Pros:

Durand Creekside DGC at Nick Saelens Memorial Park is a 20 hole course that plays mostly park style with a creek that comes into play in a few places as well as a pond on the latter section. There's numerous other park activities that the front half of the course plays around but it's mostly all DG by the second half.

The baskets are MVP black hole portals on all holes. The course can be played as a traditional 18 holes. These holes feature the blue baskets. There's an additional option for a 20 hole layout. If playing this there's a 5A and 5B which have white black hole portals. These were all in solid shape. A little faded as far as the color but otherwise fine. These catch pretty well and stick out nicely. The baskets all had little american flags attached to the top which was a cool touch you don't see too often. Helped a bit with wind reads and just looked good. One basket and two positions per hole.

The tee pads are all concrete here. Pretty sizeable ones at that. There's a few places where there's a painted area on a walking path which serves as the tee. So I guess a few are asphalt too. These all were in great shape and worked great, even the asphalt pads. One tee pad per hole for the most part. There are a few places that had a long and short tee. Holes 12, 13 and 17 are the ones I can recall offhand.

The course flow is generally pretty easy to follow for the most part. Every next tee pad is visible from the previous basket except for holes 17 and 18. You walk right past hole 17's two tees while playing hole 11. Hole 18 is the only questionable one to locate potentially. Map isn't needed but could be helpful in a couple spots.

The course starts out longer and more open. There's trees in play on most of the holes and lots of OB areas (tennis court, sidewalks, yards, etc). The back half, starting with hole 11 is where it gets more interesting, albeit shorter. The creek and pond come into play in many spots on this section. Hole 17 has a carry over a prairie grass area but it should be easy enough to carry by most players.

The tee signs have been updated since the pictures on here were uploaded. They're really nice now. They have a pretty simple hole map with a next tee arrow, pars and distances to each pin, hole # and any OB in play. These are pretty slick looking signs.

Cons:

The front half of the course is littered with potential safety issues. Too many to list even. There's all the OB situations I mentioned above. If you play smart it shouldn't be an issue. The problem is this section is pretty wide open and if the wind is up all bets are off, no matter how well intentioned you might be.

On top of that the front half is just boring. I wondered what I got myself into after about 5 holes. Just bland golf that feels crammed into where it shouldn't really be.

Hole 10's tee pad is no more. It looks like they built a maintanence shed and paved in front of it where 10's tee used to be. Not a big deal since it's a wide open hole. Just don't wander aimlessly looking for it.

A number of filler type holes here. Holes 7,8,9 and 10 are just there to get you to the other side of the park. They're just less exciting versions of hole 1. That's a quarter of the course that are all basically the same hole.

Other Thoughts:

This is kind of the tale of two halves. I was not a fan of the front half (12 holes really). But by hole 11 it picked up some steam. It's not a destination course or anything you should go out of your way to play. It is better than LOTS of other options nearby though.

I feel like this is just under a 3 rated course in my eyes. 2.75 would be perfect. I'll bump it up due to the solid equipment. It's a "good" course. You can thank the creek and pond for that though (I kid, kinda). Judging by the pics that are on here now, tons of work goes into this course by the locals. In just a few short years even. Worth a stop if you're nearby.

Durand Creekside DGC

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 13, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Nice park that is maintained and the DG course is in it's own little area which is great. There is a walking trail that goes around part of the park but I didn't see too many people there in general when I played on a Sunday afternoon.

- The course now has nice, grippy cement teepads and looks like new signage which was very well done.

- Dual pins with short pins and long pins. I don't think both were in at the time I played and I believe the longs were in but wasn't paying enough attention.

- Layout is decent and flows nicely. I don't think I got lost a single time except after hole 6.

- Course has a good amount of water hazards including a creek in the front 9 and a pond in the back 9. Hole 12 you are throwing with the pond on your left and the creek on your right which the latter is hard to tell unless you walk up the fairway a bit. Hole 13 and 14 you are throwing over the pond which was extremely fun.

