about 20-25 feet. The woods to the left are pretty light but to the right, they are pretty thick. Even though it's pretty wooded, you can still grip it and rip it.
-Good use of elevation on the course, #18 definitely was hilly. On most holes, the elevation is pretty good. The first few holes have elevation changes of about 10 feet.
-The course is very technical but 13 and 14 are mostly open. #12's teeshot is open but it goes into the woods. The woods will still make you better.
-#12 is another great hole. The drive is nicely downhill and it goes left into the woods. It's the longest on the course but with the teeshot, you have a change to throw a nice drive into the woods and lay up for a par. A birdie would be lucky because it's pretty narrow in the woods. This hole get no love :(, and this is a really fun hole!
-Course has great variety, like the aforementioned elevation, on the short pads it has five doglegs and a double dogleg (#5), so six holes are doglegs. On the longs it has eight doglegs. A few dropoffs, a bunch of long holes and a few short ones, and a couple open holes.
-Trash cans on almost every hole. I only saw one bottle beside a teepad, a bud light bottle. Most courses have a bit more trash. Bencheson most holes too.
-The new #11 was also unique. The teeshot was wooded and 240" feet past the tee, it's still pretty wooded but it's another majestic hole.
-Practice basket in the woods. #1 is across the street from the practice basket.
-Arrows pointing you to the next tee for the longer transitions.

Cons:

-#9 was a bit over the top for me. It's very wooded and very long. I never had a tee shot in the fairway so I would have to just throw a twenty foot shot out of the trees just to be safe. Still, I did say this course is for advanced players.
-#14's mando gate is irritating. It's not very wide, I considered it irritating because it didn't feel like a mando gate because the mando pointing left is about 15' behind the mando pointing you right. It's used to protect the horseshoe pits and the neighborhood. The first round I made it though but not the second round.
-The rough in some places is ridiculous. Even if you are just a few feet in, you'll probably lose a stroke. Whether it's a championship level course or not, it should give better opportunities. You can be that one player that says dumb things like "Play better, or don't get in the rough", but if you want to shoot well, you'll have to have some distance here and there and go for the landing zone. If you're off, good luck.

Other Thoughts:

-This is definitely a hard course in Charlotte but I enjoyed it when I would be in trouble because it makes the hole interesting and challenging. This course is not for beginners. It requires long throws and straight throws. It's extremely demanding. I know people say Renaissance is the hardest but I think that this is the toughest in Charlotte, but I loved it. Every hole can result in very high numbers. Even #2 and #13 and those are pretty easy but if you are not in the fairway, you have to work for a par.
-Every hole is unique in it's own way, I know I say #9 is a bit over the top for me but it's the hardest on the course. It's still interesting and I will say that every moment you spend playing disc golf is worth it.
-#7 would be the "love it or hate it" hole. It's 202 feet long but has a four foot gap to throw through. For a hole with a small gap, I think it has the appropriate distance. Some people will expect themselves to birdie a short hole but it's bogeyed, a lot.
-Every hole can make you or break you here. You will have to play it wisely. Look at the fairway, debate whether you should risk going for a birdie or play it safely and make a par. Going for it on this course can really hurt your score. An example of going for it would be #2 and #13. #2 is a short uphill ace run with a pretty wide fairway, #13 is an open uphill shot and after 200' feet, there is no vegetation to the left. An example of playing safely would be the aforementioned #7, #9 is very tight with an elevation gain of about 15 feet. #16 is a hole where you want to throw about 180' from the short, 350' from the long so you can make a birdie. OB is marked along the creek so if you over throw, your shot is OB.
-The reason why my title is called technical difficulty is because the course is very technical and very difficult.

Thanks for your review Benny. Hole 14 is double Mando to protect fields to left (volley ball, bocce ball, picnics, and right; peoples yards. Everyone dislikes certain holes. Hole 9 plays about middle of the pack a little less than +.5 strokes over par. 12 is the toughy +1.25 and 15 the easy one at -.25.

Silk Worms - This is a 2-week problem experienced in any wooded area (including city streets) in Charlotte. I dont remember the worms being this bad. I think the cold winter delayed gradual hatching of the worms and they all came out together. It has been insane, every where, their pooping sounded like rain at Bradford and HN this weekend.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent layout
Easy to get around
Difficult, but not crazy hard. If you keep it in the fairway, you are generally rewarded.
If you wanted to play the longer course, you don't have to go hunting for the long tees.
Good use of elevation changes.

