Hogan Dam East Is At Least Instinctive To Navigate! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 24, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

had to drag myself kicking and screaming over to play this course after my horrible experience on the West Course. I found it much less painful than the West. By now, I at least knew which course I was playing.

The course plays through and over a lot of the same terrain as the West Course. It's mostly open and often times windy. The distance and the wind are your primary challenges here. Most holes are around 275-325' but the stretch from 10-13 play from 425' up to 675' and 695' respectfully. As other reviewers have commented, there isn't much chance of losing your discs here and the views can be wonderful. If you have a big arm and like airing it out, then you may be more likely to like this course.

Holes 10, 11 and 12 make up one the most boring stretches of disc golf that I have had the misfortune to play.
# 10 is 675' across a wide open expanse.
# 11 plays 550' slightly up a wide open hill.
# 12 is either 450' or 569' straight up a wide open hillside.
#13 is around 425' and open.
By this point, I was ready to rub dirt in my eyes and vomit in my mouth.

I was really not pleased with the basket placement on # 5. When you look from the tee pad 400' to 550' away, you think the basket is cleverly placed behind this very cool tree and branches with a big arc to it forcing you to have to play through it. This was going to be an epic hole. I was so disappointed when I walked down there and found the basket in FRONT of the cool arc and rocks. Please move this basket behind the arc!

Cons:

Natural tee pads.

Terrible basket location on # 5.

A group of long, open boring holes.

Bad course sign.

Other Thoughts:

Obviously, I was not real thrilled with my experience here at the Hogan Dam West and East courses. I guess I can see where other big-armed players would enjoy these courses more. Sometimes playing solo can be a little more frustrating, like trying to navigate three, four, five or more courses. And like the case at Hogan Dam, local disc golfers are like cops, there's never one around when you need one.

Tips:
• Bring a map

Random Thoughts:
So obviously you need to read both the East and West reviews to know what you're getting out here and since there are two courses I felt like I was cheating the course by reviewing them separately. I'd rather see this listed as one big course because that's basically what it is. But having said that, my thoughts on the East course are that it's just ok. But that doesn't mean it's easy. There are a number of holes that, while pretty open, are quite long, so you will need to be consistent to score well out here. Overall though, the holes have well defined routes that aren't particularly difficult to make par on but birdies will require long shapely shots. The tee areas are in much better shape now for the most part. They are dug out better and more level. They almost look like they're prepped for concrete which of course would be great. The baskets are all in good shape so no worries there. Navigation can be tricky as there are so many holes within close proximity. The map is a must. What I'd like to see on this course is a bit more use of the trees and terrain, but having said that, there are a few memorable holes here and there. And I'd like to say again, that this is a nice destination course. Due to its location, I suspect it's not convenient for anyone, but I enjoy loading up the BBQ supplies and heading here. With all the amenities and the atmosphere/views, it makes for a fun relaxing day.

Bottom Line:
A good companion course to the West course but would not be all that interesting all by itself. But hey, you can never complain too much about a site with 36 holes on it. Kudos to the course designers for continuing to make improvements to this course. And again, I'd definitely review this course higher if it were one course. It's doing the course a disservice to split them up. So, of course, now go read the West review.
