All courses are not created equal 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Beautiful Scenery
-Elevation Changes
-Water Hazards
-Dense wooded areas
-Boulder fields
-Mach 3 Baskets
-Challenging Course Design
-Pro Par's for all holes

Cons:

-Difficulty locating the first tee
-Innova Baskets on 7 and 9?
-No Tee signs (not to be confused with hole markers)

Other Thoughts:

Holes 1-5 play through a mostly wooded area, with fairly open fairways. They play perfectly in my opinion, giving the player a chance to ease his/her way in to the course.

Holes 6-9 open up to the marina area. Lots of ups and downs, where strong wind usually comes in to play. Very challenging! Chances are you will pick up some bogies on these holes. Remember to bring your Predator or Firebird!

Holes 10 and 11 are the most technical the course has to offer. Very tight fairways often leading to scattered trees with no intentional path to the basket. My suggestion? Pray!

Holes 12-14 play up from and then back down to a small stream. Moderate challenge here, with clear paths to the baskets. Hole 14 is my personal favorite, but I won't spoil it for people here.

Holes 15-16 play up to and around a man made damn. 16 is particularly epic, throwing down along the dam embankment to the stream leading under the dam. The basket is positioned smack in the middle of the stream! Very fun!

Holes 17 and 18, the final stretch. These holes will make or break par for the day. This is the time for straight conservative throwing. Footing can also be quite hazardous on these holes, so watch your step.!

Overall, this course is phenomenal whether you be a seasoned player, or an intermediate with a desire to get better at the game! Remember its all about fun, not the score at the end, so don't get discouraged and enjoy yourself!

PS- stop at oWowCow creamery just 2 miles from the park entrance. The best Ice Cream I've ever had!

Amazing Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 18, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nockamixon was designed by disc golfers for disc golfers and this is the absolute truth. I'm going to use the word variety a lot in my review because this was the predominant attribute of the course.

Although the course is mostly wooded, the holes ranged from fairways dotted or bordered by trees to straight up PA back country. Some of the wooded holes could accommodate a max distance driver while others required a more controllable disc, finesse, and skill. The more open holes included flat clearings to wide open holes where a long bomb drive could easily be accommodated. Hole 5, the 803' par 5 is an amazing hole that provides the opportunity for controlled drives, but the trees situated throughout the fairway are an ever-present danger that makes for interesting play.

Elevation changes come into play practically every other hole creating tricky approaches or letting the disc rip over long downhill fairways.

Water comes into play frequently on this course. Kudos should be given to the course designers for the clever way in which they worked this hazard into the different holes. For the most part, the water provided a great scenic backdrop, but you always know is there, lurking, waiting to grab a disc after an unintentional roll or bad bounce.

The variation in scenery is awesome. Backwoods paths, boulder fields, ponds, trickling brooks, gushing streams, wide-open vistas, to...I could go on for a while.

I really liked the basket placement at Nockamixon. Different aspects of the terrain were used to create unique putting situations. A few standouts included a tall basket atop a rock pile and a chain-mounted basket hung from a tree.

For the most part, the tee pads were clean and in great shape. The tee signs were also in pretty good shape, large, and clearly visible.

Cons:

As most homeowners know, water is a necessity in life and your house's biggest enemy. Same goes for Nocky. The streams running through the course are beautiful, but the course is a bit boggy. This is likely a bigger problem in the spring and summer and after any rain storm or a big melt.

When the foliage is when it's in full bloom it is a big nightmare and disc stealer in the summer.

I was lucky enough to have a pair of local players walk me through my first time (and played a fun round), but without a map or other local disc golfers, course navigation might be a slight problem for first-timers.

Other Thoughts:

It's a tough course (dare I say a monster?), but a couse I'm gald I played and will play again. Newer players might find Nockamixon difficult, hell, experienced players find Nockamixon difficult, but there is so much variety that you'd be hard-pressed not to have a good time.

For any noob that is intimidated by or has been chewed up and spit out by courses like Tyler State Park could test their chops and regain some confidence at Nockamixon. I highly recommend this course.

nottobemissedin 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Major challenge. It was made even harder by a drenching rain, complete with slick pads, slick chains, and the obligatory slippery rocks in and around the fairways. Trees, trees, and more trees, lots of water, left, right, slopes. Everything I was hoping for. great views of the lake, state park setting is awesome.

Hole 14 is one of the better holes out there with an attainable 300 foot downhill basket, but the stream makes it a sick shot. Today is was more like a raging torrent. If my disc went in, it was gone. I'd love to play this course again on a dryer day, but the inclement weather made it fun in its own way.

Cons:

None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts:

thanks to optidiscic for showing me the local routes on such a nasty day!

Do not ''Nock'' it tell you try it 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 28, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Water, water , and rapids galore, after this course you will be wanting more! This course is anything but average. It has great risk reward opportunities, no hole is like the next, great baskets. Long great course worth the trip. Holes 3, 12, 11, 8, 9, 7, 4. Just a great course. Pretty scenery, like the rapids next to basket 7. This is by far the second best course i have ever played. It is worth any drive to visit a cource with such great things coming at you on every single hole you play (except the new 1 2 3 4). I recomend any one come to this course!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cons:

No tee signs. A real bummer for people with bad knees.

Other Thoughts:

This course is up there with Tyler, yet it is no comparison. If you want to have a more relaxing game, skip hole 1-4, they are no fun, 14 on this course is like 27 on another.

