Not A 'Nix' On Nockamixon! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ All holes are within the woods. The population density, tree thickness, ceilings and arrangement vary from hole to hole. It never feels like the same hole twice.
+ Decent rubber tee pads.
+ This course is clearly geared more towards experienced players, but the pars still feel fair.
+ Water hazards on about half of the course add some risky drama to the fun.
+ This place has some pleasant scenery. There are streams and creeks everywhere with a few tiny waterfalls. There is a nice quiet pond. There are many different types of trees. There are dozens of rocks everywhere you go that a player can hop on if you want to play 'the floor is lava.' Walking through the forest is less boring when there are fun things to look at along the way.
+ The course feels as though it has sprouted up from the ground itself in how it coexists with the natural setting.
+ There are quite a few elevation challenges here. Some are stark and steep. Others are slight and steady. It also makes for an invigorating hike. Wear sturdy footwear here.
+ Benches at nearly every hole allow golfers to relax and enjoy the view if they have to wait for others to finish.
+ Holes 9 and 18 both bring you back to the parking lot with bathrooms and trash cans in case you want to get something from your car partway through.

Cons:

- It's muddy in several spots. Wear footwear that you won't mind getting messy because some holes seem permanently saturated. Hole 9 is affected most by this. The path leading to it, the tee pad and even the first dozen yards of the fairway are all mired.
- All 'current tee' signs should be replaced. As of early Oct 2018, they are faded hand-drawn diagrams with just the pars and distances. Some have loose illustrations of the hole ahead, but they are not sufficient. For such a great course, this is an odd thing to take a hit on.
- There are also very few 'next tee' signs. A course this large needs signage directing players to the next hole. It looks more professional and keeps the navigational guesswork to a minimum. Otherwise, players could go the wrong way or feel frustrated and more likely to stop playing. The walk between 8 and 9 is the biggest offender of this.
- No trash cans along the way. Please do not litter!

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole at this course might be hole 15 mostly because of that view. You can see the marina in front of a huge lake at the bottom of some forested foothills. It's especially nice to look at as the Sun is setting because the golden orange light catches the leaves and makes a sharp shadow that slowly creeps upward as the colors deepen and it sinks lower behind the horizon at your back. At no other point in the disc golf course is there quite a sight like it. (Maybe at the end of hole 4, now that I'm thinking about it.) Up until then, the player is surrounded by trees in all directions, and it gets a bit tiresome. 15 is a visual treat. Plus, that putting area has a risky downhill slant. One bad throw, and your putter will roll away. My least favorite hole here is the one just before it. To my mind, 14 is a nightmare to play. High grasses + tree pinball = bad time.

As for the course itself, Nockamixon is one of the very best, hands down. It has earned all of the praise it gets from every review before and after this one.
The terrain is adventurous and tricky. While playing here, golfers will cross streams two or three times using only stepping stones and every other time on footbridges. There are many fallen tree trunks all over the course that you can walk on if you want to feel like Indiana Jones. Plus, the landscape is just lovely. There are steep climbs that players will have to endure in order to progress, and they are not without danger. Slips and trips are a real factor here. Just watch where you're going, don't rush, and you'll be fine. And do your best to avoid to mud. Thankfully, there are rocks all over the place that you can leap on like a disc golfing ninja.

The holes are varied and fun. One minute you're throwing through a narrow corridor of trees, the next you're throwing downhill right alongside a rocky stream far below, and the next you're throwing uphill over a small ravine with a running stream at the bottom. Nockamixon is a dynamic and lively course with a ton of variety. Of course, players who haven't been here before might feel a bit confused with the lack of next tee signs and unclear current tee signs, but I'm sure that this will be fixed soon enough.

In closing, Nockamixon DGC is a wonder of the disc golf world. What few flaws there are can be easily overlooked because of the park's beauty and the course's creative, crazy and slightly dangerous layout! If you have not played it yet, you seriously owe it to yourself to come here and experience what Nockamixon has to offer. Be warned that it will not take pity on you. You will have to fight through the trees, hills and distances for those pars, but I know that disc golfers love a good challenge.
And that's why I really do think that you'll love Nockamixon.