Cons:

Hole map at tee boxes would be nice. Most holes had a hand drawn map, but not all.
Some of the par 4s are more like long 3s

Other Thoughts:

First time playing the course and I found it very easy to get around. Really the only downer to my round was it had rained the previous four days and everything was still very wet and muddy. HOWEVER, I was still able to get around the course with relative ease. Pushing my daughters stroller around the course was pretty easy. I only had issues with the mud. I will be playing this course again.

Tough wooded challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 18, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through dense woods with some nice elevation changes. The hills are used very well to add challenge and fun, with some cool uphill and downhill holes and some fast greens that add challenge to your short game. The course is technical, the couple holes that have more open drives require good placement to have a good look at the second shot. If you miss your line, you'll be penalized with dense rough and lots of trees.

There's a great mix of hole shapes here, with a balanced st of right and left turning holes to challenge all the shots in your bag. The course plays pretty long, especially from the pro tees, but there are reachable holes mixed in to keep things interesting. The tees are nice concrete pads with good texture and plenty of room. The signage is basic, but adequate to figure out the course.

Cons:

The rough is so thick throughout most of the course that you never have the chance to be creative if you miss your line. I like punishment for missing the fairway, but it gets a little old to be just pitching back out every time. There are lots of fairways that have stumps and roots under the leaves, watch your step.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very challenging course, that will test your line shaping skills and rewards players that can accurately hit longer shots through the woods. The shorter tees are a great challenge for intermediate players, they offer great variety with a little less challenge. The pro tees are just plain tough, they would offer a real challenge for even the best players. Beginners won't have much fun here, it's just too long and punishing even from the short tees.

A Toughy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 12, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This course requires a lot of different shots from the teepad which is really nice.
-The tees were very nice with long teepads and very accurate portrayals of the hole on the signs. Be sure to notice the arrows indicating the slope on the holes before you play as many times you can't see the basket for a few shots.
-There are distances lined down each hole like you would find in ball golf and I found that very nice since a lot of your shots are used trying to get to a good layup spot.
-Great signage to get you from one hole to the next. It was our first time playing and we never got lost.

Cons:

-The par 5's seemed a little much for me. You could shoot well on them if you just took a bunch of straight shots or thumbers but even then you can find trouble. I found them to be more work than fun unlike say the par 5 at Hornets Nest that is challenging but still fun.
-I also found that many of the holes I was just hoping for a par which can get pretty dull.
-A few times we didn't realize there was a short tee and a long tee (hole 1 for instance) but we may have missed the signs.

Other Thoughts:

I really liked this course and aside from the par 5's I enjoyed my round. This is definitely a course that requires multiple plays to master it. Many times on the teepad I thought one shot was appropriate but when I got to my drive I realized I should have done something completely different. #18 was my favorite hole it is long but with 2 good shots and a putt you can make a 3 on it. This course will definitely challenge both your physical game and your mental game and that isn't a bad thing.

**Update: More benches installed so yo have a place to cry and collect yourself after each hole.

Perspective from a local 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 13, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I live in Charlotte and this is the first time playing this course. This is an EXHAUSTING course that requires one to take their time. No quick matches - be sure you have extra time and patience to get through this one.

Tee Pads are all consistently made: about 10 feet long - this is plenty of space for most of us, never had to start my drive behind the pad. Love the tee at Hole 8 where you have the option of going right or left, and the pad is shaped to facilitate driving either direction.

Tee Signs/Maps/Markers - no map at some holes but not really a problem. Signage is overall excellent. Mandos, next tees, and distances all clearly marked.

No problems with foliage. We spent our share of time in the rough but no lost discs. That will certainly change in the Spring / Summer. I had a few spots where the briars were thick even in winter. I will approach this course with caution in the warm growth months.

Optimization of elevation is quite well done. Hole 18 has a tremendous valley where you drive downhill. I do like opportunities for longer drives like this hole provides. There are a few other similar ones but I'll always be able to picture 18 when I close my eyes - it's memorable.