Tough, but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 13, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

challenging placement of baskets, good use of natural features such as water hazards, rocky terrain, & hillsides.

Cons:

Thick patches of overgrowth as well as some deep water make losing discs easy. Tees have no map depicting hole location, must rely on map on back of scorecard. Holes are fixed, not mobile like other local parks.

Other Thoughts:

All in all a good afternoon course. There are serious challenges such as steep elevation shifts, narrow fairways, & water hazards galore. As a novice I found the course challenging at points, forgiving at others. Definitely worth a trip.

Believe the hype 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 25, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

A great use of elevation changes to make holes more difficult and take advantage of the surrounding views of this beautiful park. There are several holes where water comes into play, that make an already difficult hole that much more challenging.

There are maps available, tee signs on all holes, and each basket has a bright red flag on top of it so it is easier to be seen from a distance. This is a good thing, because the baskets are a long long way away.

No two holes play the same, look the same or challenge you the same. You won't get bored, even with four less holes than traditionally normal. This course will test your short, long finesse and power games. Be prepared to throw all your shots and bring all your discs.

There is plenty of parking available and there is a bathroom on site.

Cons:

Very few cons to this course. Obviously only 14 holes, so hopefully a reconfigure of the course or added land can create 4 more holes. On the back holes, 6 - 14, the terrain is very rugged. It would be very difficult to use a cart, and 13 and 14 were kind of swampy. On 13 and 14, you need to step on the rocks to keep your shoes dry. Therefore, you need some agility, so less nimble folks may have difficultly on this part of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Believe the hype on this course. It had to be one of the, if not the hardest courses, I've ever played on. Playing it blind, with only the map, doesn't give you the true sense on how long and difficult some of these holes are. There are several holes that are long. Hole #6 is appropriately named, because you'll probably score a 6 on it, and be thankful that you did, this hole is extremely long.

There are some unique features on this course. A hanging basket on #4, a beautiful waterfall on #7. Breath taking views from basket #2 and tee #3 of the nearby marina and lake.

You won't be disappointed with these 14 holes and you'll be wishing for 4 more so you can truly know what a butt whopping is like.

My Favorite Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is extremely challenging, but is a great place to learn some new skills. There is every type of hole possible..water, uphill, downhill, open grass, thick woods, etc. Bring your hiking shoes, because it's long.

Cons:

It's very easy to lose discs here! It would be perfect if there was 18 holes as well.It can be hard to find your way around at certain points.

Other Thoughts:

It is a very wet course, so be prepared...
overall, a must play for the patient and experienced

A Course with Character 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 11, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This review has been updated to include the "missing" four holes. These holes are now #1-#4. They flow right into the old #1, which is now, #5. #1 tee is near the bathrooms at the bottom of the parking lot.

This course has a ton of variety. There is a lot to see and throw here. There is nearly everything you could want in a disc golf course: tight, wooded holes, big drives off the top of hills, elevated baskets, hanging baskets, holes that require discipline and planning, spectacular greens, water, risk - this is a complete course.

There were numerous memorable holes: #4's elevated basket, #6's very fast green (tough approach for a lefty like me), #7's hilltop tee, #11's green with water flowing in the backdrop, #13's canopied drive, #14's decision making risk vs reward tee shot, to #16's tiny green you have to drop your disc onto. This is a very memorable course.

There are lots of rocks, and thus, lots of rock walls - which always look cool to me. As I mentioned earlier, water comes into play on many of the holes.

For the most part it was easy to find your way around the course. There are signs for next tee and such. A map will be helpful for a first-timer, though (once they are made to include the new holes).

This course is a challenge and will beat up your discs as well as your legs. I especially enjoyed the little touches - the prime example being hole #8. There were fences and posts that look like they have been there for decades, which in this case is a good thing. It reminded me of a place where you would tie your horse up to relax under a tree. A wonderful view of the lake, plus a hanging basket there (popped my hanging basket cherry!). All of this is on one hole.

This course has it all and is wonderful fun to play.

Cons:

A vast majority of the cons are alleviated after your first visit to Nockamixon. The biggest con is the navigation of individual holes and not knowing where you are throwing to, how far the basket is from the tee, or how the fairway is shaped. Very few baskets can you see from the tee. All this being the case, this course is not first-time friendly. Tee signs are simply just numbers: "Tee 3" for example. Getting from hole to hole is pretty easy, as there are next tee signs and well worn paths, but you have no clue how a hole plays until you've played it.

There is a strange cluster of baskets and tee pads where the course kind of loops over itself. It doesn't mess things up really, but walking from #11's basket and seeing #15 tee was confusing for a bit.

There is a tad bit of repetition in some of the holes: #3, #10, and #18 are all very similar: heavily wooded doglegs.

The ground is pretty rocky in the woods, so be aware of that. The rocks help you avoid the mud that the other reviews have mentioned. #17 had an asphalt road running down the middle of it. I thought that was odd.

This course isn't going to be fun for new people to the sport. It is quite challenging and can be almost frustrating if you aren't lined up on the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

This is one of my favorite courses to play. It is disc golf exactly how I like disc golf. It is challenging, beautiful, and above all else, fun. The "new" holes #1-4 add even more to what was already a great course. This course is probably my highest rated course, but it rounds down to a 4.5 and not quite up to the 5.0. Signs, navigation for first timers, and a smidge (a very small smidge, though!) of repetition keep it from being a 5 in my book.