Champion caliber hike! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 14, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Championship caliber course with 18 beautiful holes
-Hole length varies so it's not always a huge distance, which makes it even more fun and gives you a break!
-Course is very well maintained and a nice workout trekking across a very large area
-not too hard to find the next tee really except for 8-9, if you've never played it
-uses the landscape to create an excellent assortment of shots

Cons:

-Very hard to play if you're new so don't expect to get par or close to it, even if you've played for a while it is still very challenging.
-terrain could be dangerous is slick conditions
-signage needs to be updated and can't hardly be seen some holes

Other Thoughts:

Really an excellent course that uses the landscape beautifully to make a champion caliber course, which pros have played on before! Not many things it lacks and it's very fun to play if you have time!

Home of 2005 Worlds and a must play. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 5, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Creative and Challenging
Multiple Tee/Pin options
Elevation change, Sweeping fairways, tunnel shots, if you can think of a shot I assure you will find it on this course.
Naturally Scenic beauty on every hole.
Great parking.
Good Facilities (large bathroom hut at course start).
Well maintained (all by locals, thank them when you are out there!).

Cons:

Due to its high difficulty it is not quite as accessible to all players, a shorter Tee position might help with this but ultimately doesn't impact my rating.
Extremely rocky fairways lend to slippery surfaces in the rain making this course not only difficult but slightly dangerous if you aren't actively engaged.
Easy to lose plastic, these fairways get tight and if you kick off.... my heart goes out to ya.
Signage is there but in need of a good update as most of it appears to be sharpied onto a white board (although it does add a really neat aesthetic to it).

Other Thoughts:

There is one reason you are going to play Nocki: you want to be challenged in a way no other course in the area comes close to. This course is long, wooded, and immensely challenging. For those reasons it was featured in the 2005 PDGA Worlds along with Little Lehigh Parkway and Jordan Creek, So when you walk these grounds you are walking the same path as Greats like Climo, Doss, Shultz, Dunipace, and many others which adds a harrowing/humbling effect to it more so than playing Parkway or Jordan because you know this is where the tournament was truly fought and won. The course snakes and weaves its way through the massive and beautiful Nocamixon State Park giving you a true nature walk feel and lends itself to an immense plethora of views ranging from wooded rocky glens to rolling grassy knolls overlooking the Marina. This course will take some time to play through especially the first time you play it so budget your time accordingly and this course will wear you down even if you are in good shape so bring snacks, water, and don't feel bad taking a break! It is hard to describe just how challenging this course truly is but to give a little perspective Hole 1 is a massive par 5.... and it plays pretty much all of 5 strokes unless your game is tip top. You will need to have all of the shots in your bag and your scramble game on point and that is just to shoot par if you play at an amateur level. This course is hard to criticize as it truly is a best of the best kind of course but to get that coveted 5 disc score it needs to have it all and to me the only thing on my trip that held this course back was its signage. The hole signage is very faded and appears to have been drawn over/on with Colored markers, well enough that you can figure out roughly what you need to do but could use some improvement and maybe a few markers out there pointing you in the right direction for the next tee as there are a few short walks from target to teebox that you might miss. In summary: the hype is real, Nocki is that true tournament level course. It will stun you with its looks, entertain you with its design, punish you for your bad shots, and break your will if you let it but it is a course that everyone needs to play once to say they have and is a course that proves just how difficult disc golf really can be.

Nocka-Magnificent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Planning a road trip along the East Coast of Pennsylvania is not easy. Definitely not easy. You have so many courses that are top of the line. However, there is only one Nockamixon. I played a tournament the day before, and I asked local players what course would be the absolute one to hit. Every answer was Nocki, and it wasn't a long pause, then decision. They went into autopilot, claiming that Nocki was the course to play.

The drive lone to the course was scenic enough. You are driving through the back country of PA. You should know what you are getting when you walk into a course in the city called Quakertown, but it is a really nice part of the country.

The first hole sets up what you know is going to be an epic course. You are throwing down into the woods, which at 8 o'clock in the morning, has the sun rising up over the trees, illuminating the dewy grass and the millions of rocks that are scattered through the woods. It is truly an enlightening experience, almost religious.

The holes themselves were brutally amazing. You are curving, twisting, winding through the woods of the beautiful park. These holes were just brutal. Up and over ravines, down and through tunnels, hyzer bombs through trees, anhyzers over bushes. Just wonderful shots, designed with a seasoned player in mind.

The scenic shots were easily some of my favorite. You would throw shots that would just glide over boulders, and this is not something you can dream about. You can't watch a video and think, "Close Enough." You have to do it. You have to hit tight gaps that open up to a cliff like drop off. Same exact idea. Shots over ravines, shots over creek beds. It was insanely different, and difficult. Something you only see at courses like this.

