Best Course Yet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 17, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Great rough tee pads that help in wet weather
-Well maintenance course with great paths in between holes.
- Hole lengths are well distributed throughout the course, including the use of an old chicken shack as part of the course
-Challenging pin locations require extra thought when playing.

Cons:

-Just a little bit difficulty in navigation of the course. Extreme elevation changes should be taken into account, but makes for a great course

Other Thoughts:

Can't wait to go back and play this course. Totally worth the $5 charge!

Put it on your wish list 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 31, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is better than its current rating. This is truly a destination quality course. I was in town to visit my in-laws north of Atlanta and saw this course had pretty recently been developed in the area and so I took the drive to go visit.

First impression, even with the trees bare in winter, this is still a beautiful area and an absolutely ideal place to put a DG course. The course took full advantage of a wide range of tight wooded areas and more open fields. The elevation of the area came into play with several very fun and challenging uphill and downhill throws. I ran into the course designer while I was playing (he was moving pin positions as he does about once a month) and his comment to me was, "This is the kind of thing you can do when you are on private land and you are given free reign to use the land how you wish." That statement really captures the course and the way that it compliments the environment that it is located in. Keith was able to widen a fairway if it made better use of the land or enhance the diversity of the course. This leads to a great flow through the course and a feeling that every hole is a perfect fit for the location.

I know a lot of you won't read the narrative, so here are a few quick hitters in list form to quickly illustrate a few of this course's biggest pros:

1) Beautiful area and land--from one teebox you look out over the trees and can see the mountains of North Carolina, a couple holes later you stand at another teebox and look over the mountains of Georgia--stunning

2) Balanced--power vs. finesse, lefty vs. righty, elevation vs. flat, it is all here

3) No "throw-away" holes--not a single hole feels like a filler

4) Great mix of fun and challenge--some courses are great mostly because of their challenge (i.e. Idlewild), some because of the fun factor (i.e. Flip City), some really achieve both in great balance (i.e. Flyboy), I feel like this course finds that balance very nicely.

Cons:

Not really anything--I guess it could be listed as a con that it is far away from any metro area, or that it is physically demanding enough that it could be a struggle for someone in bad shape, but I don't hold those things against the course.

Other Thoughts:

Flyboy is still my far and away number one course that I have ever played, but this course is in the next tier of favorites that includes (in no particular order): Idlewild, Flip City, Toboggan, and Delaveaga--I would rate it just higher than Holler in the Hills, Waterworks, Renaissance, and the Circle R Ranch courses.

Truly an awesome course

Lula Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 15, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It is obvious this course was designed by a disc golfer that wanted to make a high caliber course. A lot of work was put into the design and the small details in the course including elevating tees and stairs, and maintaining trails between holes. The design is nice because there is a mix of long and short holes and most of the long holes are two shot holes so you don't have to throw super far to be successful on the course, but it is long enough so that it is an advantage.

Cons:

You definitely have to drive out of your way to get to this course, but it is well worth it especially if there is a doubles tournament there. Also this course needs at least a B tier tournament to put it on the map so more people will come to practice it. It is a very nice tournament course with no tournaments played there.

Other Thoughts:

Although this course is out of the way it can definitely stand as a destination course. I havent tried the zipline course but it looks nice, and there are campsites available.

Well done! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Secluded course with 18 holes and dual tee pads for each one. Concrete pads at most holes with a few wooden decks mixed in. Good signs at each hole showing basket positions and length. Also plenty of next tee signs to keep you on the right path.

Excellent hole length variety. Holes ranging from 180' all the way to 810'. Also a nice mix of wooded hole and open holes. There is something for everyone here.

Multiple basket positions. So the layout and angles may change the level of difficulty depending on what the set up is when you play here.

All fairways are cleared well, and offer clear defined paths to the basket. Only the shorter holes have lines that could be considered overly tight.

Good use of elevation. There are up hills and down hills. There is also several basket positions on hill sides to add to the challenge for approaches and putts. Nothing gets monotonous or repetitive.