- Giant parking lot which would benefit tourneys being held here. Speaking of which, I would absolutely love to play one on this course.. and that's coming from someone who hates open park style courses like this.

- It seems like DG is not a huge thing up in this area as every single course I went to in this part of IL had nobody playing except myself. I'm sure they are a lot busier during the summer but still nice to not have to wait behind large groups of people.

- Disc return box located by teepad one. I like when DG courses have a safe place to return a found disc.

Cons:

- Not a whole lot of distance for such an open park style course. I believe 16 and 17 were the only chances you got to rip a disc more than 350 feet which to some might be a negative.

- Due to it being in the flat open part of Illinois, it is very possible for it to be extremely windy on certain days which isn't always fun when there's a lot of water hazards. The creek/river was moving pretty fast and I don't think a disc would be retrievable. The pond looked pretty nasty too but perhaps a disc would take a little longer to float to the bottom.

- Like others have said, it is a multi-use park so on really nice, warm days out I'm sure it could get extremely busy and you would have to skip a few holes if that was the case.

- I wasn't a fan of the layout for holes 7-10 where you're essentially just crisscrossing until you get to the pond holes 12-16.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this course seems to have come a long way since it's initial few reviews. It now has cement teepads and way better signage. I wouldn't rate this one higher than any of the Anna Pages but I definitely liked this one better than Woodlands or Ingersoll Memorial.

If you happen to be in the Rockford area or in Beloit, I suggest coming and playing a round or two here. Seems like a good all-year round course and it's free which is always a great thing.

Fun & challenging! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

First of all, I agree with everything the previous reviewer wrote.

The park in general was clean and maintained. Grass is mowed and there is plenty to do for families who aren't interested in disc golf. It's clear that the community cares about this area.

With the exception of holes 1,2 and 7-9, each hole offered a unique challenge. There is a creek that comes into play for a couple holes and players have to clear a pond on two of the later holes. The pond throws are only about 200 feet, so it should be manageable for intermediate+ players. They're memorable holes.

The equipment is under construction. The current tees are dirt and the tee signs have minimal information, only hole # and distance. It does appear to me that there will soon be concrete tees and tee signs that are a little more elaborate.

It's a super fun round, especially given it's in a public park. The water that comes into play makes it much more challenging than your average park disc golf course.

I felt the course flowed pretty well and there was a never a question of where the next tee would be. There is a big course sign at the beginning that you can review, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Cons:

- The vast majority of holes play within striking distance of the path that snakes through the park. I think that, with few exceptions, every hole has the potential to cross the path.

- Holes 1,2, and 7-10 are pretty boring. They're flat without obstacles for 300ish feet. Given how great some of the other holes are, these felt out of place, especially since there are four in a row that just play back and forth across an open field.

- Due to the water hazards (creek early on and then the pond in the 2nd half) and the thick rough in certain areas in the back 9, there's a risk of losing a disc, which is never fun.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, my trip from Madison to check/update/bag this course was a success. My brother and I had a great time and would recommend checking it out if you are so inclined. Pictures are uploaded for you to check out.

I would advise coming during non-peak hours though, since foot traffic can make your round a little longer as you wait for people to walk on by.

Fun Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This was a fun park style course with some very interesting challenges. The mando shot along the tennis courts is a nice early challenge in the round, the holes that play around the pond in the back are a fun challenge, and having water in play near some of the holes adds some level of difficulty.

Cons:

Some of the holes before the pond holes feel repetitive, but it's an open park with few trees, so there isn't much that could be done to help that.

It is a multi-use park, so I could see the course being difficult to play if there are a lot of people around. Also, the course plays around ball fields, so if there is activity on those fields, some of the holes should absolutely be avoided. I would recommend checking out the town's Facebook group before going to play.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun park course. The 3.5 rating is only because, while it is playable, it's not complete yet. Teepads still need to be poured along with tee signs need to be put up. The group seems to be working diligently to get these finishing touches going. Once those things are done, this course definitely moves up to at least a 4 star review!