This course was not just a fantastic disc golf course, but it is also one of my favorite hikes that I have ever taken. Just the beautiful rock structures, and well aged trees are jaw dropping, and that was just the sights. I was also climbing over boulders, jumping off mini-cliffs, and just huffing and puffing up and down hills. It was just insane.

Cons:

There were only a few cons, and I know that this course is just fine without the extra stuff, but there could be more things that would easily bump this up to a 5.

The tee signs were old, cracked, and not the most descriptive. They were hand drawn, and it was sometimes faded, or unreadable. This caused a bit of a problem, because a lot of the holes, the basket was out of sight. These could easily be updated with newer, better signs.

I can tolerate Mach IIIs, but at a course that is one of the best, they should have the best. An update is definitely in need if they want to keep up with the many improvements that other courses are making.

The rubber tee pads were showing their age, as they were not super long, or particularly grippy. I wasn't slipping, but when you have to throw 350 foot tight lines, you want a better tee to throw off of.

You could add a tee, but what they have right now is a great disc golf course. No real reason to add, but it is not a beginner course. Bring your A-game.

Navigation was pretty tough on a couple holes. The paths were well beat, but there were a few holes with multiple paths. I don't understand why there were not any signs pointing to a next tee. This goes a long way. I feel even a painted tree, or a wooden arrow on leaned up against a rock. I felt there was a cheap solution to a pretty big problem.

Some holes had tall fairway grass, or really bad gnats. Put on bug spray, because there are definitely some bugs you do not want living in the hairs of your body.

Note- Sometimes, I feel these extra perks are not needed. This usually only applies on private courses, because they do not have the daily visitors, or the humongous club. I feel that a state park should have better amenities than some other courses. Amenities are not nearly as important as the golf, which Nocki had amazing golf.

Other Thoughts:

This course is one of the reasons that disc golf is the best sport in the world. When else can you go through some of the best looking properties on the United States, sometimes not even touched by a saw, or an excavator. Just raw, natural beauty.

Nocki is that course that you go home and say, you know, that course was awesome. You tell you buddies about it over a couple of drinks, or just dream about the day you get to go back.

I feel like with more time and club work, this course moves forward and becomes a 5 star. I will know too, because I am definitely coming back.

Big course with scenic views. Tests all of your disc golf abilities. Both 9 hole loops bring you back close to parking lot. Love a course where par is a good score and this is one of the few

Cons:

A bit rocky and in peak vegetation it can be rough in spots. It's a big course and is a lot of work to keep whole course perfectly manicured.

Great course, but "Caveat Newbie" 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Beautiful course. It would be nice just as a hike in the woods.
- Diverse holes with changes in fairway width, elevation, water hazards, and doglegs.
- Well maintained. The fairways were obvious.
- Intuitive layout. On some holes there were no signs to the next tee but just followed the paths and the next hole location was obvious. The only one that tricked me was the transition from hole 4 to 5 (old numbers 13 to 14).

Cons:

- Not "cons" really but warnings for new players.
- Many reviewers stated this course is intended for more experienced players. THEY ARE NOT KIDDING! I have only been playing since last summer so I am a newbie, and I found this a very difficult course to play. I lost two discs. I only parred one hole. I hit almost as many trees as baskets. I landed in OB water twice. If you are easily frustrated, this course is not for you (yet).

Other Thoughts:

- Wear supportive shoes! The fairways are very rocky at times. This course is a hike through the woods, not a walk in a field.
- Bring a bottle of water. If you can't carry one with you have one in your car that you can drink after hole 9 before hitting the back nine.
- Bring some extra discs, if you have them. I lost two and if I hadn't brought extras I would have finished the course with just my putter.
- This is a great course. I am glad I played it even though my game was poor. I am sure I will enjoy it even more as my skill level increases.

Long Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A beautiful course that truly utilizes the landscape and topography of upper Bucks County. Every hole is unique in design. Very challenging, very long. Easy to navigate. A super course.

Cons:

Some of the "Pros" need to be restated: Very challenging, very long. It will take a while to play this course. Double the time it takes to play an average par 54 course. The rough is ROUGH. Don't expect to see basket until after your first (and sometimes second) shot on some holes. Signage is OK but faded and should be re-done or replaced.