Nice facilities with cold drinks, clothes and discs. Cool looking building that you can hang out in and have a snack or watch some TV. Camping on site also. Multiple zip lines if you need another reason to come here.

Cons:

A couple of the wooden tee pads are a little slippery. I was told that once they have some steady dry weather they will treat them with some coating that will fix the problem.

Lots of straight shots with limited line shaping tests. Seemed as if there were many straight shots and then the basket positioned just left or right of the fairway center line.

Rough can be punishing in spots. Fairways offer plenty of room, but get off and you are in some thick vines, weeds and brush.

A few of the steep hilly fairways could use some stairs to help with the climbs and help with erosion.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course that offers a lot of good holes. There is some nice wooded down hill ace runs, and some longer bombs. There are some uphill shots and even the famous indoor hole complete with a vending machine at the end.

Hole 6 was probably my favorite. It combines about 650' of open field with a dog left left and then about a 150' up hill shot through the woods. I love holes that combine a couple different elements like that.

The first few holes are short wooded holes that offer some nice ace chances. But don't let the start fool you, this course has plenty of length, and plenty of chances to get yourself in trouble.

The best way I can explain this course is that if Stan McDaniel was in a really good mood one day, this is something he might design. It has some long wooded holes with punishing rough. It just doesn't have the holes with the landing zones and extremely tight gaps. You are punished for mistakes here, but it doesn't seem like it was designed to intentionally put you through the ringer. I guess I would classify it as tough, but very fair. Play clean and you are OK. Plus there are no holes where I thought the lines were too tight or that contained trees in the middle of the fairway.

This course if definitely worth playing, even if it's a little out of the way. Keep in mind that it gets pretty hot in a Georgia summer, and this course has some steep hills and long open walks. Bring good shoes and plenty of water.

Big time fun! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wow, this course is definitely a must-play destination type of course. It's very cool to be incorporated with the canopy tour, but the course stands on its own as sweet.

The hole variety, beauty, and challenge are all top-notch. You will definitely need a wide variety of shots in your bag, plus patience and endurance to score well here. I played one round from the longs and one round from the shorts and will probably play the shorts again next time as those longs are very long and tough.

This course is never boring with long holes, short holes, all kinds of curves and elevation, tight lines, and more open bombs.

The course is just a hair behind my favorite course, Steady Ed.

Cons:

The rough is very rough in places and it is tough to find your disc at times. The walk is a bit grueling and there are times when it's hard to keep your footing going up and down hills at angles.

Other Thoughts:

A definite must-play in Georgia. I can't wait to play this course again someday.

top notch course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- peaceful, creative, challenging, demanding, diversified; simply a disc golf paradise.

- friendly staff, useful map/scorecard, worth every bit of the $5 they charge. Nice benches.

- Long holes, short holes, wide open holes, skinny technical holes, lefty holes, righty holes, downhill / uphill holes.

- short pads available to try to take it easy on the beginners on such a demanding course.

- well marked and flow is easy enough to follow. Excellent use of terrain which will force you to vary your shot selection quite a bit.

- prestine scenery allowing for some picturesque fairways.

- a chicken coop hole with a soda machine.

Cons:

- nasty thorns in the rough.

- I would not say it's a major issue, but there are a few holes in which some better defined pathways on steep sections and more use of steps where applicable can help lower risk of injury. Holes 3 (downhill) & 6 (uphill) come to mind on this issue.

Other Thoughts:

This course was amazing in every regard. It was not just a typical round of disc golf, but more like an entire disc golf experience. I played solo with the entire course to myself and I still had a great relaxing round. This course is worth the drive if you are passing through north GA.