Nice variety of shots required - fairways vary in direction, angle, length, and elevation where the game stays interesting.

The back 9 has beautiful scenery: creeks, bridges, walking paths. I was feeling great at holes 15-16. The airplanes were no longer overhead and it was peaceful. Good place to be.

Cons:

Benches were missing where needed the most: just before and after the long par 4/5 holes. Funny there was a horseshoe field that had benches laid out at each throw point and we had to walk right by them knowing that our disc golf pad had none. I was jealous that the horseshoe throwers seemed to get more love than us.

Trash bins were missing from most of the front 9 holes. Back 9 had more trash receptacles but still not every hole.

Noise: Airplanes taking off overhead for most of the front 9 which was a nuisance. Also lots of cars w/ loud bass music driving by. Not the most serene or quiet of courses.

Hole 7 had some wicked nails and boards on the pair of trees just in front of the tee pad that scared the bejeezus outta me - I could see one of my nice discs getting impaled on a nail head, made me condiser throwing one of my less favorites just in case.

Other Thoughts:

Course Flow: I was needing a major break after hole 9, but there was nothing but a few benches, another parking lot, and a long walk back to the car. I do hear some folks wrap back to the car after 12 but I think next time I might park in the lot at 9 and leave a cooler in the car, then walk back to start at 1 with the "warm-fuzzy" feeling of cold beer waiting before the back nine. This is very important for such a long course.

Overall challenge was extreme. This was a physically exhausting course. I'd never consider trying to play a quick match out here. You must take your time or you will lose discs and maybe even injure yourself if not careful.

Security: I would not leave any valuables in sight in your car. You shouldn't need me to tell you this. Thieves look for easy opportunities - don't give it to em.

I'm rating this course a 4.0 because it was still very fun - even with sore leg muscles, raw thighs, and the jet airplanes trying to disrupt my mojo.

The reviewer is correct however I can provide a little more detail.
Trash cans are permanent on holes 1, 3, 7, 11(moved to 12), 13, 15, 18. Biased by 1 to the back 9. The thought was that people would finish drinks more towards the back of the course. These are all the locations the park department was willing to empty and volunteer resources to empty additional cans have been unreliable.

Tough But Great 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course will test your skills. The holes are very long and narrow. You can not relax on any of the holes, since almost every one requires total concentration.

Cons:

If you end up more than 2 feet off the fairway, you are in big trouble. Unlike other courses where you can save a bad drive by making a good approach shot, you are likely to need 2-3 shots just to get back to the fairway. Removing a few trees from most of the holes would make it more fair.

Other Thoughts:

This is a very tough course that will test your skills. It can be frustrating, but will provide a great challenge. It is also only a few miles from Hornets Nest, so you can play both courses if you are feeling ambitious.

NOT for the faint of heart 2+ years drive by

Pros:

OK, first, this course is CHALLENGING!
Very long, very technical, and very fun.
Concrete T-pads, some decent (handdrawn) signnage, and very thought out , long, layout

Cons:

DIFFICULT, have i said its long yet?
NOT beginner friendly, this course will kick most seasoned player's asses (which is also a pro! )

Other Thoughts:

Bottom line- this course is new, still a ton of work to be done on it. In it's current state it is very impressive and ambitious.
This course is definitely looking to be a gold level championship course, its still got a good deal of work that needs to be done, but so far so good.

The length and hole layout is going to challenge damn near anyone, normally I would count this sort of difficulty as a fault, but NC has SO many courses in this area that a course like this isn't going to inhibit anyone from learning the sport.

The course seems like the parks just gave people this forest and said have your way with it. You can literally see where they carved their way through the dense forest to make way for the fairways that make up this course. Definitely a must play for any serious disc'er

- also- see brotherdave's review! he hits the nail right smack center on the head. this course definitely wants to kick your ass and take your lunch money

the final frontier... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Today I took bogeys on almost all holes, and still had a great time. This park is massive, and so is the course. It was raining and the ground was playdough, but I was there to scope out the new beast that everyone is raving about, by myself, with no one else around. Whole round went smooth thanks to the arrows and signs.(from #9 to #10 there is an unused tee pad in the fairway of ten dont let it fool ya, go down the hill to the stream for #10 tee pad)All in all it is a tech course with mid-range disc control a prerequisite, a true game of golf is played at Nevin, not an ace run course.
That is the future of this sport and Stan and CDGC are ushering it in big time with this amazing course.