Other Thoughts:

Drive accuracy is rewarded here. Love this course but need to plan the time to play. Some very rocky fairways.
Since the course is two 9-hole loops, they can and have reversed the map layout. 1 is now 10 and 10 is now 1. The hole that overlooks the lake and marina 6 is now 15. Hope this helps.

Hardcore disc golf! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

WOW! This course was fantastic!

You looking for challenge? Nocky has it.

How 'bout natural beauty? You found it.

This monster demands respect yet treats its guests with fair play and beautiful, rugged terrain.

The reputation of Nockamixon's long, narrow fairways had me skeptical upon arrival. There is not much that irks me more on a course than ridiculously convoluted fairways. This course is fair. Whew. My biggest concern behind me.

Now the bonuses kept rolling in.

The diversity was through the roof. There was nice elevation, including a shot out toward the boat docks to a pin precariously perched on a relatively steep hillside. Hole 7 is a nice 400+ ft, par 3, sail shot and hole 14 offered a gorgeous right hook shot through some early trees, over the creek, down to a reachable pin. Hole 10 was a sick, hard left hook that continued hooking for about 800ft. I wont bore with a hole by hole breakdown but I can assure you, the diversity kicked ass.

The rough was exactly as it should be. It makes your next shot tougher but you should leave with your entire bag of discs.

The mental aspect of this course is not to be underestimated. You will be presented with options on some holes but typically you will need to choose, and more importantly HOLD, long lines to achieve par. Pick your landing zones well. Don't expect pitch and putts or ace runs here.

I felt navigation was a breeze. Really, it was about the only simple thing on this course. The handcrafted signage and next tee signs were spot on.

Cons:

The rocky ground can make footing a bitch. If you have weak ankles, wear shoes/boots with good ankle support. It's wise to take your time while choosing your paces in some spots.

This isn't really a con but this is not a course for everyone. Trust me, Nocky will beat down anyone lacking a solid, well rounded game.

Other Thoughts:

This course really left an impression. It has so much to offer. I very much look forward to a chance to get back to play this one.

This is one of the best courses I've ever played.

The course is long, and really well layed out. Lots of wooded holes, some nice water holes, and a few wide open holes keep things interesting. You need a perfect combination of power and precision to play well here.

It's a wooded monster with a lot of great views, and more variety than most.

Cons:

I think it could use a few more water hazards to make things even more interesting.

DG Heaven 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Wow...
-Extemely diverse: Each hole has a very unique personality...tight wood, open wood, tunnel shots, open field, major elevation changes, major demand for perfect execution amd accuracy...this is a course that will absolutely not bore you with repetition.
-Very difficult: The course without hesitation became my new benchmark when evaluating my level of playing. So long as you can direct your disc well and are willing to play smarter and not always go for a shot Chuck Norris would, you can survive here, though I recommend beginners to develop your game elsewhere. For intermediates, advanced, and open players...many throws/lines, every disc.
-Stunning vistas: hole 6 basket>lake view is breath taking and really steals the thunder from an otherwise beautiful look from tee #7 down a large hill with a tight fairway, lake on the right. The whole course is filled with grade A scenery..where to begin..see it for yourself, I can't do that for you.
-Good rubber tee pads and signs: most tee pads were in good shape and signs were effective in visually describing the hole (especially since on most holes, the basket is not viewable from tee pad). It was easy to find next tee as well.
-Narrow fairways that usually have one or two reasonable gaps.
-Wasn't busy on a fair weathered mid afternoon Saturday in early September.
-indoor bathrooms and a water fountain near tee pads #1/10
-very natural feel to the course: not too many times where there was much need for maintenance. Most fairways are mixture of rocks and grass, so there was only a few holes with a need to mow and maintain (they were maintained well).
-Almost everything I could ask for out of a DG course, except a low score ;)

Cons:

-Don't mess up: hard to recover here...score can take a beating if you tree out early due to big distance and high expectations of par here.
-Though super cool when visible enough to add to the landscape, many of the fairways are covered in small rocks that make walking tricky at times. Be careful not to twist an ankle.
-No scorecards available to my knowledge.
-No trash cans on course: littering was not bad, but a trash can halfway through front and back nine couldn't hurt.
I can barely criticize this course....demands a great performance but otherwise unbelievable all around.

Other Thoughts:

It's like this course tells a story. It's rare that a course has enough of a natural landscape and environment to provide the variety Nockamixon does. What a great experience.