I Love Lula 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 4, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

North Georgia Canopy Tour has installed an extreme disc golf dream course. Every hole is difficult in one or more respects (usually more). Radical elevation changes, thick punishing rough, long distance, tricky lines through woods, protected or hilly pin placements, water, and an indoor hole can all be found on the course. Awesome mix of challenging throws and different looks make for several memorable holes offered. Only consistent quality shots will keep you close to par. Number 12 is a one of a kind for me so far. It is in an old barn, chicken coop, or something, that it maybe 50 feet wide, 25 feet tall at the roofs peak, and 400 feet long. Straight shot nearly all the way from one end to the other.

All of the necessary equipment is in good shape. Almost all holes have two tees, either concrete pads or decks, with signs mapping the hole with distance. The Discatchers are good as new, and a practice basket. Signs do well locating direction of next tees.

Cons:

The wind was constant 20 MPH the duration of my round while I was there, making it even harder. This course kicked my butt, and I was OK with it. Definitely not beginner friendly, not even recreationally friendly. Traversing the steep slopes may be too much for anyone unable to withstand a moderately strenuous hike. Cost is $5, and the high winds discouraged me from getting my moneys worth by playing a second round.

Other Thoughts:

This would be a fun place to spend a weekend. Of course disc golf is the main attraction (to me anyway), but there is also a zip line tour and camping on the same grounds. Playing this course again is something I would be happy to do (preferably without the wind). If you're a serious disc golfer, I would suggest you check this one out if you're able. It's worth the trip. Similar to Stoney Hill or All Terrain Disc Golf in South Carolina.

NGCT 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 10, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

The North Georgia Canopy Tour in Lula, Georgia presents a very challenging par 61 course. Set in the scenic foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, it features varied terrain with plenty of elevation changes. Multiple tee pads give players of different skill levels options while multiple pin placements keep things fresh. Tight fairways, natural obstacles, and even an abandoned chicken house on hole twelve help define the course. Long holes that demand accurate drives, precise upshots and in general lots of smart golf add to the challenge. A few shorter holes, wooded holes, and tunnel shots are sprinkled in and just add to the variety. Overall you'll battle through twelve par 3's, five par 4's and one par 5. Four holes have you playing near or along a creek so getting wet a few times is possible as well.

The course is fully stocked with all the bells and whistles. As mentioned, duel tee pads (short and long) are on each hole. Most of them are very roomy concrete pads with a nice rough surface. A couple of the holes where there are very steep grades required wooden decks for tee pads. While not typical, they do the job. Great signs at each tee are here too. Although they don't have the newly installed alternate pin placements printed on them, makeshift indicators and distances were added and work just fine. Next tee signs are set around the course and help with some already pretty easy navigation. There are plenty of homemade benches throughout the course and they serve their purpose well especially after some of the arduous uphill walks. I also thought the burlap trash bags hung from trees with carabiners were a nice touch. Brand new Innova DISCatchers on all 18 holes are very familiar to most and of course they're very easy to spot in the woods.

The course has some interesting sights too. The first thing you'll notice is the zip line course that's visible throughout a lot of the course. Cables, towers, and occasional zip liners themselves add to the atmosphere. There are a few ponds visible from the tees but they really aren't in play. The windmill beside hole six's tee pad was an interesting addition too. I also noticed an old (probably 40's model) car that found its resting place tucked in the woods behind 14's basket. I actually thought it was pretty cool sitting back there. Probably the most memorable feature on the course was the before mentioned chicken house. It's roughly a 40'x 450' building just 6' tall on each end and maybe 20' tall at its peak. The basket rings up at about 365' from the long pad. Definitely easier said than done! You'll want to throw several on this hole for sure.

Cons:

Getting off the fairway can be grueling on some holes. The well defined fairways are great but just don't stray. A really bad tee shot could earn you two or three extra strokes and probably even a little time searching for a disc.

I've not played this course in the Georgia heat yet but I can imagine that the hills will take their toll on those not in the best of shape (me).

The course is somewhat out of the way and most folks (those coming from the northern metro Atlanta area) will have close to an hour or more drive to the course. No restaurants, gas stations, etc. are near the course either.