Cons:

Be in shape, or pay the price.I carry 22 discs when I play, I would like to think I have everything I need for my Charlotte courses. This course slapped me across the face when I realized I have so few under stable discs in my bag.I throw mostly side-arm so I have an array of stability, but today I could have used an under stable driver for backhand finesse shots. This course demands concentration like no other in the area, if you can't shape a shot you will not like this course at first.I used a max weight Mako today half way through the round and started getting my game back.Great course for training your arm to do exactly as you wish, because if you falter for one shot you will be looking at bogeys galore.

Other Thoughts:

This is Renny's conservative old crotchety grandfather.
Some holes have flashy trick shot shortcuts, but very few.Where Renaissance will make obvious big steep elevation changes, Nevin will trick you with elevation and pinpoint accurate distance. I was expecting a pro level course like Hornets Nest but I got a glimpse at the future of our sport and course design instead Can't wait for a dry day, all of us here in the disc golf mecca of Charlotte have been building and playing these new courses in slop all winter.Thank you CDGC, and all who keep our courses clean and playable.

Within a year this course will be a 4 with teesigns, maintenance issues resolved, and concrete pads installed. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 20, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Concrete teepads are going to be poured very soon. I think this coming weekend so I will give them some leeway since I played them with the gravel filled frames in place.

2) If you want a challenge come here!!! This is the most difficult and least forgiving course in Charlotte and quite possibly the second least forgiving course I have played to date (only to Jack McLean in Tallahassaa). I like a challenge no matter how hard it is, that is how you learn.

3) This course is set on yet another incredible Mecklenberg county park. Everyone of these courses and parks are incredible. They are clean, they have tons and tons of things to do and they are simply put a jewel to the already kick butt city of Charlotte. I could spend a day in everyone of their parks! Come on bocceball, horseshoes and shuffleboard. If that isn't an excuse to hang out at the park all day!

4) Next tee signs are helpful for navigation on this newer course.

5) Tee signs are present and although a little crude they do help out on the teepad. I am sure they will be top notch signs by the time this course is fully installed. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt because of this county parks departments record.

5) It is obvious the local club does a lot for this course as with all the other local parks. One of the main guys was there on a rainy day getting some timber in place for a retaining wall.

6) Playing this course is like a wonderful walk int he woods. It is so secluded from the outside world. Sure you might run into some walkers but you won't hear any street noise, and you may not see any vehicles for the majority of this course. I enjoy courses like this.

7) Many of the stumps and roots (trippers) have been flagged or painted so you do not break an ankle while playing. This is a positive but the true best way to handle these would be to take a brush hog and cut those things flush with the ground.

8) Mandos are used effectively to force a specific line on a few holes. These are not used for safety they are instead used for intentional hole design.

9) Ribbon is used to help you guide yourself from hole to hole. It is nice that they have done such things to help ease navigation since the course is new and everyone is playing it for the first time.

10) Discatchers in great condition because they are brand new. The yellow band is key for this course because finding the basket on a double dogleg 600' hole can be tough sometimes!

11) There are multiple signature holes on this course. There is only one throwaway hole: Hole #13. That one just isn't scenic, it is pretty straight forward and there is no risk/reward. All the other holes have trouble to avoid, shot shaping to consider, and other trouble to avoid.

12) Shot distances vary throughout the course. You will need many different discs and you will need to be accurate with them so do not be afraid to throw midranges if that is what will get you to the doglegs etc.

Cons:

1) Course is still very new so it is rough in spots and will need to wear in a little bit. It is obvious that the local crew will help make this course as good as it can be. There are spots of the course that need some cleanup. Downed branches, thick shule areas close to the fairways, and areas that simply need to receive a little attention. There also are a few areas that have junk piles. There is a rotary and pushbutton phone cemetary in on spot on the course and 2 or 3 other times I noticed piles of junk (not plant material, I mean garbage, cans, etc). They may have a plan to pick this things up and the are simply in a pile to make the cleanup easier. These are all things that I put into one category because the course is so new I didnt think it would be fair to leave in the review. I will update this review when I hear that these issues have been taken care of or if I return next year. I do however think they are worth mentioning for the time being.