The Measuring Stick 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 4, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Designed by disc golfers for disc golfers, this course has it all. Well defined fairways, excellent topography, and a large variety of hole layouts. I am relatively new to the sport, and this course is the measuring stick I use to define if I am actually improving as a player. If you think you've improved your accuracy and/or driving distance, this is the place where you will notice. The environment is beautiful, particularly on the back 9. Baskets are in good shape and clearly labeled. Tee pads are rubber, but in good shape overall. Even though it can get crowded, the layout makes you feel like you are all alone out there. The course was very clean overall. Love the new hand drawn tee signs, awesome addition to the course that addressed a major shortcoming. Each hole is very unique and memorable.

Cons:

Hard to come up with many, non concrete tee pads are the only reason I do not rate this course a 5 (I appreciate it would be impossible to get concrete to some of the tee areas).

Other Thoughts:

Playing here is definitely an experience. If you live anywhere is the area, you must play this course at some point. Prepare for a workout, and budget at least two hours to get through 18 holes. I like how the course wraps back around to the parking lot/restrooms after 9 holes so you can go back to your car if you need to for a snack or change of clothes. Bring extra shoes, it can be quite soggy.

Nockamixon definitely penalizes errant drives into the woods. Finding your disc is a challenge (the rocks and pond on hole 17 especially come to mind, as do the thickets on hole 7) and if you do find it, getting back out to the fairway is no picnic. Some holes are epically long and require perfect execution from rec players to even think about par. Due to the nature of many fairways (rocks), one cannot run up on 2nd and 3rd shots, which really tests your ability to throw for distance from a standing position. Not purely a grip it/rip it course, accuracy is essential as well. I would encourage new players to start somewhere else first, and then come here. Playing a first round here may be enough to discourage a new player from pursuing the sport further due to the difficulty Nockamixon presents.

Pros:

Fairly lengthy course, about 9000ft for 18 holes. Challenging to say the least. This course is definitely not for beginners or novices.I have been playing for a little while, but I took a friend who never really plays and he had fun but didn't even attempt to keep score. I like a challenge so I didn't mind.
- A very technical course, you have to hit the fairways or you will be in trouble. Puts course management skills at a premium.
- Great terrain, elevation changes, mostly fairly wooded, but a couple of open holes.
- Tees are rubber, they are decent, not the best, but better than gravel.
- The baskets are in good shape, love the hole with the basket hanging from a tree.

Cons:

- Can be difficult to navigate around, especially if you have never played there before.
- No fairway or basket maps at the tee pads- I had to just guess where the pins were on a couple of holes and just throw.
- The next hole can be hard to find at times, There are no signs pointing you in the right direction, and there were no course maps available when I went.

Other Thoughts:

This course could easily be rated higher. Most of the negatives of this course can be easily fixed.

This course demands that you be able to throw a myriad of shots. If you can throw hyzers, anhyzers, OH, rollers, and sidearm you will be at an advantage.

The terrain is very rocky, and I went when It was a little cold. The course was soaking wet and difficult to walk without stepping in a lot of mud and water. Bring proper footwear or you could be at a disadvantage, or at the very least just uncomfortable.

This course is a challenge. A prime example of the importance of accuracy over distance.

A Great Experience 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 11, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

World Class caliber course located in a beautiful state park. Long, primarily wooded technical course with a few open holes that play out over rolling hills. Each hole is numbered and has good sized rubber tee pads and sturdy working baskets. There are dual pin placements at each hole. Distinct pathways between holes make navigation easy. There is great use of elevation and water OB; streams and a pond come into play throughout. Numerous outstanding holes including #6 (downhill shot to a sloped basket with Marina in the background), #7 (long straight downhill shot), #8 (uphill shot to a hanging basket), #12 (uphill shot over a stream), #13 (downhill shot to basket on the other side of a creek), #16 (moat behind basket) and #17 (long shot to basket on the edge of a pond). Many amenities here including log benches and bathroom facilities. Permanent signs added in 2012. Good layout, good variety and an overall great playing experience.

Cons:

A few of the holes a bit TOO wooded with no real line to hit if your drive isn't perfect. There are a few safety issues here, most notably drives coming off hole 7 directly toward the hole 8 tee, and the parallel holes of 12 and 13 running in the opposite direction. An unbelievable number of huge rocks prevent run-ups at numerous holes. Areas of the course are marshy and wet. Bag poles at each hole would make a nice added extra. None of the cons detract from the overall experience here.