Other Thoughts:

I felt like $5 to play was well worth it and actually a bargain. After all, there's a friendly staff, a building that could dub as a club house, clean bathrooms, ample parking, and most importantly a great course. I also like the fact that you can make a weekend trip out of it if you are interested in zip lining too. There are a couple of lodging options including teepees and camping.

The course is a great tournament course too. Look for a pretty big scoring spread on a lot of the holes. Although there are a few holes where big arms have the advantage, key placement of shots will yield the best score in the long run.

I would put this up with the very top courses in the Atlanta area. I'm giving it a 4 but I could easily give it a 4.5 too. If you are looking for a truly challenging course with good variety and something a little different than what Atlanta has to offer then this is a must play in my view. Enjoy!

Pros:

This course was an orgasm from hole to hole. Beautiful Northern Georgia, in the mountains. A ziplining course runs through the same private property.
This course creates tricky and clever shots... best of all, they're shots you've never seen before! The changes in elevation are incredible. The course is extremely well-manicured; with steps, benches, defined pathways, next tee signs, water stations, and trash cans. The course was well-cut (not overgrown).

Cons:

The course is a good hike and will leave most players tired at the end. Retrieving some discs that leave the fairway may be a little dangerous on the steep hillsides

Beautiful Hilly Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This private pay to play course is one of Georgia's must play courses. The course is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is one of the most beautiful courses in the Southeast. The park has been designed to give the canopy tour guest a quiet solitude while they travel through the tree tops of an Appalachian Mountain forest. The course is designed so that it will not disturb the canopy tour guest. Because of this the course is located away from other park activities. The course is mostly wooded with plenty of elevation change, with a wide variety of holes. One hole is located inside of a former chicken house. The park has a pro shop, snack bar and a very friendly staff. I most recently played the course from the short tees this fall. The course is absolutely stunning in the fall and the short tees offer you an energy conserving round. The short tees will give you a different look at the course with a lot of fun shots. The baskets, tee pads and signs are in excellent condition.

Cons:

The elevation change can be a bit grueling in the summer. However a Coke machine is available on hole twelve.

Other Thoughts:

I consider this course to be one of the three must play disc golf destinations in Georgia (Flyboy, The International Disc Golf Center and the North Georgia Canopy Tour).

Solid Design - good mix of long and short. CLEAN FAIRWAYS!!!! A Very VALID Course.

Beautiful Land - Lots of elevation change, nice mix of woods and open, up and down, and left and right

2 sets of concrete Tees - I only played the longs

New Disccatchers

The chicken ShaQ (with drink machines)

Friendly People

Zip Lining and Canopy Tours on site! Also Camping and TeePee rentals!

Exercise!

Cons:

While the hills are pretty, they do require some serious hiking up and down the "lil mountain."

While the fairways are CLEAN, the rough is thick with shule. A very good player will have little to no issues staying on the fairway most of the time.

It also gets a little windy up there.

BIGGEST CON- Is that I dont live there and can't play it all the time

Other Thoughts:

This is by far the best new course in GA since Flyboy. It also easily breaks into the Top 5 of GA courses.

It's an excellent weekend getaway with Disc Golf, Zip Line tours, and camping on site.

I have played over 100 courses around the country and won Pro Tournaments in 7 different states, and this is only the 2nd course I have ever felt strongly enough about to review.

I hope enough disc golfers venture out to NGCT to show the owners what a special disc golf course they have created.

Pros:

Very challenging, requires a variety of throws, every hole is well designed and maintained, very easy to navigate w/o a map, multiple tees, great variety of elevation, open and wooded holes, great pro course. Very interesting and exciting holes, great scenery, very private and secluded. Never seen cops etc there and never even run to any other players there, for that matter. Chicken coupe is great. Drink machine at the end of the chicken coupe, hole 12($1.25) you will need it. Great workout, felt like I had been on a long hike in the mountains afterwards. I would drive a great distance to play this course, it's a gem.