2) Not beginner friendly at all. There are way too many tight wooded holes of extreme distance. This combination makes this course virtually unusable for beginners without serious frustration. It might even be frustrating for advanced players.

3) There is a long walk to Hole #1 and from Hole #18 back to the lot. This isn't a huge issue, but worht mentioning.

4) Teesigns are a little crude so hopefully they do replace them with nice descriptive signs. This course needs a diagram for sure!!!

5) Walking path OB's seem to be a little bit unfair. They are what would normally be a fairway and I understand they may use it for safety, but a couple of the areas are simply not forgiving at all.

6) Hole #14 has an area that looks to be a dump for the maintenance department. Just another one of those things that will change eventually but hopefully be one of the many things the club will attack after they get the teepads poured and can focus on conditioning.

7) No benches or garbage cans yet. I again am sure this will change overtime.

8) I played this course after a lot of rain the night before. It did pretty well but there are areas on the course that certainly can retain some water. Also a few areas that could use some steppers or planks to get across some wet areas.

Other Thoughts:

Worth mentioning is that Hole #18 is going to be changing. I have a feeling it was becoming an issue that you end up throwing across the road. Some people in cars either have complained or gotten hit.

Please take this review with a grain of salt considering I am an out of towner and although I hope to come back next year again for another few days. I will only be able to update this review after I return, but it hopefully has some information that will be helpful for the next few months.

I have rated this course according to what I saw when I played 1/17/2010. I am sure it will be a 4 rated course by the time I return next year or the yer after and I will most certainly adjust my rating. I want to represent the course as it stands right now, but will certainly want to adjust the rating as the course gets broken in more and more and more playable. I also can tell the structure of the course is there and it will be an incredible course, so I am being somewhat lenient with my rating. I do not want to give it a 3 which is what I would give it in its current state. I am raising the rating to 3.5 because I am sure the things I have mentioned will be worked on in short order. If everything gets improved and taken care of this course could be as high as a 4.5 in my opinion.

I highly recommend playing if you liek a challenge but if you get easily frsutrated maybe you should skip this course or you might give yourself some health issues. It is tough and long, but seems to be fair, but the more and more play that comes the less luck you will need and you can focus on just using your skill to execute the shots. Have a good time but be prepared fro some bogies, doubles, and worse. I only had one birdie and I had two 6's. That is surely a tough course.

UPDATE: I upgraded the course to a 4 from the sound of it all the concrete is in, tee signs are up, and it seems to have received the work that was close when I was there. I am updating this from 3.5 to 4.0 because those were the things I wanted to see to give the course a 4.0. If I return next year I bet it will be a borderline 4.5 course like I have said.

What a gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is one of the toughest courses that Charlotte has to offer. It is up there with Renny Gold and the Web.

You are tested right from the start with a tough par 4. Most of the front 9 is in the woods. There is a good mix of elevation and mixture of shots. You must have a sidearm on some of these holes (or a good turnover shot). Although it is still new (played it just after Xmas), the fairways are still fair, especially on the drives for the par 4's and par 5's. It gets more technical on these holes for your 2nd and 3rd shots. The greens utilize the elevation really well (some "putt of deaths"). The back nine opens up a little more, but when it does you must keep your disc in play (cart paths and double mando). The finishing holes were really tough (16 and especially 17) with accuracy being a must.

Cons:

The course is still new so the tee boxes are not poured yet (but they were framed and were filled with gravel - i only slipped once). Once the concrete is poured, it will be money. The signs gave you the yardage and an idea of where the basket is. We had no problem in finding the next tee from the basket as there were trees and flags leading you.

If you got off the fairway, there were some thick areas. This is def. not a beginner course. Some of the approaches on the par 5's were a little tight. When the club focuses their attention on this course, it will be top notch.

Other Thoughts:

This is my first review of a course on this website, and I am from Virginia. I have played alot of courses in both states (and plan on to start reviewing the ones I've played), but this course has inspired me to start my DGCR reviews. I also played the Elon course and thought that this one was a little better, so I gave it a 4 now with 4.5 around the corner.

Score : -1 (65)