Other Thoughts:

With beautiful views and a great, challenging layout, Nockamixon is an outstanding course in nearly every aspect. This is most certainly not your casual round of disc golf but instead is a lengthy, grueling exercise which will test you at every turn. Pinpoint drives and a variety of shots are needed for success and there are no "gimme's" here. Beginners will struggle, but this course will make you a better player. A truly superb playing experience and one of the top courses on the east coast.

Let me first off start by saying this, 9,000+ft in just 18 holes!! Let that sizzle in your brain for a minute.
This course is hands down a professional grade challenge. Slip up on just one throw and your score is headed down the drain. "Nocky" as the locals call it, is the most unforgiving course when it comes to staying on the fairway. We are talking about tight fairways, thousands of trees, thick brush, and holes that sprawl out more than 800'ft. Let's just say you can only see a few baskets from the actual tee off. Nocky has par 3 to par 5 holes which are still an absolute challenge and struggle just to hit par. Every shot from the tee pad ending at the basket has to be money, EVERY SHOT! Kick off that fairway and your looking at a minimum bogey to double. The course uses the vast land it covers to its advantage including huge elevation changes, ledges, rocks, tree's, streams and creeks. This isn't your simple "Grip it n Rip it" course. On every throw your looking to position yourself for the next up shot. Course has beautiful concrete tee pads and baskets are in great shape. Also the majority of the baskets have large bright orange flags on them for easy spotting. Hole #7 basket is actually hanging from an enormous tree "over the hill and through the woods" lol.
The course is a state gameland and also offers many amenities on site. The park has a pond by hole #17 & 18. Nocky is also home to an extremely large marina and picnic sites. Restrooms by hole #1 & 10.
Again, I can't stress this enough. The course is made for the pro disc golfer in mind and is an unbelievable challenge that will stress out any amateur player! If you are new to disc golf, I would highly recommend steering clear of Nocky! If you think you can handle this massive challenge and shoot par, all I have to say is I DARE YOU! :)

Cons:

The only con I can honestly think of is the fact that the tee pads do not have a flight path sign showing tee to basket and the par/distance to pin. With that being said, this is still a top notch course by far!

Other Thoughts:

I play Nocky maybe once a month if I'm up to it. The course will simply beat you down and laugh at your discs. I enjoy the challenge and look forward to pushing myself to better my game. This course will better your game in just about every aspect, this is a mind blowing course that will force you to re-think your "normal" strategy. I HIGHLY recommend this course to any "pro" who hasn't played it and also recommend it to any Intermediate/Advanced Amateur looking to improve your game and take on a TRUE CHALLENGE! Like I always say, get out and play on fellow golfers!!!!

great challenege 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 19, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful park
Its easy to find your way even not being there as most of the pins are near the next tees.
Hard technical course that will require all of your shots.

Cons:

would be nice to have multiple tees, there is definitely room for them... this course would greatly benefit from a set of beginner esk tees.

Other Thoughts:

be careful with your driver on hole 7, we lost one.
lots of tough hiking moving through the course.

overall i would say if you are looking for a challenge come here... not a place for beginners.

Separating the Men from the Boys 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 26, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course plays about 9000ft in 18 holes, yet I only threw a fast driver twice. The course places an absolute premium on control and will punish you for mistakes. This course is not for beginners or novices. I will write this review assuming you are experienced enough to want a challenge:
* long course with technical fairways
* good use of hills, ledges, drop offs, and "open" areas
* several holes require good placement of drives (both accuracy and distance control) to setup your next shot - miss it and you'll struggle to get par
* several par 4's in the 450-600 ft range...and they are technical!
* Tees are rubber, but are still quite grippy in wet weather, a plus back here.
* baskets are in excellent condition, they look brand new
* big orange marker flags on the baskets
* big number signs for each tee
* rest rooms by 1st/10th tees
* alternate baskets added on several holes, a nice touch

Cons:

Very few. My only con was that there were no signs showing the fairway layout. New signs went in last year and they are very nice.

Other Thoughts:

The new signs are cool! Hand drawn and painted, they are accurate and add a nice touch of character. This course continues to impress and has become one of my favorites.

It is not for the faint of heart, as you must be disciplined to make well-placed drives or spend time getting out of trouble, often resulting in bogey. Once off the fairway, there are few "short cuts" and one must submit and throw back out.