Cons:

Sometimes the grassy field on basket #5 is too high in the summer. If you throw lousy on any of the baskets you will be punished by the thick brush and probably loose a disc or two, not a beginner or even intermediate friendly course. $5 dollars to play(well worth it though) Very hot in the summer unless morning or evening(goes w/o saying)

A really great Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

There is a great mix of lengths and lines and numerous memorable holes. This is definitely a great course for tournament play because there is a lot of room for scoring separation and it provides a challenge. This is because it really rewards good shots with it's moderately tight but completely fair fairways and punishes poor throws with it's thick rough. Par 4's and 5's are typically my favorite holes and this course's have been designed well with nice landing zones and some technical approaches. Finally, another big plus is that there are much more relatively flat and downhill drives than there are uphill drives.

Cons:

Several walks between holes are a bit long, and up the these hills that can wear you down.

Thick rough can make it hard to find errant throws.

Other Thoughts:

This course doesn't require a big arm to score well but does require moderate distance. Big arms may be able to get a couple long eagle putts on the short pins though if they are accurate too.

Best Hole in Georgia! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Chicken Coop Hole - GREAT, GREAT hole that words or pictures cannot do justice. I love crazy holes more than most (Hippodrome is my second favorite course), so I was really looking forward to this one, although I feared it would be a little "out there", even for me. The truth is, in person, the hole is not gimmicky at all. It was 95 degrees of oppressive heat but the Coop was surprisingly cool and pleasant and even had a Coke machine inside with ICE COLD sodas, PowerAdes and waters as an added bonus. With all apologizes to #3 at Flyboy and #1 at Steady Ed, this hole is the new signature hole in Georgia.

Individual Hole Design - Very unique holes. The designer asked a lot of questions that I was not used to answering: Extreme downhill, uphill with low ceiling, drives requiring short exact placement over distance. There really isn't a throw-away hole on the course (maybe #5) but my highlights were:

#1 - Fun, short downhiller with a very straight shot required.

#3 - Tricky hole plays big-time downhill. No room to throw a spike, or even a subtle hyzer.

#6 - Placement is key to get in position to make an approach on this Par 5. If you haven't played it before take a walk up to look at the basket once you hit the mouth of the gap. The green is much more treacherous than it appears on the bottom.

#8 - Just a beautiful short par 3, would be the signature hole on virtually any course without a Chicken Coop.

#11 - Brains over brawn par 4. Scores could range from an easy 3 to a frustrating 6 if the drive is not placed properly in the gap. Twenty feet left, long, or right is no man's land.

#12 - See Chicken Coop above

#13 - Steep downhiller reminded me of a ski-slope hole with the power lines even mimicking the chair lift.

Amenities - Perfect new Innova baskets, level and long tee-pads, nice tee-signs on every hole. You cannot overstate how nice the facility is: Spacious and cool with clean restrooms, friendly staff, and a much needed supply of beverages. In an ideal world would have been great to circle back here after each 9.

Cons:

The sign on #6 is misleading. The sign depicts the basket to be further than the weather-vane. In actuality, the gap to the basket is in front of the weather-vane. My group overshot the gap because of the sign (and it was too damn hot to do a lot of extra walking and look), and replayed our shots when seeing the basket placement.

Right to left shots - Is the designer of this course a big anhyzer thrower? Not sure if it was an aberration of our particular rounds, but for me and my playing partner, a firebird or any over stable plastic never left the bag. Don't recall a hole where being a forehand or lefty player would have been an advantage; ideal shots were dead straight or RBH anhyzer with a fade finish. Course appears to be missing one (or two) good hyzer "meat hook" hole. Clearing the area to the right of the #10 green and moving the #10 tee-pad to the right and near the Chicken Coop exit would be my answer.

Tough Hike - especially in the summer heat. Could have used a shaded bench or two, particularly after hole #6 to #7 uphill trek.

Other Thoughts:

All the fairways widths seemed... fair, but five feet off the fairway is absolutely brutal in most spots. Not a fault of the designer at all, but wear long socks if you plan on missing a fairway. Everyone in my group was bleeding at the end of this round.