The terrain is very rocky and the brush can get very heavy during the summer. I really enjoy Nocky in the fall and spring, when things aren't so thick. Be prepared with proper footware and get ready to hike! You'll be tired!

If you want a true challenge, and can realize the importance of accuracy over distance, which means teeing off alot with mids and fairway drivers, then this is your course. It is also about a 20-25 min drive from Tinicum, so the two could be played in one day.

5 star challenge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nocky is back to a full 18 holes now!

This course had the highest SSA rating during the 2005 Worlds proving it is a world class challenge. Plenty of par 4's and few par 5's.

The challenge presented here comes from length (mostly in the woods), the variety, the water in play, the large rocks and boulders
which populates the terrian, the elevation changes on every hole, the wind near the marina holes and the huge dogleg on hole 10.

The PA mountain like terrian with large boulders and elevation change over looking a marina on a few holes make it very scenic.

The waterfall and creek so very close to basket #16 are simply gorgeous.

The hanging basket on #7.

The view and choice to be made on hole #14.

When I played in late Sept 2010, I saw piles a crushed stone near several tees so I'm sure the rubber tee area will be improved very soon.

A few holes have multiple fairways, pick your poison especially on #2 and #14.

Orange flags on top of each basket making it easier to spot the basket since most holes are very long in the woods. The fairways in these woods are 'fair', hit the gap repeatedly and you'll score well which is easier said than done.

Park restrooms are located between holes 1 and 10. The park itself is very clean!

Cons:

While a 5 star challenge, I must knock a half star off for the bad footing on approach shots.

The rugged terrian sometimes makes it very tough to run up or get good footing while attempting each shot after teeing off. A stand still shot is required sometimes and this is very fustrating and annoys me too much.

The trees close to basket 9, I love the first shots on #9 but hate when the "green" has small trees near the basket.

The course can be muddy during certain times of the year.

Other Thoughts:

This course is not for beginners, this probably should listed as a Pro above.

The Lehigh Valley and/or Allentown area is a disc golf mecca with Blue Mtn, Jordan, Little
Lehigh nearby plus Tyler and Tinicum aren't far away either.

You can Feel the Love here. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Welcome to Central-North-Eastern Pennsylvania, you have just chosen to play one of our most challenging courses. Where your skill level will be tested and graded on your drives, ability to hold and shape lines and long distance putting accuracy. This location you have just entered was selected by disc golfers, designed by and built by disc golfers to not be your average neighborhood course. The thinking process here was to lull you with picturesque backdrops, elevation changes and scenic wooded paths for your cool walking pleasure. Then as we all know how disc golf can have it's cold and brutal darkside. You will instantly be smacked out of your lull to the humbling reality that you have come to be rated and challaneged.

You can easily find the first tee just to the left of the restrooms next to the parking lot (#13).Take a walk past the facilities toward the pond and look for the path on your left you will see the first tee, where it all starts. Make sure you have your seat in the upright position are firmly strapped in and we have your complete attention. Your guided tour is about to begin so please enjoy and keep in mind this was for your pleasure..........
Your first 3 holes start out in the 400 & 500 ft ranges with room for great drives and some tree love to show you some of the more shaded areas that we have to offer. Again, don't become discouraged with the feeble distances of your drives, we are about to enter the open area with rolling fields and scenic vistas. You will have the opportunity to watch your discs fly like the local hawks sailing on the thermals and wind pockets. Hole #6 is just a stunning shot for your disc as well as your camera. Looking out onto the panoramic view of the lake and boat docks. Here you will have a sense of triumph thinking you smell a birdie in the air and the making of one. You drive out and gently glide to a comfortable lye within 60 feet of the basket. Now the moment is at hand, will you risk going for the birdie and chance the death roll to the bottom of the slope where the basket is precariously located. Or think to play it safe? Knowing that this course offers few chances for a birdie opportunity or ace run. Choose well, remember this is a thinking game not just body mechanics. In a few steps from the basket you see the tee pad for hole #7. Another beauty of a shot! You look out and your mind struggles with your options on how to drive, for your second chance at birdie. As you survey the landscape you notice the basket is strategically tucked into a few low trees in a meadow far below to prevent a ace. This is where you will need to stand tall and be a man. Throw care to the wind and trust me on this one. Power drive out toward the lake hard and high allowing for a nice big hyzer fade left over the thorn jungle on the right to land near the basket.Think big and you will be rewarded for your effort with a near perfect lye next to the basket and a birdie. As we all know with every down hill soon to follow will come an up hill drive. Welcome to hole #8. Up the hill, across the meadow. than yet one more climb to finish at the hanging basket from a large tree. Yes, a novelty I know. But,... it adds to the fun factor for this course. Well, lets add a little distance to your next shot back down through the rolling hills.......and you will. Hole #9 finishes the front 9 with a 730 foot basket snuggled up near the treeline. You have now had your moment in the sun and the lush green fields working on your tan.

As you walk back to the restrooms to find the tee pad for hole #10. You take a breather,....adding up your score and thinking about the front nine sitting on the tee pad for #10. It's time for a change you decide, "I need to up my game." The back nine will do just that. So get ready to test your backwoods lore and hiking skills over rock fields, boulder strewn paths, foot bridges over flowing streams and gorges. Hole 10 can be a lumber jacking experience at 821 feet through the woods. I hope you planned your day well, bringing extra water and water proof light weight hiking shoes. Because you will need both depending on the time of year. This area can get muddy and stay damp. Cool, shady, rocky goat trails lead you through this area that play holes that look like old logging roads. Hole 12 is your only break at 252 ft. Soon comes one of my favorite holes of this course and what in my mind is how I always remember this place. Hole #16, a sweet 399 ft. straight down hill drive over water twice. I love this shot, it just begs you to empty your bag trying for a Cubby Ace. Resist the urge, because the last two holes are both over 550 feet. Well.......okay take two or three drives if you must, just make sure course traffic is light and your not holding anyone up. After all it is about having fun and you have to take it where you can here. No.17 is a long slow anhyzer fade right ending just short of the pond. Both sides of this fairway can eat your disc faster then a blink of your eye. To one side you have a marshy swamp and what looks to be a glowing stagnate pool. On the other side is a boulder field were the cranny goblins hide your errant thrown disc. Watch your footing please as you spend time looking for your disc. Moving right along. Don't worry all you have left is #18. The walk to 18 can be very swampy during Spring and heavy rains. Take a deep breath, you are almost done. Only this last hole at 567 feet around the pond through the woods over rocks, lumber jacking your way to the basket. In the fall your disc is subject to a game of hide and seek in deep leaves after ricocheting off several trees to confuse it's exact position. Oh, is't this just fun! Didn't you feel the love?

Congratulations, you have just finished your Nocky experience. How, do you feel? A little beat up? Tired? Go head and tally up that score sheet. Yeah I know, you aren't looking forward to it. The Good, the Bad and some really Ugly. As you look down at your score sheet after a hard played round and feel that tear welling up in your eye. Thinking to yourself that you should donate your discs and bag to the local boys club or maybe list them on Ebay? Take solace in knowing a score of +5 to +10 is a good day here. This wasn't meant to be your local pitch and putt. This was a test from the Disc Golf Gods themselves, to see if you are the man that you think your are? Or just a mere mortal and casual DG player? So hold your head high and walk with your shoulders back........you have been challenged.

Cons:

There are few and truly negligible in the greater scope of things here. Remember this was meant to be a test and challenge. So some of the down sides are;

* You came here unprepared for a challenge.
* You didn't bring your "A" game.
* You wore sneakers or your sandals broke.
* You can only power drive off of a concrete tee and a level elevated fly pad won't do.
* You need lot's of amenities and comforts to ease your game.
* You hate lot's of walking and rocky ground.
* Your feet got muddy or wet.
* Your ego is bruised and your not quite ready for the Pro tour.
* No multi basket locations.
* No multi pads to make Noobs feel at home.
* Signs yes, but by now you should be able to follow a path?..........No?
* Tee signs, are basic. Hole number and distance, what more do you need? You can see the basket? Your good.
* You don't like playing in the woods?.....to many trees?...........DUH!......test remember?........

Other Thoughts:

Okay! Ready for round TWO?

Nockamixon is a great park and a tough play. It can be like a love hate relationship. It's beauty takes you in and its technicality gives you a black eye. Pain or Pleasure? Which is it for you? One thing for sure is you can't just go for the ride once! You have to come back and play again. It will whisper your name in the night beckoning you to try again. If it doesn't than maybe this isn't the game for you?

Oh! As a side note 9 miles up the road is a sweet 9 holer that is too good to pass up. It will get your juices flowing............so if your in the neighborhood you might as well hit Unami Creek.