Navigation is not really an issue, and a total non-issue after your first round. Still, the "next hole" signs (present on probably ever hole) were frustratingly small and hard to spot at times. The map provided at the clubhouse was very accurate and helped in the two tough transitions (#4 to #5 and #9 to #10).

The wooden deck style tee-pads on some holes are exceptional and obviously took a great deal of time and care. That being said, I felt nervous on the 14th tee-pad and detected a little give between base boards. I am 250+ lbs., but a couple of more 2x4s for support might be needed.

Flow of course was strange in that the two biggest uphill tee-shots were #16 (another really good hole) and #18. The only other uphill hole (#9) is much more restrained. Felt weird to end round this way.

Overall, this was a great experience and I cannot wait to play the course again in the cooler months of the year. Definitely a future threat to Flyboy and the IDGC courses for Georgia's number one course.

Wide use of terrain and diversity of holes both on distance and openness. Well laid out with plenty of sign-age. Overall, I was really impressed with the course and it is worth a drive to play.

Cons:

Underbrush is creeping back and it was HOT!

Other Thoughts:

This will be on my regular rotation in the fall, Winter, and Spring. (Summer is to hot). the layout rewards good play and punish errant throws.

Gem of a course that gets better daily! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

**Keep in mind this course is 7 weeks old today (5/27/2011) and this review is being written AFTER several items in other reviewers posts were addressed in the ongoing course refinement on MAY 15th during the spring growth cleaning of the course where ALL fairways were trimmed of overhanging limbs and foliage and areas around the tees and greens were widened and cleaned.**
Pros:
Dual mostly concrete tees on 16 of the 18 holes [only downhill holes 8 (215 ft) and 14 (318 ft) have 1 tee].
New 11"X17" full graphic tee signs with shorter tee distances next to short tees on Hole map as well as next tee markers were installed on May 14th 2011 for all 18 holes.
Soda/Gatorade/Water vending machine at the halfway point of the Course inside the Chicken Shack (200 ft from Hole 10 Tee)
In keeping with the natural surroundings and Zip line theme, LARGE Burlap trash bags are located in several places on the course attached to the trees with carabineers.
The Command Center now has discs available for sale including custom Zipline logoed discs to have as a nice keepsake momento of your visit.
There are monthly ($20) and Annual ($60) passes available to help save on the $5 daily greens fees if you are planning to play regularly. Random Draw best shot Doubles is being held every 3rd Sunday all year round meeting at the command center deck.
New benches are being installed on several holes before middle of June.

Cons:

Cons:
Only restroom is at Command center near Hole 1
**Keeping in mind the newness of the course**
Holes 1, 2, 4 and 14 need mulch to help with potential mud issues if wet.
Not a problem for everyone, but poison Ivy is around on a few holes off the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

Signature holes:
Hole 6 (a par 5 from both tees) with newly planted trees lining the right side of the fairway to go with the thick woods on the left side of the entire fairway, which also climbs up 2 levels of elevation changes after the turn make shot placement a priority to have the chance at a birdie 4.
Hole 10 Has a view of the mountains in North Carolina from the pro tee.
Hole 12 - The Chicken Shack - enough said!
Hole 13 Has a view from the pro tee of the Georgia mountains.
Hole 15 A picturesque Par 4 hole that crosses the creek with a hillside basket placement
Hole 17 A winding fairway with a generous landing zone from both tees which allows golfers who execute the proper drive and upshot to have a chance at the birdie 3.
Other Thoughts:
No matter the score you are shooting, the screams of excitement from the people on the Zip line tours will keep up your spirits.
Mulch has been added to Holes 16 & 17 and will be added to the other 4 holes (1,2,7, 14) as it is delivered by the Power company.
Rustic, primitive Camping sites and large Teepees with electricity onsite will be available to rent by the end of June, along with a community bathhouse for those out of town visitors looking to make a weekend out of the visit.
